I stopped in because I thought I was gonna grab me a box of cut waters into my surprise. They did not have it while I was looking around. I noticed they had a deli me and my daughter we were starving so I grabbed what I thought I seen was the Italian combo and men let me say I was very impressed using when you get an Italian it's always messy and kinda ugly looking, but when I opened it, I could not believe how extremely pretty it was and it was a really good amount of meat in it, but I always dread getting an Italian sandwich because it's always so messy, but this sandwich was made very, very pretty and surprisingly I ate 1/2 and could not eat the other very impressed when I go to another appointment I will definitely come back. A true local gem. Excellent, reasonably-priced wine selection, great sandwiches, interesting selection of beer and cider, fantastic cheese, chocolate, non-alcoholic drinks, etc. They even have sardines, and real crunchy French baguettes. Lovely store with great selection of wines, cheeses and beers. Two rooms dedicated to wine are guaranteed to have something you like. There are shelves of liquor, but it's certainly not their strong suit. There are many fridges of beer, including lots of cool local beers. I particularly like a seasonal IPA called "G Fresh" I've only ever found here. For cheeses and other things it also appears very strong. Staff is nice and it is one of the few options in its area. I have been frequenting the Cask for maybe 7, 8 years now. I cannot speak to their sandwiches, too little experience, but their wine selection incl their wines of the month, is excellent and all staff are very helpful, knowledgeable, and not afraid to say "I don't know" when trying to figure out what we might enjoy. Many of the staff have been there for years. Deli counter is also wonderful with a wide range of cheeses and coldcuts. read more

My beloved old Wine & Cheese Cask is back! First, sales are back. They're no longer promised to be quarterly, but the latest lasted for a month, which is much longer than quarterly sales used to in pre-pandemic days. Buying a mixed case of their wine with 20% off is a must whenever they have a sale. Second, much of the old staff is back, and so it the old friendly attitude. If you'd like advice, they have advice. If you'd like to be left alone looking, you can take your sweet time. It also turns out overzealous carding of middle-aged foreigners is not a new store policy, but an idiosyncratic idea of individual employees. All in all, this is once again one of my two favorite wine stores in town. Its very considerable merits outweigh the annoying risk of an idiosyncratic rejection of my driver's license. read more

There's no place in Cambridge or Somerville like it. (Maybe Formaggio Kitchen, but WCC is a little less tight.) Oh and GET THE SANDWICHES. You can build your own with so many different combinations. My sando of choice: Clear Flour sourdough baguette (local bakery in Brookline, look them up and go!), smoked turkey, brie, lettuce, tomatoes, salt & pepper, oil & vinegar. Its BOMB. The guy in the back (Steve?), presumably there to help, sat like he's in a library studying for an exam and might as well have a "Do not disturb!" sign posted there. I asked for help and he barely picked up his head and pointed to...who knows what, since the place is like an overstocked warehouse of wines. He was palably non-communicative and annoyed, who knows why, mumbling through his mask. I walked closer to be able to hear him (I, too, was masked) and he jumped backward out of his chair and scolded, "Hey, do you know that we're supposed to be 6 feet apart?" Wow. Really? Before leaving I relayed this rude, bizarre experience to the manager who was no more life-like than the other guy, refusing to say that he'd have a talk with the guy in the back nor registering any kind of authentic apology. In fact, he seemed to find my experience entertaining. Think twice about the W&C Cask, especially if you're a wine-buying woman. read more

Most terrible experience ever with a liquor store in my life. I will never go back. 1. Extremely snobbish store manager and rude staff, the people in the back and the cashier girls all have their noses up in the air 2. Dusty and smelly. I smell mold here and there. 3. Both staff and store manager have no clue of many things. They don't even know their own inventory. Wow! No one seems to have passion in what they are doing. The cashiers couldn't be more salty. 4. Small selection in many types of liquor 5. Why is this store still in business? Try Formaggio instead! You get what you paid for. If you want something of a better quality and be treated with respect by the store staff, go somewhere else. I live around the corner from this business. On our short walk home after day care pickup on a Friday, my wife and I stopped to pick up wine for dinner. We spent 10 minutes picking out a bottle. I forgot my wallet at home as the stop was spontaneous. My wife had her wallet and full identification. We had our 12 mo old daughter with us. The business refused to serve us because I did not have my identification. This the type of service you can expect. We won't be back. read more

