Thirfty staff was very unhelpful, staff was sitting around, unwilling to do their job, burning time before their shift was over. No service, and definitely no smile, they didn't honor by vehicle requested or better, very small selection on property, and cars smelled of cigarettes and other grassy products. I waited 24 minutes before i was even attended by the Dollar attendant at the other end of the counter, which had seen me waiting around. I was going to post my complaint about Thrifty/Dollar(same desk, same company), but I see there are dozens of similar reviews on here that are almost identical. All with someone from Thrifty apologizing and saying they will look into it. There's a reason Thrifty/Dollar has by far the worst reviews of any car rental company at Houston's airport(and maybe any airport). The one problem I didn't have was a long line to wait in. I had prepaid my rental through AmEx's travel service and it said all charges and fees were paid. When I got to the counter the agent asked for my DL and credit card. I declined the prepaid gas and extra insurances because AmEx already covers rental car insurance. Of course the chip on my new AmEx card wasn't working so he said I couldn't use it. I pulled out a Visa and he charged a $200 deposit PLUS another $159 for insurance even though I had declined it. He said my credit card wouldn't cover it even though AmEx specifically covers it. I was about to leave and go to another counter but he pointed out that since my reservation was prepaid that I couldn't cancel it!! So I took their outrageously overpriced insurance (it was for a 3 day rental) and went to the aisle to pick a car. An attendant had just dropped off a Toyota Sentra. I got in but noticed it looked worn with 25,000 miles and smelled of stale cigarette smoke. There was a Kia Soul next to it but someone had noted there were ignition problems in a grease marker on the window. So I went to the next car, another Toyota Sentra, but it seemed to have a dead battery since nothing came on. The only other car was another Kia sedan that had even more (38,000) miles on it than the first Sentra. So I went back to the Sentra with the stale tobacco smell. So I am going to spend all my free time for the next few days harassing AmEx to convince them not to offer Thrifty/Dollar rental cars. For all the customers smart enough to check reviews in advance, do yourself a favor and pick ANY OTHER rental car company. read more

Do NOT BOOK!!!! If there was less than one star they deserve it. We landed at HOU and booked at 1am pickup. Only to find out when we landed there was no shuttle and they were CLOSED! Took 2 hours to find another car with Budget who was amazing about the customer service. Now, calling Thrifty customer service who has transferred us 7 times (still on the line so we will likely continue to be transferred) and NO HELP! Do NOT book. read more

If I could pick no stars, I would. Ever since this place got a new owner a few years back, the service and quality of vehicles has sucked. Cars are always filthy. Sometimes the owners elementary-aged kid checked us in. This past week's rental was the final "straw that broke the camel's back." First, the guy looked upset we showed up and disrupted his coffee run. Second, he kept talking about how hungover he was and that he really needed some coffee. Third, the car had less than a quarter tank of gas. Fourth - and this is just nasty, the car had cigarette ash all over the dashboard and the windows. We found a have empty cigarette box under the seat. This was supposed to be. Smoke-free vehicle. The floors were filthier than usual. I didn't even want to sit directly on the seats. Fifth, the left rear brake light was broken. I called thrifty and they told me no cars were available to replace this one. I will never go back to this location and thinking about not ever going back to thrifty/dollar ever. We returned the car today. The same guy was working. He could've cared less. Like many others, I would love to give this place no stars. Classic bait and switch like many others have complained about. Rented a convertible to take my girlfriend up to a drive in movie in Tomball. Show up and am told "we can't rent convertibles to people without return airplane tickets." Note that this rental location is about 30 miles from the nearest airport. Also note that there was zero indication of this when the reservation was made. Girl at the counter tells me that they can give me another vehicle for the same price - with the same price being roughly three times as expensive as any other car they rent. Thanks guys, appreciate it. Call up Thrifty customer service, and she tells me the reason is that "if you're a local they don't have a guarantee that you're going to return it to the airport." She admitted the policy was non-sensical but didn't seem to want to do anything about it. 1) where else am I going to return it to? 2) airport? They're not an airport location. 3) if you're that worried about it, just slap a huge penalty on it if I try to turn it into a one way rental. What a joke. Bait & Switch. Booked an SUV via Expedia. Thrifty (this location) had the lowest rate. Called location directly the day before pickup to confirm. Got there day of pickup and the SUV "had not arrived" from their other location. When would it be delivered? Hmmm, not sure. But they had this Camry they could rent to me. I think they low balled on the rate with never indenting to honor it; figuring that I would take a car at their regular rate. I walked. Never again. Thrifty rent-a-car has fallen fast now that Hertz owns them. I am a Blue Chip member but I will never rent from Thrifty again. Service at this location was confrontational. Only became agreeable when I was dialing the corporate office to complain. This rental location took over for the one at the Galleria but no one called me to tell me to return my car there. I had to drive all over to find out where to return my rental. I had the car for several weeks. At the checkout counter the agent told me that in addition to the rental fees I knew about I was going to be charged $75 more per week for an extended rental. No apology. No opps. Just in your face bait & switch. Never again. read more

