Beautiful presentation, but we walked into the place and the bartender/assistant manager didn't greet us at all and let us walk all the way to the back of the restaurant and order food, just to come ask us if we were all 21+. Two girls in the party were not. He told us we can still order but we have to leave and eat our food outside !!!! He told us that when we walked in WE should have greeted HIM! Ha. The Woods is fun with a group of friends when you've had more than your fair share of drinks, but it was definitely not my vibe. One extra star for the backyard area away from the crowd and terrible staff indoors. Williamsburg (off Bedford) is definitely attracting the recent college grads & the Murray Hill ex-frat bros, so the Woods is naturally juxtaposed a block from Freehold to gather all of the wash-ups that want an experience exactly like that place. The crowd is young, pretty drunk, and the music the one time I went there made no sense. The DJ didn't understand how to mix genres and the hype man creeped me out for most of the time. It was a $7 cover to get in for everyone (which was not worth it). The inside is decorated with tchotkes by the bar, and the back/outside is where I enjoyed my time the most. My friend and I ordered a drink to close out my tab ($20 minimum) and someone accidentally spilled the entire drink on the ground when they bumped into our part of the bar. My friend asked the bartender nicely if he could make another drink, but his response was "So you want me to spend money on your mistake?" I've only been here on Wednesday nights for ladies nights... yeaaa #ladies! I'm a big fan of this hip venue. At first, I thought there was a specific theme to the night because I thought folks were wearing costumes then I realized that it was just friendly hipsters who like to dance... which starts around midnight... the dance floor and bar It's pretty quiet until 11pm... Overall: Woods Outdoor area + drink deals + dancefloor + good dj = great nights. I have been to the woods a hand full of times and always enjoy myself. I gave 4 stars instead of five because there is always a cover charge and they don't take card at the door, there is also a minimum purchase with card at the bar which is typical but often inconvenient. The crowd is mixed mid 20 somethings to mid 30 somethings.there is always a nice mix of hip hop and pop music playing. They do allot of 90's throw backs which was my era so I love that. There is an outdoor area that gets tented off in the colder months. In the back there is a long menu of food and drink available. There is also communal seating and board games in case you just want to chill with a beer after shaking your booty so hard it broke. Overall this is a dope hang out. read more

My best friend and I came here to dance up a storm on her birthday a couple weeks ago and luckily for us, it was 90's and early 2000's throwback night~! Strange odds and ends decorate the main space and behind the bar, creating a dark kitschy vibe. The outdoor area has a smoking section, an additional bar, AND a taco stand for some tasty eats if you've got the drunk munchies. Overall, a pleasant and low-key place to let loose if you don't want to deal with the typical Williamsburg bar scene. read more

