This place is better than having your own home guy. The yard is very well maintained, always spotless and offers an entire "pod" or section of the gym to yourself. Each pod has a bench, squat rack, about 300 pounds worth of plates, dumbbells and a cardio machine. The downstairs pod also includes the assault bike and a rower. No sharing required! You have your pod all to yourself for your hour long reservation, so you don't have to share or wait for anyone else to finish with equipment. Each pod reservation also gives you access to the indoor, and the outdoor turf area and the cable machine (these are the only shared pieces of equipment). There's also towel service and three bathrooms and some have showers. I love this place because the equipment is very well maintained, you have your entire area to yourself and the owner is very kind and considerate. I like knowing I don't have to wait to use the squat rack or worrying about someone watching me while I workout. My boyfriend loves this place because he isn't as into lifting as me and likes that there's no pressure for someone who doesn't know what their doing to move out of the way for other gym goers. They are also doing a first month free so there's literally no reason not to try them out.

For everyone looking to escape San Francisco, there's now a few more reasons to stay. I came across an Instagram story for The Yard, and it's exactly what I've been looking for since I moved and sold my home gym. They have a number of semi-private and open space "pods". The pod I worked out in had a half rack with standard barbell, 2x 45-35-25-10-5-2.5 plates, Powerblocks, air bike, rower, and bands. There are also a few functional trainers, power towers, kettlebell sets, and two turf areas (indoor and outdoor) - the perfect setup for powerlifting, functional training, and general strength training. I believe they prioritize access for certified trainers and their students, but also accept individual members - I was able to get in a great workout. Joe and Kelsey are superb - highly recommend checking this place out if you are serious about your workouts.

The Yard is a freaking awesome gym! This place has a friendly owner and a welcoming atmosphere. It has a very unique concept where individuals can book their own workout stations (aka pods) and have the space to themselves the entire time. There are multiple pods and each pod is equipped with at least a squat rack, rowing, and biking machine. There are two turf areas where one can perform tire flips, TRX, power sled, battle ropes, etc. They also have knowledgeable, certified personal trainers that offer individual or group lessons. It doesn't matter if you are an early bird or get off work late because the hours are accommodating. I love this place!

He's also a dog lover and took great care of my dog while I worked out. Even gave him some treats which was super sweet of him!! I was initially worried I might not have access to the same equipment I had at other locations due to the smaller space but that wasn't an issue at all!! I had never tried them before and he walked me through putting them on. Highly recommend this gym and am grateful for Ryan!

About two months ago, I joined SF Fitness because it's the only gym in my area with a swimming…read morepool. Even though the membership costs over $100 per month, and I knew I would only be able to use it a few times each month due to my schedule, I decided it was still worth joining so I could swim. Overall, I would rate the facility about 2.5 out of 5 stars. The staff does make an effort to keep the gym clean, but because it gets so busy, some areas can still be messy at times. The main reason I joined was for the swimming pool. Unfortunately, I found that the pool is almost always crowded. I tried visiting on different days and at different times, but most of the time all the lanes were occupied. Occasionally I could swim right away, but more often I had to wait anywhere from 5 to 20 minutes before a lane became available. However, the biggest reason I'm giving this gym only 2 stars has nothing to do with the pool--it's because of security and parking. My primary transportation is an electric scooter. I initially tried driving and parking in the garage, but I repeatedly experienced problems with the parking gate. On several occasions it took me 10-15 minutes just to leave because the security gate malfunctioned and someone from the Fillmore Center had to come reset it. It was frustrating, especially when I was in a hurry. Because of that, I started riding my electric scooter instead. I used it only three times. On my third visit, I locked my brand-new scooter with a $60 security lock to the bike rack directly in front of the main entrance, where people are constantly walking in and out. After my swim, I came back and my scooter was gone. I immediately reported the theft to the front desk. They told me they were not responsible and that I needed to contact Fillmore Center Security. When I contacted them, they said they first needed a police report before they could assist me. I went to the police station, filed a report, and returned with the paperwork. I then asked what they could do to help. They said they would review the security camera footage to try to identify the person who stole my scooter. Since it happened right at the main entrance, I believed the cameras would clearly capture the incident. I was then told to come back the next day to speak with the security manager, Sean. Unfortunately, he wasn't available. After several unsuccessful attempts, I finally obtained his direct phone number from the security department. I texted Sean multiple times explaining that my insurance company could not process my claim without the surveillance footage. He repeatedly told me he would send the footage to my insurance company. Days turned into weeks, and weeks turned into months. Despite his assurances, my insurance company never received anything. Eventually, my messages went unanswered. This was extremely disappointing because obtaining the footage should have been straightforward if the security cameras were functioning properly. Without that evidence, I couldn't complete my insurance claim for my stolen scooter. At that point, I decided to cancel my membership. Because of my busy schedule, my scooter is my primary way of getting to the gym. If I don't feel confident that it will be safe--or that I'll receive meaningful assistance if something happens--it's simply not worth the risk. After reading other online reviews, I realized I wasn't the only person who had experienced security-related issues at this location. That was even more discouraging. I'm not writing this review to discourage everyone from joining SF Fitness. If you walk to the gym or have another reliable way to get there, you may have a completely different experience. My purpose is simply to warn those who rely on electric scooters or bicycles as their primary transportation. Be aware of the potential risks, and understand that if your property is stolen, you may find it difficult to get the assistance or documentation needed afterward. I genuinely hope my experience helps others make an informed decision before joining.

