Great place with great food and drinks. We were able to prop up by the bar, watch the open and eat great cottage pie and fish & chips. The staff was so friendly and welcoming to us out of towners. We were out exploring evening Cork, and wanted a traditional Irish dinner. We went from pub to pub, restaurant to restaurant, and found either no food at all, or burgers and chips, or Italian, French, Middle Eastern, or Asian. Every pub owner/bar tender/bouncer we talked to recommended a different place, and each place failed to have traditional Irish foods. We ended up pulling up Google Maps, and searching for beef Guinness stew, with Thomond Bar coming up as the only result. Going straight there, we found a full menu, excellent service, and delicious food. Had a bit of a cultural differences moment when we asked for a black and cider, sort of like a black and tan, but with cider instead of light beer, and were greeted with a blank stare. It ended up being called a Half and Half in Ireland. Black and Tans were constables recruited into the Royal Irish Constabulary in the 1920s, and were known to burn down Irish homes/businesses, and kill pro-Irish independence civilians. Decent sized bar near the shopping area of Cork. Found this looking for a pint and ended up staying and ordering some food. As this was the first Good Friday open, it was not as busy at first, but got pretty full around 6p. We ordered Bangers and Mash plus Fish and Chips later. Both were standard pub fare good, especially the bangers. Prices were reasonable. If you are looking for a good pub, you could do much worse than this one. read more

We made a stop in before hitting the airport, and it was the greatest decision we made. To start, the atmosphere is that of a pub. It was welcoming and cozy, and the people were all very happy to be there. The staff were quick to sit us down and grab our order. When I saw the beef and Guinness stew is among the greatest things to ever grace a bowl, I mean it. On a rainy day, the warm stew was everything I needed and wanted. We also had the bangers and mash, which was reviewed as 'making the trip worth it.' And of course we had chips to top it all off. The food was fantastic and fresh and warm. The drinks were also perfect, with a Guinness and a cider. A weird highlight of the place was the bathrooms, as they were so clean and well maintained that I feel it had to be mentioned!! While in Cork this is a good place to visit for a good meal. They serve traditional pub food that is a nice portion. The cottage pie was excellent and filling. Also ordered was the lasagna and chicken tenders, which I was told were both very good by those accompanying me. The bar was active and seemed to have several locals in. Lunch today on our cork day trip. We stopped here on a whim for a pint and some food before going into the English market. Fish and chips was 2 good sized pieces of fish and husband had the Yankee Doodle burger which looked great on a yummy bun. Cash only when we were there unfortunately. I ordered the vegetable soup after all other soups were not available- you could almost see in the waiters eye that it was a bad choice but given no other soup was available I went forward. I got, in return, what seemed to be a bowl of blended potatoes with the consistently of oatmeal complete, all while packing little to no taste. In general we were ignored by the wait staff which was insult to injury. If you do attend, if suggest only ordering drinks. read more
