Stopped by Harmels on the Taylor and was impressed. The folks in the shop were super friendly and welcoming. It is a great place to grab a coffee, a quick snack, and take a break. I didn't get a chance to fish their private waters this time, but after seeing the stretch of river that runs through the property, I definitely would next time. The spot itself rivals some of the great rivers and streams I've fished elsewhere. A beautiful setting, nice flows, and what seems like very little fishing pressure. It really feels like one of those special Colorado hideaways that's hard to find these days. Whether you're around to fish, relax, or just enjoy the scenery, Harmels is a place worth stopping for. read more

Went to the restaurant several times during my stay at Harmels and each time the food was exceptional. I've had the grilled chicken sandwich that was fresh, juicy, and hot from the grill. I've also had the salad bar which was incredible and kept very clean. The cheeseburgers were juicy, flavorful and also hot off the grill. The toppings were freshly cut too! Cannot complain about a thing here. The wait staff are incredibly kind and welcoming! Definitely recommend! read more

We had lunch on the deck by the river. It's beautiful with real table clothes and napkins! The hamburger and club sandwich were top notch. The club is big enough for two people if they are willing to share. Our table also had the prime rib slider and the report was it was tasty as well. Definitely would eat here again. read more

The restaurant is closed. A limited service breakfast is included. Similar to a La Quinta. The fishing at the resort has signs about every 25-30' that state "artificial flies only. The information to entice guests should clearly state the two items above. Understanding the fishing is a mute point, Being that they are remote and not near anything that we city folks expect, they need to clearly state the RESTAURANT IS CLOSED when reservations are made. Maybe they did, but it came as a surprise. It's a beautiful area and the cabins are rustic. Very Clean. Stayed in cabin #7 and more than 2 days. read more

Stayed in a 2 bdr/1ba cabin June 23-26, 2022. The cabin was clean, quaint, had a small kitchen that seemed decently supplied. 50 ft away was the Taylor River which people fished. New owners have already done a lot of upgrades and refurbishment and continue to do more. Their cafe which includes a bar was almost ready to open and their back deck with BBQ and large fire pit were open. It overlooks the river. The staff and owners seemed excellent. It's only 10-12 miles to the cut town of Crested Butte and across the street are stables where you can horseback ride ($85 for 2 hrs). Im an active adult with minimal horse experience and did the intermediate level horse ride and it was beautiful, well guided, a little challenge included, and very fun. A great price. I'd stay here again. read more

As said in other reviews. Ignore any review before Fall of 2021. Google needs to fix this. Those reviews are from previous owners. New owners have flipped this place and made it a 100 out of 100 for sure. This is an annual trip for me, and my wife. This year we came after my wife's chemo. She said she is not going to miss going to Harmels no matter what. They accommodated her perfectly, and always asked how she is. They are great all around. All of the staff. They do Ice cream Sundaes on Friday evenings, and Smores on Saturday evenings at the fire pit. There is corn hole, washers, horseshoes, and other games there. Now, why we come there, and I will every year as long as I live. I bring a UTV to ride at Taylor Park. Only 20 minutes to tow it there. More important. The fly fishing! This year has been my best to date. Private access, no crowds. Monster trout. I get to fly fish mornings and evenings, and trail ride during the day. I fish in Montana also and cannot say if I like Montana's trips more or less then Harmels. And that says a lot. Can not recommend Harmels enough. read more

This was our first time back to Harmel's since the ownership change several years ago, and it is very obvious that the new owners have invested heavily in the property to make it a top-tier destination - in short, the renovations on the cabins and the property are outstanding! The attention to detail was very strong - deferred maintenance issues addressed, cabins remodeled, office/ store area totally redone, and the deck area by the restaurant has new decking and seating options. The support staff was very capable and friendly, and we had no issues during our stay with our accommodations. This would be a 5 star review except for the restaurant seemed to be a work in progress - the breakfast buffet was hit or miss on freshness, and the evening menu choices were very limited. However, if you were staying in a cabin equipped with a kitchen, this wouldn't be an issue, but not all cabins have them. All in all, we were very pleased with the attention to the guest experience and enjoyed our stay there very much - we'll be back! read more

