Don't bother going to this guy. He does not return calls or emails and doesn't even call to review your tax return. We turned in our documents in mid March and we're told that they don't do in person or zoom meetings. Ok not a big deal as long as we can go over it on the phone. We called and emailed for multiple weeks trying to get an update on our taxes, he finally emailed 1/2 of the returns (we filed married by separate) midday on 4/15 (Friday), still no call/email, or anything else to talk about our return. We tired to ask the receptionist questions and she said she didn't know. I don't understand why we had to ask the receptionist question vs the CPA who we were paying to file our taxes. To add insult to injury they charged us just under 500$ to files our taxes. Don't waste your time, your money l, or energy with this guy. Update: 4/16. So the CPA finally called me back, he was condescending and somehow couldn't understand that I had questions regarding My return. His response, " it was a simple return why would I call you? I DIDNT HAVE QUESTIONS". It was somehow beyond his level of comprehension that it was me, the person paying hundreds of dollars to have a professional do his taxes that had question. He basically said, I don't know what you want and hung up. I normally don't spend so much time on reviews but this guy got under my skin. If I could give him negative stars I would. read more

My grandma was a client of Scott Lawrence since 1998 , Theisen picked up his clientele which my grandmother was apart of after his passing. Scott used to charge my grandmother $150 for her taxes, this guy charged her $350. I understand that times are different and prices are going up and for the last few years he has been charging her $350, she chucked it up to her filing a long tax form. BUT we went to a new tax office and charged her only $195 to do her taxes AND offered to fix the errors that Theisen made over the years for free. That leads me into my next complaint, my grandmother has supposedly owed money to the IRS since 2017, and she's had to mail in proof to the IRS to show record of certain things that Theisen did not properly input or document. Over the past 5 years my grandmother has had to owe over $5,000 for errors that were made on Theisens part. She has tried to dispute these errors and they found the errors they made but none of it was ever 100% corrected. I just think of the other elderly people who can't look into their records or dont have access to them what are they supposed to do? Thank goodness my grandmother has the background in finances that she does because if she didn't lord knows how much she would have had to pay. The past reviews are correct, there has been no communication nor willingness to meet with you in regards to taxes. She paid $350 for a fast food tax return. This place is so deceptive! The office staff and Mr. Theisen are friendly and amiable. We had been coming here for several years, while hubby and I were both working. The rates they charged were reasonable, we thought. Then some circumstances changed, still working, but we had inherited income property, and oil property on which we were receiving rents and royalties. So the income tax rates he charged us started to go up! That's understandable, right? More complicated, it should cost a bit more. Forward a few more years, and the price continues to go up $100 or more a year!! In 2020 we paid him $1,600 or more for income taxes. I had wanted to get a new tax guy for some years, but I had waited too long each year, and I was Not able to change at the last minute. Our new tax man found an error! Theisen was having us pay self employment taxes on rents and royalties, but we are not self employed! It is passive income, we are not business owners,so self employment tax is not required! Our taxes reduced so much that we are getting a refund of thousands! And the new man charged us only $360 for doing our taxes!! Theisen was bad news all around. He also had us pay $8,000 in estimated tax for 2021, which we also are getting back with our refund. Theisen has been fired! read more

We have been clients of Thomas Theisen for many years, and were always satisfied. Unfortunately this year we went to pick up our taxes and he increased his prices by $200.00 dollars, we were never informed on this price increase when we dropped off our documents. As you can imagine we were very upset. Especially when so many people out of work at this time with Covid 19. It's sad to think how people are still looking out for themselves and not others. When this business belonged Scott Lawrence in the past he was very professional and caring. And I know this would have never happened. We will no longer be using Mr. Theisen services. Most of my dealings with Tom can be done over the telephone or the internet, but when I need to meet with him I don't mind driving from La Canada Flintridge to Whittier. Anyone can put the numbers into a computer and generate a tax return. However, it takes an experienced professional tax accountant (CPA) who knows the tax law and is able to provide excellent tax planning that will lower the taxes you will ultimately pay when you file your returns with the state and Federal govenments.
