My mother was in home hospice for 3 weeks. She received twice a week visits from primary RN Rachel and her CNA Emma. My mom was at a nursing home, journey was the hospice company. I arrived Tuesday from out of town as my mom was about to pass. Hospice nurse popped in for literally 4 minutes. We went Wednesday and nursing home said she was already there. We went first thing in the morning Thursday so we would be there. She never showed up. Nursing home kept calling her and they kept saying she was "en route." After 2 more hours of waiting, we had to leave at 8pm. My mom is getting ready to pass in next few hours most likely. But we won't know her actual condition because hospice never showed. Horrible. read more

Very nice facility in a small and quiet area, that keeps the family in mind as much as the patients (places to sleep, outdoor garden area and seating room, fridge available) The nurse and CNA teams were incredible, from weekday and weekend day/night shifts. Our family member was kept clean and comfortable with dignity at front of mind. [[HIGHLIGHT]]We shared feedback regarding the weekend doctors communication being highly misleading/confusing for our family, due to coming in so early, saying so little, and focusing on what he thought we wanted to hear instead of what we needed to know (what's best for the patient).[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The other challenge we faced was related to the Home care side of the business systems not talking to the in-facility side of the business, so we had to repeat information such as funeral home. I have been a volunteer with JourneyCare for over 10 years, and even though I have moved out of their service areas, I continue to support this wonderful care organization remotely. I have met the kindest staff in many different locations, most recently at retirement communities in Crystal Lake and Algonquin. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The staff at these locations show true dedication and kindness toward all residents, regardless of their abilities.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] And I enjoy visiting these places and seeing the good care our seniors are getting from JourneyCare staff. JourneyCare has a wide range of activities and services which make sure all needs are met. Caring for patients in facilities, at home or in the Care Centers always puts the patient and their families first. I make calls to hospice families each week to check in and make sure JourneyCare is not missing anything, or just to check that the caregivers don't have any concerns or questions that need answering. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The many people I speak with each week often thank me for the check-in and praise the nurses, doctors, chaplains, Social Workers, and all staff who take care of their loved ones.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I had the choice of leaving JourneyCare volunteering when I moved out of state, but I chose to continue in a remote position, and returning in person when possible. At home support was sufficient. We never made it to the hospice home and maybe that's where the 5 star reviews come from. We had a nurse in visiting weekly, the 24/7 number was always helpful. My mom passed and we didn't hear from the company. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The nurse taking care of her week over week or the social worker who was helping out - radio silence.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]Not even a courtesy condolence.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] It was like we lost all support when she passed. My experience with JourneyCare Hospice (405 Lake Zurich Rd, Barrington, IL 60010) was heartbreaking. The care my mother received in her final days was unacceptable. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The night of Nov 4, 2025, I called multiple times about her worsening condition. The on-call nurse only told me to increase her morphine.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The next morning (Nov 5), the day nurse arrived late, couldn't operate the oxygen machines, and even placed a mask over my mother's mouth with no oxygen running. She then left the house at the critical moment -- while my mom was dying. They promised to keep her comfortable and help her transition peacefully. Instead, they caused her so much distress and misery. My mother passed away shortly after. No family should have to experience this. read more

