I just got a haircut here like an hour ago and I have to say, I absolutely love it. I'm pretty clear on how I want things so I took a couple of pictures with me just for reference sake. Korey let me tell her, in my own obscure way, exactly how I wanted the side bangs cut and what I hoped the layers would look like. I appreciate the fact that she was very realistic in her approach by telling me that pictures of people with great hair are always almost styled that way. She also said she appreciates the fact that I understand that and don't want my hair to look exactly like some celebrity's. We worked together on the cut throughout with Korey's inputs, suggestions and more importantly, asking me at every step if I approved of what was being done or if I wanted something different. This has been my first haircut in Bozeman since I moved here and I was admittedly nervous about it. I also always thought that when stylists ask if you want something changed, they actually expect you to go along with them and might take offense to your suggestion. Silly me. Korey was just so friendly and warm that I was at ease within my first five minutes at Essence. She suggested that shorter side bangs are harder to maintain unless I straighten them everyday. My hair is downright stubborn and super wavy and curly in places. So my side bangs, if I don't straighten them or pin them up everyday, curl at all the wrong points. After some consideration and trials, I told her I did want it a little shorter and wouldn't mind the curling initially but could straighten them later. And wala! She worked her magic. As a result, I walked out of there feeling wonderful, comfortable, confident about going back to her and glad that I chose to put my faith in her. As if the feel-good factor wasn't already there, the whole thing- hair wash, cut, her inputs and styling - cost me a total of $35. That to me, is a steal! PLUS, her clients get free trims for bangs or fringes and all they have to do is call or text her and spare 10 min of their time. All in all, a day well spent. (I gave this 4 stars only because I consider myself hard to impress and to me, 5 stars mean 'out of this world'.) read more

I followed my stylist to this salon. New ownership transformed the place into a clean, attractive and efficient operation. The proximity to campus and ample parking make this salon convenient. Can't say I was impressed at all by my experiences here. The first time I went in for a medium brown (read good reviews on the place) Sheryl turned my hair one shade shy of black and got defensive and rude until I showed her the swatch of color that didn't match at all. Embarrassed for a month until I could wash enough with harsh shampoos to lighten it to a closeish match. Went in a second time for a second chance (after I tried to wash it out over 6 months in an attempt to wash all traces of color) and she turned my new growth gold by using too weak of a bleach on them on top of trying to cover up the yellow in my ends with, again, weak bleach and toner without using a pretoner. Mind you, payed over $100 for this mess that was supposed to be ash and I had to cover my roots with a hat for two weeks until I could pay someone another $100 to fix this mess. My ends looked nice for a week (I'll give her that) before they turned yellow again when she said it should last 2 1/2 weeks. Mind you, I've actually had better success with box color for years now seeing as I'm a natural light brunette. Second chances don't always pay off. Tried to play nice at the end and say it looked fine. Don't ever go here if you have a yellow tint to your blonde. read more
