This review is far overdue as we were there back in early July while on a road trip. We were just talking about it and I remembered that I needed to write this review. When we arrived there were no closed signs or anything but they were having a graduation party. Asked about takeout and they insisted that we join the party and wouldn't accept any payment, only accept a donation to the graduate if we wanted to (of course we did). This actually worked to our favor because we don't eat much so we got to sample very reasonable size portions of several options we might not have gotten to if we purchased a full meal to split. Also, since we were traveling, we wouldn't have been able to keep leftovers and would have felt bad about wasting it. It was also nice to meet and chat with folks from the area. It was one of the highlights of our first trip to this incredible state. The barbecue was so good we're still talking about it months later. The meats were exceptional. Perfect seasoning. Perfect smoke. Obviously high quality meat to start with. The sides were very satisfying as they were traditional, but at a very high standard. This was a place that would beat most, if not all of our local southern joints hands down. I'm very fussy about my BBQ. Because of the reviews we decided to try it. Brisket is the best I've ever tasted. Perfectly done. Pulled pork is excellent also. I had the dinner sampler. Sausage, I had the jalapeño, cheddar. 10/10. Pulled pork 9/10. Brisket 10/10. Mac & cheese 10/10. I used to live on the Virginia-north Carolina border & love the BbQ sauce from there. This was too sweet. But northerners might like it. (Yellow sauce) They also have original sauce. Mac & cheese tastes like my homemade straight out of a southern kitchen. You've never seen a baked potato like theirs. Huge with triple the normal amount of toppings you can put on it. Dessert- coconut cream pie. Disappointing. Peach cobbler is so easy to make & would taste much better. Huge & I mean huge proportions. My dish could easily feed 2-3 people. They are only open a couple days a week. Convenient location close to I-75, first impression is that it is a tiny place with a big, deliciously smoky smell outside. Jill was a great help as we ordered. I ordered a pulled pork sandwich with the Sweet Heat sauce and a side of potato salad. Partner ordered the Pulled Pork "Mac & Meat" which was literally a 1 lb deli tub with Mac & cheese and meat--about half and half of each. My sandwich was very good--I had added the crunchy onions, and it was a great decision!. The potato salad was also tasty. My partner's lunch was also very enjoyable. It wasn't life changing...but it's pretty fantastic for Michigan BBQ! Super friendly owners. We were the only ones to eat inside, but while we were there, we saw many coming in for takeout. We were super impressed with the bbq. The brisket was tender, Smokey, and well seasoned, the pulled pork was moist, and the sweet sausage was great as well. Sides were very solid as well, the Mac and cheese was tangy and well done, and the brussel sprouts were perfect. The inside is clean, and the kitchen is organized and clean as well, which I always think is a good sign. Service was fast and friendly. You order at the counter and they bring it out to you. Chef treated us to a brisket sample as soon as we sat down. It was good so wife and I both had brisket. Tender, flavorful, and just enough fat to keep it interesting. Personally, I would like a bit more smoke flavor. Coleslaw was creamy with just enough sweet and sour to give it a nice tang. I also tried the sweet sausage they make in house and it was excellent. Not greasy and an interesting mix of sweet and heat. I would like to see more combo offerings so I can try different things without going the pricey a la carte route. Be aware, the place is small inside with only 2 tables. I enjoyed the pulled pork bbq sandwich, a double side of roasted redskins, a single of coleslaw, and a slice of corn bread. Mmmmm The pulled pork was just the perfect amount as was the bbq sauce. Nice tasting, full of flavor and perfect bite size chunks. The coleslaw was a creamy delight, such a great creamy texture and flavor. Owners were so talkative and friendly, even after a long day...and could have easily rushed us out (didn't notice they were closing shortly after we arrived), but they were so welcoming! Excellent customer service and we were given a lot of extras that my husband enjoyed sampling! The pulled pork was alright, cooked well, but not a whole lot of flavor...the brisket was absolutely amazing, had a slight charred/crisp top too...Mac and cheese my son devoured...diced potatoes were ok, they tasted like regular old potatoes in butter and oil (wouldn't bother ordering)...the loaded baked potato was enough for two adults and/or one starving adult; it was the largest potato I've ever seen! A few pops and water to choose for drinks. All in all, very well priced and love supporting locals who have a passion for their restaurant and home town! Cute southern decor inside and out; Loved that you could smell the smoker as soon as you pulled in the lot. Parking is a little tight/lacking and there are only two small tables inside ( just in case you're thinking this is a sit down restaurant), but it somehow works! I'd love to see hush puppies on the menu and I may have missed seeing coleslaw? We were in town and decided we'd try some barbecue. Well, this is THE place to go... not just in Michigan but anywhere else. And when I say this, you need to know I am from Texas, so I know barbecue. I had the brisket and my husband had the pulled pork. Both were seasoned to perfection and totally delicious! I also had a side of macaroni and cheese and I have to say that this was one of the best I have ever had. The owners spent some time over lunch talking to us. Burnt ends were delicious. No sauce needed! MAC N cheese was also very good, a close second to my wife's. Polish sausage was delicious as well. My wife and I stopped here on a Saturday afternoon, I ordered the dinner platter and my wife ordered the barbecue macaroni and cheese and meat. On the platter I got brisket pulled pork and jalapeno sausage. My wife got brisket in her macaroni. The brisket was one of the best I've had. Extremely tender and extremely juicy. Well seasoned and ample portions for the price. The pulled pork was a tad under seasoned but still very delicious. The macaroni and cheese was fresh and excellent. The jalapeno smoked sausage was delicious. The owner and staff were very friendly. They do have limited seating indoors, however they have a large outdoor patio with seating. We usually get a bite to eat as we pass through Gaylord on our periodic trips up north. We'd given up on having BBQ after the shenanigans of the other BBQ place in town (the "free-dumb" one), so we were very excited to find Jake and Jill's and ecstatic once we tried it. Recently stopped in on our way up to Boyne from Rochester and it was fantastic. The brisket is the softest and most flavorful brisket I've ever had and the sausage is also phenomenal.
