We stopped at the hideaway sat around 3pm. There were 3 waitresses..place wasn't super busy. All 3 made eye contact with us. We sat there for 10 minutes..none of the 3 acknowledge us..,so we left. Must say, I'm a bartender in a different town...so I get being busy....but no acknowledgement, hey I'll be right with you ..nothing....I'm very patient...I know how it can get. Nice vibe, til the DJ started talking. His grievance with the crowd was gentleman in hoodies and ball caps. He place is a sports bar at best the serves its patrons in plastic cups. I ordered food that never came. Pretty consistent with the average bar in Southfield. I won't be back. read more

If I were lucky, it would be hidden better. Wish I'd never found it. Place is a disaster. I can't rate the food, but they are disorganized and possibly the rudest "hospitality" workers I've ever encountered. I had low expectations for this place and they failed to meet them. 30 minutes after we ordered they came and told us they lost our order and asked what it was. 20 minutes later i asked when we'd have our food, and the bartender said, "can't you see how busy it is?" Absolutely awful service and undercooked food. My burger was asked to be well done and it came out bright pink in the middle. By the time the waitress came back to check on us all she asked was if anyone wanted boxes and if we wanted the check. We had 6 people at the table and they charged us a 20% gratuity because we had 'a large group' when on the door it explicitly says 7 or more. Absolutely disappointed. We even told the waitress and she did nothing to fix the situation, my food or the bill. Will never be back and will never recommend anyone coming here. Ridiculous. Very very very upset. Would give it 0 stars if possible. Save yourself. Don't come here!! read more

This is an up north bar off the beaten path but known for known for their great burgers. The corned beef is made there so the Ruben is good. On the winter weekends, plan to wait for a table since it is a major stop for snowmobiles. read more

I've also been going to the Hide-A-Way Bar for 20+ years and couldn't be happier with their staff or owners (Canadian or otherwise), they are hard working and very nice people, I'd put this staff and ownership up against any Up North, MI. What a fun place to hang, eat great food and have a couple cocktails. 100% will be visiting them again soon. read more

We rented a house right behind the Hide-A-Way bar on Starvation Lake. We intended to come hit some breweries in the area and relax by the fire pit looking at the lake in the evenings for a long weekend. Unfortunately, our 10 month old puppy ran away and was lost for 7 days. We were forced to stay and look for him until he was finally caught. While we were there we went to the Hide-A-Way every night for dinner, it was our only meal of the day. We always had good service, the food was good and the staff showed so much concern and love for us we were overwhelmed. While looking for our dog our car broke down and had to be towed away for two days. Lisa, the owner offered to let us use her truck that afternoon to continue to look for the dog. She gave the trackers/trappers that caught him for us free food to bait the traps with. It is a small staff so possibly sometimes they get overwhelmed by big crowds. That could be the cause of the bad reviews below possibly. But I would recommend this bar for food, drinks and service. They were life savers for us and I cannot say enough good things about them. read more

Out of the snowmobile bars to stop for a bite to eat, this should be last on your list. The few of us that got food was late, and long after several others had gotten theirs. It was very busy and the servers kept blowing us off, saying it was busy and they would get to us when they could. However an establishment later in the day with half the staff handled just as big a crowd with ease. The kicker is, I parked my snowmobile out front. On my way out, our waitress came running after me and proceeded to give me a lecture on where I should park. If only she had that same energy taking care of her tables! We are in a northern Michigan bar being forced to listen to the Kentucky Derby at full volume. Ridiculously loud. I cannot hear ANYTHING. I asked the waitress to turn the TV down and she said she couldn't turn it down until the race was over. She was also quite rude when she said it. In fairness, I was rude back but she deserved it. We are being held hostage right now by a blaring horse race. Unacceptable. In addition, another employee came over and said "I know you're complaining, but we can't turn it any lower, there are horse people in here." I told her that a business should try to compromise and make all customers at least comfortable. A group of guys who were sitting at the table next to us also made comments to us "Can you guys hear that TV alright?" It was BLARING. Chicken tenders - sketchy molded meat, don't recommend Fries - old -n- cold Took way longer than everyone else's meal for the kids' grilled cheese to arrive. Grilled cheese... Pizza was acceptable but not something you'd make a special trip for. Burgers were good. Get the chips though...fries sucked. Experience overall was not good. Want a really GREAT meal with GREAT service? We tried The Iron Skillet in Mancelona for lunch and it was EXCELLENT! Everyone loved their meals and the service was awesome. read more