The Woods is a really fun bar that you can count on for a good time with groups. If you get there around 9:30/10 on a Saturday night, there won't be a line or a charge. After that, though, be prepared to wait and pay! The drinks are strong but pricy. The music ranges from all different decades and genres, from 80s pop to 00s rock to today's hits. The DJ had some really great moments so props to him. There's an outside section and a heated second bar in the back, with a very chill vibe. The staff got a bit annoying about everyone's coats being everywhere, even if we just laid them down for a second to take a picture. Crowd is mainly late 20s/early 30s, which is a relief from the college crowd found elsewhere nearby. After a couple hours, it gets very hot and crowded in here, even with how spacious it is. I really like this place. I've been here twice so far, once for my birthday and the second for their NYE party. Both times I've danced my ass off, haha. The music starts to get good (more hip hop/rap) around 11/11:30 lol. I've asked the DJ to play Cut It and he responded he doesn't like to play rap until 11:30. A little weird but whateverrrrr. Still a good time. Drinks are good - it was cheap the first time I was here but they raised the prices of shots for NYE (shots of tequila/Jägermeister were $10....) but i'm pretty sure regular prices are like 6/7 bucks for a shot. But I'm pretty sure they diluted the Fireball shots that night. It usually burns like hell; I had two and didn't feel much of a burn. Theres three parts of this bar: the main bar/dance floor (which is pretty small and gets super crowded around 11ish on a saturday night), the outdoor seating area, and the second bar which has insane heaters!! lol. Coat check is $3. They scan IDs, and they're super strict if they think you're too drunk (so don't go to sleep/look like you're passed out lol). Just came back from @thewoodsbrooklyn where I decided to have a beer tonight. I came across a pretty sad situation. This girl came with her dog and the poor animal could barely stand. He was acting like a drunk person, peeing and puking everywhere. That situation freaked me out, so I went to speak with the young lady. Apparently the puppy dog was stoned. "What do you mean?" I said. "Were you smoking with your dog?", she said: "Oh no, he ate the weed." What?! And what are you doing here? Like, seriously?! They are playing loud music, people are drinking and dancing, and you brought your sick dog to a party night after eating your weed??? I'm pro-animal as is my best friend (she has a dog, too) and decided to call the cops to know what to do in that situation. So she called and they said to ask the bouncer to talk to her, ask her to leave, and go home preferably. So we spoke to the bouncer and he did nothing. We are glad that we spoke to the bartenders because they reacted the same way as us and went to speak to the girl, but she didn't want to leave. The manager was not at the place, but I can't believe the bouncer did nothing to help. The place shouldn't even allow animals there so late.. it was a party at night for goodness sake. I'm extremely disappointed and not going back to The Woods anymore. If we can't change people's minds, we should at least be responsible for them if we can. read more

There's the food truck in the back, party in the front. Food features tacos, french fries and other necessary carbs for drinking effectively. They're open during the day, so day drink here instead of Freehold, unless you're from Long Island and trying to stay trendy. The Woods is open late, and the music is always reliably hip-hop. Certain nights, there are themes - like the Drake night sponsored by Moet some time back. Cash bar ONLY in the back, but the front accepts cards. This place is a box of sweat and bad smells. I only go here when my friends are here. I never choose to go here even though I live very close to it. If I want a drink & a good time I'll go to the Crown Victoria on S. 2nd Street. 90% of the bartenders are quite rude. My husband ordered two drinks & the bartender refused to give him a glass of iced water and told him get water from a water dispenser with no ice that was probably sitting there for quite some time. I went with a group of people & the bouncers wouldn't let two of my friends in because they were male. Is this a joke? We were not trying to get into a club in the meatpacking district (although, I don't even think they practice this absurd policy there now). After my friend talked to the bouncers, we were all able to get in & the place was fairly empty. It's just bad business practice to refuse entry when a place isn't even close to being crowded. After we got in, a group of about five guys & no girls walked in the door. I'm changing my review to one star & never coming back if I have one more bad experience here. read more

I don't write reviews very often, especially not bad reviews, but this is the worst service experience I've ever had so I felt I had to share it. Last week 3 girlfriends and I went to the Woods to have a nice ladies night...and that's what it was for a while a lovely ladies night until the rudest bartender ever spoilt our evening. My friend, who is a very sweet southern girl and wouldn't ever hurt a fly, asked our bartender, Eugene, for another beer to which he replied very rudely, "Well you didn't tip me for the first one." Said sweet Southern girl, had been tipping this bartender all night and in fact gave him $3 for her previous $7 round. She was supposed to receive change from $10 but being the nice girl she is, she thought she'd let it slide. We explained this to the bartender, Eugene, and he basically accused us of lying. We are most certainly not liars. Anyway, this put a nasty taste in our mouths, so my other friend, a lovely girl from South Carolina, who would also never say a wrong word to anyone, asked to settle her bill. This bill came to $30...she had a $10 special and a $5 beer. She asked if it could be itemized and he replied, grinning, "We don't have the capability to itemize it, but you're pretty screwed now because I've put it on your card." Naturally, anyone would be angry at this situation, so my friend disputed this. He responded by taking all 4 of our beers, that we'd already paid for (!!!), and threw them down the sink. Clearly out of his mind, we asked for the Manager. He told us he is the Manager. We discovered this wasn't true and the real Manager came over. We explained the whole situation to him and then he went and got the bartenders version. The outcome was both bartender and manager coming over to where we were sitting at the bar and throwing $4 at us for a beer. He literally threw the $4 like a child having a tantrum. In complete and utter dismay, we all looked at each other and left the bar. We're 4 very nice, generally well-behaved girls that have never been treated in such a way before. Maybe his girlfriend had dumped him, maybe he'd had a death in the family, maybe he messaged one of us on OkCupid and we didn't reply to a message so he was pissed...still this is no way to treat 4 loyal customers. Needless to say, we will not be returning to the Woods again and I strongly advise you not to either. read more

