I was looking for a new salon that wasn't pretentious or overpriced for an "almost what I asked for" outcome. To my surprise I found a hidden gem in Garfield, called the Whairhouse. I walked in off the street without an appointment and met the owner and lead stylist Jennifer. I have long curly, medium thickness hair, a few different shades of blonde and a few inches of grey roots. I explained what I wanted, Jennifer looked at my hair and said, sure no problem. I made an appointment for the very next day. My hair is not a quick color job, it's a long process every month. I've had many colorists try and rush the process to fit their schedule. For example most places like to apply the root color and then start the color and highlights on top of that while they process together. I have explained to many a colorist that my hair pulls lots of red and turns brassy if not watched closely while processing. In the past colorists have all said they know, it will be fine and then try to tone it in the end and I end up with different color roots than the rest of my and freshly colored and highlighted hair. The way the highlights are applied also makes a huge difference in my hair because my long curls lay on top of each other. Jennifer listened patiently to all of my concerns, did not complain about each step that she would need to do to achieve what I asked for. Nor did she try and tell me to do something else to shorten the process. She is extremely professional. She just did exactly what I asked for ( to my surprise of course, what are the odds of walking in off the street and finding a "hair whisperer" !! ) I've come to learn that she is known as "the Hair Whisperer" and she truly is!! I highly recommended her! I have been to many salons, NJ & NYC. Jen is one of the best. The salon is warm, comfortable and low key. Just like its owner. The assistants and make up artists are very helpful as well. They are also very entertaining and should charge extra for their comic relief! Jennifer Piña is a GOD with hair. I am a busy, professional (trial attorney) who does not have a lot of trust in stylists. I've had my fair share of "eh" color jobs, cuts and blow outs. Jennifer and her stylists are wonderful. I have had a series of prestigious business events and last minute TV appearances as a legal commentator, and my hair looks magazine/TV ready when I leave the salon. I have brown hair that always throws to a red tone when colored! Jennifer knows exactly how to match my root color and not make it pull towards that reddish hue. Her cuts are fantastic because she knows how to deal with the multiple textures found on my head. (Straight in front and frizzy and wavy in back!) I have been going to Jennifer for years now and she has never done an "eh" job. She did my entire bridal party as well as my up-do for my wedding. I came here on a Wednesday afternoon not knowing much about the place but I was willing to give it to try. My hair was a mess, it was dried out and had multiple colors in it from multiple dye jobs gone wrong. It just looked bad. I was met at the door by Jen who took care of me immediately. I trusted her to make the right decisions for my hair and it was the best move I could've made. By the time we were done my hair looked great. Jen was able to get it to one base color by stripping out all the other colors and she also added in some highlights. My hair was smooth and looked alive again with a conditioning treatment she also added. I received a bunch of compliments at work the next day and I recommend Jen to everyone. This was probably one of the best salon experiences I've had in a long while, I will definitely be going back! =) read more

I am not a regular at hair salons so I found these great reviews on yelp and took a chance and boy am I glad I did! Stopped by on valentine's day with no appointment and was taken right away! I had my hair washed before I came but was told I should wash it again because it was included so I listened and good thing I did. (I use Wen and it makes my hair a little too moistured) Anyway, Jen cut my hair and she did a great job. I didn't even know what I wanted but she talked me through it and I am so happy. My hair is still long but it looks revived. She also blow dried it and curled the tips. I left there very happy and feeling and looking great. Will definitely be back! I have been going to the wHAIRhouse Salon for over 4 years now, and my hair hasnt been better. I once decided to go to another salon closer to home, and that was the biggest mistake I could have ever done with my hair. I allowed for someone else to put on my bleach and all my hair broke off.. I have since never been to any other salon but the wHAIRhouse Salon, they are the only ones that I feel I can trust 100%. I have been to many salons over the years and this is by far the BEST. Jenni and her staff are very professional and a lot of fun to be around. I have been going there for several years and have NEVER had a problem making an appointment or being taken on time. They use the best products and my hair color lasts so much longer than when I got it done at another salon that was very expensive with a big name. When I first started coloring my hair it was because I wanted a change, but now it also covers the gray. Jenni is so detail oriented that I have NEVER gotten a bad cut or color. I have gotten different colors and cuts every time I have been in to see Jenni the owner and she kills it every time! Not once over the past two years has she said she didn't have time, couldn't do what I asked for or complain. True Professional, hard to come by. The salon is laid back and friendly. This review is months over due! I was in a hurry and needed a quick blow out for an event I had that night. The owner welcomed me in with open arms as a walk in on a SATURDAY. My blow out was done perfectly and in such great time. Every time I go to a hair salon all I hear is how curly or thick my hair is. The lady who did my hair had no problems what so ever. My hair is healthy employees are very knowledgeable i will recommend this place to my whole family . I was recommended to try this salon about a year ago. Since then, I will not trust anyone but Jen or one of the ladies at the Whairhouse with my hair. Whether it's for a haircut or dye, Jen will honestly preform a miracle. She will give her professional opinion on what one wants, and then deliver 110%. Best Hair Salon in the tristate area hands down. You will come out every-time with amazing hair. And they actually care about their customers hair.
