The operation, just from my first experience, was like watching a well-oiled machine at work. from the check-in to cashing out, they make it super straightforward and simple. Our waiter was great about checking in unobtrusively. the owner Noam should be commended for his level of customer service & the way he makes sure staff upholds it. Sets were killer, especially Ryan Hamilton, Yamaneika Saunders, and Lucas Zelnick. website is super informative and well organized so you have an idea of whose performing at each room + have an understanding of ground rules/menu offerings/etc. the line outside could use a biiit of work // clearer or larger signs because it was a bit chaotic to navigate with so many people but was chill once we found the Reservations line. hiiiighly recommend making one, btw. This comedy club venue located in the West Village area of NYC presents some of the best comedians in the country. We made a reservation that night and then stood in line for the 10pm comedy show. We were seated at a table in the back with four other couples. It was very crowded and because we were facing sideways it was so uncomfortable to view the show. Th comedians were all very funny. A two item requirement from the menu so I had a Pellegrino sparkling water $4 and a chocolate mud pie $8. Entrance fee of $15 was in the final check. Server was very efficient. read more

We saw Shane Gillis here before his special where he talked about the George Washington tour during covid! We also saw that one gay dude with nice hair, eyebrows, and Italian looking with like a gay Joyzy accent.He was funny too. The seating is like a rectangular view with bunch of single tables lined up in the middle splitting the layout in half. and on towards the stage. there's like club booths and chairs and shit. Layout was cool. The comedians actually come from the back and walk thru the crowd, which I thought was cool. Drinks weren't too bad nor not priced crazy. Just go there, get a cool buzz, sober up with fried shit, get prepared to be CALLED out, and take it like a champ. It's COMEDY BABY! read more

The club itself is very spacious while still seating a lot of people inside. Many comedy clubs that I have been to have horrible cocktails but not this one. What a great experience- no joke. This is a great venue for showcase comedy instead of a headliner. Sure, sometimes you want the whole box of Lucky Charms, but sometimes the variety pack is great, even though for every five you will get the Corn Flakes or 100% Bran. I don't advise going to any show late (I normally get to shows when doors open), but we had a very good reason to get there 14 minutes before show time. OK, not really, we lost track of time watching "Love on the Spectrum". But we somehow got to the club, got into an intimidatingly long line (with dreaded breaks at driveways allowing a-wipes to cut), and still got a great seat. We shared an area, but we weren't touching knees like most Improvs I've attended. Service was great- you're lucky if you get Lars as your server. I saw him dealing with some rude people and he was always super nice. Speaking of rude people, some Australians up front kept talking, and they got booted. G'day! The talent was great. I was excited to see Jeff Arcuri who is great at crowd work. The others made me laugh. None of them made me cringe, even with an uneven crowd with weird energy. I just love the Comedy Cellar and made reservations for me and my 3 adult children on a late Sunday evening when we visited NYC in June. I normally go to the MacDougal location but they didn't have any available reservations - it was our luckiest day EVER though! They do warn you that you never know who will show up and we hit the jackpot of a lifetime! The headliner cut their show short to allow the special drop in guests the opportunity to come up....at this location, we were entertained by Chris Rock AND Dave Chappelle!!!!!! Jon Hamm must have been out for the night with them because he was there and brought them their drinks! Dave didn't want to leave the stage and our 10pm show ended way way past midnight! What a once in a lifetime experience! You just never know who will show up! read more

This Comedy Cellar location is laid out much better than the original McDougal location. It's not as narrow, more deep, so more people can see the stage better. It also has a guy on keyboard and a guy on drums which is a very nice touch. The show went smoothly and the MC was good. There were about 6 comics for the 90 minute show. After the show they were forcefully pushing us out to get ready for the next show. The food here is pretty good. I had the wings with the homemade potato chips and they were very tasty. The drinks were good too. There is a two drink/food minimum so be aware of that. read more

This was my second time at comedy cellar! I've been to the Macdougal location first and I lowkey like this venue more? Macdougal is the classic one thats always in movies/tv shows, and houses the big acts in general. But I like that this location is intimate yet a lot more space and it's not super cramped like MacDougal. The drinks and fries here are good and the comedians were outstanding. At some points, I was laughing so hard that I couldn't breathe. I came here with my friends who were visiting from out of town and they absolutely loved it! read more