My mom was in hospice with Journey Care of Barrington. She received her hospice care from Journey Care while she stayed at the Village at Victory Lakes in Lindenhurst in early 2026 for combined nursing/hospice care. [[HIGHLIGHT]]All of the Journey Care staff whom we met were kind, empathetic, warm, and caring to my mom and to us. They treated her (and us) gently and sweetly[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]. My husband and/or I were there in the room with my mom approximately 16 to 18 hours each day, so we were able to observe them a lot. I didn't worry at all when they were checking on her, tweaking the care plan for her, and actually providing care for her. Nurse Kate was phenomenal. She made sure that my mom was not in distress or feeling scared or anxious. Calm, peaceful, and comfortable were our goals, and with Kate's guidance, that is what we achieved for my mom. Update: I spoke to several people. I believe it has been escalated, but not sure. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The next few people were great.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Unfortunately my dad now has a small friction wound from sitting so long. It is was immediately addressed. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I just put my dad in hospice with Journey Care. I wish I had read the reviews rather than just take the advice of a nurse friend. So absolutely let down.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I was told by the nurse his bed would be here between 8-10am. At 10:30, I called equipment company. It hasn't even been approved by nurses manager. By the time they sorted it out, I'm promised delivery by 3PM! I had moved my dad to a recliner and threw out his mattress. Yesterday, same nurse gave him a suppository and left. I can't even tell you want a disaster that was. Her recommendation was a total mess. [[HIGHLIGHT]]My dad is in pain in the recliner. I'm completely stressed and we still don't have a bed and it's 2pm.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]I've talked to everybody and let them know. I'm sure this review will not be a surprise. When I started with JourneyCare I was told they had been purchased by Addus HomeCare. After being through many acquisitions myself I should have known better. The CNAs and nurses that come to the house are excellent. However, the office staff are horrible. My mother fell the other night and the 24/7 emergency line never picked up. They were supposed to help me find a nursing home for my mother but the woman I worked with couldn't even tell me what type of home she would need, Skilled, memory care, etc. But she told me I had to find someplace quick. She did give me three homes to tour I called them first and they would not take my mom because she is bedridden. This woman had no clue what she was doing and was extremely rude. I wish I could change companies now but I am too far in, definitely interview a couple places before you choose hospice care. read more

The care my husband received from Journeycare in our home was amazing. From his nurse Hailey and his CNA Francis, they both were so kind and compassionate. Everyone was just a phone call away or when needed they came out to our home more then with just a call. Pastor Tim was so gracious. He helped me with words that were very calming. Our social worker Donna was tremendous help about what we needed and had the answer for all my questions. Horrible care, bordering on malpractice. After release from the hospital in May of 2019 for Small Fiber Neuropathy, I was given the name of Journey Care as a palliative center that could continue to manage my pain medication. I had experience with their predecessor, NW Pain Management. I should have known something was fishy from the jump when it took them over 2 months to make their first home visit. I disregarded the warnings of at least one renowned physician at Rush University to stay away from JourneyCare. Since they were already providing me "care", I decided to stay with them after they finally made it to my house in late July. From the first visit, it was obvious that the nurse had no idea what she was doing. She talked about medical marijuana on her first visit, and assured us she would take care of everything. Then on the second visit, made it seem like that was an impossibility and we were no longer considering MMJ as an opiate alternative. I was fine with that, as long as they would not leave me high and dry regarding my opiate prescription. Well, I spent all of September and October calling the Journey Care office, trying to get my next follow up visit scheduled. Time after time, I called and left messages. I needed an appointment, and more importantly I needed my refills. For two months, they called in my dilaudid prescription without so much as calling me to see what shape I was in. No appointment scheduled, no follow up phone calls. Nothing. I would text my APN and the pills would show up at the pharmacy. Definitely nothing shady there. Then, the coup de gras. I get a certified letter delivered to my house on Saturday morning. They are dropping me as a patient. Because ... wait for it... I live too far from their offices. All of the times I had called, all of the messages I had left, and not one person had the BALLS to call me and have a discussion with me about this. There was no continuation of care provided, no referral to another clinic in the area, no nothing. Just a letter and a bunch of empty words. If you come across this company in your search for in-home palliative care DO NOT employ them, lest you want to end up unwillingly withdrawing from opiates with absolutely no assistance from these folks who claim to be medical professionals. Malpractice? Yes, indeed. I will be pursuing that route. I hope you avoid this place at all costs. read more

As a registered critical care nurse, I have never seen such low professional standards when caring for a patient. My mother's doctor sent the order for hospice at 9:30 am. No intake nurse was available until 4:30pm. The nurse was present for 20 minutes at best. No instructions given on anything. Did not receive pain medication until 1:30 am when it was delivered after me calling at 10:30pm to demand it. 9 hours is too long for a hospice patient to wait for pain relief. Being an experienced nurse, I was able to medicate my mom with what she had until the meds came. If I wasn't, my mother would have suffered more than she already was. By 8 am the next day we still had no hospital bed and I switched my mother's care to another hospice. read more

