I've been a member of Roots since moving to Boulder in 2012. In my biased opinion (and isn't that…read morewhat Yelp is all about?), Roots is the best CrossFit gym in all of Boulder ... and the country, far as I've seen - and I've dropped into my fair share. Let me explain: * The size of the gym is spacious, not cramped, and always clean and organized. Total win. * There's a mindful flow to class structure with a group warm-up and WOD intro that is guided - it's never a free-for-all. And the class waits to break their sh*t down until everyone is finished WODing. * The coaches are the best, most skilled IMO. They care about form and foundational movements and technique. They keep class sizes small so you get the attention you need, whether you want to admit it or not, to get better and, more importantly, move safely. * They have four dedicated Oly platforms, where is where I now spend the majority of my time. I love that. I got my own space to work on my Oly lifts or pull out a rack to back/front squat, without having to fight for space, barbells, or plates. * They have ample Open Shop time that I utilize for shizzle. No other gym in/around town is going to let you treat their shop like your own personal gym, but Roots does with near-daily Open Shop times that let you come in and do your own thing, catch up on a WOD you might've missed, or work on technique and gymnastics. * There's always a coach onsite. If you need a spot, some advice, or general pep talk, you don't have to look far to get the support you need as an athlete. I love that. Sometimes, you may even get advice from a coach without asking - that's how much they care. Okay, here comes the WARNING: If you join Roots - or even try it for a few days and classes, be ready to FEEL SPOILED. To feel like no other gym will ever meet your expectations, because that's exactly what will happen. Roots is the best, worth every cent, and very accomodating for all athletes of all ages (they have a kids program and a seniors program), as well as community-minded and welcoming. To be honest, when I moved to Boulder without knowing ANYONE, I got through that first awkward couple of years (you know, trying to meet friends and trying to feel at home) because of Roots. I started in their Women's Only program and made fast friends with the ladies, before I self-graduated myself into the standard track after doing the 2014 Open. If you're a member of Roots, I think you can agree with me - you feel like you're part of something special, something important, something worth preserving at all costs. It's not the cult-mindset (ha, like that even exists in CrossFit); it's the Roots Family outlook. When you're in, you're in.

This week at CrossFit roots after participating in a multi-day gymnastics seminar coached by Shane my wife was invited by her classmates to participate in the daily wod. When she attempted to walk into the group coach Shane asked her "what are you doing". My wife made her wishes known and was coolly informed she is not a member of that box and may not participate. Even when another athlete offered immediately to invite my wife as her guest coach Shane remained adamant that joining the wod was for some reason against the rules. This is a disappointing experience to have at such a well-established box. CrossFit Roots is known to be the home of several well-known CrossFit athletes, good coaching and unfortunately also a somewhat callous management. If you are looking to join a box in Boulder I cannot recommend CrossFit roots.

But that didn't stop me from trying out this super friendly, clean and knowledgable box. As soon as I walk in, it was all smiles and welcomes, and "make yourself at home" ( I love that aspect of our community). Gary Berg, owner and Coach, was outstanding. Perfect amount of offered guidance and cues, mixed with a "find what works for you approach". His space is that ideal box us city dwellers yearn for. Great rigs, lots of space for every/ any lift, ropes, rings, even a Ski Erg...which I had never tried, so of course I gave it a go after a burner of a work out and some cash out sled pulls and runs. Great machine, hope I never see it again...lol Okay, real talk time. This box is friendly, well laid out, welcoming, knowledgable and had some great programming on the board, including the one I tackled. 2 round for time met con wod of 25 wall balls (20lb), 25 double unders, 25 abmat situps, 25 cal row. There was a great warm up, some skills and drills for handstands at the wall and walking (got up to 16 yards) and rowing work prior to the wod. The athletes that were there mirrored the coach, as they do at many boxes, and were just pleasant and hardworking people. A+ box, more like it please!

CrossFit Longmont rocks!…read more As a lifetime exercise "hater" it sure sounds odd to hear myself saying that... But it's true: I've found "my tribe" here at CFL. I've been going to crossfit for just over a year now, and while it was hard as hell at first, I am now feeling better physically than I ever have in my life. Well, maybe I felt better when I was 25 but that was so long ago it doesn't count, lol. I really can't say "thank you!!" loudly enough to everyone at the box - to Sarge and Frank for doing the work it takes to even own and operate a box, to Cheryl for dragging me kicking and screaming in protest to just give it a go, to Trish who caught me trying to sneak back out the door my first day and kept encouraging me till I got past the point I wanted to quit, to the awesome barbell club coaches Brandon and Rocky and Bob for their seemingly endless patience with my clumsiness, and most especially to all the athletes (Sarge insists we're all 'athletes' - which amuses me - but I'm just weird) that make every WOD a fantastic experience. (a special shout out to the 6AM crew here: even 'Murph' is fun with that bunch of crazies!) My two bits? No matter what your fitness level is, you owe it to yourself to get your butt in here and find out for yourself what I'm talking about! You can thank me after, I'll be the old chubby guy lying on the floor in the corner gasping for air... ;-)
