Got off the interstate at the Greensboro exit, passed by the fast food places, and headed a little further down the road and found The Yesterday Cafe on Main Street across from the courthouse. They are open until 2pm for lunch and reopen at 5pm for dinner. Our server was Marley and she was personable and attentive. I had the chop steak covered in gravy and I chose the Mac and cheese and squash casserole for my sides.The chop steak was so tender and seasoned perfectly. It was delicious and the sides were homemade. My husband, who orders burgers everywhere we go, says this just might be the best burger he's ever eaten. When I visited the Yesterday Café in downtown Greensboro for the first time with my dad during a block party on Main St, at first glance, I knew I had to try the pimento cheese burger, which was very delicious with their regular salad that had bacon, cheese, and tomatoes! The Georgia peach vodka base cocktail was also really good and very balanced! With respect to service, the ladies working at the bar and at the tables were very consistent and even offered us buttered biscuits while we waited for our food, which took about maybe 5 to 10 minutes tops, which was a big plus. They were 1/4 in thick with more batter covering than meat, the collard greens were tasteless and the Mac and cheese underwhelming. Amazing food! Definitely worth checking out this cafe if you find yourself in the area. We sat outside with our two dogs. I had the fried green tomatoes which were excellent and chicken strips which were fried perfectly and had a homemade honey mustard dipping sauce which was divine. The sides that I recommend are the squash casserole and the collard greens. And of course I had to order a slice of Buttermilk pie. Thought I'd try this place seeming that it was busy. I ordered unsweetened tea but they gave me sweet tea I ordered the chopped steak which is basically Salisbury steak. I picked Mac n cheese and green beans as my sides. The chopped steak was tender and flavorful. The green beans were also great with a buttery flavor and perfect texture. Stopped by here for lunch on a Friday afternoon. I read the reviews and the menu so my wife and I both decided we needed to give it a try. The place was half full for lunch. There is plenty of seating with a full bar. We opted for the four vegetable plate. My wife and I got the fried okra, potato casserole, and black eye peas. I also got the collards and she got the squash casserole. The okra was fried perfectly and we both enjoyed the potato casserole that tasted like a twice baked potato without the actual potato. The peas were ok but needed some pepper sauce. I loved the collards and my wife liked squash. The sweet tea was good and the piece of cornbread with the meal was good. We decided to take back roads from John's creek to statesboro, so we drove right through Greensboro. What a happy find this cute restaurant was! It had plenty of character and charm in the middle of the historic district of Greenville. They serve southern food that did not disappoint. We both ordered the chicken fried steak. Between the two of us, we had collards, mac and cheese, black eyed peas, and squash casserole. Everything was on point! Excellent sweet tea. Perfect lunch stop. We ate at this local spot Yesterday. I took my buddy Jimmy "bottoms up" Lovett who is a pie aficionado. He won the North Atlanta Pie eating contest in '91, '92, and '94. Positive - the service was very friendly. But the food was awful. We had the southern sampler - fried green tomatoes, fries okra, and fried pickles. Everything was soggy. We primarily wanted fried green tomatoes so made sure to ask how many came with the sampler. She said 5, there were 3. We ordered chicken fingers, Caribbean chicken fingers, the buffalo-blue cheese chicken sandwich and the Caribbean chicken sandwich. My Caribbean chicken sandwich showed up fried instead of grilled. She took it away and brought it right back out with a sad, tiny piece of grilled chicken on it. The chicken is just dipped in the Caribbean sauce, and it is just sticky sweet. Yuck. The piece of cornbread the meal comes with is a joke for portion size like a 2" square. The service was not the best and there was only 1 other table (2 total) that had guest eating. Yesterday's Cafe was pretty underwhelming in my opinion. Pretty much all hype, and the delivery just isn't there. My friends and I actually went out of our way for this buttermilk pie. None of us had dined in, but they had gotten the pie to go before. We were seated at a 4-top near the back with the bar. Our drink orders were quickly taken, but from there the service was painfully slow. It took over 15 minutes to get drinks to our table, and then another 10 before our order was even taken. At first, I'd like to think we were understanding. The restaurant was packed when we were finally seated at 2. By 3, when our food finally came out, the place had cleared out. Food was okay. We started with a basket of fried pickles, fried okra, and fried green tomatoes. The tomatoes were good but the fried okra were just like grocery store frozen fried okra. I ordered a grilled chicken club, my friends the Caribbean tenders and the buffalo bleu. Both said that their entrees were mediocre at best. The mac and cheese was proclaimed to be made in house -- I'm skeptical. Finally, we all finished with buttermilk pie. The pie was great! I don't know if it's "Drive-30-minutes-out-of-your-way great, but if you're in the area definitely stop by and get some pie! It's custardy like a chess pie, with nicely caramelized sugar on top. Last Saturday my hubby and I were driving from NW Atlanta to Cherry Grove, SC and were looking for a place to have lunch. Thanks to my iPhone gps, I found this place just a few miles off I-20. The restaurant walls are covered with framed pictures of historic Greensboro memorabilia and each table had a blank book for customers to document their experience. I ordered the BLT made of fried green tomatoes, lettuce and bacon. It normally comes with Swiss cheese, however, pimento cheese was available for the burger featured that day. I asked to substitute the cheese and for a small up charge ($1.00) I enjoyed the best BLT in a while! My husband ordered the delicious chicken pot pie. The filling came in a sourdough bread bowl!