Wednesdays, where TLC/Aly us(follow me) is cranking, the crew cuts go on the girls, and everyone is generally reigning in Queerdom. The Dj is awesome! and on summer nights you cant beat the eye candy *licks lips* . It's, up until recently, been a very welcoming & reliable good time. But this is not a lesbian/gay bar, it's a bar with a lesbian/gay night. That means people are going to wander in. The awkward moments you see or experience...men coming up asking "are You a lesbian??",them agrrssively trying to dance, snide remarks..European cologne.. I mean, obviously we're use to it if we made it this far in the game, But- we'd really rather not. Not on our night. Theres also a question with safety lately, last Wed I was followed around by a guy all night , I finally had to run away after he was looking for diff ways to sneak attack me on the floor.. He screamed "ok, I'll leave you alone nowwww!" Not encouraging. Meanwhile there was a guy picking people's coat pockets that were hung up. Someone alerted the bouncer and he was kicked out. But it seems like security is pretty lax on wed, us being a bunch of Bois and Queens. I don't agree with it. The door guy should say its gay night upon entering (that way straight men will think of penis and leave). The bouncer should be on their game. And you should go, and have fun. The Woods is my favorite place on earth. The DJ spins everything from The Jackson 5 to Dr Dre to Snoop Dog to even fucking Carly Rae Jepsen. Drink specials are legit. You will dance your ass off and have a blast. I want to be here every night of my life. No frills, nothing horrible, basically you have to deal with gross bathrooms, but like whatever. OKAY. OKAY. This is one of those bars that comes to mind when a friend from out of town is visiting Brooklyn and wants to experience Williamsburg at its "finest" and also loves to dance. That doesn't mean you wanna go. On a Friday or Saturday, this place is so crowded you can't walk from front to back without losing all your friends and wasting valuable drinking time. The bathroom line is always obnoxiously long as well. Any time i go here I find myself sitting in the backyard only so I can breathe. My MAIN issue with this place is the bartenders. I've been here at least 5 times and every time, myself or a friend of mine has had serious issues with at least one of them. They are just fucking rude. My friend ordered something, was given something else, and very politely said "oh im sorry! i ordered something different!". The flaming, bitchy bartender glared at her, and replied "I am not fucking deaf, I know you what ordered", and then refused to switch the drink. I will probably find myself in here again on a week night, or early on a weekend for some bizarre reason, but am I a fan? No. And yes, I am a Brooklyn snob. read more

This bar seems to illicit a pretty love/hate reaction out of people. Probably mostly because it transitions from dimly lit, oversized dive bar to packed dance club with the course of an hour most nights. I actually appreciate both sides of it. Come here for a whisky shot and a beer after work, chat with the friendly bartenders, and have a smoke outside in the back area. And when you have friends who come to Brooklyn and say "I just want to dance", you can take them here post 11pm and satisfy their urge to shoop or cabbage patch while not having to go to some Manhattan douche factory and pay a cover. On July 29th, my friends and I were physically assaulted at The Woods by two girls who were friends with the bartender on duty. This altercation started because one of the girls, who was drunk and clearly had been overserved, somehow misconstrued us complimenting her tattoos as an insult. In order to prevent her friends from being thrown out, the bartender falsely accused one of my friends of hitting the girls so we would be thrown out instead. Besides this being untrue, it was especially troubling because the bartenders and the two girls in question were all white and my friend is a Black man. The implications of this kind of false accusation against Black men are well-known and something like this should be completely unacceptable. We have spoken to managers from the Woods multiple times to try to remedy this situation privately--we are not asking for anything free or any kind of special treatment, but rather reassurance that something like this will not happen again. Their response has been entirely unsatisfactory. I am not calling for anyone to be fired but the bartender in question was not held accountable in any significant way, despite the fact that a manager we spoke to admitted that security camera footage from the night of the incident corroborates our version of events--that none of us put our hands on anybody (though we would've been well within our rights to defend ourselves), that these girls were the aggressors, and that the bartender explicitly lied about seeing us touch her friends. On top of all of this, a manager we spoke to on the night of the incident was not at all surprised by our complaint and noted that similar complaints have made been made against this same bartender in the past. Considering this is a reoccurring pattern and The Woods has done absolutely nothing to address the situation or take accountability, I felt it necessary to make this issue public after spending nearly a month trying to handle it privately. I have been a patron of this bar for nearly a decade, so this whole thing has been extremely disappointing and this is not something I wanted to do, but I do want to warn people who go to this bar about the type of business they're choosing to support. read more

