I was told by a friend that this was a good place to eat. I would disagree. The she crab "bisque" was just a watery mess. It has real crab meat in it but was not a bisque. $11 for watery bisque. I got the Greek lamb burger and asked for it medium rare. The server gave me a weird look and wasn't sure that it could be served that way. Its LAMB!! Why on earth would I want well done lamb?!? It was a thin patty of meat with a ton of cucumbers and feta cheese piled on top. The bun was just to small to hold that amount of stuff. The burger was half well done and raw. At $23, I felt a little cheated. The burger comes with a huge bowl of rosemary french fries. They quite tasty but disappointed that the fries were a frozen product. The server was to busy talking to the hostess and he didn't even bother to ask me for another round. If you are interested in over priced and sub par food, this place is for you. It seems to me to be way over priced for what you get. $45.00 for one meal seems a bit high to me. My 17 yo. son has also claimed he has found the food less than a repeat experience. My husband and I just picked up a few cookies for dessert from this place and we're definitely fans! The staff was extremely friendly and helpful and the cookies are monsters and are absolutely delicoius. They have some interesting sounding drinks I want to go back and try too! The only thing that kept them from getting a full on 5 stars from me were the prices of the cupcakes and bars which was around $8. Durango, Colorado- I couldn't pass up this adorable shop, especially when a quick peek in the window revealed an assortment of beautifully decorated cupcakes. My selection was made quite easy since there was only one vegan option (bummer!) but wow, was it a little piece of heaven. The vegan carrot cupcake had a perfect mountain of white frosting sprinkled with a shimmer of glitter and topped with a lime green candy. It was wrapped gently in carrot paper and placed into a small white perfect-for-it's-size carrying box. I went next door to join my fiancé for coffee and saw this as the perfect opportunity to sample my find. First stop- a swipe of the finger across the frosting. Oooooo my my. Sweet decadence. Slightly marshmallowy and entirely fluffy, this was a delight. The cupcake was entirely moist and in my first bite I got a taste of carrot, raisin, and nut- a delectable combination. Each bite that I savored was a surprise. I didn't know which flavors I would capture. The next five minutes were like a surprise party and when it was over I felt like somebody had popped all of my balloons and said, "party over." I think I'll party again tomorrow. It was my first time in Durango and I walked in on a hunch thinking I could get good food and drinks here . Boy was I blown away!!!! From the drinks , to the service , and the welcoming smiles , this place had it all!!! I was greeted by a wonderful girl named Cara who just had the best vibe I could ask for, for never meeting her. I felt like we had been friends forever. Then I got a drink from the bar where I meet this guy Mark I believe his name was? Who just made me the best drinks I could ask for!! I had a burger that was so juicy and flavorful I couldn't believe I never had heard about this place before and a "yellow drink" and Carajillo to wash it all down. The Yellow Carrot is one of my favorite places (period), and I say this having lived, traveled, and eaten all over the world. The food is so delicious that I bribe people to ship / bring it to me in SF (I really recommend the Bomb Bar ... worth carrying back on a plane and explaining to the TSA). The prices may be a little higher than the Durango norm - but the flavor, the quality of the ingredients, the pure adventure / creativeness is worth every penny. I'm willing to pay more for a sandwich or cupcake (really, more of just a cake) because I know the flavors will be intense, innovative, and over-the-top (in a good way). read more

