My experience with this salon was anything but professional. I will never speak negatively of someone's hard work, I just feel my personal experience was not handled the best, and when the salon owner took charge the products fell flat. This is a very expensive salon. The quality that I received simply are not up to par with the cost of services and products in house. I made an appointment with Harmony back in the winter on this year for a trim, toner and blow out. This was the first appointment I attempted to make that was canceled. I received a polite call letting me know Harmony was sick. I rescheduled a couple days after to check my schedule. Please be advised I live in West Yellowstone, approximately 2 hours away from the salon. I chose hair theory because I liked their reviews. I book a hotel the evening before my appointment in February this year and drive to Bozeman. I check into my hotel and receive a call from the receptionist that Harmony has to cancel again. I actually went into the salon to speak to the manager. Cody took me on as her client which I was happy about. They put me I. For first thing in the morning. I brought my toner formula and everything. I noticed my toner was practically not even there when my hair was dry. This is formula for toner Redken shades 6RB 30 ml 6CB 30 ml 7C 20 ml 10-15 minutes This makes my hair a rich cherry tone which still sits naturally in my hair. My blow out was frizzy and my trim was uneven. I bought one product and left spending $200. I didn't realize how poorly my hair was taken care of until I returned to the stylist who shared this toner with me. My stylist pointed out my uneven cut and the brassy tone to my hair. Im aware hair oxidation is relevant ESPECIALLY with reds, however, the toners at this salon are simply watered down. There was a massive difference in quality that I could see. I'm not fully aware of other salons and quality out here and Bozeman but I must say the talent lacks at the cut back on quality here at those salon is far below mediocrity. Do more research than I did, I would choose another salon and I certainly should have taken the signs when I was canceled twice and should have just moved on. Taylor was amazing!! I've had curly hair and only went to a salon once where they didn't know how to cut my hair and I left in tears. But here.. I left feeling so happy. I cancelled my appointment with Katie at Theory less than 48 hours notice but more than 30 hours notice. I received a text message to confirm which I responded I would like to cancel - it didn't allow me to cancel through text, no where in the text did it say 48 hours notice required for cancelling. She immediately charged me $67.50 for the cancellation. Although it was ok for Katie to change the time of my appointments with no notice. If I could rate Theory with no stars that would be it! read more

