We're living in a weird world currently, but this weird world allowed me to take a virtual yoga class with Three Jewels via my ClassPass account. I may not have found it otherwise. Wow...I didn't think I could fall this in love with a place I didn't even step foot in. But, I'm smitten. They have an impressive amount of livestream classes happening to build a yoga community online, and I'm now one of those community members, because I'll totally be back. To begin, Yin yoga classes are really difficult to find where I live. You can tell the difference quickly between a bad Yin teacher and a good one. Sara was excellent! Her teaching style really spoke to me. She was gentle, kind, used beautiful instruction and I could really feel her warmth. The quality of the video was solid, too. Three Jewels is a nonprofit enlightenment center through the practice of yoga, meditation, and Buddhist philosophy. According to their site, "Three Jewels serves over 5,000 students per year, offers more than 50 classes per week, and provides services to the city and internationally by giving free meditation and yoga classes to homeless families, school teachers, children, people recovering from addiction, trauma-sensitive care to refugees and earthquake survivors, and much more. It is also run almost entirely by volunteers!" The next time I'm in New York, I'm going to out of my way to ensure I make time to attend a class here. So being that this is my first time ever doing Yoga.. I just say after the class I felt at peace , refreshed and ready to start the day the teacher I had (Jennifer) was subbin for another teacher and she was amazing she walked me through and assist as much as possible . I had the chance to try a class at their new space and loved it ! Stephen, the manager is very welcome and responsive. The space is open and has a comforting scent, with an area with tables in the front and a back area to change / cubbies / bathrooms (large, clean and well stocked !) before you get to the studio itself. Class itself was wonderful - Javier introduced new poses I haven't tried before, plus gave great hands on adjustments that helped me stretch deeper than I have before. The studio space in the back is the womb where many different programs and classes are offered - Dharma/Philosophy classes, Lectures, Yoga, Pranayama, Asana, and Meditation. It's a beautiful white and bright space of illumination. There are all new yoga mats, meditation cushions, bolsters, cork blocks and straps for all students to use. They offer a great monthly membership deal where certain classes and programs are free or are discounted. Definitely worth the investment in your mind, body and spirit! The number one place in NYC to access authentic Buddhist dharma, taught in a way that is un-intimidating and accessible, even if you're entirely new to Buddhist. I can't write accurately how important and life changing this space has been, because it would probably seem too good to be true. I have found community and purpose at Three Jewels in a way that I never was able to fund anywhere else. I have met some of my most valued friends here. I met valuable teachers and practitioners here. And I volunteered here for 6 or 7 years before accepting a position here. I absolutely can NOT recommend the space more. You can learn Buddhist dharma, and yoga that is not neutered from it's gorgeous spiritual heritage and culture. Meditation that is steeped in the Buddhist lineage from His Holiness. My review is long overdue for this amazing yoga studio. I was in New York for a few months this past winter and Three Jewels was my haven for grounding and clearing my mind and body of the city stress. The teachers are caring and the practices varied. There is something for every state of mind and level. The studio is small and intimate but not overcrowded. The staff are all very sweet and welcoming and it was always a pleasure going there, even just for a coffee or tea. It is also one of the most affordable yoga studios in the city, especially given the quality of the classes and the general atmosphere of the place. I am delighted to have chosen Three Jewels and will again next time I am in NYC and the studio has reopened. read more

I went here today for a meditation class, and decided to do a yoga class with Christine a half hour after the half hour meditation class ended.I have to say that I love the people that work here. The students that come here are kind souls. The whole place is designed in an industrial zen way. Minimalism at its best. If you want to find a safe haven that will help you to stay sane, in shape and healthy in a city as crazy and intense as New York city, then search no more. My best friend signed up for the 3 weeks unlimited package for $40,- as well while she was visiting from Europe, and she has been going every day. The Three Jewels is an oasis of peace and quiet in the middle of downtown Gotham. It changed the life of myself and many people I know. The Friday night meditation program is led by a true meditation master, a monk named Venerable Puntsok. He is the real deal and has been humbly sharing his mastery with others for about twenty years. There are many other great programs there throughout the week; yoga, acupuncture, morning meditation, and more. The Asian Classics Institute leads unparalleled Buddhist philosophy courses regularly. These are priceless. The doors of this place have been miraculously kept open for close to twenty years (almost nine at this location and another eight or so at it's previous location on 5th Street). When you consider how little it charges for programs, it is a miracle that The Three Jewels continues to remain open. Yet it does, bringing so many people together to learn the truths of the world. The Three Jewels is run on the Buddhist principal that no one should be denied learning spiritual truths because of money. For this reason The Three Jewels charges incredibly little for it's programs. Part of the magic of this place happens when you begin volunteering there and relearning the art of Seva, or selfless service. If you have a few thousand dollars or more and have been looking for a good organization to donate to, this would be the one. This little "Place of Refuge" has changed the lives of thousands. read more

The place welcomes everyone and makes no distinction of how much of can donate for the classes. I've attended a couple of meditation classes, all of them with different instructors, and they were all different an positive on their way. This is truly a 'jewel' of a community center. I wouldn't exactly call it a religious organization however I could not figure out how to properly categorize it. It is really a community center, offering guided meditation, a space for personal mediation, yoga classes, as well as a bookstore and various other classes.