When you're on snowmobiles, there's really not much to choose from. And you base your trip on where you can get a decent burger. So pretty much any place that can get you reasonably warm and some hot food hits the spot just fine. The Hide-A-Way at Starvation Lake always entertains me. We were okay until the waitress turned the TV to full volume. We politely asked if she would turn it down a bit. She said she could not because the "horse owners" wanted to hear the Kentucky Derby. After 20 years of going here, mostly because it was the only place to go, but they were nice. It has changed since the Canadian group bought it . Cheap, arrogant owners. This is August 2021, 90 degree day. Very hot inside and not that busy, no ac actually working, because they were too cheap to pay any staff a decent wage, they have no help to serve people outside. We ask to sit outside due to the extreme heat inside, the owners and their family are sitting outside and would not allow us to be served outside. We asked if they could open a window, no they refused. I went out to the fat owners sitting outside, who were not lifting a finger to help their staff. They said no we cannot sit outside despite offering to serve ourselves the entire time. I said I will never step foot in this place again after 20 years. We went to Dingeman's bar and had a great time, a little further of a drive, but they actually are nice, their staff is nice, they use real dishes, and they have options besides greasy crap. They had live music, their fish tasted like actual fish, ( hideaway perch tastes like Canadian hockey pucks) The Hideaway is not the same under this Candadian Ownership. They are cheap, rude, and just nasty. Dingeman's Bar is a much much much better option. Hideaway I hope has to close their doors and deservedly so. Absolute junk of a restaurant and it is truly sad what they have done. read more

It's exactly what you would expect, a Dive Bar in the woods. Stop there in winter on the sleds and had a good pizza & burger.

This is not fine dining by any means but they offer good burgers, fish fry and pizza. You go there when you want a beer and a burger and it does not disappoint. Much better than a long drive to Kalkaska, Gaylord or further. Food has improved since it went under new ownership. Can't beat their $3 burger Wednesdays! Nice people as well. read more

I'm a local and was actually a regular during the summer. Hadn't been in a while and decided to stop up and get a beer or two with some Chilli cheese fries. I sat at a table for 30 minutes and was never approached, they were moderately busy, three other tables with customers and a few at the bar. But with two wait staff, who saw me come in and looked right at me a few times, it seems unacceptable. Shame hideaway. read more

The food is good. Great pizza and burgers. We go for Taco Thursday. You can't beat the tacos and price. Very good. The place has new owners who are really trying to fix the place up. So hopefully snow mobile season 2017-18 will be better for some. We have never had a problem. read more

The Starvation Lake ORV trail system area does not offer many options for stopping for a drink or food. One of the three or four choices in the area is The Hide-A-Way Bar. The Hide-A-Way is a typical dive bar type establishment that you might expect in the UP but the food is decent and there aren't many options. We have stopped here many times while snowmobiling or ORVing. Today we stopped with a group of 7 for lunch. All of us had a face covering of one sort or another (some had neck gators, some had a scarf, some had masks. We were short on typical face coverings so one of us had a full wash cloth entirely covering their nose and mouth and another had a napkin doing the same. The primary server who seemed to be in charge immediately told us that our face coverings were not acceptable and that we had to leave. We debated that our face coverings were just as effective or more so than the simple masks they were wearing but she would have no part of it. She told us we needed to leave. I pointed out that she and another worker there had their face masks pulled down beneath their noses but the irony of that scenario seemed to pass them by. Their tension immediately arose for some reason, as though they had had this battle many times with others so they had short fuses and they ordered us to leave the restaurant. We offered to buy their facemasks but they said to get out and if we didn't get out they would call the police. I asked them why they would call the police and they had no answer. This is the most ridiculous, insulting, and inappropriate behavior any of us have ever experienced at any restaurant ever. They missed out on at least $200 worth of food and beverage sales, and they were so rude that we will likely never go back there again. I have observed the rude behavior of this primary server in the past. Not sure if she's the owner or not but regardless, she has no business being in a customer service role of any nature. There were so many opportunities to de-escalate the situation but she seemed more interested in throwing around her weight and picking a fight. The entire scene was absolutely ridiculous. I wish I had recorded it. I would certainly post it on all the social media channels. It would make for great entertainment. I would highly suggest you avoid this establishment unless you are prepared to take the abuse from the staff there in order to get access to average food with horrible service. I would highly suggest you spend a few extra minutes on the trail and go visit the new Bear Lake Inn or the Frederick hotel or Settings Restaurant when they open back up. All three of those establishments have better food and are extremely customer friendly. There's probably a good reason why on such a gorgeous Sunday afternoon, right at lunchtime, there were only a couple of cars in the parking lot of the Hideaway Bar. If Management writes a rebuttal to this review and makes some claim that we were unreasonable or caused a scene, I have seven witnesses to the contrary. The primary server at the Hideaway unnecessarily caused this ruckus and made no attempt to de-escalate the situation. Spend your money somewhere else. You will have a much better experience. read more

Friendly atmosphere, good food, and always a fun time out. The food will exceed your expectations. Whenever I am up north I stop in to watch a game and have some delicious pizza and cold beer. I've been coming for a few years and I met the new owners when I was there for NYE. They went out of their way to make sure everyone was taken care of and happy.