The Village Underground is an extension of the famous Comedy Cellar (where Jerry Seinfeld, Chris Rock, Kevin Hart etc. have been known to make impromptu appearances to try new material). I went to the 10 PM show. I asked the door people the best time to come back, was told around 9:20. I was returned at 9:20 and was given a manilla envelope that said, "1/40" and told to come back in about another 20 minutes. This was apparently my seat assignment. As a single, I was sat in a chair that was part of a booth-like setup with two couples. It wasn't weird at all, seriously, and everyone just minded their business and watched the show. At first, filing us into the club seemed chaotic, but it went fast and I quickly figured out the process. There doesn't seem to be a bad seat in the house. Intimate, but didn't seem crowded. Comedy Cellar and the associated venues use a showcase format, which is what makes them unique. You see around five or six comics in 10-15 minute blocks. Most of the comics brought some laughs. I mainly went to see Greer Barnes, who has been around a long time and doesn't get the credit he deserves (Netflix, get this man a special!). Overall, I chuckled a lot and laughed out loud at Greer. Pretty decent comics. There is a two drink minimum, it can be bottled water, apps, alcohol, soda. Cover varies. I went on a Tuesday so it was 14 bucks. On busy nights/weekends, it is usually 24 or 25 dollars. The drinks are fine. But you're not here for craft cocktails. This is a fun experience. I plan to go again, not only to see Greer Barnes again, but see some of the other comedians at some of the other venues. Staff was nice and helpful. Door people were welcoming and knew what they were doing. Very affordable night of levity in the east/west village. read more

Updating my last review: there used to be a line on their website that made me think you HAD to order an alcoholic drink (something like "food MUST be ordered with a drink"), but I think I may have misunderstood it. Any 2 items on the menu will satisfy their purchase requirement. Food is good -- I recommend the house chips -- and most of the performers are fantastic. A note: the cover charge is included on the receipt, but I think the tip should only factor in the food items. Keep an eye out for that. read more

First time here since we usually go to the original Comedy Cellar. We've been going to the OG for a very long time and I was a little worried this wouldn't be as good. But just as it is in proximity it's pretty close to what we are use too! Your typical NY standup show, with a great line up and a two drink min. They run like a well oiled machine where the wait staff knows when to come around for drink and when to sit tight when the performers are on. Checking in was fairly simple, but you are required to put your phones/any smart devices (even my Fitbit watch) is sealed up in an envelope. I'm totally ok with this because it forced me even more to focus on the show. Perfect for a date night, or going out with friends. We will be back to either location. Support your local comedy scene. Overall, we had a great experience that seems luckier than what others have had. Maybe it was a pre-Covid experience during our lovely pandemic times? Who's to say. We made a semi-last minute decision/reservation to see a show with a comedian my fiancé was familiar with - Dave Attell. It was for a 10pm Saturday night show so we had dinner nearby and walked right over. When we got there, the line was decently long but after a short pause, we were moving. Apparently you had to check-in prior (we were not aware) so you could get a bag to put your phone in. The doorman didn't give us a hard time at all. We checked in very quickly and walked right in. The space is definitely crammed and we were sitting right in front of the piano and next to the drum set. I thought it'd be annoying, but the only thing that bothered was the very rude neighbor I had. The show was very interactive and there were a few well-known and many new comedians. We absolutely loved it. We even got a surprise stand up from Aziz Ansari! He was awesome and hilarious. My main and only complaint is the wait staff and drink selection. Apparently they offer beers but they don't make that evident so you can pay $15-20 a drink instead. There's a two drink minimum so we found that to be absolutely outrageous. Why can't anyone go to a show anymore as a non-drinker? Horrible policy, honestly. It's not like tickets are cheap or free. The two hour night cost us almost $200 with tip. We tipped our waitress fairly, even though she brought our drinks late and also brought the wrong drink. You can't correct them on that because they flee immediately and you don't want to disrupt the show of course. I did like putting my phone away though to be honest. It was nice to be present somewhere. If we go again, we'll remember to order beer instead. read more

Been enjoying comedy at VU and Comedy Cellar for nearly a decade, with it being a staple stop whenever friends were in town visiting. Unfortunately, we had a horrible experience with the door staff last night. We had a reservation for the 10pm and the doormen pulled us out of line because one person in our party had his vax card as a screenshot on his Lock Screen. It was clearly present and available, alongside his ID, but they arbitrarily pulled us out of line and then made us get back in line. Then once we returned to the front they said that we would not be able to enter. No reason was provided when asked politely. I've spent a lot of money here over the years and the rude doormen and lady is just something you dealt with, knowing that it would be enjoyable once you get downstairs. Last night was the last time I will be spending time and money at VU for a while. There are so many other establishments that will treat patrons with respect. My friends and I will be skipping Village Underground until things change and encourage others to do so as well. read more