Fantastic stay over Memorial Day weekend at Harmels. We had fresh coffee every morning at Bucks on the Taylor followed by a delicious breakfast at the lodge. The cabins are newly remodeled and gorgeous! We were blessed with live music from Rusty Rierson and were able to find some much needed respite away from the city. We found this place by accident and SO happy we did!! Beautiful dinner overlooking the stream. The food was beyond wonderful! The staff could not have been better to us, from the front desk office to bartender to wait staff. HIGHLY RECOMMEND. This place has not been cosmetically "updated", but who cares. Our room was extremely clean. The scenery is amazing. Plenty to do!! And very reasonable rates. This place is for the down to earth, outdoor loving, adventure seeking clients. As for us oldies, it was relaxing and laid back!! Just what our goal is!! Already planning our next, longer stay next month!! read more

extremely slow. we came in after a rafting trip for lunch. there were only 2 other parties in the restaurant ahead of us and few cusyomers there in general. it took an hour to get our food. the food was fine but not worth the wait. in retrospect I would have driven back to crested butte for lunch, the service and the food is better. read more

If I could, I would give even MORE stars to Harmel's. My husband and I had our wedding at the ranch. Throughout the entire planning process we were never told "no" for any of our requests. "Could we have fried Rocky Mountain oysters for our cocktail hour?" - "No problem!" "Would it be possible to take some wedding pictures with one of the horses?" - "Of course! We'll even pretty him up for you." We felt as though the whole staff was intimately involved in our wedding and WANTED to be! For the four nights we stayed we had staff members checking on our stay, congratulating us, and telling us how excited they were for our big day. Even our friends and family that stayed constantly spoke about how welcomed and cozy they felt at the ranch. My grandmother, who came from Chicago, was not adjusting well to the high altitude. Staff members offered remedies, places to go in town to seek relief, and even the chef heated up left over chicken soup when she had gone a day without eating. Again, we always felt as though they those working were bending over backwards to help us and they were HAPPY to do it! At our ceremony the staff mingled and had fun with our guests and were even as overjoyed as our families about our big announcement of our pregnancy! By the end of the weekend, no one wanted to leave. Plans are already in the making to return soon. Harmel's made our wedding absolutely perfect and will forever be a special part of our lives and family. We will most certainly be returning in the years to come as our family grows. read more

I was first introduced to Harmel's just a few months ago and have since been back as often as possible, 3 times in total for a few days apiece. This place is a step back in time and provides an awesome escape from the hurried pace of life in denver. I have stayed in a few different cabins and they have all been clean and well equipped. The location of his place in incredible, providing world class trout fishing on the premises and amazing dirtbike trails nearby. The staff including the owners have been wonderful, providing old school hospitality and are always welcoming and accommodating. This is not some fancy downtown hotel so if that's what you want look elsewhere. If however you want a quiet cabin to use as a launch point for an epic adventure in the mountains and a homey place to crash each night Harmel's is your place!! read more

We spent our honeymoon here it was a beautiful place we stayed at cabin 5. They had lots to do if you enjoy fishing and hiking we payed for the white water rafting which was one of the best things there! The food was amazing but most definitely recommend the America plan. Chef mike did an amazing job was the one who made it really special! The cabin was okay kinda outdated but served its purpose. However if you don't like bugs and spiders lol might wanna rethink a cabin! But overall a great trip with great scenery! Just too reiterate Chef mike was the bomb!! read more

They have an scenic river-front dining area with a deck, but the poor food quality, diversity and the surly staff just ruin it. We came to fish the Taylor River, and while the surroundings are incredible, we don't plan on returning to Harmel's. Our room reeked of cigarette smoke, and there wasn't another room available. There were beetle bugs in the bed and food remnants under the night stand. Bugs are ok when I'm camping, but in a room...not so much. The tub didn't drain. I did notice the day we checked out that the young men responsible for cleaning the rooms were smoking while standing next to the linen cart, so that may explain the cigarette smell. Breakfast bar = one star. Very much what you'd find in a hotel but worse for wear on the hot side. Couldn't eat it. You can make your own waffles, and the fruit/yogurt/toast side is ok. The coffee was cold both mornings. Our server the 2nd morning did offer to microwave it and explained that the coffee makers didn't work properly. (?) Breakfast is $10 per person. We stuck to burgers for lunch, and they were fine. Fly shop = one star. Fishing at the resort = ok, but you can quickly drive to a few other beautiful areas with zero crowds. Most of the young people who work at Harmel's are friendly, but there is a lack of a urgency and initiative relative to service. We were only there to fish, but it's clear that families come to enjoy horseback riding, rafting, and other activities all offered by the camp. The pool is in good condition. They are a dog-friendly establishment. Overall impression: lack of cleanliness and adult presence/ service. read more