If there negative star, they would get it. This place puts the "hor" in horrific. We decided to book a car with them online with their wild card special. Which seem like it would be a good deal until we got there. When we got there the representative annoyed about us being there. We were just trying to make sure that we were in the right building being the Dollar and Thrifty were combined. After the unpleasantries, we were shown the car. Which happen to be a Toyota Yaris( the smallest car Toyota makes). We stated that we were promise a car that fit 5. This car could hardly fit two toddlers in the back. It only got worst from there, we were not able to upgrade, because the representative stated they had no more cars. Although the lot in the back was full of cars. The smell in the car was mask by an abundance of PineSol. So we ask if we could pick up a car from another location, that was yet another no. So being that we need the car for a family trip. We had no other choice than to leave the car and lose our money. We found an Enterprise around the corner that help us right away. This place should not be open for business. At less this location, they showed that they simply do not care about the customer. To say that we were dissatisfied is an understatement. We were just simply disgusted with customer treatment. Rented a car on Thurs. Aug 24, 2017 pick was easy. I had a reservation and had pre-paid. However, beware if you don't use a Visa c.c. you may incur unnecessary charges! Unfortunately I got stuck in Hurricane Harvey and The city of Houston has been shut down! Roads are closed, businesses are closed and flights are cancelled. So why doesn't Thrifty waive the cost of the rental car until the disaster is over? 1. NO ONE can drive - streets are flooded 2. NO ONE is at Thrifty to take the car if could return the car. 3. Mandatory shelter in place! I called the 800 number and had to wait 20 min. only to speak to Gary who couldn't speak good english, so he transferred me to the accident department! Then I explained my situation and the lady asked me why I was transferred to her???? I was told to call back and again 20 min later I woke to Barasi who informed me I would be charged another day if I didn't return the car...I explained that the car couldn't be returned but she charged my car again anyway!!! read more

DO NOT RENT FROM HERE. We booked a rental car through Orbitz and the first car was dirty and the bumper was damaged, so we asked for another car. The next car was still damaged and stained inside and the rep ignored us. We asked another rep who brushed us off and was of no help. AND on top of that the exit rep who's suppose to note damage to the car prior to leaving ignored our concerns and simply said that the company won't charge us for those issues since it needs to be "major" damage. We also called customer service 3 different times and was finally able to get someone to document and note the damages on the car... this was an extremely frustrating and negative experience and I will not be using Thrify ever again. I just wished I would've checked the Yelp reviews first before booking. read more

Talk about sucky service, first off, if you tell someone it's $50 in a reservation, and the car you promised wasn't there then shouldn't you honor the price that the customer reserved? Horrible service. I asked if the car I was renting had a bumper to bumper checklist done and was told no because they are "just so busy." After getting the car I noticed that there were cigarette butts in the back seat as well as a opened moldy cream cheese container. Also the car had brake issues and when I returned the car and I informed him and was again told that " I don't care anyways." I will never rent again from this place. read more

Worst rental experience ever. After leaving the lot, I realized that the tank was only 1/4 full though the receipt claimed it was full. I stopped the car to call their office to work it out then realized that the back seat was full of food crumbs, and the check engine light was on. I was already at work so I decided I would exchange it the next morning. The next day, I got there at 8am and had to wait (along with about 3 others) until 8:15 until someone finally showed up. I told the person in line in front of me to double check to make sure the car is clean. By the time I got to the counter, the lady in front of me had returned, completely pissed, because guess what? She found the back seat was filthy. By the time I was able to exchange my car, it was 8:45. The new car, while not filthy, looked like it had been wiped with a dirty cloth. Streaks all over the dash. There was also a crack on the windshield but by that time I really didn't care any more, I just wanted to get on with my life. But when I returned it, I found out that no one at Thrifty had bothered to document the crack so I had to fill out all this paperwork and was told I may need to pay for the damages. This was just yesterday, and I haven't received any response yet, so I'll reserve further judgment until this is resolved. Also, the lot is incredibly cramped, and difficult to get in/out. I have had success with Thrifty before, but this particular location flat out stinks and will not get my business again regardless of price. read more

This was the worsttttt rental car experience ever. I called yesterday with Thrifty reservation to ensure two seven passenger vans which we reserved back on may 24th would be there. They ensured us there would. We also NUMEROUS times called the actual location but they never answered the phone. Well they had no vans and the didn't give a crap. They didn't try anything to get they just stated they don't get vans. Go figure you can reserve but you can't get. They have had our $1200 for the one month and we have no cars. Vacation it to start tomorrow and we are scrambling to find two vans. What a crock of sh!! Never again from thrifty. The better business bureau Wil be hearing from us. Credit card company already has this will take months to get our money back and we did nothing wrong and everything we could to ensure we would get our vans. Never rent from here EVER!!!! read more