That's when I came across the Sunset Gym this past December. I started my membership with a week long pass and eventually converted it to a monthly membership. (The payment for the week pass went into my first month of membership) Pricing wise this place is a very reasonable compared to the bigger chains (i.e Fitness SF), but admittedly you are also restricted to one location. For me though, that's not a problem as I wanted a neighborhood gym more than anything. The gym itself is great - it's old school (think OG Gold's Gym style). Downstairs has plenty of free weights and a good selection of machines. Upstairs has a dedicated Cardio area, a spot for stretching, as well as additional free-weights and an outdoor area. Staff I've interacted with so far have been wonderful. Very glad to have found a great gym close by to where I live

I contacted Fitness SF to get a membership and information on a trainer that specialized in getting back to it after an injury. After I signed up they assigned Albert as my trainer. Albert from day one explained the approach he would take to help build me back up after this injury. Albert put together a good plan that we have stuck to for the past few months. The results speak for themselves after training with him for almost three months now. He helped me tidy up my diet as well and I have gained 5lbs of muscle and lost 3lbs of fat. I've been to the Transbay and Castro locations and am excited to see what they have in store for Polk. I have a friend that likes to swim at their Fillmore location as well. I adore the dog room they have at SOMA and it always brightens my day seeing the cute furry faces. I feel like this gym is a lil pricey without the special, with the special I have its about $100/month, on their website it's $135ish rn. The most I've paid in the city was $125 and that was a family owned small business. I wouldn't pay $135 tbh. I do appreciate that there are multiple locations you can go to and experience tho. SOMA is my go to as it has the most equipment and free weights and is closer to me. Trans bay does feel a lot cleaner and newer but also I feel like I'm walking up and down a lot and the flow of the machines isn't as good imo. Castro is pretty tiny ngl but they can't really control that. During busy times the wait for machines isn't too long and there's more duplicates of equipment compared to the other locations I've been to. Plenty of squat racks on both sides of the gym with platforms which is really nice and 3 different areas with free weights. They provide chalk which has helped me with my lifts and grip strength goals. I do think the locker rooms for the women could be modernized a little more like transbay but it's good for what it is tbh as they provide feminine products and hair dryers. I do want to try the sauna and massage chairs. I've also used the InBody scanner and theraguns. The SOMA location also has ample parking nearby that isn't paid parking so that's nice too and also a Lyft bike stop. I have had a friend who's light was stolen outside tho so I would be mindful if you're biking here. Overall, would recommend if it's in your budget and you are nearby. Random but I loved how they decorated it during Pride wish it was like that all year lmao Anyways I will say I agree with the other reviewers about BO but it's a gym and ppl get musty/musky, you might smell some B.O. occasionally but it's temporary and then you end your workout seeing an adorable doggo so then you forget lolll

I sometimes only have time to go after work, when there is a huge line!! Multiple weight machines are all broken and old as well upstairs. Tons of people came for the basketball courts, which they closed down! The same machines were broken for so long that I complained to the front desk. They told me that they "put in multiple requests, but it takes weeks for the repairmen to come. Once they do, there are new machines that break after the broken ones have been fixed." Why would it take weeks to repair machines, just to have them break over and over and over? I've never seen this many broken machines at any other gym. The workers also yell at us to get out once we get close to closing time. A few times I was changing in the bathroom, and someone told me over and over again that the gym was closed and to get out. Should I just run out naked? I've heard them yell over the intercom, and make unprofessional "gen z" noises and screeches. There is one of each of the weight machines so the wait times can be pretty long any part of the day. They could repurpose some of the open mat area, which is unnecessarily large in comparison to the area dedicated to the machines. Group fitness classes: 3.5 stars: they have a lot of good classes. There is not enough variety, as other reviews noted. I remember when they had tons of Pilates mat classes. Now they focus mostly on Zumba, which is wonderful...we need more strength training (like Pilates or such). Spa and pool facilities: 2.5 stars. The women's locker room is well maintained, and is the main reason why we continue to choose this gym. They recently installed some very temperamental locks in the women's locker rooms, and the numbers on the locks are super small to read...seems like an ADA issue; As it is, the housekeeping staff needs to help with lock-outs all day. (And they still keep the place sparkling clean! Hence five stars in the first category above.) The women's steam room is offline chronically due to repair issues. And so women who use the pool need to walk, dripping with cold pool water, through a lounge/lobby area while the steam room is under construction. These conditions have been true for over two months now. And there is no good timeline for when the steam room and direct access to the pool area will be restored. The steam room was under construction in 2025, too. Security team is incredible. Bottom line: if housekeeping and security could run the whole place, this would be a five-star review; If you need to get through your workout efficiently, and don't want to wait in line for a shoulder press or leg press, maybe check another gym with more than one of each type of machine. If you want daily cardio-type fitness classes, and don't need machines or weight lifting work, this gym is a good option. Just don't bring a bag that you need to stow in a locker to avoid the hassle of getting locked out! (Bags of any kind are prohibited on the gym floor.) We have been members for a long time, and so we have a reasonable rate. I would not pay the current prices, however, as it feels like too much for what they currently offer. Hope this helps you decide on the best gym for your needs!

While I was doing the deadlifts -- I don't do often -- I'm thankful to Angela for the adjustments that made me feel it more on my lats and I liked the feeling of an engaged back.
