A lovely place to practice for those who live in the area! Stanton Street Yoga takes up a ground floor retail space in one of the [many] new luxury apartment buildings on the Lower East Side. The space is clean and homey, with just front lobby, a kitchen, and a single practice room in the back. But they must own several other apartments in the building, since the studio also operates a hotel (Sanctuary Guest Suites, http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g60763-d1776886-Reviews-Sanctuary_Guest_Suites-New_York_City_New_York.html). The kitchen functions as their on-site "vegetarian cafe," but during the week I visited, it had been shut down by DOH for operating without a permit. (You can still help yourself to free water and tea though.) Heavy sticky mats are free to borrow, and package members get free mat storage, which is great. No lockers, so shoes go in cubbies and you have to bring your belongings into the classroom. Remember to shut off your phones! There's only one restroom, which is inconvenient if you need to change before/after a busier class. Class variety isn't large, either - most are designated open level and the difficulty depends more on the instructor you get. I liked Kristin's classes a lot - she was very hands-on with respectful adjustments. There tended to be only 4-6 students in classes held during awkward weekday hours, but the studio seems very proactive with coupon deals, so registering online for evening classes is a good idea. On a Sunday evening Level 1 class, the room was comfortably full with around 10 mats. This is a great studio for locals, and drop-ins ($16) are accepted with no fuss. I also have to give them props for the community (i.e. donation-based) classes that take up several slots on their weekly schedule. It's great to see a yoga studio more legitimately take its community into consideration, rather than just plopping in a cursory Wednesday class taught by instructors still in training! read more

No stars. I really would have liked to have at least tried this place but was not able to. The reason? I bought an Amazon Local promotion for a block of classes at Stanton Street Yoga. The instructions on the promotion were to call the studio to reserve your space in a class. You can't do it online because you're prompted to enter your credit card information and the instructions on the Amazon promotion were very clear that you needed to call the studio to reserve space and provide them with your Amazon promotion information. I called no less than 3 TIMES and NEVER received a call back from ANYONE at the studio making it impossible for me to redeem my Amazon Local promotion. I finally had to contact Amazon Local and request a refund. Not a great way to run a business. read more

Really nice yoga studio and super friendly people. The class was lead by Dhana who is warm and informative. The class was a good balance of spirituality, calm, meditative and physically challenging. She gives instruction to ensure no matter the level you have options. The studio was clean. Stanton Street Yoga is dedicated to Bhakti Yoga. The location is ideal for the area and the studio is warm and welcoming. Paintings and mandalas decorate the walls and contributes to peaceful atmosphere. I understand from other students that the yoga classes are good and Dhyana is one of excellent instructors. I confess I have not taken yoga classes because I take classes closer to home, but I have participated in the meditation sessions which I have found worth traveling to. Dhyana conducts the meditation session and guides participants deftly through different techniques that have been handed down to help one find their way to the meditative experience. There's opportunity to share one's experiences and Dhyana is available to answer questions and discuss. These sessions are donation based. I recommend Stanton Street for the meditation sessions and I expect the Yoga classes are great. read more

Wonderful yoga studio! The lovely teachers warmly welcome students of all levels. I live in the east village and have been practicing here since they opened a couple years ago, I'm so happy to have found this gem! I took the teacher training here and it was one of the best decisions I've ever made hands down. Syama and Dhyana made it a truly magical experience. Yoga is rooted in ancient Indian spiritual traditions, so it shouldn't be a surprise that some teacher trainings like this one you feel that essence. As yoga has become popular in the west it has too often been misinterpreted as another form of flashy 'exercise' and I LOVE that this studio understands and teaches it as more than that. I appreciate that Syama and Dhyana create a very open, accepting, non-dogmatic environment in which we can deepen our practice in our own personal way. read more

