My grandma (and my 4 year old son's GREAT grandma!) lives here. She is 104 years old and lived on…read moreher own (after out-living 2 husbands whom she adored) until about 99. She was fiercely reluctant to leave her solitude and "stuff"...but I feel she is in a good place, with good people and surrounded by other seniors - some of whom she relates to, others maybe not so much (she is a tough cookie). Being a retired teacher and very involved in politics, environment, juvenile rehabilitation (amongst many other things that make me feel slightly unworthy...LOL as she is one to look up to!) it was hard for her to accept the reality of her life. I live in SF, CA. I grew up until age 7 in Michigan, spending summers in Ohio with my mom and grandma, sometimes my older brother too. My grandma taught me many things. I lived in the moment with her, picking berries as we floated down the river by her home on a canoe, to later make pie. We played piano, did ballet, wrote letters, cooked many meals, told endless stories. She taught me how to sew, how to make an entire outfit. I could go on and on about this amazing lady but this review is about Sunrise, right? Well, I have been here once. I plan to go back in the next few months. The 1st time I went, my son was 2 - now he is 4. The place is clean, well staffed and has upbeat lively old time music playing in the background (think "somewhere over the rainbow!"). I was worried about seeing my dear grandma in a "home." She took care of her parents, avoiding nursing homes for as long as possible. She took care of her ailing husbands in the same regard. So, to have to see her in a place that she worked to avoid putting those she loved....was hard. Sunrise helped alleviate this anguish with me. The people were warm, engaging and helpful. While I was there, I did not see too much interaction with my grandma. This worried me. It made me wonder how she was treated while I was not there. They would abruptly enter her room, do what they needed to do and then leave. I removed a star because I would have liked to see more warmth and engagement. I will be back soon and will observe any updates and report. But I can say, if you are considering an assisted living situation for someone you love - this is a place to consider. They do a good job here.

I asked on a Palatine Facebook page if anyone knew how to find a place and I was directed to this service. Upon getting in contact with them, they were kind and compassionate during such an awful time in our lives. They provided me with five top notch places to look into. They followed up even after we secured a place. I would highly recommend this service to anyone that needs some assistance in locating a facility like this. Thank God for a service like this.

Just this week, Jim, one of the Activity Directors, was fired suddenly, after three years of providing great service to the residents. Food is awful, and lacks choices or quality. Have a special diet? Too bad. Eat what they make-- and pay $400/month for it! Mom needs low sodium and asked for alternatives for breakfast. She was told that she should just eat the sausage. Ummm....no. She cannot. Please do not treat her like an incompetent child. She is fully aware of what she can and cannot eat! But the most egregious?? Try having no way for the EMT's to access an apartment after hours. My mom fell and hit her head. She couldn't open the door. They had to break the lock to get in! And five months later, the lock is still broken. Still not convinced to stay away? This week, they drove my mom to Sherman Hospital for an appointment she had there. The bus never returned. My mom called me, saying she'd been waiting over 2 hours. My mom, who is 87 years old, was told they were coming and they never came. I called to find out when she could expect the bus and was told, 'oh, I thought she was home'. They had *no idea* that my mom was left behind. I had to go and get her and bring her back. Needless to say, she is moving to Clarendale at the end of this month. Do yourselves a favor and stay away from this den of incompetence and disregard. oh, and the other review that mentions the wonderful Director, Brian? he lasted about 6 weeks.

He took us to the desired apts, allowing us to " get a feel" for the size and style, layout while also answering all questions , ( trust me there were a lot ). As we were looking at the different floor plans, he was also talking and showing us all of the amenities throughout the community. We ended up at the main restaurant, where he invited us to return and enjoy breakfast ,lunch, or dinner, , further getting a feel for what goes on, and resident interaction. After we completed the tour, we asked for a few minutes to sit and chat, but also observe how some of the other residents interact daily. We were very pleased, with the looks, the tour, and also with Brian's patient and knowledge, and the "No Pressure" attitude. My mom said she felt good about everything!! We agreed to return the next day with my son so he could see and get a feel for the community where she would be staying. He agreed, it was comfortable and the right place for grandma. After having a little discussion, we all agreed and signed the lease. What a wonderful experience for mom, as well as myself, and even my son.
