This review is for the White Box located in the Oasis Grand Sens. First off, they have a rope across the entrance, which leads you to expect you are in for a special treat. The hostess checked my wristband to see if I would be permitted to have lunch here. Then she checked my name and room number. Then she undid the rope and gestured me to enter. Those already eating here had either pasta or pizza. I don't really "do" pasta, so I opted for the ribeye steak and carmelized onion pizza. I also had their only beer, Dos XX. When the pizza arrived, the crust had barely been in the oven and was just a shade past white. There were 5 tiny pieces of grey meat and an equal number of tiny raw white onion slivers. As I attempted to pick up a slice of this uninviting looking mess, grease ran off the cheese and down my arm as the glob of cheese also began to slide away. It was completely tasteless and the texture and presentation, just nasty. The waiter brought me another beer without asking. Maybe he was hoping I would be drunk and not be able to notice what was on the plate in front of me? Completely nasty! read more

I had a beautiful dinner here with my parents outdoors. The view of the white sand and bright blue water was really beautiful. It would have been really romantic had I not been on that dinner date with my parents. Our table was set up with candles and I could see that some recently newlyweds had a table set up before us (closer to the beach) with heart-shaped flowers arranged. Food presentation is lovely. This place is more upscale and is somewhere you might want to dress up at. It's located within a hotel. Portion sizes are smaller. They have a great selection of seafood. I'm only giving this place 2 STARS because their lunch was actually pretty good and service was great. Try at your risk. You may get dressed up all nice.. wait for a spot to get in and maybe not even get a chance to eat!! BUT other than their lunch, I would give this place 1 STAR due to not even being able to get in for dinner despite being a guest at their "all inclusive" Grand Sens Oasis resort. What we were told was that they can only seat about 20 people. FIRST OF ALL... they don't take any reservations in advance. WHYYYYYY????!!!! They don't take any calls ahead of time or anything. Not even for the guests staying right at their very own resorts. SUCKS when they don't even cater to their own guests. Dinner starts at 6:30pm so if they reach the 20, they start taking down names and their next seating isn't until like 8ish or so. Honestly, they probably only serve around 20-40 people per night. So when you see all the nicely dressed people just hanging out around the pool area at the resort, these are the people waiting to see if they have a chance to even get in for dinner. So they seriously could be waiting for nothing. The hostess didn't seem like she cared... she must give the bad news to people all the time so maybe that's why. But they should take reservations because people have to get dressed up to even dine here. A couple we met actually got in and they said their food was not worth it and actually was pretty horrible. So I'm glad we didn't waste our time. Despite not getting in for dinner... the 2 stars are truly for their lunch service. Pizza was great and the shrimp mushroom pasta was good. Our server was also very quick to take our order and get our drinks out. It's just unfortunate that dinner was not such a great experience. Very good UNUSUAL food. Interesting concept: Elegant shared small plates, with a wide variety of dishes to choose from. Gastropub concept. In this "all inclusive resort", very little wine by-the-glass available. However, for purchase, they have an extensive list of a wide variety of wines. Service is excellent! Of all the restaurants on campus that we were able to visit, this was second only to Careyes to us, a couple of middle aged serious foodies! Whoever is posting 5 star reviews of this place is definitely on drugs. Either everything on Yelp are all paid reviews or these diners have never eaten anything better than microwaved Mac and cheese. Be warned. Calling for reservations required the attendant to tell me to call and queue in the morning. Even after doing so and arriving they said they did not locate my reservation but would seat me (how pretentious). My first impression: how ridiculously tacky the restaurant was. The decorations felt like I was eating inside a doll house. Food: absolutely abysmal. This is the first time in my entire life I stopped mid service to cancel the meal. It was embarrassing for me to tell the staff that I had to say something for the sake of the restaurant's future. Everything tasted and looked like a 5 year old created or crafted the dishes, it was by FAR the worst meal I've ever had and that's saying a lot considering how much I travel and how low my expectations can be when I'm tired, and starving. This experience was so bad I have nothing to compare it to. The only shining star here was the service. They comped the meal except for my wine even though I only obliged to 1/4th of the courses and told them that I couldn't in good conscious, continue the meal. Our server was magnificent, and I applauded his English skills and understanding of my disappointment of the meal so much so that I was happy to pay double the cost of the wine solely as his tip. Stay as far away as possible from this restaurant and many others this town has when it comes to fine dining. Photos go a long way in representing a true representation of your meal but be warned the food isn't comparable to what you may be used to in the States. When they are demanding high US prices, you should expect a comparable level of FLAVOR, CREATIVITY and PRESENTATION. read more