For three or four years since I moved to New York, I bounced around different yoga studios searching for a community, but never found a place that felt right. A little over a year ago, I found this little gem in LES through Classpass and immediately fell in love with the studio. I took a few classes from Dhyana and loved her teaching so much that I wanted to learn more and go deeper. Her classes are not only physically challenging, but also full of wisdom and inspirations. I got a monthly Groupon right away so I could keep taking classes from all the inspiring teachers. And when I learned that they offer an 8-month yoga teacher training program, I signed up right away. The teacher training literally changed my life in so many different ways. We learned the philosophy of yoga, we learned about Ayurveda, the sister science of yoga, we learned about the anatomy behind the physical poses. We learned to connect within and with the divinity. I got to understand yoga from a more spiritual level and learned so much more than just the physical asanas I initially came for. I adapted a vegan lifestyle after the first weekend of our training. I found more clarity in my heart and mind with the guidance of my teachers Dhyana and Syama. And a year after the training, I'm serving others as a part-time yoga teacher! I found my spiritual path and started to feel the peace, compassion and love flowing through my heart. I also made so many like minded friends along the way. New York City became a warm place. I just started taking classes here and so far I love it! I bought a deal on Pulsd ($20 for unlimited classes) and honestly didn't realize how great of a deal I was getting. I assumed it was unlimited classes for one month--it's actually for three months. When does that ever happen?! My first class was an All Levels one (not too easy, not too difficult) and I definitely left feeling more relaxed and flexible than I had when I walked in. I'm used to taking classes where the instructors are doing each pose alongside you so when my teacher started walking around I felt a little iffy about it, until I realized she was re-adjusting people's poses as she walked around and making sure we were all able to keep up. I've be taken classes with the two sisters(Syama and Dhyana) that run this space for several months now! I was very upfront with them about my apprehension about getting back into yoga after some past injuries. They have been super helpful! I usually take their open level classes. I find those to give me a good balance between working on my strength and staying in touch with my breathe. They are always moving around the room to help you out if a pose is a bit complicated, and they will also stop a class to demonstrate a pose if need be! I highly recommend taking yoga here! This is truly a sanctuary in the midst of the concrete jungle. This beautiful place appeared last year and since the day it opened I couldn't get enough of the beautiful sisters who run it, Syama & Dhyana! The space is warm & ethereal and makes you feel as though you are truly doing yoga mind body & soul. Very friendly staff, beautiful studio, and a lot of positive energy. This was my first ever yoga class and it was easy to follow along, but at times I wish there was a bit more direction. This place is a gem to find in the middle of the city. The space feels fresh - well-taken care of and clearly loved by the people who work and practice here. Nearly all of the classes I've taken here are taught with an emphasis on both the meditation and a really keen awareness of what exactly your body is doing. I've been mixing it up with levels 1, 2, and all-level classes. No matter how new or seasoned you already are, the amount of attention and guidance you're given to deepening and strengthening components of your poses makes it both challenging and rewarding. The teachers I'm most familiar with: Both Dhyana and Syama teach a more inward-minded class, and it totally shows in their soft presence, and the fact that they're always glowing! Kristin's class really works and pushes every move and muscles you never think about. After 2 weeks of daily practice at this studio, I feel stronger, more peaceful, and rejuvenated! Also, there's a cafe and few tables/chairs in the space with fresh juices and a few baked goods. I didn't think that I liked yoga. For a few years even, I found a certain sense of pleasure in actively disliking it. But, bought a few classes as gifts and a few for myself so that we'd have something to do together. That was over three years ago, and I've been going ever since. It was this space, and these teachers, that changed my opinions on yoga completely. Up until Stanton Street Yoga, I had gotten the vast majority off my workouts at the gym. Nowadays, it's a mix of gym and yoga, as each provides such different benefits, both physically and mentally. My mindset has changed so much, in fact, that I just completed their 200hr yoga teacher training. It was quite the endeavor, and was definitely challenging, but is a life experience that I wouldn't change for anything. Amidst the organized chaos of the Lower East Side is this beautiful, serene and peaceful space. Stanton St Yoga is such a lovely place to be in, I would sit there everyday if I could! Upon walking in, you are greeted with a big wall print of one of the temples in Cambodia (Ta Phrom if I'm not mistaken). Walking into the studio you'll see a kitchen and informal dining space - I can only imagine the great gatherings they also offer here. The walls are also decorated with mesmerizing oil paintings of mandalas by an artist. It is beautiful and worth checking out. I did a Donation Based drop-in class today with Patrice as I'm only a visitor to the city and it was amazing. It was exactly what my mind and body needed after a weeks of traveling. Gentle yet strong, slow yet steady, Patrice is a great instructor and I enjoyed her energy and class. Plus sides it away from the New York Traffic / there is a vegetarian café as your disposal / seating area / good company / and they offer massages as well. Ok Im not done yet - for those who are a little lost, little crazy, unbalanced and have taken New York Citys lifestyle to the extremes and realized that life can be chaotic and finding time to yourself can be the most difficult task in the world then Stanton Street Yoga will be your oasis. Dhyana and Syama are the Yoga Teachers that run the studio and Lisa is the Chef that runs the Divine Dish. The three of them are a trifecta! They have brought back a spirituality that I forgot I had since living here for the past mmmm 8 years. Not only that - they are just fun to be around with. They definitely re-awaken those youthful moments of hanging out; eating homemade muffins; and being yourself. We live in the city and wear so many different hats in our lives and are constantly tune in to technology, you tend to forget to take time for yourself. Wonderful LES yoga studio. I take the Level 1 classes with Pepper on Mondays and Stacey on Wednesdays and find them to be such a lovely complement to my marathon training. Pepper's classes are a bit more mellow than Stacey's which break a sweat with more flow sequences, but both are absolutely great. You can bring your own mat or use the mats they have at the studio. Shoes go into cubbies by the bathroom. Incredibly friendly community. I would definitely recommend! read more

This is a review for Ira Ruiz, who I have gotten to know and love over the last few years that I've been practicing at Stanton Street Yoga and The Bhakti Center. In a city (and world) saturated with yoga teachers, Ira is a true teacher who lives and breathes the Bhakti yoga tradition, both on and off the mat. Her teaching style is grounded in a deep well of ancient wisdom, digested through her lived experience, and shared with humility, humor and authenticity. And in my experience, practicing yoga on and off for 20 years in different corners of the world, that is a rare and beautiful thing. From the minute you walk into a class with Ira, you are drawn into a warm and friendly space that is instantly calming, no matter how shitty your day has been. It's like a big hug from an old friend. Ira embodies a genuine mood of service and creates a sense of community such that every student feels a sense of belonging, no matter what their level of experience. Throughout the class, she leads us through creative sequences that open up the mind, body and heart space. My physical practice has flourished under Ira's guidance, particularly when it comes to alignment and breath work, and she's given me the confidence to constantly challenge myself. This is because I trust her knowledge and feel safe in her hands, and because she encourages a sense of playfulness and curiosity.
