I feel so embarrassed to know that I drive by here all of the time, see the name and mentally comment how its cleaver, but have never stopped...until now. I had the chopped brisket sandwich and a friend had the pulled pork nachos. Both were solid winners in the food category. I still say that that chopped brisket is the best I've had in a long time. Service was unusually slow--we waited 17 minutes just to order a drink. The biggest letdown? The nachos. If you want the same size appetizer tray they used to serve, you'd have to order three now. No heads-up, no adjustment in price--just a dramatically smaller portion. Our drinks sat empty on the edge of the bar for 11 minutes before we finally flagged someone down. The wings came out with no ranch or dipping sauce, and no one asked if we wanted any. It's a far cry from how this place used to be run. Well this was such a fantastic find! Northern Michigan restaurants can be a little hit-or-miss, depending on your tastes and expectations, but this restaurant would hold its own anywhere in Michigan. Everything was FRESH and homemade, and it was excellent BBQ. Pricing is VERY reasonable especially for what you get. Staff was friendly and atmosphere was quaint country Michigan. Got cheese nachos and wings. Wings were actually really good. For both the wings and the nachos I got the sauce on the side. Got the food home and had no sauce. Also, the cheese nacho barely had cheese and it wasn't even melted. There was some kind of seasoning on the nachos too that tasted like a salt lick for deer. Pure salt. We were driving by and decided to stop in. We were the only ones there so hoped it was good. Our waitress was really nice and helpful with suggestions. I got the pulled pork sandwich. The pork was really tender and juicy. I loved it. The bun was soft and buttery. The chips were over seasoned so I wiped the seasoning off and they were much better. My husband liked them with the seasoning so it was just me who thought. They had too much seasoning. The nachos were really good. Lots of cheese sauce and meat. My husband loved them. I tasted them and I agree, they weee really good. They have a Huge bar. Tons of alcohol choices. We didn't have any alcohol but I think they could have made most anything you could want. It's a dive bar with delicious food, excellent service, and fantastic food. We were staying in Boyne Falls while in the area for a ski trip, and had to try one of the local places! Whi-Ski Inn is very much a home-town spot, and I felt like if I lived in the area I could see myself becoming a regular there. Even if not to eat, just to hang out! I actually noticed another Yelp reviewer who mentioned that they got the tacos and were surprised how good they were. I'm hoping now that I can be that person for someone else: if you're reading this, TRY THE TACOS! My friend and I both got them, and they were excellent. I believe I ordered the trio and tried one each of the brisket, chicken, and corned beef. They serve the tacos with tortilla chips as well. I honestly would have been good with 2 tacos and still been satisfied. They pack them full! The corned beef one was to die for. Like a reuben in a taco. I never knew I had needed it until I tried it. One thing that I also enjoyed about the tacos was the shells. I would describe them almost as "puffy," but not in the way that you would find if you ordered a true "puffy taco" somewhere else. They were almost airy and fluffy? Difficult to describe, but delicious. My only qualm with the food was that it was definitely pretty greasy, but that was about what I had expected and I think it would be difficult for it not to be. The brisket nachos were recommended by the saleswoman at Dunworkin in Petoskey so we tried them. They did not disappoint! Best brisket nachos I've ever had. The ribs were flavorful and tender. The beef brisket was perfection. My only complaint is that there was not enough kraut for my corn beef and not enough baked beans. The portions of the meat was oversized & the sides were undersized. Found the Whi-Ski on YELP when trying to find a place to eat dinner before heading to Boyne & the water park. Reviews and menu looked good - inhouse smoked meat and an extensive bourbon menu? sold. We got there at 430pm and it was already half full - it is a small place with seating for maybe 50? We had 4 adults and 4 kids and without taking up a ton of tables we took a 6 top and had the two littles sit on laps. Service was friendly and accommodating. Food came out really fast. Good beer menu & obviously whisky / bourbon. Started with the sweet corn bites, smoked southern sausage, white cheddar cheese curds - all were really good! The sauces that came with them were awesome, too. All seemed homemade. I had the smoked chicken nachos and the were amazing! The smoked chicken was SO GOOD. Hubby had the pulled pork sandwich and devoured it - said it was really good. The chips that came with it were so good - great seasoning. Kids had burgers & mac n cheese - they don't have a kids menu so these were off the regular menu so they were good sized portions. Let's just say I'm a regular I go here once or twice a week for at least the last five or six week mark. The last time I went there I asked them about the portion of their meet because they gave me four slices when I ordered a meal with two meats but since I got the same meat I got less meat. So when I asked them about it they said that they weigh out their portions. I said if that's the case how is it I got three slices of meat of corned beef last time and three slices of brisket but this time I ordered two briskets and I got four slices in total all the same width. They told me that they continue to weigh their meats out consistently and that they even gave me an extra ounce then normal. I said if that's the case how is it I had three slices of corned beef when I ordered two meats and three slices of brisket but when I ordered only the brisket twice I only got four slices total. They got really upset and the manager then proceeded to bring the cook out. I asked for all their names the only ones that would tell me their name was the bartender and the manager and given the heated moment after them acting the way they did over a simple question I didn't not remember their names. I did ask for the cook's name and he told me in quotations I am the one with the beard just remember that. I asked is the boss was present? can I speak with them? they said no and the cook said also no but I work under the boss. Then I asked them to let me enjoy my food and leave me. They did momentarily. I spoke with my coworker while we took a few bites of our meal. Then told him that we should just leave and this place was worthless after the way we were treated. Let's get some to-go boxes and ask for the bill and when I didn't tip the bartender they got upset about that. So they asked me if since she gave me such good customer service cuz I did say the bartender gave good service but they sucked behind the counter the manager and the cook. But they asked me since I didn't give a tip and tip her and I proceeded to let them know that I didn't want her to share tips with someone who gave me the worst service when I'm a regular. They proceeded to tell me that they don't share tips so I asked for my receipt so I could fill out her tip properly with her tip then in that time frame they continued to ask questions and talk about the situation and I continue to let them know leave me alone I'm going to tip my bartender and I'm going to leave like you asked me to and as soon as I said that they proceeded to pick up the phone and said they were going to call the police so I tipped the bartender nothing because the of the shitty service that was provided and I even let them know it was pretty pathetic that they did this to me as a regular. I told them I was going to leave a review and the manager said go ahead I'll make sure to respond okay well that only sounds like you want to make your business sound better than it is when you just gave whatever customer the worst service on your shitty day. Sorry for the long review but I had to explain the situation and if a simple question is going to spark that much of a situation for a regular customer please don't risk your own freedom going to a bar that's going to try to call the cops on you for asking about their food portions plain and simple. I love the Whi-Ski Inn's food. The BBQ meats are better than anything else I've found in Northern Michigan. The ribs, pulled pork, brisket, and corned beef are all amazing. My go-to is a half rack of ribs with sweet potato fries and baked beans. I would give the Whi-Ski Inn five stars, but every time I request to sit on their patio, they tell me that they're understaffed to work the patio. That is a crime during the summer months in my opinion. As a result, I usually get takeout and go eat outside at the park down the street. Eating at the park is nice, but I'd love to eat on their patio and drink a couple of beers and/or cocktails with my food. This would provide more revenue to the restaurant and bigger tips for staff. When I see people sitting on a patio enjoying a meal, I'm also more curious to try out that restaurant, so this would probably deliver additional business as well. Until they can open up the patio, I guess I just keep getting takeout. The BBQ really is awesome. read more
