Oof. I am relatively new to Topeka and have been excited to try new places and food. I chose Wheel Barrel tonight based on the excellent reviews. I wish I had the experience everyone else seems to have had. We got the soft pretzel with queso and a side of mustard, which was amazing. My husband got the Mafia sandwich and I got the Easy Caprese and both were mediocre. The cheese wasn't melted on my sandwich at all, and I wasn't a fan of the flavors but that would have been easy to dismiss had the server not been absolutely awful. Our server was clearly unhappy to be at work and basically threw out napkins and waters down at our table with an expression that said "you are an inconvenience to me". She stood slouched over taking our order with her hands in her pockets. I honestly thought she was sick or something was wrong with her because of the way she acted. It was a pretty crummy experience and I hate leaving negative reviews but unfortunately we won't be back. read more

This was my first visit to The Wheel Barrel and it was amazing. I ordered The Mafia, which could best be described as a gourmet sandwich, and it was absolutely delicious. It was difficult to decide which sandwich to order because they all looked so good. My friends also raved about their sandwiches. The inside dining room was very appealing with it's rustic brick walls and the patio outside was lovely due the perpect weather. Can't wait to go back and try a different sandwich. read more

I had the Jalepeno popper sandwich and it was very delicious. 4 stars instead of 5 because the Jalepeno was barely roasted. They tried to give us two different peoples orders before our own food was finally ready. I had the Olga sandwich and it was fine but nothing earth shattering. I bought the food To-Go (Tree Hugger, BLT, & Hangover) because my friends needed to try this too. My favorite has to be hangover. Loved the combination! I found a slice of heaven tucked away in Topeka's arts district, a sandwich shop with a top-notch beer selection and perhaps some of the best sandwiches I've ever had. The Wheel Barrel. Whether you're looking to grab lunch, hang out and drink some (reasonably priced!) beer, or just pig out on some cheesy deliciousness, this place is great. The sandwiches: the bread to content ratio is surprisingly on point. Most sandwich places promote artisanal bread with flax seeds and all that jazz and yet fail to produce an eatable sandwiches - I'm either coughing up bread crumbs, because the bun is super think, or the sandwich is falling apart because the bread is too thin. Not this place. The sandwiches remain in tact until the very last bite. And don't get me started on the contents. One word: delicious. The customer service was excellent also!!!! read more

Best grilled sammiches and soups in town. They have vegetarian options and occasionally vegan. Dessert sandwiches are WONDERFUL! Along with pretzels with a choice of marinara or cheese. My favorite is the jalapeño popper sandwhich. Certain sandwiches may sound like a weird mix. But I promise they are the BEST! Great and friendly service along with both of the owners! I'm rating this place 5 stars. Although the meal that I had maybe deserves a 4 it's only because of the tomato bisque that I didn't find that great (but I'm not crazy about it anywhere). The chips were tasty (I'm not a chips person either). I LOVE grilled cheese sandwiches and this place serves it with a smile. I sat at the bar. The bartender was very nice and had a great personality. I ordered the Jalapeño Popper and ate the whole thing while my mouth and tummy smiled and cooed with delight. Very consistent food. Best pretzel in the entire state of Kansas. I've loved every sandwich I've ever tasted. The staff is very knowledgeable about their food and beverages. A new addition to the NOTO district. 5 stars for the food! All entrees and desserts are sandwiches with a cheese theme. Our group had The Humberg, The Mafia, and The Tree Hugger. We added a couple orders of the tomato bisque. We mixed up the halves of sandwiches so we could try them all. I think The Tree Hugger was tops with The Humberg as second. Not sure any of would order The Mafia - just didn't live up to our expectations even though the ingredients were fresh. Compared to your restaurant grilled cheese order, the bread is light and lightly toasted, Buttery enough, but not too oily for your hands. For dessert, we ordered the Not So Bittersweet Symphony. Nice that it was cut into four servings when it came out of the kitchen! You would think we were tired of bread by this point, but it was a nice finish to our tasty meal. 3 stars for the service: When we ordered drinks, we also ordered the pretzel with beer cheese dip (which was good once we go it!). However, the server either forgot to turn in the order or the kitchen lost it - not sure. No apologies for the oversight. We had to ask for refills constantly (it was a hot day and we are eating salty food). Nothing was cleared from the table after we finished with the plastic, paper-lined trays. Even the table next to us did not have their pile of "trash" taken away even after they settled their bill. Empty tables stood uncleaned until a new patron sat down and asked that it be wiped down. Outside: Large outside area that was pleasant on that evening (we ate inside), but not sure how it will feel in the heat of summer. Small play area for those with little ones. That could be nice for families. Overall, great menu and products from the kitchen....but the servers need either more experience or more training. read more

Found this place traveling to Topeka on business. If I lived here I'd be a regular! The staff was friendly and efficient, and business was pretty steady for a Tuesday evening. I had a PLT and it was beyond all expectations. Prices were what I'd expect.
