After the young lady came back out the office which I'm guessing was the supervisor came behind her yelling very loud and rudely telling the lady that she don't care what she does. This was a very uncomfortable and u professional setting. The supervisor then walks over to the young lady at the front desk and starts yelling in her face. At this point I'm like wow, who is this lady! I pray that she NEVER has to go into my family member room for anything. If this is how she talks to coworkers, I can only imagine how she treats the residents. I give big kudos to the ladies at the front desk because their cool was definitely kept and they remained very professional after the fact. The lady at the back desk even apologized to all of us in the lobby for having to see that! Now that was professional and appreciated by us all.

Please see my other review on this place. On December 4th, 2017 my dad passed away. Joe called me and said your "your dad died" yes over the phone. I gathered my composure and rushed there. No one was there to help us. They zipped my dad in a body bag while I watched. The only person who would initially help me was the head of maintenance. The head of directors were so insensitive. Please don't make the same mistake I made and send your loved one here.

This started with a 3 fusion neck spine, Inova Alexandria Hospital then Inova Mount Vernon (IMV)…read morethen Alexandria Rehabilitation & Healthcare Center (ARHC). At IMV I had one-on-one with PT (physical therapy), OT (occupational therapy) and SLP (speech language pathology) therapies, eight days, 21 hours. If I am wrong and the first day did not have any therapies then there were "only" 18 hours. That is real rehabilitation. ARHC is not rehabilitation. There were seven full days, the first was Friday and and absolutely no therapy on that Friday. All ARHC therapies are half hours. l add two more just to help things so there are better; that's 4 hours. To make it "fair" I'll chop off one IMV day to get them equal; that's 15 hours. ARHC is 27% compared for the same numbers of days. Rehabilitation? At ARHC I do not know if there is any SLP at ARHC; I did not get any SLP. The PT and OT staff are pretty good but have an environment not easy. Most have two or some even have more than two patients and few patients are just sitting on a chair. The "gym" is small and and the equipment very few, not good. Two exercise bicycles, a new one where the hand bar and pedals have no connection, strange and never to use again. An older and much better but the LEDs all gone so the therapy used their cell phone and tells a few things while someone else is doing something slow and more time. Most of the time were with 3 pound dumbballs, watched and counted but after twice done almost alone. The balance board was also good with the therapy placed to catch if I stumbled or let me between two rails. I've had bowel problems. That cause was not the ARHC staff. The problem was that after the mess it took more than 10 minutes to not get help with the red button. There were about 30 feet from my door with about four staff were chatting real loud (if not screaming) and I left my door not wearing any pants going to the other end to the desk at the hall end. Someone caught me real fast (not physical) and got back to fix it. That helped clean me up but it took more than a day to get the toilet and floor "reasonably" clean but not really clean. The food was the worst I have ever had. To be honest I am very picky and that does not mean that I what I like is what most people do like. But how could every patient get exactly the same thing that every one gets? How well do almost everyone think cooked food that is barely warm is OK. Some do actually have warm parts, but only in the middle and bottom on the plate, or you learn that you can get your plate heated in the microwave with those who bring and take the food. I like oatmeal cereal, when I cook it as the box says and use some milk and sugar. I tried them several times and spit them out. They were mostly cool not warm, sticky, tasteless, some lumpy, other times ground to nothing. I like scrambled eggs; these were OK and I ate all even if not warm. I ate about 20% of what I was willing the entire time I was there. The last full day I had a dizzy like never before and they put me in a wheelchair. They use a cuff and my heart was about 80/50 or 50/80. They sort of said I needed to eat if I wanted to live. I think that's enough. george.shaffer@comcast.net

I had had a second seizure along with other health issues, (pneumonia, UTI, SEPSIS which brought me there. I WAS VERY SICK. In spite of it, I bent over backwards to b pleasant because the good workers deserved it. I arrived at Encompass late, approximately 11:30 PM, but had been told I'd go there at 3 pm. I guess you were running late. The intake team was very good and welcoming. I was told what my basic days there would entail. I wanted to come home badly so knew I would do all I was asked to make that hope a reality. I met and worked with many people (nurses, CNAs, occupational therapists, physical therapists, speech therapists, doctors, and case managers....) I had only one real issue with an occupational therapist and I did report her, which is not me at all. All I know is her first name was Cheryl, and she doesn't work there often. She should never spend a day working there. She came at 8 am for me to take a shower my 3rd day with you. I have chronic back pain resulting from three major back surgeries and hot showers help the pain so much. I was so looking forward to that shower. I admit I was very weak, and her method ,involved my doing everything myself, and talking down to me when I struggled I took her condescending attitude but my being anxious and not trusting her made my pain level shoot sky-high. I tried to talk to Cheryl, but she treated me as nothing but an imposition. I told her another OT had helped me shower two days earlier to which she rudely replied, "so you don't really even need a shower.". I hadn't slept for a week and was quite emotionally down and did not need to be talked to like I was a child and a problem. My husband came to see me a few hours later and found me crying in my bed - not a good experience!!! The other therapists I worked with were good. It's a shame how one person who has no business being around people who need encouragement and compassion to recover can ruin the entire process. I hope my experience was not the norm.

My PT sessions alternated between Maggie and Kris twice a week until late May, when my visits tapered off to once a week until completion of my therapy in mid- to late-June. Both Maggie and Kris are consummate professionals, friendly and engaging but also acutely aware of what I could (and couldn't do) at the various stages of my recovery. Without their help, I would not have recovered as quickly - and as strongly - as I did. They were very knowledgeable, while still being careful, about expanding my ankle's range of motion and building its strength, which in turn gave me more confidence in the progress of my recovery. Because of their prudent treatment and careful prodding, I was starting neighborhood walks by late March, resumed bike riding in early May, and started hitting golf balls again in mid-May. By the end of May, I was taking 25 mile bike rides and playing 18 holes of golf - well ahead of my anticipated recovery schedule. I'm very grateful for their treatment and professionalism, as well as for the work of the staff at Medstar PT Arlington. My treatment overlapped with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the protocols at Medstar were very solid. I would highly recommend their services to anyone in need of PT.

The most serious issue was wound care. Nursing staff gave conflicting answers about who was even responsible for his dressing changes, and it wasn't until three weeks in that we learned staff nurses were supposed to be changing it daily. They weren't. Requests were routinely met with "we'll get to it tomorrow." At one point two nurses stood over him, unsure how to change his dressing, and a third staff member attempting it alone tore the skin around the wound. On his discharge day, his dressing wasn't changed at all. He ended up needing urgent care after getting home because the wound started smelling. Basic care was also a problem. He'd ring the call button needing help to use the restroom and wait hours with no response, sometimes soiling himself in the meantime. I once watched a nurse silence his call button, say "I'll be back," and not return for hours. The main line (202-854-7100) frequently rang unanswered, especially on weekends. There were entire weekends I couldn't reach anyone. He also fell through the cracks on discharge planning. The social worker never came to see him when he was admitted, went unreachable for weeks afterward (she later admitted she doesn't check her messages), and as a result the referrals needed for his at-home care were never completed. There were a few kind, attentive nurses, and the facility itself was generally clean. But the overall standard of care on the third floor was inconsistent, slow, and at times unsafe. We chose Carroll Manor because of a previous positive family experience, but this stay was completely different. If you are considering this facility for someone you love, ask detailed questions about staffing levels, wound care protocols, response times, and discharge planning before making your decision.