I rent cars all the time so I have quite a lot of experience with rental car services. This was, undoubtedly, the absolute worst. It took us more than 30 minutes to get our car even though we had reserved it in advance. We wouldn't have minded but the subsequent events really upset us. The car, a Toyota Yaris, was badly damaged. When we asked for a new car, the response was rather unbelievable - the Thrifty Rep said "all of our cars are like this". 3 days into our rental contract, all of the maintenance lights started flashing. We called Thrifty to explain the situation and they said the car was 3000 miles past due for service. 3000 miles past its required service... We drove 50 minutes to the nearest Thrifty and we were given an exchange vehicle. The new vehicle was fine but there was no explanation given. When we finally got back to Houston, the sales representative and I had a conversation about the course of our rental. There was barely an apology given and Thrifty refused to help out at all - no deduction from the total cost, no discount for future reservations. Nothing. Word to the wise: perhaps not all Thriftys are like this but this place (judging from other reviews) has a history of mistreating and misguiding customers. Do yourself a favour and take your money elsewhere. There is an Enterprise about 400 meters away on Greenbriar which has excellent customer service and is always ready to help - take your money there or to any other rental company. Learn from our experience and get a much better deal. We will never be returning to this establishment. read more

Arrived at scheduled pick up time, person at the counter told me she could not log in computer and I had to wait for whoever was in meeting to come out. 20 + minutes later someone came to help me. I spent another ten minutes checking my car insurance coverage and then when we were ready to proceed they told me that they did not have my car and could only give me a small car and asked me to go to airport and switch. But I am not gong to airport and are driving to Dallas instead. So they told me to go to downtown and pick up car. By the time they decided to have it delivered I had been here for over an hour. I have not known a car rental location where I did not have my booked car waiting for me. Very frustrating experience. Will not rent from them again. And while I was waiting they told me that it is a small location and this happened a lot. To me it does not make sense. How can you not able to deliver what you promise and this happens on a regular basis? After I had been waiting for my car to be delivered for 20 minutes I checked the status with the staff there. I was told that the car was not to be delivered and they were going to send someone to pick it up. It was too late for me to book with another rental company and I had waited for so long already so I decided to wait longer. So after I had waited for almost three and half hours I finally got my car. Thrifty took 60 dollars off my bill so you have to decide if the 60 dollars was enough to pay for a party of five to delay our trip for 3 1/2 hours. To me it was not. When we returned our car, the lady on duty was ignoring us and had no smile on her face, not sure what her issues were but she did not seem happy working there. This is by far the WORST rental car experience I have ever had. I travel extensively for work and have rented many cars...so for this to be the worst says a lot. Service was horrific. I experienced a bait and switch tactic between the rate quoted when I reserved the car online and when I picked it up. I reserved a premier car only for them to not have any available and ended up with a lower quality car. By the time I got the car (after waiting for 60 minutes to be served), the car was dirty and was not full of gas even though I was expected to bring it back full or incur additional charges. When I asked if the car could be cleaned and have gas put in it, they said I would need to wait 30 minutes more. Then when I went to finally return the car, had another 30 minute wait. To make matters worse, I was in town with my sister who was getting cancer treatment and incredibly sick the whole time we were waiting for pick up and return. Try again today at 4:00 and there is a hand written sign that says they will be back at 5:00. I reserved a one week mid-sized SUV rental for more than a month for an out of town trip. When I got there, they don't have my car. They offered me a small Kia Soul that was simply too small for us. They were unapologetic. It was more like take it or leave it. The service was also terrible. I waited for almost 25 minutes at the service counter before being helped. Initially we picked up our rental car from the Dollar/Thrifty at IAH and the service definitely left a bad taste in our mouths so we decided to drop the vehicle off at the location on Holcombe Boulevard. When we arrived the ladies were friendly, kind and quick! Lakeesha was phenomenal! Not only did they provide great service but on top of that, when we needed a ride back to our hotel, Lakeesha got one of her guys, Curtis to drive us back (AND they did this free of charge!). Curtis was also very friendly and helped us find some good restaurants nearby. They really made up for the Dollar at the airport and went above and beyond to take care of us. Horrible. I went there to rent a car for a week and a man named Abdul tells me I need to purchase $170 insurance on the car. Being my first car rental, I ask him if it is absolutely necessary that I buy the insurance and he says yes, that I HAVE TO. With no other option at that point, I pay the extra money and head home disappointed. No sooner than I talk to someone else do I realize that I shouldn't HAVE to pay the insurance, so I call up the main Thrifty Office and they tell me that the insurance is OPTIONAL at this location. Fuming, I call up this Mr. Abdul and tell him what I was told and he tells me "You must have told me that you don't have any insurance", I barely saw him half an hour ago and that statement definitely never came out of my mouth. He was very rude on the phone and basically called me a liar. I drove back to the site and cancelled the insurance, but still was charged for the whole first day. I didn't think that I should have to pay for that day since he had misinformed (LIED to) me, but I had no choice, as he was not even the least bit apologetic. I told him that he was dishonest and that this probably made him a good businessman. I felt completely taken advantage of at this location. Perhaps other Thrifty locations are better, but I don't trust this man and I would not recommend anyone go to this location for a car rental. read more