Usually as a vegetarian I feel short-handed in a boxed lunch but the sandwich with roasted red pepper pimento cheese on a brioche bun spread with pesto was amazing...not to mention the homemade sweet potato fries...yum. Last fall, my wife and I booked Yellow Carrot to cater our wedding in Durango, out at Blue Lake Ranch. The experience we had with them completely exceeded our expectations beyond description. Sari and her crew MADE our wedding and I would strongly urge anyone that's hosting an event in the area to use them if you want it to be fantastic. We actually ended up using YC for more than just catering services. They took care of set-up/break-down & clean up, flowers, table cloths, lighting, extra furniture, general decorating, even bartending! Sari was the reason that we didn't need a wedding planner. She provided one-stop shopping for the event and helped us avoid a mountain of hassle if we had contracted all that stuff individually. We had a quick meeting and tasting with her about a year before the wedding, picked out what we wanted, and pretty much let her run with it. We had our ceremony outside of the event center so were able to walk through the reception area right when we got there to see how it looked. Even though the bride had a good idea of what the set-up would be, she was still brought to tears as she saw it all for the first time. She was just overwhelmed by how beautiful it all looked. The style and presentation of the room was very classy but laid back and had a vintage vibe to it that fit perfectly with the country setting. The service started with a pre-ceremony cocktail made of Sari's famous basil limeade and champagne, a funky and truly one-of-a-kind drink that's refreshing and delicious. The bar was opened just after the ceremony and plated apps were distributed by the YC staff. There was also an outdoor station set up with popcorn and beet chips (another YC original, very addictive) for snacking before dinner. Dinner service consisted of 3 different food stations, each very well presented with its own theme. We had chosen sliders, fajitas / nachos, and mac 'n cheese. This was a tough choice as they offer you extensive choices from a big menu beforehand. I had a bit of everything and it was all really great though the mac 'n cheese station was probably the star of the show. You picked whatever you wanted from of a huge selection of toppings that were blended in to your serving by the staff and our guests went CRAZY for it. In fact, we had more than one person tell us (beyond the point of politeness) that it was the best food they'd ever had, let alone at a wedding! A decadent dessert station came next with a big selection of awesome goodies: pecan pie cookies, brownies, mousse, cupcakes, and more. The bar and dance floor stayed busy the rest of the night and everyone had a great time. We were able to leave at the end of the night worry-free knowing YC would take care of everything. We did stop by the store the next day just to settle up with YC and deal with the leftover alcohol that we had provided. Sari even took care of getting us refunded for the unopened bottles from the local store we had bought it all from (Liquor World, which was awesome too, separate review), saving us another trip! Billing was very straight-forward and transparent. Everything was clearly itemized so there was never a question of where our costs were coming from. Everyone we dealt with at YC was extremely responsive to us throughout the entire process and whatever we paid was not enough! Overall, they went the extra mile from start to finish and we highly, highly recommend them. read more

I usually only come here for the sandwiches, specifically the Smokin' Salmon which is incredible. As for their other sandwiches I've only had their pulled pork and it wasn't very good. Their cupcakes are usually rock hard 9 out of 10 times and their weird basil lemonade is interesting but quickly turns to disgusting after the first few sips. I've never had their pricey mac and cheese, though. And they've got a lot of different topping options. Overall decent place for what it is but it's pretty overpriced for their C+ food. read more

My husband and I needed a backup plan for our wedding cake as our original plan fell through last minute. Our fault for not tasting it ahead of time, but we live out of state and weren't able to get back to Durango until a couple days before the wedding. The Yellow Carrot had great reviews so we thought it was a safe choice. We ordered the white chocolate raspberry cake and requested the style be simple and rustic. A picture was provided and we were told it would be easy for them to accomplish. Our cake turned out very sloppy and had a strong artificial raspberry liqueur flavor. I tried two bites but couldn't eat it. We ended up throwing away more than half of the cake that cost us hundreds of dollars. read more

My Husband and I used the Yellow Carrot as our caterers for our wedding, and honestly everything they were in charge of was a complete disaster and I am still upset by how they ruined our wedding. They were taking care of our flowers, bar, food, and servers. The flowers we wanted were very simple, sunflowers and baby's breath. That's it. They used some other flowers without ever telling me beforehand that they couldn't get the flowers I wanted, although they could have gone to the local grocery store to buy them. I had my husband wear these awesome yellow laces that were supposed to match his boutonniere of sunflowers, since there was nothing yellow on it he had to go find some wildflowers that were yellow and stick them in it. There were supposed to be flower petals for the flower girl, they never brought them. So my family had to pick wild daisies and she dropped those. The refreshment stand wasn't at the ceremony like I had wanted. The owner claims that my wedding planner told her to put it elsewhere and if that's true fine, but the refreshments that I saw at the cocktail reception was not what was promised regardless. I was promised flavored lemonades, teas, and waters in a beautiful set up. What I saw was plain lemonade, plain tea and water in plastic jugs. Not a beautiful set up like was promised. The Bartenders had no idea how to make our signature drinks, nor did they have the ingredients to make them. And I am not talking about the booze, because we brought those ingredients I mean the mixers. The bartenders actually told guests they had never bartended before and asked guests what was in a gin and tonic, used grapefruit juice in a manhattan etc. They didn't have necessary tools to make drinks like a jigger, muddler, etc. So not only had they never bartended before but they didn't have the tools to make beverages. The bartender and server ruined a keg of bud light, they were observed rolling it down a flight of stairs and shaking it greatly and then over pumped the keg after tapping. The full keg was unusable. The servers and bartenders did not know how to open champagne bottle and had to be shown by guests how to do so. There were no dipping sauces served with the cigar bar like there were at tasting, there was no meat on our charcuterie station, the owner said there was but we reviewed the pictures and there was no meat, just cheese and vegetables. All hot food was cold except the fingerling potatoes, the short ribs were inedible because of toughness, nothing like the tasting. Service was extremely slow 2 people running 3 food stations that required service. I had to request servers during food service to serve wine and other beverages, because none were and told sorry someone called out and everyone else is downstairs setting up the bar. When the servers finally arrived they were pouring white wine in champagne glasses and my husband ask that he pour it in the wine glass and the server replied that he thought that was champagne. We also requested that they offer red and white wine at the same time and was told they could not and they would come back with the red, but i found out later they didnt even ask guests what kind of wine they wanted and just poured what they had in their hands. Not enough plates were brought to the event, about half of our guests including myself and my husband ate dinner on appetizer plates and the rest on dinner plates. Some of the tapas that were served was not the food agreed upon. When a dietary restricted guest asked for dessert it was brought to him whole, he requested that it be cut and he was handed a chefs knife. The cod was never served, arancini balls inedible. No knives or forks were placed at dessert table, cutting knife not available for bride and groom to cut the cake, water not filled at the table and when guests asked for water were told we were out?! The cake was then cut by the staff but not actually delivered to the tables, just left on a table in the back of the room so no one new to get any. The desserts were left out over night, no food was left from the banquet for us to take home even though I knew there were leftovers and in the contract it stated I could take it home. There was no coffee bar that we paid for. The servers were unaware of what kind of wine they served and told guests to read the label themselves. Over 12 bottles of wine were opened and then recorked unused and could not be brought home to be consumed later. Provided and discussed vintage hot cocoa jug that we wanted to use for our hot cocoa at the fire pit, they instead used small plastic containers, paid for 5 gallons and received 2. The sugar that was discussed to fill jugs for s'mores was not brought and when the server went out to purchase some, only got enough for one container out of three so it looked terrible. Guests were making their own drinks because the bartenders were incompetent. They ruined my wedding, don't book! read more

