I am a volunteer who has been visiting several residents of Crystal Pines for years. I visit 1-2…read moretimes each week, and over the years, I have noticed how dedicated and caring the staff is of each and every resident. I have noticed the aides and nurses having a good rapport with their patients. I have noticed that all the rooms I visit are clean. I love how the bird feeders outside some of the residents' windows are filled with feed to the delight of the watching residents (as well as the birds!) There are all kinds of activities, parties, and games and outside entertainment planned for the residents--something for everyone. The staff makes sure every resident who wants to participate is included. The Crystal Pines staff, from this volunteer's eyes, is a caring, incredibly dedicated group of people. Their hearts are in their jobs and their love for the residents, who they see as family, is crystal clear.

I spent many hours keeping Mom company in her room, and every single interaction I overheard between staff and residents was kind, gentle and respectful. Just this week, Jim, one of the Activity Directors, was fired suddenly, after three years of providing great service to the residents. Food is awful, and lacks choices or quality. Have a special diet? Too bad. Eat what they make-- and pay $400/month for it! Mom needs low sodium and asked for alternatives for breakfast. She was told that she should just eat the sausage. Ummm....no. She cannot. Please do not treat her like an incompetent child. She is fully aware of what she can and cannot eat! But the most egregious?? Try having no way for the EMT's to access an apartment after hours. My mom fell and hit her head. She couldn't open the door. They had to break the lock to get in! And five months later, the lock is still broken. Still not convinced to stay away? This week, they drove my mom to Sherman Hospital for an appointment she had there. The bus never returned. My mom called me, saying she'd been waiting over 2 hours. My mom, who is 87 years old, was told they were coming and they never came. I called to find out when she could expect the bus and was told, 'oh, I thought she was home'. They had *no idea* that my mom was left behind. I had to go and get her and bring her back. Needless to say, she is moving to Clarendale at the end of this month. Do yourselves a favor and stay away from this den of incompetence and disregard. oh, and the other review that mentions the wonderful Director, Brian? he lasted about 6 weeks.

1 review 7 minutes…read moreago NEW What a great experience ! It started as we were greeted when we walked in the door. Brian is very knowledgeable about The Oaks. He took us to the desired apts, allowing us to " get a feel" for the size and style, layout while also answering all questions , ( trust me there were a lot ). As we were looking at the different floor plans, he was also talking and showing us all of the amenities throughout the community. We ended up at the main restaurant, where he invited us to return and enjoy breakfast ,lunch, or dinner, , further getting a feel for what goes on, and resident interaction.After we completed the tour, we asked for a few minutes to sit and chat, but also observe how some of the other residents interact daily. We were very pleased, with the looks, the tour, and also with Brian's patient and knowledge, and the "No Pressure" attitude. My mom said she felt good about everything!! We agreed to return the next day with my son so he could see and get a feel for the community where she would be staying. He agreed, it was comfortable and the right place for grandma. After having a little discussion, we all agreed and signed the lease. What a wonderful experience for mom, as well as myself, and even my son.

We were excited to move mom into her unit in October, but moved out about 3 months later for…read morevarious reasons. Mom had a 2 bathroom unit with a washer and dryer and was living independently. When we viewed the unit, the closet doors were painted shut (more on that later). We were told that would be fixed. When we went to check the unit before move in, the closet doors were still painted shut. When we moved in, the closet was fine but there were other issues with the condition of unit that did not meet our expectations. The washer/dryer was not hooked up. There was a piece unconnected and looked as if an animal had been living in there. We did not realize at the time that neither showed worked. The bathroom off her bedroom had an arm bar for support at the toilet, however the shower temperature could not be adjusted for comfort. It was too cold or scalding hot. When my mom moved out months later, this issue had still not been resolved. The second bathroom the shower head was broken. It took about 30 days before it was fixed. So 30 days before mom could take a comfortable shower. Not acceptable! This bathroom had no arm bar for toilet and was difficult for her to use the toilet without support. More on this later. In our experience, the maintenance people were nice, but there was no attempt to bring in someone else when they were not able to fix things. Painting doors shut is not the work of someone with experience. We also purchased a new toilet paper holder as the one provided was extremely difficult for even me, and my brother in law, and certainly not appropriate for an older person. The meal times were also an issue. Dinner was 4-5:30 but residents were able to come early and were able to eat dinner at 3:45. Mom would come down at 5:15 and the staff was already putting things away so the full menu was not available and they would run out of items, sometimes even vegetables. We felt that the management was not reactive and did not handle her situation with any urgency. In December I expressed what was going on with management. Mom was unhappy and was considering moving out, there was no arm bar in the one bathroom making her life more difficult. No action was taken. There was also no suggestion that putting an arm bar in the bathroom was even a possibility. I didn't realize until mid January when she was moving out that they could have installed an arm bar for her. At this point she was moving out in a week, and mom did not want to incur this expense since she was moving out. The lack of preparing her unit to be fully functioning, the shutting down of the dining room so early, the inability of things to get fixed, and the lack of concern by the staff resulted in a terrible experience resulting in much time and expense for her, and difficulty in managing her daily life activities. In the end she was glad she moved out as she was miserable living there. I don't like to post negative reviews. The people we met were very nice. But it did not meet our expectations and there was no accountability or follow up when they received feedback.

They were friendly. My grandma looked like she had been bathed and hair brushed. When I would talk to my grandma with questions about things they would come over on their own an answer my question. I didn't even have to ask. They adhered to her diet restrictions. I only had one complaint and they addressed it before I was even able to complain and it didn't happen again. They had private showers in their room. The bathroom was kept clean. She had her own room. All the other patients were lovely. ( Except for a grumpy guy but that's not their fault )If we are in this situation again I would definitely choose to send her here vs Waconda care. Hope this helps.