My mom was diagnosed with metastatic lung cancer that spread to her bones and spine and was put on palliative hospice. At first I was very sceptical about going with this company because I have read some bad reviews but did move forward with them. We did have her on it for a week at home until she had to go to their facility on February 29th in Barrington. I was very pleased with the care that the staff had done for her. They let me know what was going on every step of the way. Tonya one of the nurses was amazing and so outgoing, warm, etc. She comfort me when my mom was getting ready to pass as well as after. My aunt was released into their horrible care and not only did they not send her the equipment she was supposed to have, someone named Jennifer showed up the next day to order the family to not give her any food or drink, nor to let her get out of bed. She passed away on October 1st, 2019 after 5 days of pure torture. If you truly love your family member, Do Not use Journey care! read more

I am so very disappointed in this company. He tried to set up my husband with palliative care. He has MDS, which is a form of cancer. Got insurance approval, and setup the first phone call. Apparently, he isn't dying fast enough, because he was denied....really?? He really needs pain mgmt., regular blood counts , etc. And he is suffering from crippling fatigue, it is really difficult to get him to dr. appointments. He has been in palliative care, but we were not happy with their care. Make sure you are dying fast if you go with JourneyCare....... read more

When Journeycare visited my mom at her residence I was very happy with the nurse they sent to help. She was supportive to my mom and me. My comments have nothing to do with her. However, when my mom was transferred to their in patient facility in Barrington, the experience was not good. EXCEPT the the nurses - they were great. The doctor and social worker that visited my mom when I was there- well, I won't be forgetting that experience anytime soon. My Mom was still conscious, yet they were asking me what funeral home we should use. Shame on the social worker! When I asked the doctor if we could speak outside of my mom's room (she could hear) I was told that she wanted her patients involved. Seriously? My mom was a "chart" to her. I knew my mom for 67 years and was her power of attorney. I knew my mom. I didn't need to be chastised about wanting to speak outside. My Mom was scared - let's take it outside, doctor. I will always regret speaking in front of her. The next day - her last day - my Mom was not responding and no visit from anyone that day. Just those kind nurses stepping in and out. No chaplain, no social worker, no doctor, nothing. I have been with other family members in other hospice facilities - this was not good. I feel I have to write this review about Journey Care in Barrington . My father was here for eight days , I have been around other nursing facilities and never in my life have I seen an entire staff, more compassionate, and skilled . They truly got to know him and knew just how to care for him , they brushed his hair and trimmed his mustache, cleaned his hand fingernails everyday during bathing . Made sure his room was perfect and his bedding was always fresh and clean. He had a room with a beautiful view, and they would always open the shades to the windows and his French doors , they played jazz music everyday because he said that's what he liked . When were weren't there, they kept in contact with my mother and I to keep us updated on his condition and his pain levels . Everyone in that entire building was so accommodating no matter what you asked for or needed . They were all very graceful and loving towards my father , while he was still able to speak, and hold a conversation, they would sit in there with him sometimes and just talk and laugh with him, he would joke with them, and praised them on how well he felt they were taking care of him. He's even told us when we would walk in he would say "man these girls are great, they are taking such good care of me ". I knew that when I left, he was in great hands and I trusted them. My dad was at Journey care at Rush Hospital for the afternoon prior to me having him transferred to Barrington, and it just isn't the same. The level of care far exceeds any expectations of a hospice facility. This isn't just a job to them. This is people truly caring for and taking care of people as if they were their own family. The nurses are truly more amazing than you could ever imagine. When the dreadful time came, they gave us our private time with my dad, while we waited for funeral service to show up, they played amazing Grace and Laid a flag over him as we all walked out with my dad. He was a Marine. I write this on behalf of my family and of my dad, who would absolutely say the same if given the opportunity. My dad is currently in JourneyCare and I would love to get him out of here. Their hospice coordinators have all said different stories about how my dad's last days would be like and now the story has changed again once he got re-routed from the Barrington to Arlington Heights facility. We were told that we needed to get him to a hospice and out of the hospital so they could better manage his pain as he goes to heaven. Instead, he is in a holding space in AH and we're told that once his pain is managed correctly, he'll be eligible to transfer somewhere else.... WHICH WASNT TOLD TO US IN THE AGREEMENT. I don't want to trash them as a whole because they are some very nice people, but more or less the communication has been horrendous and they've painted a false picture of what things should be and what will happen. We have been passed off from person to person and nobody defends what the other person says. All the while, my hands are tied right now and I can't do anything to fix the situation while my dad doesn't go out with dignity. In fact, he is in grave condition and they're just worried about getting the meds straightened. There is a systematic error in the communication from what I signed up for to what we are receiving. Don't deal with them or let them sweet talk you, taking advantage of your emotions at such a critical time. We thought he'd spend his last days at Barrington and now it might be at a separate nursing home or better yet, at home, which we didn't have want. BAD, BAD, BAD. read more

