Had a counselor that seemed fine. Turns out she was getting her usual fee that week even though she told me she was sick and couldnt meet over video chat. ALSO I was emailing her I was suicidal TWICE and she NEVER responded back when mentioning wanting to kill myself, using a knife. Despite not going throigh with anything, I would consider that a dereliction of your oath! So, I have moved on to getting help through my primary. I would be VERY careful when using Thriveworks. Tried a family session with a counselor named Charlotte Williams. She could not have been any worse. She suggested the most irresponsible things, and was clueless on the topics being discussed (a family member with substance abuse issues). It was horrible. And, it was virtual and she was not alone. I could hear other people in the background including a baby that she ended up picking up on screen during the session. This is a violation of HIPPA laws. I filed a complaint with the licensing authority but of course the only response I got was that they did not take disciplinary action though there may have been an agreement with the provider for the provider to take additional training or make other adjustments, and that agreement - if it existed - is confidential. Thriveworks said they would fire her. They didn't. She still works there. They also refused to refund the money because they already billed insurance. LOL What a crock. read more

As someone who desperately needed help from a professional, I would advise you NOT to involve yourself with Thriveworks. From my experience so far, there is NO guarantee for a refund. This company is very suspicious and there is no good way to contact someone about refunds. I was charged $99 for an enrollment fee when I never received any therapy. It had been cancelled because it was "no longer available." I have never heard of therapy that operates like a gym membership (Except you are paying $99 upfront, $29/mo, and you don't have access everyday.) I called twice to ask for no charges and cancel all service/monthly fees but there was no clear indication that my cancellation was properly conducted from the first phone call and in the second call, I was told I would be e-mailed by the billing department within 5 days about my refund, but they refused to give me a number I could call or an e-mail address when I asked and they don't know if I will be guaranteed a refund. I went to Yelp to find others with a similar situation and found the e-mail success@thriveworks.com to explain my case, but I have not received a response yet. Unfortunately, Thriveworks does exactly what everyone here is warning you about. I made the mistake of scheduling an appointment prior to looking them up on here. Once I did, I knew I made a mistake, and I cancelled the appointment immediately (roughly 10 minutes after I made it). They responded the next day that they had cancelled my appointment and closed my enrollment. It's a little over a week later and I just received a charge for a membership fee. I never write reviews, but this has been a horrible experience. Between multiple last-minute session cancellations and my clinician literally always being 15 minutes late, I can't go on! Also, they never fixed their auto-attendant for their phone lines, so if you stay on hold to talk to someone (like instructed) you will just get stuck in a loop. This chain of practices is an absolute scam. I was referred here as a student for psychiatry by the third party referral service my University uses. I was appalled when I was told during my phone intake that there would be a $99 intake fee and then a monthly subscription fee of $29 (!) in addition to insurance co-pays per session. She said this was because Thriveworks is a "premium practice" and the fees supposedly support amenities, most of which I note are unavailable anyway while they are doing telehealth. I was only told about these fees after I had already spent time on the phone giving a ton of personal information and scheduled an appointment with a provider. This is also suspect because why would I sign up for a subscription before I even know if the clinician is a good fit? I told the person on the phone was no way I could pay this and thank you anyway. They told me that they would waive the intake fee and I would be offered a trial for one month to see if I liked Thriveworks' "premium services" enough to commit. So I decided to keep the appointment. It turns out that Thriveworks is definitely not for me, and I cancelled after my first session. The clinician was very personable, but Thriveworks is unable to prescribe controlled substances and I have ADHD, and need stimulants as a potential option to pursue. Well, I checked my online portal, and it looks from the interface like this "trial" actually costs $39 that they plan to bill my card on file. When have you ever heard of a trial that wasn't free!? What I was signed up for, without my knowledge, was a "39-then-39-month" subscription. Absolutely shady business practices, and I will be filing a disputed charge with my credit card company when the transaction posts and a complaint with the BBB. I only hope I'm not charged other ludicrous amounts associated with my single session like others have. Update: I received a call from Thriveworks confirming that my trial was a trial and that I won't be charged anything. I appreciate this, and that the representative Amber (I may be getting that wrong?) reached out to me to ensure me of this and offer me options if talk therapy was something I wanted to pursue. The counselor I've managed to meet so far (only once, thanks to Thriveworks' nonsensical scheduling) is fantastic. However, my experience thus far has been nothing short of horrible. I reached out to Thriveworks originally because I was suffering from severe depression symptoms and needed to get some help for myself quickly. The woman I spoke to on the phone seemed to be far more interested in my credit card number for their ridiculous monthly AND yearly fee than whether or not my life was in danger. I said "what the hell" and decided to pay the fee as I really did need the help. I was never sent an informed consent form, no link to their online "portal", nothing. A week later I met with a very nice counselor at their 929 Cambridge location who was fantastic. Attentive, well educated, and seemed like a great fit for me! We had an introductory session and agreed to meet the next week at the same time, or so I thought. Fast forward to my second session date and I run to Cambridge to make my appointment on time. My therapist appeared in the waiting area confused-after all, I wasn't on his schedule! Unlike other therapists and companies which give you a weekly time slot, it seems Thriveworks requires you to schedule your session weekly via their online portal. As I write this, I'm on the phone with them-after six minutes of holding I managed to get a representative and asked to speak to a supervisor. He asked me to hold on a moment and hung up on me! I'll be calling my bank and denying these charges. I'm contemplating making a complaint to the state as well. This kind of practice could get someone injured or killed. EDIT: After speaking to a supervisor over the phone who was exceedingly sympathetic, I have been refunded my enrollment fee. I'll be looking elsewhere. read more