For the price I paid for a 6" cake it should have at least tasted good. The buttercream icing tasted like cheap whip cream icing. I don't think they even made the right cake. Made me sick eating it. My husband and I decided to have a party to celebrate our 30th anniversary. I wanted to hire a caterer and interviewed a number of them and after meeting with Sari, the owner of Yellow Carrot, I decided that they were the perfect choice for our event. Sari is a joy to work with. I was a caterer, at one point in my lifetime, so I am particular. We met several times to discuss the menu and rental needs. Sari makes sure that you are aware of her set-up procedures, responsibilities, staffing and breakdown. On the day of the party, she arrived with her staff to get familiar with the house and kitchen and how I was planning on setting up the guest tables. About 3 hours before the party, her chef, Jason and the staff arrived. Within 90 minutes, the catering area was set-up and it took my breath away with the artistic touches and the creativity. It was gorgeous and the food was laid out, not only beautifully, but in a way that made your mouth water. The food was delicious, the staff courteous and professional, the desserts magnificent. They surpassed my exceptions and my friends were more than impressed. If you are looking for a caterer, I highly recommend that the first organization you call is the Yellow Carrot. read more

Our family hired The Yellow Carrot to do the catering, bartending, wedding cake, and flowers for our daughter's wedding. We were so impressed with them from start to finish. They provided a vegetarian and (mostly) gluten free menu for our guests and it was impressive. We were also able to rent benches and tables for the reception. They can pretty much do anything you need. The flowers were high quality and beautiful and the cake was superb! The night of the reception, they handled everything so we could just enjoy. I found this spot on FindMeGlutenFree and was super excited to try them. I went to meet with them and did a tasting for my wedding. While the food was awesome and they were really nice at the tasting, when it came time to price my wedding they quoted me 3 times my max budget. When I tried to ask for changes they would not compromise. When I stated I would be going elsewhere they then tried to lower their quote almost $2000. When I still went someone else they tried to match my competitors prices by asking to see the invoices from my chosen caterer. While the food was good and I would have been happy to work with them they were not honest nor were they easy to work with. They have since charged me for the tasting which I think is poor sportsmanship. As i pointed out, if they could have done the food in my budget they should have done so the first time and then they would have earned my business. While the food was delicious I don't want to work with underhanded people. read more

My good friend was planning a wedding and they decided to have Y.C. cater. All sounded good until my friend wanted to downsize her order by a little bit, Y.C. did not take it very well, they told her she had to pick up her own food and warm it up herself without any of their staff's help. I understand downsizing an order can be frustrating but they shouldn't treat a bride to be this way, I recommend anyone looking for a nice and decent catering service, look elsewhere. They charge a lot of money. The Y.C. treats its customer "nice" only when they're are getting a big check. read more

It was VERY expensive and not at all what I ordered, in fact I had to get another cake last minute from City Market to serve at his birthday party. The decorations were hideous! It was absolutely unacceptable to even serve to a bunch of 4 year-olds. When I called to complain(I did not ask for a refund, I just wanted them to know how bad it was) they were curt, pretentious, and did not even offer an apology. The non-English speaking cook had made a mistake.