I am so glad she was my Mom's nurse. The only downside to JourneyCare was the social worker department was lacking. The social worker did not communicate with me at all. From the first meeting with a care cooridnator to the last time we walked through the doors when my father passed, we were treated like family. Every nurse, doctor, social worker and employee was exceptional. The amount of compassion and care that they gave my father was amazing. He was there for 10 days. They allowed us to be there with him all day. They answered every question we had and did their very best to spread their knowledge to us. They let us know what end of life signs to look for and reassured us that his comfort was of their utmost concern. I would hope that if anyone needs to be in hospice care, they get to be in a facility like this. I cant thank them enough for everything they did for not just my Dad, but for all of us that were there with him for those 10 days. Today my great Aunt Linda passed away, such an amazing woman. Her last few days were spent at Journey Care and my family couldn't have chosen a better place for her. My grandma, Linda's older sister, was blessed to make it for her passing this afternoon. The staff was amazing, providing a beautiful send off, playing a song of our families choice. They were immaculate, even at the end, giving a standing ovation for Linda. One nurse who was so kind to my grandma gave her a big hug, I hope she wasn't offended at all by my grandmas kiss. When they went outside, she gave my grandma another hug. I can't thank you enough for providing a beautiful send off filled with so much compassion, I appreciate it so much. read more

This organization does not even deserve 1 star although I'm unfortunately obligated to give it that. On the day my grandmother entered hospice care with these morons, they failed to A) send us any medications for her pain and B) send a nurse out for an initial visit -- we requested these things at 11AM, and no one showed up until 6:30PM-- and this was after we reminded them! 24/7 care, my butt. On top of that, we had the most incompetent, disrespectful, unprofessional nurse I have ever encountered, come to our home. I myself am a nurse, and I know bedside manner. This man did not greet anyone, did not introduce himself, did not even acknowledge my grandmother as a human being. He just walked up to her bed and started touching her without any regard, feeling for pulses and listening with his stethoscope. He couldn't even get a proper set of vitals - I had to end up getting them for him! Furthermore, he explained absolutely NOTHING that was going on to the rest of my family, as she was not doing well. Finally, he was feeling for her pulses, and all he said was, "oh, they're gone. She's gone." Then proceeded to walk away to our kitchen, calls his manager, and say "hi, you're going to have to change my call to a death call" and literally chuckled. He laughed! After that, the nurse walked over to my 87 year old grandfather, who is hard of hearing, and still had no clue that my grandmother had just passed right in front of his eyes, and shakes his hand, saying I am sorry for your loss, sir. I was the one who rechecked her pulses, listened for a heartbeat, and had to tell my grandfather that she was truly gone. I was the one that cleaned her up and did all post mortem care, again with no help or regard from this useless nurse that came from Journeycare. I am mortified. I am horrified that this was the experience that we had in the final moments of my grandmother's life, and that this horrible man was in our home. Please, if you care for your family members, absolutely do not even waste your time with this careless and unprofessional company. I'm sorry for anyone else who has had to experience such disrespect and complete lack of empathy for end of life care. read more