For a quick and easy hunk of your favorite spanish cow's milk, basil-infused brie, or ancient gouda, you can grab something precut in their cold case, or order your cheese by the pound. It's a shame that this is the closest liquor store to my house: with a little bit of kindness, they could have ensured a steady stream of boozy cash-flow over the next six years as I drink my way to a Ph.D. We ran down the street in the middle of a hot rainstorm for potables, I with my wallet in hand, my girlfriend with the umbrella. We selected three large bottles of Belgian ale (each at about seven dollars) and made our way to the clerk, a surly-looking squeak who was probably only old enough to consume the pungent selection of cheeses he was facing. "I.D.?" English is his first language, and this is the warm greeting I get. I produce the aforementioned card, and he points, finger extended, at my girlfriend. "I need hers." The young (though not particularly young-looking) woman in question points to the pajamas she's thrown on in haste at the house. "I left my purse back home." At this point in time, the kind young man working the counter puts the middle and index finger of each hand in the air up and wiggles them into little surly quotations marks. "Oh," he drips, "you left your purse at home, did you?" Rather shocked, we walked out without a further move, and do not return for the next half-decade. I understand quite well that it may be store policy -- nay, even Massachusetts state law -- to card each member of a party. But the asshole who manned the counter and decided to inform us of his suspicion by mocking his customers has ensured that I and my friends steer clear of this joint and its average selection of averagely priced drinks and comestibles. I'll pour one out when they turn over management to some kinder individuals. read more

I don't understand what all the hoopla about this place is about. Yes, they have a decent selection of wine but I can get that anywhere. I mean, I am in drunken Boston, aren't I? What I venture in here for is the second half of the name. Cheese! Now if you're going to incorporate cheese into your store's name, you should really have an outstanding selection of cheeses. While this place does have some cheese, including high end type stuff, it doesn't have even close to the amount and variety I'd expect from a store with "cheese" in it's name. Maybe my expectations are really high, having grown up with stores that don't have cheese in their name, yet have a far superior collection to this place. What I also dislike is that a lot of the cheese is behind the counter. I like to look at my cheese (wow, this is starting to sound dirty in a gross way) and see what it is before I buy it. And I want to do that without having to ask store staff to get me a few hunks of cheese, and be all bothersome. While I've gotten a couple of really tasty cheeses from them, I know I can find similar stuff elsewhere. And probably a better selection too. read more

I'm with the person below who mentioned the poor quality of service. The women behind the cheese counter could not be less helpful or unfriendly if they tried. I live nearby and stop here frequently for, you guessed it, wine and cheese. What can I say? I like to drink wine and eat cheese. The people working in the wine area are awesome --- knowledgeable, helpful, friendly, attentive. Its a bizarro world on the other side of the shop. Its now become a game to see if any of the women will smile, say "Hello" or "Thanks" or express any other kind of emotion that includes gratitude for your business. And its not that they are channelling 'Clerks' with some superiority complex by knowing more about Cheese. They just could care less than you entered their little world for 15-20 minutes. Its a shame when the staff can't support the food and wine appropriately. If you are so unhappy working in this environment, you should quit and do something that makes you happy. read more

They not only had an Australian Shiraz, but they had about 20, including the specific vintage I was looking for (though I imagine that may have been a bit of a fluke). The Wine & Cheese Cask is great for Ward Two/Inman Square residents. Buying booze around here isn't always easy. (You win, Massachusetts Puritans.) So in that way it's an asset for the neighborhood. But there are a few confusing things here. For one, their local craft beers are never refrigerated--fine if you're buying ahead of time/planning, but sometimes a guy just wants to kick back with a Slumbrew Happy Sol that's already chilled. This is only galling because there's a craft beer fridge at the front that houses some seriously subpar brew. Two, the staff doesn't make eye contact and is almost never, ever willing to help you solve a cheese problem. Why have a fancy cheese/meat counter if the staff is unwilling to express interest in your straightforward question? Maybe it's the time of day I come in--after the 8-5 workday--and the cheese/meat people have already gone home. I don't know. For how close it is to my apartment, and how ingrained it is in the neighborhood, I just don't feel all that comfortable here. read more

