This was one of my go to places for years. Last time I went the guy at the counter talked me into the sirloin that he said he cooked himself and how amazing it was. I took his advice, it was inedible. Undercooked and super tough. My friend with me had the same experience. We both threw it away. I went back and told the guy that recommended it. All he said was 'Sorry'. I was very careful to not be ugly just simply told him that the sirloin was tough and not edible. If you're passing through the small community of Thorndale on Highway 79 and you're on the hunt for good barbecue, this place should be on your go to list. It has all the charm of an old timey country store. They do have fresh meats in their case for you to purchase along with some produce. However, their barbecue is worth stopping in for and their prices are not sky high like you find closer to Austin. I ordered the $16 two meat and two sides plate, and the portions were quite generous. They do offer both a vinegar and mayo coleslaw choice. There's plenty of seating inside, but there's about a dozen or so parking spaces. Tipping is obviously encouraged with two notable tip jars and of course that obligatory tip screen will be waiting for you should you use your credit card. Thorndale just catered our appreciation dinner and let me tell you - I have never, in my very long life, had better tasting or more tender beef! Our entire table was just flabbergasted at the fact that we could cut through this meat with a plastic fork and have it melt on our tongues! And the taste! Nothing could beat the taste. We had many Texas BBQ aficionados that admitted they'd never had anything better. There were murmurings throughout the 100+ people about how perfect and wonderful the meal they provided was. It's a market so they have lots of yummy looking meats and veggies for sale, however, they also offer a hot foods. I've had several cooked items in the past... Brisket, Sausage, a Turkey sandwich, Potato Salad, Beans... and they've all been super delish! Last Monday we stopped by during lunch time and they were offering Turkey Legs so we got one of those and a moist Brisket sandwich. The Turkey Leg was awesome. It was very well seasoned and tender. We read the story behind this place while searching for TX BBQ on our way home from the Smoky Mountains. Cool history: multi-generation family of BBQ+ gurus make'n meat to order -- had to try some. The old-time general store atmosphere and sincere TX hospitality greeted us as soon as we walked in. After Trey, the owner, came out to take a picture with me because I was a Veteran (wearing my USMC cap), he made us a gigantic BBQ brisket sandwich, a link of his favorite smoked sausage with sides of coleslaw and potato salad.. OUR LUNCH WAS FANTASTIC !!! Even the pickle. Trey graciously talked my insatiably curious wife's ear off, describing everything from the evolution of his place to a little bit of TX style local gossip. We were both immensely satisfied. After lunch, we looked over their freshly butchered meat selection and grabbed some very well marbled pieces of steak, a couple of pounds of chop meat and a heap of their highly recommended Smoked Turkey for home (I noted the prices were close to or better than HEB and the weighing system mentioned in a previous review very obviously benefitted the customer). We've since eaten everything and man, every bit of it was outstanding -- the steak melted in my mouth and had a delicious buttery, subtle aged taste; the chop meat made excellent, tender & tasty big-ole smash burgers; and thanks to our kids, the super-smoked smoked turkey was gone in a flash. Trey makes a brisket unlike any we've ever tasted. Slow smoked on post oak, it's sweet and crusty with an incredible ring. Texture is perfect. We order it from NJ or drive out of our way and extra hour when in Texas to pick up our order. Have to make room in our baggage every time. We prefer the beef burnt ends but owner Trey recommends the pork ones. Great pulled pork, too, but we stick with the brisket. Can't be beat. It's our #1. Treys family recipe is by far the best bbq we've ever had! Our 100 guests said it was the best food they had ever had at a wedding! And to top it off, Rebecca the catering manager and her staff were exceptional!! When other vendors blew it, Rebecca was the constant.... Disappointed to say the chicken wasn't cooked all the way through nor was the turkey. The dried sausage was a little too smoky for me and chewy. The bbq sauce not a fan at all. Too much garlic. I'll just say it out loud, up front: THE BEST BEEF RIBS ANYWHERE! Perfectly bbq'd with a delicious, thick bark. A real Fred Flintstone kind of rib. All I could do while eating it was to make loud "ummmm" noises. They cost $15 each, which is less than they've been charging at a lot of Austin BBQ venues. I also got the moist brisket ($16/lb) which had the same sort of bark but was not as moist as I'd like, but then I didn't get to the store until 10 minutes before close so don't know what kind of pickins were left. The fresh steak, even up to aged prime, were well marbled. I got one of those to cook at home so I can "ummm" as loudly in private as I'd like. This is actually a corner store with all kinds of convenience foods in addition to bbq items like rubs, sauces, and wood chips. They have Texas honey and pickled okra alongside the Fruity Pebbles and potato chips. My only complaint was that nothing was marked with a price so you have to ask the cashier (unless money is no object, in which case I'd like to make my next trip with you :) ). First time stopping by here with my wife. We hadn't eaten all day so were "hangry". We each got 2 meat plate with 2 sides. The pinto beans and mac n cheese were both very tasty. Brisket was good but not as much smoke as I like. I think my favorite meat was the sausage. Great texture, spice, snap. My wife really liked the sauce. I liked its flavor but think it could be a bit thicker. Staff was friendly and helpful. Pricing was reasonable for portion size. Even got some samples of turkey (delicious, moist). This is strictly a review of there beef jerky. Took a small road trip to see them to pick up some beef jerky. All they had left was one small bag. A zip lock bag. No labeling, no food safety measures, nothing. I know I should not have purchased it but I drove all that way. Than it came out to 12 bucks. The jerky was peppery which as good, but it was chewy and not dried out the way it should have been. There were also a lot of fatty pieces. Didn't finish it, threw it away. read more