People come from all the other hotels to eat here. It's extremely good. It's smaller tapas style and so what you order you get one per person at the table. I was fascinated at the cheese platter, it easily compares to anything you get at home in Vancouver for $20! The burgers were awesome and so was the ceviche. The blackened prawns were amazing. Don't let the blackened look make it seem like they taste burnt- the charcoal is simply an after taste and wonderful This restaurant only seats 20 and has three sittings. We were able to walk right in. If you have to wait they will let you sit on the patio and you can order drinks while you wait. Ok wow.. Here I am at my resort and there is a new restaurant here calling itself a Gastrobar. Being in a resort I was a little wary but I was wrong. They serve food here something like tapas where they bring a menu item at a time for sharing. It was really incredible. From the best oysters my wife ever had, to great sashimi it was perfect all around. One of the courses was fish and chips.. And that was probably the best battered fish I ever had. Johnatan Sanchez "El Boss" does NOT fit the Grand Oasis beautiful relaxed atmosphere. Its our 3rd time at the Grand Oasis, gold bracelet, lifestyle member and for the first time I felt the stress of dealing with not needed arrogance. My advice to "El bosso": 1. When you have clients at the check in pedestal dont just blow your whistles calling your adjunct, but instead put a smile and greet us. Dont act like LA underground club owner. Ignorance. 2. When you promise a table for 6, please let people know in advance thats ONLY for outside. Also you didn't honor that because the "weather was bad". It was cloudy but we would've ate outside :) 3. DONT CALL SECURITY WHEN TALKING TO A 5 feet tall woman, asking you questions about your train of thought (see 2.)!!!!!!! Tried this place last night. Food is a semi set menu get to chose items from 9 course meal. Food was mediocre pizza tasted like salami on cracker. Only thing good was the avocado surprise. Lots of servers but service was just ok. Lots of menu items seem to repeat themselves. Fried egg on French fries. Burger and French fries. Salami on French fries salami on pizza . Get the drift. Let me start my review with basic but good to know information....... The White Box is located in the Grand Oasis Cancun hotel and is open to the public. The evening dinner is priced at $45.00 US per person which includes dinner and unlimited house wine and liquor. If paying by credit card, their system isn't equipped to add a tip, so bring extra cash. There are only (if I remember correctly) 6 tables of 4 and some bar height seating inside plus some extra seating outside, and they don't take reservations, so plan your evening accordingly. If you are a party of 2, you could be sharing a table with another couple. Seatings start about 6:30 pm on a first come, first served basis. We heard that they are also open for lunch, but check first on that. That out of the way, let me tell you about our wonderful dinner with another couple at this gastrobar. We arrived with our friends shortly before 6:30 pm and gave the host our name. We were shown to an outdoor seating area overlooking the ocean where we were offered drinks until the restaurant was ready to open. There was also some musical entertainment going on close by which sounded great. When ready to open, we were given a great table in the corner of the restaurant which has glass exterior walls overlooking the beach, that make this small restaurant seem bigger than it is. The menu is comprised of 9 categories of tasting-sized dishes including dessert...about 4 or 5 choices per category and you pick one dish from each category to share. Everything we ate from the SURPRISE AVOCADO, the CURED FOIE TERRINE SERVED WITH TINY APPLES AND COTTON CLOUD (use your imagination or see my pictures for the CLOUD) WILD FISH 'TIRADITO" WITH ORANGE AND TANNED ONION, TEMPURA ASPARAGUS WITH TANGERINE HONEY along with TATEMADO SHRIMPS (blackened with black tempura), BABY OCTOPUS WITH CARAMELIZED ONIONS AND "BROKEN" POTATOES, BBQ VEAL BRIOCHE BURGER WITH MELTED CHEESE, SEAFOOD RICE PAELLA and CARAMELIZED BEEF RIBS. Everything was "out of this world" delicious!!! I was a little out of my comfort zone on the octopus dish, but with a bite or 2 with the other ingredients, it was wonderful! We had the same dishes as our friends for the main dishes, but for the desserts we had the STRAWBERRIES MARINATED IN VINEGAR AND "NITRO" CREAM (strawberries and cream) and our friends had the WARM CHOCOLATE CAKE, CARAMEL AND VANILLA CREAM (served in a mason jar). Half of the anticipation of waiting for each dish was for how creatively and beautifully presented each dish was...like a work of art, especially the cloud. It was a wonderful evening, enjoying wonderful food, service, and atmosphere with our friends at The White Box and have recommended it to others at our resort. This restaurant was a-mazing! I was there back in May for a friend's bachelorette party. The restaurant was completely accommodating for 14 girls. We loved the food, service, and experience so much that we went back for our last night there. I can't speak well enough of this restaurant, everything was spectacular! We were actually staying at the Oasis and this is definitely the best restaurant on site. The fact that it was included as part of our all inclusive package (aka we didn't have to pay for anything) the service was still amazing and we tipped them very well. If you're ever in Cancun, I would definitely recommend going here, although probably not if you'll have kids in your group. read more

This is a hidden gem. It was a bit difficult to find in the maze of pools and gardens of the Pyramid at the Grand Oasis resort, but it was worth the search. We were staying at a different resort, and expected to pay a pretty penny for this 8 course dinner. We were wrong. My girlfriend and I had cocktails, the 8 course dinner and a bottle of wine for a total of $90 (before tip). I have never before had such a good meal for such a great price. The foie tartine with cotton candy was particularly spectacular (surprisingly not overly sweet). The service was great. The view of the beach was amazing. Everything about The White Box is top notch! It is akin to a tapas bar but much more upscale. The decor is simple but elegant. Wait staff, especially Ricardo, were very attentive. The menu consisted of 9 courses, with 4 choices for each course. From the 4 choices, we got to choose one item which was shared. The tuna tartare and ceviche were delectable! It was my birthday and I was presented with a specially made cheesecake on a beautifully decorated plate. Along with the wait staff, the whole restaurant sang happy birthday.