This place is a total dump. The bear restaurant in the back is a completely separate story- they're always very kind and food is great. The woods, however, consistently has some weird bullshit new rule that only counts on certain days of the week. I've ordered food at The bear behind the woods a few times later in the evening and every single time the bouncer tries to get me to pay cover or wait in line. Didn't have my ID one time picking up food and wasn't allowed in to get it so I had to go home. The woods also has a credit card minimum on Thursday-Sunday but never a credit card minimum Monday-Wednesday (depending on the bartender). Messy. read more

I remember when I was a younger man in Brooklyn a few years ago and the woods had just opened. At the time it was the "new union pool". A few years later. Well. It's still around. Except now there is a $5 cover. Wait...what?!? That took me as a surprise. Given what the Woods is - which is... A smelly, sweaty, packed madhouse of young brooklynites getting their groove on in a too tight dance space. The crowd itself is really mixed. Mixed not as in racial demographics as the crowd is predominantly white; but mixed as in style. You'll have your expected brooklyn hipster types; yuppish ex-frat-likes; and assorted dolled up girls. I did appreciate the fully canopied back area which is quieter and less packed. Drink specials are okay. Jameson got too expensive so the $8 bud/jameson shot is now a $8 bud/tullamore dew. Still a good deal which I guess makes the cover a bit more bearable. With the limited amount of dance-y bars in the area, the woods is still the place where people tend to flock to when they want to get sweaty and close. And hook up. But maybe I'm just getting too old for this. PS. bathroom is 7-8 individual rooms located down a narrow hallway. Also they are Unisex. good luck! read more

The Woods, located not too far off the Williamsburg bridge, is a 3 part bar/dance club area. Upon arrival, you're in zone 1, their dance floor where most of the down and dirty takes place. This is the kind of space usually reserved for NYC bars - Darkly lit, grimy floors, top 40 mixes and obnoxious crowds. After you've had enough of that, probably immediately, you can go through the back to reach zone 2, the chill area. The chill area is a lit, outdoor seating part with tables and benches. This is where you go to have a conversation with your friends, probably about how crappy zone 1 was. However, there are no heat lamps here for some reason (even though they're all over inside), so coming out here during the winter is basically a no-go. After that, you're probably in need of some drinks, so you can enter the door at the back to reach zone 3, the bar. The bar is a bar. It's got your PBRs, your Bud Lights, but also your IPAs and Belgian wheats. The drinks are cheap, so get a couple of $6 beer + shot combos to get ready for reentry into zone 1. The bar also serves food, mostly of the famed "taco" genre. The only issue I had with the bar is that it's just an awkward, open space. There's no where to sit nor is there any place (other than the bar, really) to set your drinks down. If The Woods could somehow combine the best parts of each individual section into one, then you've got a real winner. Until then, you're going to find yourself moving from one section to another as you start to be annoyed by the shortcomings of each. read more

