We loved camping in Thousand Trails @ Idyllwild. We spent 5 days there and left on the 4th of July, 2020. When we first arrived we saw a family leaving so we nabbed their spot. It was right near where 2 permanent residents live, nestled up to the mountains. the 2 permanent resident spots were not occupied... only their huge motorhomes were there. It was nice. We were meeting friends in 2 days and they didn't want to stay where we were staying. However, they had to for 1 night. They wanted to stay in their favorite spot by the pool. The next morning they asked the couple in that space who was vacating that day, if they could give a heads up as that was their favorite spot #417. They said sure. As my friends drove near the spot, a lady camping in tents on the mountain behind spot #417, complained loudly to the exiting neighbors, Hell No. I was going to take that spot! The couple said you never asked. So they exited and our friends drove up. This lady did NOT stay in her spot 416. She ran her power past our friends. She told our friends to not fully occupy space #417, as her car wouldn't be able to get by. Our friends said they were going to extend the slide-outs as they always had in the past. Many people wanted her space as it appeared empty. Many people, including our friends complained about her shenanigans to the front office to no avail. The manager and the other park employees gave her gentle talks daily. BIG DEAL!!! No action was taken. Due to the fact that the staff did not make her and her friends return to her spot, bugged the heck out of all of us. The view was gone. It's not even a tent site. The lady made loud noises and was trying to antagonize our friends. Staff did nothing to intervene. That is why I am giving them 4 stars and not 5. We ended up relocating to space #414 with full hookups near our friends. We loved that space. We loved the pool. We loved the little town of Idyllwild. Please note that the outdoor vendors, in town, are only there on weekends. We loved camping with our friends. We will go to this location again and hopefully there will not be drama.

Signage needing replacement

I have camped here for 5 years and it disappoints me how much the condition of the campground has diminished...and how the occupancy has diminished over that time. That being said the activities director this year (Naomi) rocks. She is truly an ambassador and wealth of knowledge of the local activities and businesses....and a delightful person. I understand that there is and has been a staffing shortage...but simple things like an overflowing sharps container in the bathroom by the pool, a light that has been flashing in the shower stalls of the bathroom by the pond for over a month, and caution tape all around the deck of the lodge and welcome center tells me that management still hasn't got their act together. My family are tent campers, but I have heard from many that the sites at this aging campground struggle to accommodate the bigger RVs today, and are not level...at all. My family loves the trees, easy hikes, Saturday kid activities, and proximity to Orange County. We were members in the past and now just pay the retail price as we don't camp quite enough to justify the annual fees. (We camp 3-5 weekends per summer).

4 stars for mountain atmosphere, larger rigs especially lower ones will have difficulty getting into a spot. Came Friday at noon which didn't help.Lots of very uneven, hilly and rutted spots. Most nice sites with fhu are leased sites. The dump station has one hose for two dumps with the threaded end cut off. Bring a long hose of your own. 70$/ night for a pool and s'mores...

We love this park! Trails for hiking galore, the small town of Idywild is so cute, fun and has so much to explore. The staff here is friendly, and the park clean and well maintained. It's not a park for big rigs over 38' but anything under can get around fine. There is limited sewer but we have not had any issues with our visits. It's pet friendly, in spring has a fishing hole.

Ask the Community - Thousand Trails

How many people per campsite?

We had 4

Anyone have pictures of the dog run?

No-but I was just there this weekend. Pretty underwhelming. It's across from the pool, next to the bathrooms

We are considering becoming members of Thousand Trails and wanted to know what has been your experience? Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

We received our membership when we purchased our rv. We have stayed at several of their sites in Southern California and have enjoyed . We are planning on renewing our membership when it expires.

Do the tent sites come with a fire pit? How does the horseback riding work? Can my almost 5 year old ride? Thanks for your time!

In the cabins, are they already stocked with plate ware, silver ware, pots/pans, coffee maker, bedding and towels? Is there an oven/BBQ? What do you recommend we bring our selves?

