They had issues related to a mill being stolen but I was willing to wait because they're a small, local company. So Jared says my slab is set to be cut first week of May and he contacted me May 3rd to verify measurements and he says they're getting ready to cut it. That's the last contact Jared had with me. I recommended to my family to go to hilltop for an unrelated wood project. While they were at hilltop in early July, they asked about the status of my wood slab and were told "yeah, we couldn't do that". That was the entire explanation. I never heard from Jared. Horrible customer service and honestly would never do business with them. I'd still be waiting if family members hadn't happened to ask while they were there. Do yourself a favor and go to Asheville Hardware instead, I walked in and had my pick of over 100 slabs, got one for cheaper than hilltop quoted me and had it in my garage that same day. So hilltop took 6 months and I got no slab. Asheville Hardware, I had a slab in my truck within an hour. The owner of hilltop left me a voicemail after I contacted them. Apparently he had no idea any of the issues with my order or the customer service I received which isn't a good sign for an extremely small business.

We were not satisfied and decided to look elsewhere midway in our project. We first gave Mateo a smaller job. They did such an excellent job that we assigned them the full project at that point. We could not be happier. It was like night and day compared to the previous company we had hired. Mateo showed up every day and worked hard to stay on schedule which they did. That is more than I can say about the previous company. Mateo also gave us a fair price and did not price gouge us. The quality of their work is outstanding. We were amazed at how fast they got it done and how dedicated they were to getting it right. Because of how well they did when we first moved here, we made the decision to only use Mateo construction for our outdoor space. Incidentally, we had to rebuild our staircase off our deck during this project, and Mateo was even able to do that. Next, I want to discuss dedication. We were in the middle of the this huge landscaping project (which covered about an acre of our property) and it was not finished around the time that Hurricane Helene hit. We had all the new trees in our driveway (to be planted) and the mulch was supposed to be laid. The Wednesday afternoon before Helene hit us on Friday morning, Mateo Construction showed up with enough workers to secure our trees and pour mounds of mulch and lay boulders in that acreage. Otherwise, it was raw dirt that would have eroded into the homes beneath us. Our house sits at 2600 feet elevation. They even did this in the rain just to make sure that we were OK. After Helene passed, they came by to check on us. They uprighted some trees that fell over. We also use them in the winter for our 300+ foot driveway when it ices. We are loyal customers! We are beginning a large addition to our existing home. And, of course, we have chosen Mateo Construction to do the hardscaping and landscaping for this project.

I can't recommend Smokey Mountain Hardscapes enough. Tate and his crew are excellent, with a great…read morework ethic and a great attitude. Smokey Mountain Hardscapes installed permeable pavers on our driveway. It was a challenging job because we are on a very steep lot. There was a slope of over 5 feet from one end of the driveway to the other, and Hurricane Helene tore up what was left of the original gravel driveway until it was about the size of a goat path. Tate and his crew worked diligently, arriving on time and often staying late, to adjust the driveway slope and reinforce it, adding walls and block where needed. When they finished, our driveway was not only stable and sturdy, but beautiful. We took Tate's advice and added two block columns and a set of stone steps with a handrail at the back end of the driveway and we are so glad we did. Tate is a perfectionist and worked extremely hard to make sure that things were even, level, and solid. He communicated well, so we were never surprised by costs. By the way, they also do retaining walls, a much needed element of mountain living. We trust them completely, and plan to hire them again once we get around to putting in a deck in the back yard. The mechanic/owner did not charge me for the inspect (even though the sign on the office wall states there would be a charge for failed inspection. What blew my mind was this shop guy found the part in a local bone yard for me to go pick up. Later that day he intalled the part I bought in and pass my truck for the inspection.