My family has been going to Harmel's for many years and generations. I am not sure what is going on but it has changed and NOT for the better. We just returned last night I am sad to write this kind of review. The is NOT the Harmel's of the past and Pros: Beautiful location and amazing weather. Nothing Harmel's has any control over. Cons: Cabins. Cabins are NOT being taken care of. We had two cabins and one had roaches in the bathroom, ants in the kitchen and flies in one bedroom so badly they were collecting on the window because there was a crack between the window and the wall. I get that it is a cabin but it isn't supposed to be like this! Supplies were not stocked very well. Ran out of TP and paper towels. We were told on our last day that paper towels were not supplied anymore. The furniture is old and rundown. The couches and the tables have been the same for over 30 years. I know because they are the same as when I was 10. At least change the cushions. Cleaning service. In the past, a few cleaning people would come in while we were gone and bring fresh towels, TP, paper towels, make the beds, wash the dishes, etc. We had NO cleaning service the ENTIRE time we were there. Not once. We ran out of bath towels, toilet paper and paper towels. On our LAST afternoon there a truck showed up (after I requested some items at the office) and brought some clean towels and TP and left them on the dining tables. Water pressure. This was a real issue! NO water pressure in the showers or sinks at all. We had to stand under a dribble of water and try to do our best. In the past this has never been an issue. Also, on ALL of the faucets, hot is cold and cold is hot. Not sure why but just annoying. Staff. In the past the staff was the best! Not anymore. Not friendly, outgoing, respectful or pleasant. I actually got "scolded" in a very nasty way in front of my family by one of the men working at the stables because our group changed from 5 to 4 riders that morning. (my daughter-in-law with us has a medical issue that unfortunately flared up that morning) He was very nasty and condescending in front of my family and it was embarrassing. Usually smiles and greetings but not anymore. Very sad. We had a campfire one night and made smores using a ring of rocks that were there when we got there. The next day a man showed up in a Jeep and without even speaking to us first, took all of the rocks and threw them into the river and all of the wood and threw them into our trash can. I took a video of him doing it. Not to repeat myself but the staff's service, attitudes and people skills were seriously lacking. ALL of the staff need training and more training. Fishing Not great to say the least. Harmel's charged us $20/day/person to fish!! We had 8 in our group so it would have cost us $160/day to fish! Outrageous. The fishing pond was a anointment because the water level was so low and not maintained. Horse poop was everywhere and was never cleaned up. In the past it would have been beautiful. Pool Pool was roped off with safety cones and safety tape the entire time we were there. We didn't use the pool at all. Gift shop Where did the gift shop go?? Used to buy a lot there. Went to Three Rivers in Almont and Crested Butte to buy all of my souvenirs, tee shirts and fun stuff. Very disappointed that they don't have a shop anymore. Lastly, I noticed that most of the few positive reviews are from about 4 years ago. Most posted in the past 4-5 years have not been very good. Harmel's... you are failing and have A LOT of improving to do before we ever return. read more

Went to Harmel's for a fishing trip and didn't know what a treat we walked into! The price was excellent and enjoyed the free breakfast. We didn't expect to have private water too fish on, which was a wonderful surprise. We hired Brock (the fishing guide) for a few hours on our 1st day just to understand the water and where the fish were. Brock was wonderful and got us into fish right away! We fished the next two days solo and Brock was still helpful checking in on us and even helped me improve my roll cast. The cabin was comfortable and clean and met our simple needs (kitchen, place to eat, play cards and chat). While the cabins are older they are going through an extensive renovation and look forward to seeing the finished product. Staff was very friendly. I worry, if this place becomes really popular, how that could stress the river and fishing, so something to consider. read more

As an area resident I've referred countless friends and colleagues to Harmel's. However, the last two referrals came back and told me that while the resort and river were nice, the staff we unfriendly and down right hostile. One was quite upset about his stay at the resort. I initially chalked it up to just a fluke experience (hey - that happens) but when the second came back unhappy I thought there might be something up with Harmel's. I stayed there many years ago and loved it. The other day when driving past the resort the stable manager, Bodie, waved me down and was quite rude. Despite going the posted speed limit, I guess he took exception to how slow I was in coming to a stop in front of a line of guests on horseback that were crossing the road. Sure - that's his prerogative. However what I was not ready for was the degree of his rudeness - even taking down my license plate as some sort of implied threat to me. All the while, leaving his paying customers standing exposed in the middle of the highway on their horses. I asked a few other friends in the area what was up with Harmel's and they said that the place has really gone downhill lately. Numerous complaints about the indifference or even rudeness of the staff. I won't be sending anyone else their way. Maybe it is a new management team or owner? I love this place. We came for the 1st time last year at the beginning of the season, and we plan to come back ever summer, if possible. Our golden retriever was so warmly welcomed and the staff went out of their way to make suggestions on how he could feel the most comfortable. Breakfast every morning was great, with cheerful staff and the dining room has a perfect view of the river. The fishing guides are fantastic and the stable is so accommodating and wranglers all so knowledgeable and very diverse. BUT the BEST thing is the location. There's nothing like it! read more

