This is the best format for senior living. Each house holds just 10 residents in 10 bedrooms, split between 2 hallways on either side of a central common area with dining space, living area, and an enormous kitchen where staff prepares meals and residents may use space, also. Each bedroom is private with en suite bathroom equipped with a walk in shower. Facility provides twin bed, sitting chair, side table, and dresser. There is space to personalize as well. We plan to add 2 sitting chairs for guests and a larger dresser. There is a large closet, between 5-6' wide. Laundry is done on a schedule and not mixed so chance if items missing is very low. Nurse is available, aids are assigned on shifts and are very capable and friendly. The center publishes activity calendar including social outings and shopping trips. There is a hair salon and manicures and pedicures can be scheduled.

At the beginning of Jan. she had to be moved because we private pay currently where she is at & would be switching over to Medicaid as our money has run out & the place she currently is doesn't have a locked skilled nursing department & that is where she would be moved so it wasn't safe for her not to be in locked faculty. I was told rudely by admissions director there was nothing she could do & her hands were tied. I then decided to call administrator of Riverview & talk with her she was EXTREMELY disrespectful to me & acted like it was no big deal they had done this to me. I was lied to by them & they didn't care I had to scramble to find a new place to put my mom & everywhere has waiting list so not an easy task when you've been told by a place they would be ready by beginning of Jan. & we're counting on that. The communication from this place is terrible, they don't call you back, you have to do all the calling & they don't call back current nursing home to get paper work done. If this is how they run there business I guess I should be glad my mom isnt there, can't imagine the care she would get.

Even if you must pay for a meal there, do so and experience as a guest, the big meal of the day: dinner at noon. Talk to at least three different residents, especially those who need the type care your loved one may require. The quality of care is also important, but if the facility refuses to pay competitive or above average wages do you really think the nursing staff will even be average? When we do arrive at our twilight years depression, fear, and basic comfort without pain become our top concerns. The food and quality of care were a rude awakening. If my father had simply accepted an unhappy existence by not stubbornly rebelling, forcing a rapid eviction from the Willows, nether Mom nor Dad would ever have found their final home at Elmwood at the Shawhan. The food and quality of care is much better. They are both much happier now. Be cautious, patient, and thorough when interviewing possible final residences for your loved ones. Ask about tv, activities, and transportation into town. When we reach our twilight years studies have shown that people live longer when they stay physically and emotionally active, Lastly, do not allow yourself to be manipulated by those pollished sales people significantly influenced by huge commissions and bonuses upon new resident signups. You do not want your loved ones to feel like just another number in some 'puppy mill' money farm, do you? TRUST ONLY FOUR THINGS: 1. In person experiences with actual residents. TAKE GOOD NOTES. 2. Experience the food at Noon. 3. Get copy of actual activity schedule. 4. Ask about location of suggestion box. On a good day the Willows scores a 2.

I had 2 phone calls for "incidences". 1 of them wasn't even her fault. She was grabbed so harshly by an aide her hand and arm where bruised. Thats what the Director of Nursing told me on the phone. The state report however stated the incident happened from her punching a bathroom door. They lie to families and apparently on state reports. On December 22 I was called into an office and told The Admin Team made the decision that the Elms wasn't able to handle her. Her diagnosis never changed since her admittance. I had to move my mom the day after Christmas. I was in that place more often then some of the staff, 5 out of 7 days a week. Only 2 plan of care meetings both held August! Never was anything ever conveyed they couldn't manage her. Incompetent is an understatement. Do NOT put your loved one here. I witnessed a double amputee in a wheelchair being let out to smoke & then being forgot about. He banged on the door be let back in and no one was at the nursing desk nor a aide to hear him. I waited and finally got up and let him in. This is one of many I could share. Its awful enough to have to put your loved one into a facility but to have to deal with all of this neglect and incompetence. I feel sorry for every resident in this place.