My experience: Pros: The "line" people seem very dedicated. I have little doubt that my mother received kind and loving care. Cons: There are an incredible number of personnel involved, and no one person seems to stand out as the "assigned" manager. Consequently, when I gave one person the name of the funeral home which was to pick up my mother's remains, that information was never entered in a central source. Consequently, when my mother died, someone else called a funeral home which I had told one contact we were no longer using which had been entered in her files year ago.My mother's body was picked up by the wrong funeral home. I then had to call that funeral home, explain the mistake, and call the right funeral home. Not something you should be 1) dealing with at the time of your mother's death and 2) should have happened given that they had her updated information 6 weeks in advance. In addition, Journeycare personnel called my business line the morning of my mother's death leaving a message asking that the call be returned. Not "your mother is dying right now", just please call back. Why they would call one number, and my office number at that, and leave a nonurgent message when the circumstances were urgent is a mystery to me. I sent an e-mail to the Director of Quality of Journeycare (the name is on the website) with a recounting of my experiences. I hope that this will improve these aspects of their service. As an update, I just called Journeycare to confirm that they had received my e-mail. The person listed on the website as Director of Quality is no longer there. The receptionist was able to give me the first name of her replacement, but had to look up her last name. And, the new Director was "unavailable." A couple of hours later the new Director called and we had a long discussion. She appears to be a very concerned and well meaning person. It will be interesting to see if she can improve this organization. read more

What an awesome place... my mom was admitted at age 94 for her end of life care. I slept a few nights there during her 11 day ordeal, and the nurses, doctors, and minister couldn't have been more attentive to mom and also me. Being an only child, mom was in my entire life and it was very difficult to watch her fade away. They seemed to be as concerned about me as much as mom. The rooms are all private with a large patio door that could be used to roll the bed out into the garden, weather and patient permitting. I have never gone through this before, but I imagine it becomes common to see death on a daily basis.Many patients came in for just hours or a day and then passed. At the most difficult times of our lives, we found a peaceful place to say good bye to our mother and father. Journey Care has been a wonderful support to our family twice in the past year. Dad had dementia and stomach cancer. Mom kept him home, with 24/7 caregivers and Journey Care hospice. She was so supported. Mom was a nurse, and she valued the very knowledgeable and compassionate support for in- home care. A short 8 months later Mom had a massive stroke. Her final few days were spent at the Barrington hospice facility. The staff was supportive of the family, as well as of our mother. The facility is serene and beautiful. There are no words to describe the peace and respect the staff showed my parents when their bodies were moved to the funeral home. It was a moving and spiritual experience. End of life is a difficult time; the palliative care given at Journey Care was exactly what our mother and father requested in their end of life wishes. monday morning was 350 miles in for my final kindness toward mother. she got in shortly after noon and was made reasonably comfortable, the rest of us likewise. 16 hours later mother deceased: no sounds, no signs, no nothing. gimped out to the nurse's station to request a professional opinion and then got on with the hard parts. The staff at Journey Care was regular-courteous and polite (not merely professionally so). Tanya and the crew were helpful and attentive to family and friends but not intrusive. Patient rooms were clean, comfortable, and private with plenty of places to sit, sprawl, or collapse as necessary; pillows and blankets were available too. The park like grounds are relaxing, but probably better in spring. read more

So far I am very disappointed in there services. They did not follow my explicit pain management directions and my mom ended up in level 10 pain. This is absolutely unacceptable! This is their specialty! Shame on them! This should be criminal to leave someone dying in that kind of pain. read more

My father received end of life pain management there - and I am so happy about our choice to bring him into their care. Like any hospital facility, you know your loved one the best - so if you see something odd or have a question ask it! When I had concerns, they were answered promptly and with a full explanation. You could ask anyone, anything and they would get you what you needed. The social workers - most notably Nancy - did an amazing job of helping me with last rights and making sure dads family and friends were taken care of as much as he was. I don't know how they do this very difficult job every day with grace and dignity - but I am forever happy for their support and care they provided during this difficult time. read more

How do I begin? My beloved husband spent 42 days in the hospital over a 10 week period. When all was said and done, our children and I made the decision to enter hospice. We choose The JourneyCare Barrington facility. The only thing that limits my praise of our experience is the space provided. My beloved was cared for with love and grace from the moment he arrived. And we, his family, received the same blessing! We had 6 days, 6 full days, around the clock, to hold his hand, to talk with him, to see him laugh and to know he was surrounded by love, not just ours, but Sonya and Jackie (CNA's), Gail, Kelly, Nancy, Nancy, (Nurses) and Dr. Chris. We are so grateful. Two nights before he passed, Andre and I had a deep soulful conversation. We were able to do so because he was comfortable (not in pain) and I was at peace. There is a deep peace that touches joy, even in the midst of sadness and pain. I knew that deep peace as JourneyCare served us. Now, as my heart begins to heal, I know I will touch that joy as well.