Do not bother with this restaurant. First, It was empty. We sat ourselves on the deck. Umbrella did not work had to get my own from another table. Waitress shows up 20 minutes later to take our order. 15 minutes later we get our ice teas. Appetizer never came. Our food arrives in another 20 minutes. Waitress disappears. We go get our own silverware. We go get our own drink refills. She comes by with the check then disappears again. Have to track down another person to pay. Will never go here again. read more

My husband and I started staying at Harmel's by accident several years ago while on a camping trip. We couldn't have been more happy to find a place on the river with great fishing, beautiful views, nice staff and cabins to stay in. We have gone back many times for a weekend here and there. We noticed on our visit in 2015 that things just didn't feel the same. We booked a certain cabin, it was not available when we arrived and had been rented to someone else. We were told the restaurant on site would be closed so we brought our own food. The cabin they gave us did not have a kitchen. We stayed there the first night and were moved in the morning. We chalked it up to a mis-communication and continued on with our weekend. I made reservations 2 weeks ago and requested a specific cabin. Will emailed us back stating the cabin we wanted (11) was not available but my second choice of 31,36 or 37 were available. I promptly gave him a call and requested 37 and gave my cc# to hold the reservation. I explained over the phone as well as in my email that we need a kitchen since we were told the restaurant would more than likely be closed as the season ended on the 20th. Friday the 22nd, we pull in around 7:30pm. I walk toward the office and see the lights are off (office hours state they are open until 9pm) and there are several envelopes pinned to the wall next to the door. I pick up the envelope with our last name on it and open it up. They have again put us in a cabin that I didn't reserve. We go to the cabin, the door is locked and there are no keys. We drive back to the area of the office/restaurant and walk into the bar. We explain to the bartender our situation and he made a phone call to whomever was to come assist us. Not sure the name of the man that came to help us, but we were not impressed. We went over the whole story again, he actually became irritated with us because we wanted a room with a kitchen. I had explained that this was a request I had made at the time of the reservation. Apparently Will? did not write this down? Or it was written down and this man just chose to ignore it? He stated that he a was booked and that there wasn't much he could do. He came back out with a key to yet another cabin (31) but explained we would need to vacate before 10am as they had other guests coming to that cabin in the morning for a week long stay. 8:45am comes and the cleaning lady is at the door asking when we would be out. She gave us a key to the new cabin (8). We pack the car back up and move. We walk in the door and the only thing you can smell is pot. I know this state is legal but not everyone partakes......I left the doors and bathroom window open and it quickly cleared out. The rest of the day went well. Husband out fishing and me on the deck soaking up the sun. Later in the evening husband went and picked up some movies from the office and I made dinner. 7:00am Sunday. Husband gets up to go out and fish, I get up to make us breakfast. I walk into the kitchen and there is not one open spot that does not have mouse crap on it. All over the stove, counter and dining table. After having a mini melt down, I quickly packed up our bags and the food in the refrigerator and started loading the car yet once again. Husband came back for breakfast and I told him we were leaving and would eat on the way back home. I was not going to cook anything in that place. Totally disgusting!!! We go to the office to check out, the man that checked us in was working again. He asked how our stay was, I told him we were pretty much over it and explained my sight when I had gotten up. He states, "well, it's getting cold out. The mice need somewhere to go." I signed my cc slip and walked out the door. Not sure what is going on at this place anymore. It is a real shame that a place that used to be so cozy and the people so nice is turning into a crap hole with bitter old people running it. This place needs a facelift and new owners, until then, we will not return! read more

My family has been to Harmels several times through out the years. This year we decided to do a small reunion for my husbands 50th birthday. We had 13 people join us. I continue to love Harmels. They were great to work with and made everything seem easy. The ranch is in such a beautiful location and the fishing is world class. Harmels is an old fashion "lodge" type of set up and the cabins are rustic. The entertainment and activities at Harmels are so family friendly. The meals are buffet style and for being out in the mountains it's really quite good. Awesome breakfast buffet everyday. Anyway, everybody had a wonderful time and the staff help to make it a trip of a lifetime! read more

