As an experienced Crossfit athlete for over 6 years, my expectations for a Crossfit place are high, and Crossfit Golden Gate has met all of them. From well thought out workouts to an amazing community that has given close friends. The facilities are clean and the coaches are experienced. Thanks Crossfit Golden Gate :)

Whenever I'm out of town I always look for a great CrossFit gym. I have high hopes but they are not always fulfilled. I was jogging down the streets in San Francisco and I found CrossFit Golden Gate. I walked in and the members were super nice as was the owner Danielle. I was able to do open gym and get some coaching tips. I followed up for the next three days every morning in CrossFit Golden in Gate I felt like I've been going there for years. This is such a great spot in San Francisco it's got a lot of space and plenty of Olympic equipment and awesome programming! There is even a cool dog named Bruno. I can't wait to go back thanks so much! My abs are rocking from those push press!

I've been to my share of Crossfit gyms in SF and beyond (SD, Cartagena, etc). Like finding the ever elusive long-term partner or pair of jeans that perk up your butt, It took me 2 other stints with other Crossfit gyms until I found "the one". I started Crossfit when I moved to the city 5 years ago, but it wasn't until I joined CFGG almost 3 years ago that I could really commit (kind of like finding the right boyfriend, am I right?). For the uninitiated, all Crossfit gyms might look the same...heavy weights, a super ripped coach, and folks who are sweating a lot. BUT, dig a little deeper and you'll quickly see who rises to the top and who sinks to the bottom. How do I know this is the right gym for me? It's not a matter of convenience. My love affair with CFGG was tested when they moved from literally across the street from my house to a 15 minute drive away. But, I'm committed to this affair and distance won't stop me! CFGG, how do I love thee? Let me count the ways: Coaching: Danielle, Victor, and Dan are detail oriented and experienced. They'll call me out if I reach below parallel on squats or if my form is breaking during a WOD. How many coaches will threaten to strip your weight during a WOD because you're breaking form? Not many...in fact many gyms will probably just scream at you to go faster. Coaches treat you with respect and not a tub of lard. Let them know what your goals are and they'll push you to get there, but make sure you have the proper technique to do so. Programming: No watered down programming here (100 double-unders for time, is this a joke, [old gym]?). Workouts always have a strength portion and a more traditional workout of the day. Everything is scalable to your ability, so don't be intimidated. Not ready for Crossfit? CFGG has Bootyfit, which is a scaled version of Crossfit using lighter weights. Community: Can't stress this enough, but CFGG has THE BEST community I've been a part of. People are super supportive and friendly. I think the best part about CFGG is that people are normal folks who are interested in a healthy lifestyle. No paleo version of slut-shaming if you're not 100% paleo/whole 30/gluten free. I don't feel ashamed or embarrassed if I have an off day or week because, hey! my coach also has a weird obsession with macarons, so let's move on and see how we can get back on track together. Love the group of girls here who are strong, supportive, and hilarious. Note for the ladies: I have a ton of friends who hear me talking about Crossfit and are all worried about "getting bulky". I hear you, but since I started CFGG a few years ago, I gained around 8 pounds and rest assured it's not fat. I look and feel better than I have ever before (and I used to figure skate competitively) and I don't think anyone would use "bulky" to describe my build. No more flat pancake Asian ass for me, just solid buns of steel. Whether you're looking to get bikini ready or switch up to a healthy lifestyle, Crossfit Golden Gate is for you!

They make it easy to go to a class as you don't have to sign up for a class prior to attending. You can just show up and they can accommodate you. The only thing is that they make you purchase their shirt as part of their "uniform" policy if you go and are there for their Groupon. When one of them found a Groupon for Empower: 5 group kickboxing classes for $19 (according to Groupon, originally $200), we decided to go for it. Our first class was on Wednesday, August 10th at 5:30pm. Johnny taught our class and he was awesome! Would make sure our technique was correct without making us feel like we were doing it completely wrong. Great in a class atmosphere if you get a little shy in group classes. We started off with jumping jacks as part of our warm up. Then we paired up and he taught us boxing combos. We would take turns punching and blocking/receiving. Great way to get out aggression. Most of the class was spend doing this. Then we went into their version of burpees, running in place, and some kind of crab/bear/spider crawl. When I was giving up during my crawl, Johnny kept cheering me on. We ended with crunches (which luckily for me, weren't too bad) and of course high fives to finish up the class. This isn't in the fine print for the Groupon, but it's only valid for their Monday or Wednesday class at 5:30pm, so keep that in mind before purchasing. For those who get off at 5:30pm or later, I wouldn't suggest getting this as you can't apply it to any other classes. Great first class. I haven't worked out in over a year, so it was nice breaking a sweat and punching out some pented frustration. Looking forward to my second class!

I used to run competitively outdoors, so running inside on a treadmill doesn't hit the same. Still I gave it a chance and am quite glad I did. I joined for a 9:30 AM Saturday full body upper body focus class, and it was super energizing. With rapid spring and strength sets synced to a pulsing, high-octane playlist, the workout started my weekend on a high note. Aside from the workout, what facilities I saw and used were clean and odor-free. Staff were polite but a bit rushed. The layout of the room the class I took was held in was a bit confusing to navigate in the dim lighting. They do have a reference map at the check-in desk, so it's definitely a good idea to arrive early and review it first if it's your first time here.

Great location accessible via public transit and bikes (though I walked--not from my office, but it is very accessible from people's offices!) Nice locker rooms but small. I like the soap they offer! Lockers are easy to use.

I have been to Bay Breakers a few times already and have had a great experience each time. Beginner class: I love that they offer free glove rentals for the beginner classes, which is perfect if you're just starting out and don't know yet if you want to commit to purchasing your own gloves/equipment. In Daniel's classes, he always starts with a jump rope warmup (a great workout on its own IMO, even though it's only for a few minutes) and walks the class through the numbered punches before working on some combos together. I have taken some other boxing classes around SF which tend to be more fitness-oriented (like Rumble?), and this class was a bit different since it was more focused on stance and technique, which I really appreciated to help build familiarity and confidence. Gym: My understanding is the gym is still getting up and running, so some of the areas are still unfinished (e.g., one of the restrooms). That being said, the main gym/workout areas are all good to go (as far as I can tell). There are cubbies at the back of the gym which feel safe since they're far away from the main door on Van Ness, curtained off changing areas, restrooms, showers, etc. Location: It's on Van Ness which is relatively easy to get to. There's a MUNI bus stop right outside, and a few other routes around the nearby intersections. With my current schedule, I'm unable to come to Bay Breakers as often as I'd prefer, but I always enjoy the experience here and look forward to coming more often in the future hopefully.