Love the Wine and Cheese Cask and they were a lifesaver during the pandemic. I could email and ask for 6 bottles of wine, with a couple of filters each time (like, all red, half Spanish, average $15 a bottle and mix it up) and add couple of hunks of cheese. I'd pull up and load the box into the trunk and be ready to face (and facemask) the next couple weeks. I think they will still do this, but now I'm back to going into the store and receiving excellent advice on wine facemask to facemask. The employees are kind and helpful. If I want to splurge, the recommendation are always wonderful. If I am economizing, nobody blinks an eye if I say I'm looking for under $10 easy drinking. And no one has ever tried to up-sell me. I've been coming here since I was a little kid... for the Haribo frogs. As embarrassed as I am to admit it, I'm not a big wine connoisseur, so I won't say much about the wine here other than the selection seems wide, with a good mix of low and high end bottles. There's also beer, some liquor, fruit juice, and a great $10 Spanish champagne if you're not a wine fanatic. However, I could go on and on about the cheese! Cranberry Wensleydale, Shropshire blue, triple creme brie... any kind of cheese you could dream up is here! The Wine & Cheese Cask is the perfect place to go to construct a killer cheese plate or if you just want one wedge to spice up your dinner (or snacktime... no judgment). They also stock a great selection of candy and fancy snacks. But don't get the "artisan" tortilla chips here, they're gross... They have baguettes and other breads--I think from Clear Flour in Brookline--although they can run out by dinnertime. I haven't had the chance to try a sandwich, but judging from the cheese and bread selection, they must be amazing. If you're in the area, stop by! Prices are way up there. Some of the wines are X2 the price when compared to say Kappy's or other places. Staff is nice and somewhat knowledgable. Yeah, their price point is a little high as compared with local competitors but I feel like you're asking for that at the corner of Beacon and Kirkland. Varying dry ciders, so much amazing (fairly priced) cheeses arraying from cow to sheep to goat, and a beautiful wine selection. Need a fancy Austrian Gewurztraminer or a balanced Willamette Valley Pinot Noir? They have your back better than most other selections in the area. I could easily shop here every day and still not have tried everything they have to offer. A gem smack-dab between Porter and Inman Squares, they have an incredible selection of beer, wine, liquor, cheese, cured and smoked meat, not to mention any other classy munchies you may want, all with prices that are fair for the quality and variety they offer. Anytime I need to throw together a last-minute party or pick up something to bring, this is my one-stop shop. The staff are not smothering, but are open and friendly if you seek them out for advice. They picked some wine for a dinner party that was declared "spot-on" by the hosts. The beer selection is varied, but not as diverse as the wine. Still, we were able to pick up a six-pack from a local brewery that we had not yet tried; that, combined with a hearty wedge of Drunken Goat cheese and a stick of sorpressata, was a nice change of pace for our typical night in with friends. read more

I shop here whenever I'm in Boston since it's around the corner from my brother-in-law's place. It's been the stop for me and the wife as a last second gift venue before invading his home. I'm a big fan of the wine selection here since I can find a lot of bottles that aren't available to me in Atlanta. Georgia also has some wonderfully archaic rules about not being able to order wine over the internet, so if I want some of my favorites from the Pacific Northwest I end up buying them when visiting Boston and send them home. I wasn't thrilled with the champagne selection on my last visit, it was the first time I've noticed it. There isn't much of a middle ground available between the $7 a bottle junk and the $45 stuff. The boyfriend and I love this place. He works at Whole Foods, but he still comes here sometimes to buy cheese because they carry stuff that he can't get at Whole Foods. Their selection is nice, and the staff are actually very helpful with recommendations. Also a very good wine selection. We found a good selection in all price points, so no matter what type of wine you're going for, you should be happy. Decent mid-to-high end chocolates, including some stuff I hadn't seen before.