Returning to my home state of Montana and being in my first year back, I'm doing all the relocation things: dentist, doctor, eye, hair, etc etc etc. I was recommended Theory, and after having disappointing highlights done in LA, I instantly felt relief in first Trevor's chair, and now Taylor's. The location is downtown, and the vibe is great. Trevor is the owner, and really cares about his shop. My experience with Taylor has been incredible the past year - I finally felt brave enough to try color again, and Taylor worked with me. She took the time to get to know me, who I am, what I'm about. She studies the whole person as she begins to work with all things hair. I love that I TRUST Taylor. And I have NEVER found that, and I have had the best stylists in the world from London, Paris, the Middle East/NY/DC, LA. I couldn't quite find my fit or my person. And finally, in Bozeman Montana, I found her and Theory! I feel like I can explore, be a bit adventurous in the future, try out different things. As an artist, I want and need the ability to work with a fellow artist on self expression and with Taylor I have that. I don't live in Bozeman any longer--I'm now in Santa Barbara, CA. Despite being one of Los Angeles's resort towns, Santa Barbara seems to lack a salon that offers Theory's combination of talent, environment, and affordability. Bozeman does pull in some great businesses and entrepreneurs! I've been going to Jackie for a few years, and I'm seeing her while I'm in Bozeman for the week. I usually ask her to use her expertise to style my hair as she thinks would be best for me. Of course, this requires that Jackie understands my own style and personality, so that she can make my hair complement both well. Jackie does great with all of this. Plus, I love talking to her (something I absolutely cannot say about everyone who has cut my hair in my life), so I truly enjoy the visits. P.S. I have to say that almost everyone at Theory has touched my hair at one time or another and I have always left there feeling great! The whole crew there is extremely talented, professional and aim to please. My family has also had the pleasure to use the services provided while visiting Bozeman. My sister had her hair colored, majorly cut and styled - adorable! My nieces had their hair styled and were treated like princesses. Katie is awesome! She's a Bozeman native and keeps herself current w/ all the newest techniques and fads, and she does this by traveling to the "big" cities for classes and/or internships. I've been getting my hair trimmed and styled by Katie Minalga for about a year now, and she is one of the best stylist I've ever had! I recently got my hair cut almost 13 inches, and I was very nervous but she talked me into it and I am so glad she did! She colored my hair perfectly, exactly like the photograph I showed her! She pays attention to detail and listens to clients requests. She does more than just a hair cut, I am moving soon and I might just have to make a trip back for future hair appointments. I have very thick, kinky, hard to deal with hair and I have left many stylists chairs in tears in over the course of my life, but Joan not only fixed past mistakes from other stylists, she gave me a cut and style I left her chair feeling like a million bucks. I've been getting my hair cut here since I moved to Bozeman in 2012 and i LOVE Theory! I have never had anything less than excellent service and I've always been very happy with my haircuts. My regular stylist is Alice and I have seen Deana once. They are both fantastic! Very skilled artists, very friendly and easy to talk to, and with reasonable rates. I just got a cut today from Alice, and she outdid herself yet again. I trust her enough to let her make "executive decisions" about my style which I wouldn't normally do with just any stylist. So now I have bangs, and I have to say they are bangin! (haha) The last two haircuts I had (not at Theory) were just ok, and when my hair grew out it became hard to manage and didn't cooperate as it usually does. Now it looks and feels amazing. I seriously LOVE this salon. Also, the atmosphere of the space is very pleasant and welcoming. It is hip without being pretentious. Everyone who works there is very friendly and accommodating. I feel like a guest and not just another customer. They feature local artists, and it's always fun to see what new art is adorning the walls. The products they use are fantastic, and they offer a really nice selection of complimentary teas, coffee, and candy. Anyway if you aren't already convinced, go to Theory! I just received a beautiful hair cut from Cori! She was laid-back and very attentive to my hair. I really appreciated the time and care she took while giving me a cut--I have very thick hair and she made it feel light, healthy and thin. I'm always a little apprehensive that my thick hair will look like a mushroom when I get it cut shoulder-length, but she did an excellent job. No mushroom in sight :) Even though it's an upscale salon, I'm willing to budget for their prices because they truly deliver and have the skills to back up what they charge. Thanks, Theory! Has your baby ever been kicked out of a hair salon? Here's a little story I would like to share. I was referred to Theory by many friends and when I scheduled my appointment I was scheduled for many weeks out. My five month old started teething the morning of my appointment and I knew I couldn't leave him. I had also waited for many weeks for my appointment and didn't want to cancel the morning of. So it made perfect sense to me to bring him right along with me. I would also like to note that I have been to many salons before and my children have always been more than welcome so I didn't even question bringing him along. When we got to the salon we were greeted very kindly by a few employees. Some pinched my babies big cheeks and others rubbed is soft head. Then my stylist, Jody, (whom I'd never met) came around the corner. * "Hi. what do you want done today?" I showed her a picture and that was it. She didn't speak to me for an hour. I tried. I asked if she has kids. "Two." "How long have you worked here?" "Three years." Being the sensitive type, I kept telling myself it wasn't me, she must be having a bad day. My baby started to cry a little and she looked at him "no screaming aloud in this salon young man!" while waving her finger. Certainly she was kidding. Right? Another half hour passed and she said "haven't you ever heard of Dino Drop?" I responded that I hadn't, thinking it was some odd hair product or something. "It's a place you can drop your kids off. $5.00 for 2 hours!" "Oh no no. My husband is around, Remi is just teething and I couldn't get myself to leave him". We are mid haircut at this point. "He is going to have to be quiet or we are going to call it quits right now. We can't have noise like this in our salon". I was speechless. Literally half of my hair was long, the other half short or I would have walked out. My husband ended up coming to pick up my baby and my hair turned out lovely. But my experience is one I hope no one else ever has. There were many opportunities for them to tell me politely and professionally that children are not welcome. I paid $200 for two hours of my time that left me feeling completely shocked and speechless. I will never go to this salon again. read more

I have cut my hair all over the world, from Paris to Boston and I must say Theory could compete with any high end place anywhere. You would expect a great cutting edge salon like this to not be available in Bozeman. Thankfully, you would be so wrong! The place is a gem, a true hair oasis and Celeste is an amazing hair stylist. Her cuts are hip, cutting edge and grow out beautifully. I have a pixie cut and she has done super cool stuff with it, which has allowed me to go as long as 2 months without a cut. The men's haircut I got at Theory was so bad that I immediately went elsewhere to get it fixed. This was the only time in my life I got a haircut so bad that I was embarrassed to be seen in public. The moment I sat down to get it fixed, the stylist asked if I'd just been to Great Clips. I felt scammed knowing that my $40 haircut looked no better than a haircut from Great Clips. I went to Theory on a visit to Bozeman from Helena because I had heard many great things about the salon, and I needed a nice haircut for a special event I was going to. When I got home and looked in the mirror I saw that the hair on the left side of my head had been cut significantly shorter than the hair on the right side of my hair. The haircut was also very patchy. Some areas were cut far too short and others cut far too long. On top of that, there were many stray long hairs all over my head, and at least a dozen more long hairs behind my ears. My stylist had been texting during the haircut, so I should not be surprised things turned out so sloppy. I'm sure there are many great stylists at Theory, but it was irresponsible of the salon to hand me off to somebody who had no idea what they were doing. read more

I travel A LOT, and Yelp is my saving grace. I was in town last year and disappointed I couldn't synch up with Theory. Thankfully, I'm here for six months. The rave about the salon and stylists is accurate. Cori did an amazing cut and hi/lo light on my hair follicles. She pulled out the weight to give the natural movement I desired. The color is second to none. Anyone can be trained to cut hair, but a stylist comes from within. Cori is such a stylist. I watched the others and the product coming out of the chair. I don't think you will go wrong. They hold each other to the same standard. Who knows? We may have to settle here full time just for my ego! Is it spendy? I have fine-textured, straight hair that I wear in long layers at shoulder-length. The $35 price was extremely reasonable compared to what I've paid in the past in Denver and Indianapolis.
