I didn't get a chance to fish their private waters this time, but after seeing the stretch of river that runs through the property, I definitely would next time. The spot itself rivals some of the great rivers and streams I've fished elsewhere. A beautiful setting, nice flows, and what seems like very little fishing pressure. It really feels like one of those special Colorado hideaways that's hard to find these days. Whether you're around to fish, relax, or just enjoy the scenery, Harmels is a place worth stopping for.

It's not a big place, so it was fun getting to know the others at the resort. It was great to retreat to where you have the basics, and the cluttered world just fades away.

And what a booming town this little hamlet used to be. And that is why you should tour Redstone Castle. You need to buy your tour ticket in town. Give yourself another 10 minutes to drive up to the castle, park, and get over to the castle. But it isn't really a castle. No moat. No drawbridge. No turrets or towers. It's just a big house. And considering I live in Boston Metrowest - I have friends who live in larger, more ornate, tackier houses. Most of the first floor of the house has been kept in "original" condition. But since the castle has been operated as a bed and breakfast or inn by previous owners, all of the bedrooms have been updated. No telling if there is any resemblance to the original. Also, most of the furniture is NOT the original stuff, so again not sure if any of the stuff is even period pieces. It is still cool to walk around. And imagine living there 100 years ago. It's really about the coal, not the castle.

Took a full day float trip. The guide was nice, but a bit dry. When we received the call from the…read moreguide the night before we asked if we would need waders, he simply said no, so I assumed from past experience we would be in a drift boat. When we arrived we discovered that we would be fishing from a raft and the guide informed us that we would definitely get wet and we did. I don't have a problem with getting wet, but had this been mentioned I would have worn my wet wading attire. No fault of the guide but the river was running fast. You maybe got one cast into some good, but tight, spots (maybe two if you were lucky) as you passed it quickly. I consider myself pretty adept at fly casting, but it was a real challenge to hit the moving targets as fast as we were going. In addition the river passes through a significant amount of private property, so if you hang up and break off (many of the target spots are tight along the bank) you may have to travel a significant distance without fishing before there is a spot to stop and re-rig. Later that day I spoke to another angler who had fished with a different guide that day and he explained it best, "It was like fishing from a freight train". The time on the river ended up being a little over six hours, and not the advertised eight, but the river was running pretty quick. Not sure about a return trip, but would definitely check the flows closer before doing so.