I have never been there but on the Thousand Trails website it says they are stocked with everything you mentioned but maybe not a BBQ but definitely has a oven and stove.

The camp sites looked nice and they have 2 restrooms, no showers though. Marion Mountain Trail to San Jacinto Peak hiked Sunday November 2, 2014 Parking: there is a dirt parking lot right across from the trail head. I drive a Mazda 6, so I was having some difficulty getting in and out of the lot. The ground is really uneven, I couldn't drive out the same way I drove in. My back tires were spinning out, so I had to go through another spot to get back to the pavement. The campground is only a quarter of a mile away and we used the restrooms before we hit the trail. Trail Head: There is a good sign stating the start of Marion Mountain Trail. You can also access this trail at the campgrounds because you have to swing that way to stay on the trail. We went up the trail head next to the dirt lot and came back down through the campground and took the paved road back to the car. The Trail: As stated before the trail first veers left towards the campground, you can spot a water tank thing to the left, you keep going up from there. As you keep going up, you pass a few things, a meadow of low plants, I'm not too sure what kind of plants they were but because it's fall they were a pretty yellow. Then you come across giant boulders on the left in which you get a clearing to see all the trees and the valley. Gorgeous views. The 1st trail Marion crisscrosses with is Seven Pines, just keep going straight. Next sign you will pass is the PCT aka Fuller Ridge Trail, go pass that as well. Next thing you will come upon is the Little Round Valley Campsite. They actually have a port-a-potty here. Definitely no toilet paper, but a cool area to look around. At Little Round Valley, a man told us it took him about an hour to get to the peak from there. We estimated it took us 1 hour and 40 min, we were slow hikers, especially with the snow and trail conditions. It says it's 1.3 miles to the peak from there. Next trail sign you cross is the 0.3 mile sign to the Peak. You know you're pretty much to the peak once you see the little house. If you have time take a look inside the house, it's pretty cool with 4 bunk beds, and extra food and water available for anyone to take left my previous hikers who brought too much supplies. From the house, you scale boulders and rocks to the peak, there's not a real direct trail or marked trail for that matter from the house. It took us 8 hours to reach the summit. Because we did this hike daylight savings weekend, and with the shorter days, we hiked the last 3 hours in the dark with head lamps. I would recommend doing this hike during the summer when days are longer. The views were definitely amazing though day after a storm with snow covered trails. Do your research before hitting the trails and be prepared! Everywhere online it says this trail is 12 miles round trip, we were at the peak the trail was 18 miles. I'm not too sure which is correct, it took us 13 hours to complete with lots of breaks in between. Loved this hike! It was absolutely beautiful!

I have some reservations about writing this review because my experience at this campground was…read morewonderful. I enjoyed four peaceful days there, and, surprisingly, there were never more than three campers present. The other visitors were all gray-haired, which contributed to the serenity--there were no barking dogs, loud generators, music, or screaming kids. I spoke with some long-time campers who advised against visiting during holiday weekends and summer; they warned that it can turn chaotic. Marion Mountain, built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s, exudes character and has a relaxed atmosphere that is not geared for partying, although some attempt to make it so. This campground strictly allows only tent camping and very small teardrop trailers or camper vans; RVs and fifth-wheelers are not permitted. The upper loop (sites 1-5) is great for van or tent camping, but parking is limited to one car/van per site, with no extra parking available. This restriction minimizes the flow of day hikers and keeps the campground tranquil. The inside loop features flatter ground for pitching tents, but it does come with close campsites, reducing privacy since the road rings around sites six through ten, which require a short walk to access. On the lower loop, the outside sites are sloped, and you also need to walk to them. The interior sites here are flat but closely packed, creating a cramped environment. I rated this campground one star for weekends and holidays, but it earns five stars on weekdays and in the shoulder seasons. I would absolutely return, but definitely not on weekends! If I want to hear screaming kids and barking dogs, I can just visit my grandkids. If you value a peaceful camping experience, choose your timing wisely!