The decor is on point for me, dark and large space inside, opening up to the bright space in the back. There was only one bartender for a lot of people but he was attentive. The tap list wasn't amazing but what they had was decent and pretty cheap. And you can get food Now the reason for 2 stars. The crowd in this place isn't just bad, it is an amalgamation of all sorts of bad blended into a giant ball of what the fuck is going on. Rich 30's somethings from the city, bridge and tunnel jersey bro crowd, the occasional trying too hard Brooklyn couple. It's just WEIRD. Being born and raised in Brooklyn, and living in Greenpoint for 5 years I have to say this was by far the most comic moment I've experienced in this area. I've been to The Woods a ton of times over the past few years. There was never an issue and I always had a great time. However, this past Friday, I got there around 10:30 pm just to have some washed up old white doorman tell my friend he needs to go get a new pair of jeans and come back. I looked at his jeans, which were just your everyday regular pair of men's jeans, I looked back at the doorman and said "seriously?", and then I couldn't help but start cracking up. This happened as he let a bunch of skinny-jean wearing hipster guys in. As we walked away hysterical laughing I looked at one of the bouncers who's face pretty much said "what the f**k is this world coming to?". He's the reason I gave this place even one star. To the doorman: Reality check buddy... This is a hipster bar in Brooklyn with $5.00 PBR's where people go to relax, let loose and have fun. All different kinds of people. Which is what I always liked about it! This is not some chic city lounge with $400 a bottle table service and a dress code. My friends and I came on a Saturday night. Arrived around 10:30ish. Not too packed and no cover charge yet. Frozen margaritas were awesome, but were only made outside in the back and cash only. Food was also ordered outside. We ordered nachos which were kind of stale. Def a bunch of different beers to try out. It started to get real packed and once it did it got super hot inside. The DJ played a lot of old school, but it was mixed. Nothing to crazy. We left around 1 and there was a super long line out front. Not sure how I feel about it. I came here the other day for a long time friends birthday party. It was pretty early when I arrived. It was my first time being here so it helped that it wasn't crowded allowing me to get a feel for the place. I soon discovered that the outside patio area was cash only for drinks and food while the inside accepted credit card. I'm not one to use cash so I purchased my drinks from inside then bringing it outside to hangout with the birthday group. During the night I got hungry and went inside to get food only to discover that the only place I could order from was the cash only section. This is kind of a shitty move on the bars part. I mean yes they do have an ATM outside but credit card is king for me. Also if your going to charge cash asking $10 for a drink is crazy. Anyway I stuck to the inside area after awhile as the party moved in there. Over the night I ordered 3 drinks. I started off simple with whiskey and coke, then a sex on the beach then a Cuba libre. Normally I wouldn't be an ass and order the Cuba drink but after the failed attempt to make a sex on the beach I had to make sure the bartenders knew what they were doing. Sure enough they had no clue. I myself am an ex bartender. I worked the liquor shelves for a good 10 years so I know my shit. Bartenders not knowing how to make simple drinks is a no no for me. It shows me that the owner doesn't care. This in turn makes me not care about coming back again. (P.S.: I asked for sex on the beach which contains vodka, peach snaps, orange juice and cranberry. The bartender made 3 different drinks in an attempt to make it. I finally gave up and took the closed made one which contained pineapple. But, hey, going to places like this usually happens because you're already drunk and can't tell the difference. On another note, uncomfortable things tend to keep happening to me there. I've been going to The Woods for a few months now whenever I ended up in Williamsburg. Drinks are average and not water down thats when I drink my gin and ginger ale. They occasionally have a good deal like a Tecate and a shot for $6 or so. The place picks up usually after 11-12. There is always a DJ playing anything from Disclosure to MJ. Depending on the night they will charge you a cover. The second time i was there my MK jacket with my car keys in it were stolen. Got my keys back, jacket was gone for good. BTW their phone number doesn't work if you lose anything. Just show up. The best is that there is an indoor and outdoor bar area. There is a lot of seating if with a large group of friends and another outside bar. in the winter its equipped with heat lamps. Have evening munchies and you're not Kosher; get a bacon stick. Heaven on a stick. For REAL. Basically its just porkbelly drizzled in maple syrup. I'm not talking about Aunt Jemima syrup. All and all I always have a good time there..and pretty sure you will too! read more

