I had my vehicle towed to them. I told them what was what was wrong/what was going on. I asked them to tell me what was wrong with the engine misfiring. They ended up calling me told me I $124 for labor so far and asked if I wanted them to proceed further. All they did was tell me exactly what I told them. They didn't actually do anything or diagnose anything. Charged me $124 and they were extremely rude. Do not take your car here. read more

Charged to do an inspection on a wheel bearing. Said it was the tires. So we changed the tires and brought it to another shop who found the bad wheel bearing. Absolute waste of $125​​. They also over torqued our brakes causing more issues. This place should not be in business. read more

I just paid 52.95 for an oil change and I supplied my own oil and filter. This is way over 2X that I have ever paid for this exact service. The prices that I recently paid were as little as 15 and as high as 20 dollars. Do the math. If you take $52.59 and divide it by $20.00 your answer is 2.6457. That is 264.75%. They told me that they had to raise the price. The last time I checked peoples wages were not recently multiplied by 264.75% followed by a valid paycheck. I have no plans of going back. When this family business started out they were great at customer service. That was years ago. Now they have more then one location and several employees and from what I have heard from close friends is that stellar service may have declined since then. I luckily have not needed immediate car repair, but I'm going to base my review on what I do know about them personally; I was never knowingly given anything except quality service. The shop has been there for years, as I grew up in Kentwood I remember passing it an innumerable amount of times. Recently, I've had some set backs in regards to my vehicle and thought since it was so close and they seem to be a staple in the community, why not stop in and see if they could help. As you can see my rating, I was not pleased with the result. I call to schedule an appointment, then changed my initial servicing request (part replacement) to a different request (routine maintenance/upkeep) as I further investigated the problem. I drop off my vehicle around 10a, and they shuttle me to my place, which I thought was an excellent perk. The shop calls me around 3:30p and said they didn't even fulfill my request, but instead ran a diagnostics test and determined the issue was a broken head gasket... Now, don't get me wrong, I trust their judgment as far as the next average Joe who has little to no knowledge about engines and their components. However, the issue was they didn't even give me the service I wanted! In fact, they just decided to do this diagnostics test without my consent, and then billed me for it. I get that this vehicle is on it's way out unless I drop serious cash for repairs (which was relatively the same amount I paid for it in the first place), but when I ask for a specific service and it isn't received...well, you wouldn't pay a chai latte when you asked for a cup of coffee, would you? Whatever. I request for the shuttle to pick me up, pay the man for this test I never asked for, in fear that if I protested they would refuse to give me my key, all the while they keep reiterating that they are 'sorry for the bad news.' When people tell you to support small business, you would expect operations to run unlike that of a big corporation. This was not the case. I felt cheated. read more

Went in for a rear subframe and rear passenger side control arm replacement they ordered aftermarket parts instead of OEM that was quoted by my insurance (Progressive). They charged me an extra $118 for the aftermarket parts including my deductible of $500, totaling in $618. After a recieved my vehicle back 10 miles into my trip home I noticed a tear in the my leather seats in my 2017 Subaru Outback I took it back to them for employee negleglence I pointed the finger at them stating that it wasn't there before I brought it in and had a photo to prove. So you'd expect them to resolve it and take care of it free of charge. Right? Wrong. They went through their "insurance" I think and paid for a new seat skin plus the labor that they still ended up charging me $150 and in turn I'm at a loss for ever trusting this company with my vehicle in the first place. Side notes they proclaim that the tear only happened due to my "old car" and "cold weather" in my 2017 Subaru Outback. DONT TRUST THIS SHOP WITH YOUR VEHICLE, THEY WILL FIND A WAY TO RIP YOU OFF. I asked them to check out my 1984 Fiero - why was it overheating? I had already had the temp gauge swapped for brand new and no visible leaks, so it was a mystery. I left it there overnight since I work during their work hours. They must have lifted my Fiero incorrectly, ripped the radiator tube, parked (or pushed) it to the parking lot, then cleaned the parking lot - just to make it look like the rip had happened when I came to pick it up. I was devastated. I left it in their lot and called the next day. They denied that it happened in their care, of course, saying that I had dropped it off there in that condition! What a ridiculous claim - how could I have driven it there without blowing the engine! Later my husband called to tell them they should make it right, and the guy threatened that if we didn't come get it off their lot TODAY, he would have it towed away. When I showed up face-to-face, the bearded man had a totally different demeanor, apologizing that the conversation with my husband got aggressive, and apparently the owner was in Florida so he (bearded guy) wasn't authorized to "make it right." Well, I couldn't drive it home that way, and I knew it would be an ENORMOUS effort to compel them to do the right thing. So they "fixed" it by "pigtailing" the tube and charged me OVER FOUR HUNDRED DOLLARS. So now I am still devastated that they violated my car that I cherished so much and it will never be the same again. If you care about trust, consider this a warning for this establishment. read more

This is a long overdue comment. I've always been very satisfied with the level of service, honesty and quality of their work. Mechanics at Thomson's are a rare commodity and a real find. They recommend what's needed, provide a detailed explanation, charge a fair price and do quality work. I've always recommended them but haven't ever left a comment. Today they took it to another level. My 21 year old daughter has a summer job in Maine starting on Monday and she let me know this morning the ABS light was on in her car. Keep in mind the short work week due to the 4th of July and no appointment and these guys were jammed with work. I called and spoke with Bob and he said drop it off and we will work it in. They replaced the wheel bearing and found it to be defective and were able to have it covered at no charge to us. I've been around cars all of my life and these guys are the real deal. If you haven't used them do yourself a favor and try them the next time your car needs service. A very satisfied customer! read more

I recently went to the facility on Kalamazoo Ave in Kentwood for my car. I had oil pan broken and leaking. Without looking through the whole engine they said engine was busted and needed a new one. The only one they could find was a used one with 135,000 miles on it. They told me as well earliest they could look at car was the following week and the total cost was going to be $2,660. I then had it towed to another business who looked at it and said nothing was wrong with engine just need to have the oil pan replaced and fluids back in it. Ended up costing me $500. I would NEVER suggest going to this place their goal is just to put a new part in your vehicle without thoroughly checking what the problem may be In addition, their office also never calls when they say they will instead they have you call and ask what the cost will be. On top of that they only accept debit cards unless you want to pay an additional 7% for a credit card fee. I highly suggest getting a few estimates before using them. read more

I will never use them again. Poor customer service, and they are extremely slow. I am not sure how they can be so busy considering the prices they charge. The two jobs they did for me I had quoted from the Chevy dealer and they were only cheaper by 30.00. They won't get my money again. Time to find a new neighborhood shop! read more

Thompson's charged me $100 for a part that I was able to find myself for $18. Their diagnostic test was inconclusive originally, and I was forced to pay for unnecessary repairs. I VERY hesitantly authorized their repairs. Already dissatisfied, I went to pick up my car and found that they don't take checks (yet they allow credit card payment), my bill was over $1000, and they expected me to have that in cash. I spent my whole afternoon running around to pick up this car by their 6'o'clock closing time (very inconvenient) and now I have to wait to get my car until I have time to run to the bank. I have had many problems in the past with multiple cars serviced by this company. This is the last straw and I will not give them my business again. read more
