The campground is small, about 50 spaces. But the campground was clean, neat, and easy to walk around. No fires are allowed at this time Aug 2025. There are little paths that lead to bigger paths and walking trails. There was 1 trail that is about a 1 mile loop and it leads to incredible views of the surrounding mountains and area. The price is reasonable. Some of the spots are pretty large, and not on top of other spots. There are some that have some vegetation in between to give a little semblance of separation. Quiet hours were 10 pm and everyone was pretty respectful of it. There are pit toilets, no soap, no running water in the bathrooms. The are some water spouts scattered around in between campsites so you can wash your hands and dishes. Not as large as some of the other sites in the area, but it was good and worth it. read more

A very nice campground with clean bathrooms, spacious campsites. Picnic tables and fire pits. Even though we were not allowed to make any kind of fire. Not even for bbq. Safety reasons. We loved our stay here. Close to the lake , the town of Idyllwild and hiking trails. A gas station was nearby in case we needed something. The park rangers were very nice and friendly. We had an amazing experience at Stone Creek Campground. Our campground was fairly clean when we arrived and the bathrooms were also really clean considering the amount of people that were around. We were also in walking distance of other restrooms and water faucets. The campgrounds are in close proximity so sometimes you're able to hear other groups depending on how loud they can get; however, the campground had a 10pm no noise policy so that was nice to have. Each campground has a grill to use and a picnic table as well. Overall, 10/10 experience and can't wait to go back! read more

As a regular camper, I appreciate straightforward campgrounds, and Stone Creek delivers. It's clean and surrounded by plenty of nature. The drive is easy, and there are nearby lakes and trails perfect for hiking or enjoying a day by the water. The nearby city adds a nice touch for exploration. The bathrooms are generally clean, though there are no showers on-site. If you need a shower, the Idylwild campground is just a 10-minute drive away. I'd definitely return, but like others have mentioned, the fire restrictions due to warnings do take away from the overall experience. read more

Loved this campground! Our campsite (#49) didn't offer any shade but thankfully our immediate neighbors weren't there the same nights as us so we stole their shade during the days. We fit 2 cars and 2 tents comfortably. Bathrooms always had TP. Nice quick hike nearby was cool for sunset. Going into Idyllwild was a very fun escape from the heat for the day. While this campground was beautiful it was one of the most unenjoyable campground I've stayed at. We stayed on campsite #49 and it was a pretty bad one. It's out in the open and basically shared with another campsite. Usually there's some barriers like bushes or trees or rocks, but our tent was literally 5 feet away from the other campsites car. And our picnic table was 15 ft from theirs. It was way to close and no privacy. Better to book the campsites in the other ring. The quiet hours were totally not enforced. We stayed here to hike Mount San Jacinto early morning and had one of the worst sleeps. Two campsites down, the campers partied until 2am. Like partied. Drinking games, shouting, partying until 2am. Then babies and kids screaming in the middle of the night. And also the campground was close to the roads, so you would hear loud cars and mufflers go by in the wee hours of the night. Oh and we heard a gun shot around 3am. Crazy. I wish the ranger would have come around after midnight to shut those inconsiderate people up. read more

Came up mid week and met Chip, the very friendly and helpful host. Camped in Site 23... Spacious and comfortable... No neighbors on either side my whole visit, which was even better. Hiking trails right off the campground and a quiet relaxing stay! It would've been nice to have electricity/showers, but I wouldn't trade that for the quiet serene visit I had! Stone Creek Campground - Site 21. - Campgrounds Near Me - Banning, California