MOST AGGRESSIVE DOORMAN EVER! My friend and I decided to drop in on a Tuesday night. Karaoke night was in full swing and the bar hosted a mellow mood. As we pass the front door the doorman gives us the old "HEY!", assuming that meant to check our IDs. We stumble through our wallets, I grab mine first and show it to him. He points his titanium LED pencil flashlight at my license and then GRABS my arm and YANKS it toward him for closer inspection. I calmly told him how he could have asked me to move it closer or he could have leaned in closer. He says nothing and shoots lasers at me with his eyes. (Not in the good way). We walk in, my friend makes a pit stop at the men's room while I mention the paltry act to the bartender and how we decided not to drink here because of the rudeboy at the door. She took note and assured me the manager would be informed. While I was talking to the bartender, unbeknownst to me, the doorman waves my friend to come over to him and tells him how "he doesn't like me and that he would take off his jacket and lose his job if I say something to him". (Again, not in the good way). We begin to walk out the door and I mention on the way out that I told the bartender about his hoopla and he shoos me away. My favorite time to go to the woods is a weekend afternoon. The space is well laid out, with ample room and bar service both inside and out. I come here most often for the rocking food they crank out back. Great tacos, nachos and other Mexican fare. The vibe transitions at night and it's definitely great for those that are looking to dance. I dropped by last night (Wednesday) at 9:30 for a taco and beer, but the gentleman at the door asked that I have a woman with me to go in, which is quite contrary to most spots in Williamsburg. The new Brooklyn hotspot is a crowded singles cesspool. Don't go here on a weekend and expect to get a drink quickly. It's a good after-work spot, and the outdoor patio is spacious if there isn't a lot of people around. The taco truck is delicious and cheap, so if you want a place to eat dinner cheap and have a drink, it's good for that. Friends of mine have had two terrible experiences, which have led to my bad rating. First, a friend had been buying drinks for several hours, and tipping consistently. After buying a beer without tipping, the bartenders all ganged up on him and accused him of not tipping on any of his drinks. Having been there with him, I knew they were wrong. They refused to serve him after that. The second incident happened when a friend of mine was standing next to someone that threw a beer can over his shoulder. The bouncer grabbed my friend and accused him of throwing it, and proceeded to physically throw him out of the bar without giving him a chance to explain himself. Overall, the place is nice if you go before 10 pm and sit outside. I don't have anything nice to say about the staff or the crowd at nights. read more

The mexican food stand out back is FIVE STARS. However, besides it being an unholy clusterfuck on the weekends, they do not offer any kind of happy hour specials without food involved. Also, if you leave your card they will run it for $20 even if the tab was $4. This is not an acceptable business practice. read more

I gotta go with 4 stars. And a 'jeeesus' this place is outta control. A hipster/dance club? I was skeptical as well, but everything you've heard is true. If you haven't heard of it, well, get your ass to the dance floor. They play an interesting assortment of music. But, I wouldn't say that the main attraction is the music. Haha. They have cheap drink specials, and a large backyard (it'll be nice for the summer) with a taco truck. Sounds average Willyburg, but it has a quality not found at many other bars in the hood. Mainly, those hipsters like to shake those skinny jeaned butts til 4:30am. If the Woods is a rockin', don't bother knockin'. Just go! read more

KNOW YOUR NIGHT! A lot of people give this place flack for being too crowded and having a cover. That could be a fair knock... until you factor in that this bar is open and lively other nights than the usual Friday & Saturday! Sundays are my personal favorite because there's no cover and always live music or DJs. The food from Landhaus is my favorite hangover cure in Brooklyn at the moment. Spacious bar w variety of drinks and happy hours! I went there couple of occasions, and like the vibes! Sunday evening happy hours was nice and chilled, bartenders were very friendly, there's a back yard area where you can hang on summer times and get food after couple of drinks! At night esp on weekend, this places turns into more than just a bar, there's plenty of people and room to dance the night away! read more