I've been to the Comedy Cellar twice at this particular venue. I've heard this was the best venue just because it is more room and space than the original Comedy Cellar. Most likely your going to get seated with strangers since it's communal tables but that's not really a bad thing depending on how talkative your table mates are lol You must reserve your tickets in advance. If you come like 30-45mins before you will check-in with the host and most likely get better seats at the front or second row depending on how nice the host is. Your night will depend on the comedy acts, first time I went I had a better time because it had better acts. On my recent recent times I didn't think the acts was as funny as last time. The pineapple vodka here is good as well as the fries. Pro-tip, come here during the weekday for a cheaper experience. Also you don't have to buy 2 drink minimum. My friend picked out this place and I am always up for a night of laughter. We went to the early show and when we got there there was a good sized line outside. They run the line like a nightclub. Have it lined up, hold it, and when people are walking by they may inquire whats going on since a busy place is where some people like to be. It was quite unnecessary to be honest. So, we stood in line listening to the various conversations around us, in a very chilly evening in nyc. Once the line started moving and you are approaching the front, make sure you have your ID and Vaccination card ready to show them. The other caveat, is that when you arrive, be prepared to turn off your phone or put it in silent mode. They hand you a bag, put the phones in the bag and then hand it to you and it indicates to the host seating you where you will be seating. It may have been a night where they were suspecting someone very popular to come by, which has happened as the website suggests. Or, this is standard operating procedure. In either case, be prepared. Once you get down to the steps, the place is very small. We were sat in a corner which was fine. Unfortunately, all were sat so tight that they should have had people sitting on laps. I had to get up often for people to get around, or by since it was so cramped. This wasn't just for us, it was everyone in the room. The comedy show in itself was pretty entertaining. Other than one comic who didn't fare well, everyone else did a nice job. Colin Quinn from SNL and MTV days was there. I keep seeing bad service on reviews. Our waitress was great, but could tell was overwhelmed with how many tables she had. Still did a great job. For me, this was a one and done visit. read more

I love comedy clubs so I already have a positive bias. I have always wanted to catch a show at the Comedy Cellar the many times I've been to NYC, but never had a chance. On this last trip, I was late in booking a reservation for Sat night, and although they said you can try to get in without a reservation, I didn't want to risk it. So booked the Sunday 10pm show at Village Underground. Got there at 9.50pm, got in a short line designated for reservations. IDs checked. Reservation checked by man in front, given a small mailer pouch to seal phones and Apple Watch (no photos and videos taking allowed). Wrote a table number on our pouch. Walked downstairs where someone greeted us and quickly sat us at our table, direct view to middle of stage. Seated at a table with two other couples. 2 item/drink minimum + $17 per person. Wait staff nice and efficient. Last call, closed out our tab before the last act. There is MC and 6 acts - MC and 2 acts were super funny. Others were pretty good. Had a great time, great experience. Left with lots of energy, smiling, with my tummy hurting a bit from the laughs. read more

His whole routine is: telling shitty jokes that constantly bomb and when one or two people make an awkward chuckle he says some shit like thank you "so and so". He then insults the audiences sense of humor when it's precisely audience's sense of humor which is what's keeping us from laughing at his shitty jokes. read more

Got to the venue early around 10:45pm after a broadway play for an 11:55pm comedy show that we had an online reservation for. They told us to come back at 11:15am to check in. At that point we went back and they asked us if we minded the front row. We said, we're okay with that. They gave us a sealable envelope for our cell phones and told us to come back at 11:45pm. About 11:40pm we can back and lined up outside. Our cell phone bag had a number on it and when we started heading into the venue at midnight we ended up getting front row seats. When we sat the service was great as we ordered a couple of beers and some chips. Through the night the server came to check on us and got a couple more beers. Front to back the show was hysterical. The comedians were sooo funny that I'll definitely look to get back there next time I am in town. read more

Highly recommend - we had a great time here! I came with a friend on Thursday night while visiting the city. We loved our experience but I gave a minus 1 star for the food service and the process for getting a ticket. If you don't have a ticket reserved, you should get to the show at least 30-45 minutes before the show time. You'll be asked to put your name on a waiting list and after the no-shows, they will start to call out names -- I haven't felt that much anxiety in awhile! We also got seated in a booth with 8 other random people. The staff was nice, but our server kept forgetting things. For example, our fries came out an hour after the show started and she forgot to bring my water each time. Overall, I'm happy we waited an hour for tickets and I would definitely come back next time I'm in NYC - hopefully with reserved tickets this time :)! read more

I was so excited to see comedy in NYC! The best thing about visiting a big city is the abundance of comedy available on so many nights of the week! I was also super excited for the possibility of a big name comedian stopping in and we got to see Colin Quinn, so I wasn't disappointed! The logistics of The Village Underground were pretty similar to those of shows in other cities. We made a reservation and then got there early to get in line. They gave us a plastic envelope to seal our phones in, so we wouldn't record the artists. We were seated at a shared table with some rude people, but that definitely wasn't the venue's fault. I understand that smaller parties are likely going to be sitting with strangers. Also the two item minimum is standard everywhere. I think we saw six comedians, not counting the opener (who was amazing, by the way!). I so enjoyed seeing a variety of people and trying to figure out what they might be preparing for. In general, a great experience that I'm glad we had on our trip to NYC! read more

Absolutely worst stand up acts on August 7, 6pm show. Not funny, racist material, and two stand ups kept saying if we didn't laugh or like their material we we stupid, dumb, or go f yourself. We had to show our Covid vaccination card and ID. Then seal our phones in bag. Lead to our seats in a booth and squeezed in with a total of 8 people. Exactly like sardines. Awful.