I'm an avid fan of Stone Creek Campground which is located inside the Mount San Jacinto State Park. It's not perfect for everyone, but it is for me and my family. It is 6 miles north of Idyllwild on Highway 243. I'm not sure what this road is like south of Idyllwild, but from Banning it is mostly two-lanes of winds and curves. (Some turnouts are available for slower vehicles.) If you've never been to the area, you're missing out. This is not the only campground available, but if you're into dry camping a few days this is a great option. It's only an approximately 2-hour drive from L.A. area. The air is refreshing. When I'm here, I'm once again captivated by the starry sky. PROS - tents or trailers up to 24' allowed - vault toilets (restocked with toilet paper and cleaned by a ranger at around 11 each morn.) - leashed dogs allowed - water faucets - rings with grills for campfires, picnic table & in some cases parking for an extra vehicle - open mid-May through mid-September - recycle cans and trash cans throughout - nature trails nearby - some sites are accessible for disabled persons CONS - some sites are just plain terrible with slopes and being way too close to other sites - no showers on site (however Idyllwild has them if you just can't wait...) TEMPS Dress in layers. I still have screenshots saved on my computer from 2016 when we camped for a few days in late May. At around 7:30 a.m. it was 43°F. It didn't ever reach 60°F during the peak heat times. At 4:30 p.m. it was 52°F. This year in May (2017) it was much warmer. At midnight, it was 50°F. At around 6:30 a.m. it was 57°F. And throughout the hottest time of the day, it almost reached 80°F during our 3-day stay. Was an awesome campground but gave a 3 star rating because it's in CA....so forget about ever having a campfire here. Like ever. Each time we've camped here over the past 3 years, campfires are prohibited at the campsites due to wildfire risk. They need to just remove the fire pits permanently and take them off the campground amenities listing. Because it's lame to find out after you arrive that you can't have a campfire. read more

I generally try to book Campsite #49 due to its spaciousness and access to a nearby water spout. Unfortunately, two campsites over to the right is a popular one due to its large area for multiple tents. I've had a few weekend stays where the inhabitants of this site are loud and stay up reveling into the wee hours of the morning. The camp host at the entrance to the campground is getting a good night's sleep in their motor home, and rangers don't patrol at this time. Complaining to the host the next day usually doesn't solve the problem. How people rudely ignore the general rule of low noise past 10 p.m. is beyond me. read more

Not bad camping site. We got number 30 and 32 I think right on the corner. Had so much space for tents and activities. Beware the parking is tight but there is overflow do an extra fee. One of our people had a suv tent and the spots are only enough for two cars. They sell wood on site and there is a ranger there who was kinda frank and rude to us. Besides that, bathrooms were pits and as usual bring extra toilet paper. No problems with noise during the day. My group consisted of 30-40 year olds. We ate and drank played games and some went to a nearby hike that took you to a small waterfall. Would come back again. But not in a hurry, just standard camp spot read more

Recommend staying here. The volunteer manager of the campground is new and super friendly. He was a pleasure to chat with as we checked out. There is a nature trail off the edge of the campground that was very nice. Lots of fun facts about the types of trees and pine cones in the area. Pretty views when not so hazy. We stayed in spot 3 which was away from the houses/road along the spots from 22 - 30. I don't know how busy the street is. Our spot was mostly flat. The spots along 23-25 were also flat and nice. The outhouses had plenty of supplies. Water close by as well. We'd stay there again. read more

Great spot for me and my kids. Despite record break heat, this primitive camp ground was great. Sites on the outside of the camp ground are spaced enough to be secluded, yet close enough to the primitive toilets. Water available via numerous spigots scattered around the ground. Great trail from the campground. Mosquitos were a bit much in June, but I doubt they are there year round. read more

Unfortunately, a huge group of college kids were across the road from our campsite and were extremely loud (belligerently drunk) and stayed up past midnight blasting music, yelling, etc - the camp host only collects money and does NOT do rounds at 10 pm which is supposed to be quiet hours, so if you have the misfortune of going on a night with loud, rude, obnoxious neighbors, do not prepare to have a good night's sleep. Other campers asked this group to quiet down, but they completely disregarded others. The camp host with his cute Chihuahua was very nice and helpful. He's the reason the 2 stars. But the camp ground itself is not great. There's no sinks in the bathrooms, no showers, no water hookups. Which this is how diseases are spread! So it's gross! There was 1 single water spout we saw for the whole camp ground which was no where near our site. Take care to read all details on this campground! The website was having issues so we booked by phone and were not advised of the water situation. We checked in at Mt San Jacinto campground and were told our site was 6 miles down the road at Stone Creek. Also, there are no showers at SC. We have a travel trailer and knew that we only had electric hook-up but we were not prepared for no running water in the public bathrooms at all! Only hand sanitizer. We went back to the main campground to see if we could move, but nothing was available. So we used their restrooms, which did have running water and flush toilets, but no soap.....in any of them. There was a bar of soap that someone had apparently left in one stall. The next day after hiking, we drove the 6 miles to take showers at the MSJ and all but one were out of order. We took turns using the "working" one and it never turned off! Since the ranger office was closed, we couldn't even tell anyone. We decided to leave 1 night early and were told by 2 rangers that we would be refunded. It has been 2 weeks now and no refund. I must say that all rangers and facility people we spoke to were very nice, polite and helpful. The surroundings were beautiful, quiet and peaceful when we were there, midweek. IMO, this campground should not be open during the pandemic. It is not sanitary and if soap and water cannot be provided, they shouldn't operate right now. read more