We stayed at Harmel's during a large 3-day family reunion last week. I reserved a cabin with a 'kitchenette' and was quoted $240/nt with one night's reservation agreed as deposit. My credit card was immediately charged $882 - more than the total with taxes was to be! I called and emailed and did get part refunded. However, when we arrived there was only a mini-refrigerator with a microwave sitting on top of it and a coffee maker sitting on top of the frig! No sink, cook top, cabinets, plates ... things that are normally part of 'kitchenette' terms. In addition, the tub faucet was running at a rate that equaled 1 ounce PER SECOND and sounded like a waterfall next to our bedroom! The room was filthy and had a bag of moth balls in the hot water closet which made the entire cabin reek. The windows didn't completely open or close so there's no way to really utilize the cool mountain breeze. Food was acceptable but not great! Bottom line: NEVER STAY IN THIS PLACE. WORST EXPERIENCE EVER. read more

HUGE disappointment. We reserved cabin 11 months ago and were moved to cabin 8 because of a "septic tank issue" in their words. Walking around cabin 11 you could see they had winterized this cabin and no septic tank issue was visible. Checking into cabin 8, the heater did not work, the water in the shower had a steady flow that you could not shut off causing mold on the floor of this "scary" shower and the toilet was about to fall through the floor. The cabin needs a thorough cleaning as there are spider webs, dead bugs in the lamp shades, dog hair covering the couch, and the back door when locked can be opened by just pulling it. Instead of a thorough cleaning it should be scraped to the ground. When I discussed the issues with the man at the front desk and asked to be moved I was told they could not move s but would give us a refund which we have not received. Interesting, as they had a vacancy sign posted at the entrance. Their web site states the restaurant would be open until the end of September but on September 19 it was already closed. Stay elsewhere; this place is not worth it. read more

Where to begin? Picture a cabin much in need of updating, including a disgusting shower with mold growing in the caulking. Due to the placement of the toilet and sink, we literally had to maneuver ourselves around just to use the toilet. We had booked three nights and were looking forward to horses, rafting, and the "dude" ranch atmosphere that research of this place had led us to believe existed. But after the first night, we found and booked other accommodations online, then were told by the front desk that they would keep our $250 deposit since we weren't giving 7 days notice. We ended up requesting a conversation with the owner, asking him how he could possibly justify renting that cabin for $210 a night!! He was intimidating and tried to tell us that "economic times" were making it hard for him, but we held our ground. Eventually he left, slamming the door, and told the front desk clerk to just charge us for the one night, no security deposit. Thankfully he made that decision, because that turned out to be his only redeeming quality. As far as the young staff, this could be just a little thing: our server at breakfast picked up our coffee cups at the rim, where we drink from, as she was refilling them. And, the young male employees gave me the impression they were on the prowl. Creepy. read more

He claimed he doesn't have a scanner and that he needs to mail the receipt to me. He continued yelling and then hung up on me. I always enjoy stopping at Harmel's. It has been a little while since my last visit so I was a little concerned after reading some of the recent reviews. We made reservations for 4th of July and were not disappointed. The people are always very nice and pleasant. They had an open cabin instead of the room we had reserved so we were pleasantly surprised to find out when we arrived that we were in a cabin on the river. We did not even have to ask, they just put us in an open cabin which was sincerely appreciated. That is good hospitality and business in my opinion to upgrade because... they can. Rented waders and boots at the fly shop and they were good quality and they had good selection to fit. We did not eat at the restaurant so cannot comment on the food. We did walk in to eat but they were between breakfast and lunch so were resetting for that. The hostess did tell us that she would speak with the kitchen to see if they would make something for us regardless of being closed - we declined but sincerely appreciated the fact that it was offered. There was a squirrel in the wall of our cabin that greeted us when we arrived and gave us a morning wake up but was not really an irritant. Harmel's is not a five star resort or hotel so if you are looking for that it's not your kinda place. What it is, is a warm, secure, friendly, fantastic rustic place in beautiful country that offers a sweet piece of the Taylor River to fish on and Horseback Riding. My kinda place. read more

For over 20 years, my wife and I had enjoyed visiting this Resort. Fishing is always a treat along with horseback riding and hiking the areas trails. This year we could not have been more disappointed in the service of the restaurant staff. We sat down for breakfast and it was over 20 minutes until we were even asked if we wanted coffee. We had to listen to the staffs conversations of which of the nearby cabins and resort guests were the wealthiest instead of being engaged by the wait staff. This would have been forgiven for 1 morning, but not for two days in a row. On the other hand, the service staff for the grounds and care of the cabins were as good as always and always enjoyed our conversations with them. The management of the restaurant was as bad as it gets in the mountains or in any town in the country, but the owners appear to overlook this problem by not being their in person to observe their staff. We do not plan on returning and what a shame to us and our many friends we have recommended to this resort over the years. You decide, but be careful of where you spend your lodging and meal dollars. read more