Beautiful campground and it wasn't too difficult to find. I enjoyed how each campsite was near bathroom or water spout but you still had a ton of privacy between each campsite. The weather was really pleasant due to the trees providing most of the shade for us. But something to note was that the whole weekend they were only expecting cash for anything because their system was down which was a little bit of an inconvenience for us. Spacious tent site. Great surprise that you could get hiking permits from ranger or self pay. Bathroom consists of vault toilet, toilet paper, hand sanitizer,no light. No showers. You can use the Idyllwild campground token showers which are 15 min away or so. Nowhere to dispose of gray water. Bit of a walk to fill water. It was OK. read more

This was the worst camping experience I've had in a while. My husband and I stayed here and what I didn't know is that this campground pushes up against a loop of houses. So imagine our surprise when dogs barked ALLLLLLL NIGHT. Up until 4 am. Restrooms were out of toilet paper and I read somewhere rangers would be patrolling after curfew. That didn't happen and people were loud with their music on top of the dogs. Never again read more

Background: I've been to a few campgrounds but I'm not an avid camper. The site: the sites are fairly quaint and good for maybe 2 standard sedans to fit in, especially for the center sites (in my opinion). We brought 2 4 person tents and 1 2 person tent. Standard weather for the socal area, especially the mountains. The nights are pretty cold and the days are pretty warm, especially if your tent is in the sun. Our site is pretty well kept but the dirt is soft so it's not the best for stakes. Our site had one picnic table, some have 2 or so. The size of the sites varies quite a bit but I think it's because some are for RV's. There are water spouts every so often and near site 11 there was one right there. Because Idyllwild has nicer amenities and is closer to the town with clustered campsites, it is a lot more busy, so if you're willing to sacrifice nicer restrooms with plumbing and showers for more seclusion, this campsite is probably better. Fire: $6 a bundle at the top, they last about 2.5 hours according to one of the guides. It was pine and it took a little while to finally light. FYI you're not supposed to gather tinder from nearby. Standard metal floor pit fire with a little grill. Restrooms: Pretty well kept. Pit toilets are here with a trash can at the exterior and hand sanitizer inside. Fairly sanitary especially for a pit restroom. Showers: Can be found at Idyllwild Campground (located in Mt. San Jacinto State Park). It is about a 13 minute drive from Stone Creek, and once you get there you have to buy tokens from the office. The restrooms/shower is straight ahead and there should be parking spaces right by it. The tokens are $1 each and provide about 5 to 5 and a half minutes of shower time. read more

So many mosquitoes. We went 6/15/2019 and had a blast but the bugs were intense. We spent more time in town than I wanted to because we had to get away from the mosquitoes. I don't know if it's like that year around but that part was rough. Besides that it was a beautiful campsite. The hosts were great. The toilets were clean. They sold firewood for $5/bundle. It was also just a few minutes from town and about 20 from Lake Hemet. read more

Nice quiet camp ground for the exception of barking dogs in the am on Saturday for a couple hours but then they stopped. Bathrooms were pretty decent for being a whole in the ground....however by Sunday they do begin to smell pretty bad inside. but all in all they are kept up pretty well. My buddy and I stayed at Stone Creek Campground for the first time last weekend and fell in love with the place. We are from Palm Springs and camp in Idyllwid quite often during the summer and thought we would try out a campground new to us. We had a beautiful site but realized that we had booked a tent site instead of an RV site. We were jockeying back and forth to get into the site when the transmission went out on the truck in reverse. We were completely stuck and blocking the road. Larry came to our rescue. He and his wife work there and the minute we said we're stuck, he came running. He is very knowledgeable with trucks as he is a veteran and drove trucks in the army but this one even perplexed him. He came up with the idea to just push the truck hitched to a 5000 lb. RV back into the spot and guess what, it worked. He also trimmed branches of surrounding trees to open up the site and not scratch the camper. All of the staff was extremely supportive and we cannot thank them enough. We hope to make one more trip there before the snow! read more