This place is a total scam and they have zero regard for people's wellbeing. I called them to book an appointment and they told me they accepted my insurance so I booked an appointment with them. They tried to sell me the membership but when I said I couldn't afford it they let me waive it. Then they called me again two days later to verify my info and confirm the appointment. And then, a few hours prior to the actual appointment they emailed me letting me know that in fact they did not take my health insurance and that I would have to pay 150 dollars out of pocket for the appointment. I called them on the phone to ask why this was happening and the person who took my call had the audacity of telling me that I should be grateful they let me know in advance instead of charging me without telling me. But the psychological damage outweighs any nice chats I had with them over the phone (I had 3 separate calls with them over 30 minutes long to try and figure this all out). First appointment, I showed up in the online waiting room and no one showed up. Second time, my appointment was cancelled without telling me because I hadn't filled out paperwork that was not required for my first failed appointment and that no one told me to fill out. Massive fan of Thriveworks. I've been going to see Deb Brigandi for the past four months. She has been a perfect fit for me. Genuine, a great listener, holds me accountable, gives me action plans when I need it, and is also very knowledgable about different areas she can be of help to me. She knows her stuff. I also love Thriveworks, the company. I can book my appointments online and also have recurring meetings set up to make it easy to get time with Deb. It's been a great experience. The waiting rooms are nice. There's water, coffee, etc available. I typically meditate in the waiting room while I wait before my appointment, and Deb is always on time. I'm so glad I found this place and Deb. I had been to ~10 therapists before and she is by far the best one there. The model of this company is absolutely predatory and taking advantage of the shortage of mental health professionals. They charge $39 per month just for the 'privilege' of accessing their practitioners. This is on top of whatever copay and percentage of service fees are necessary to pay. I have been trying to determine the actual cost of a session fee for weeks and they have been evasive via phone and email. Their customer service representative was highly uninformed, calling their nurse practitioners "psychologists" when she actually meant "psychiatrists". In actuality, a nurse practitioner is NOT a psychiatrist. As a former mental health professional, and someone with a ton of experience in customer service, I was aghast at the level of disrespect by the people working their phones. But the biggest problem is this $39/month fee. Do yourself a favor and go to an individual provider who offers telehealth. Calling around is worth avoiding this terrible company. read more

I would rate zero stars if possible... Poor quality on the counseling service... All I heard from the therapist was "yes... it seems to be very hard..." or "are you worried about that?" When I just mentioned I was worried about that! High hidden rates you only learn post service so there is nothing you can do about it but just go ahead and pay for it. And this is additional to the subscription fees and the insurance costs! You are told you can use your HSA but they keep charging your credit card (which you must give the info for the subscription fees), and charges happen without your approval, even when you are still exchanging emails or phone calls to understand what the cost is about... They deducted $89 from my account for a session that my insurance covered 100% without even telling me. It's been 8 weeks since they did it, Iv called 5 different times I get the same run around from the employee "billing will get back to you " well that's a lie. Billing WILL NOT call you back. Then there telling me I have to have a referral to be seen, so they are charging me a monthly fee and refusing to let me be seen even though Iv verified multiple times through my insurance that I don't need one. TLDR; Clinician cancelled with no explanation and no one has resolved this. I hateeee giving one star reviews but I have to be honest, this place is a complete waste of time. After quite a few phone calls trying to get scheduled with a provider who accepted my insurance (Thriveworks seemed to have issues figuring this out) I had an online meeting scheduled for Tuesday at 9:00. When by 9:30 no one had entered the zoom conference call I called to see what was up. After 30 mins waiting on the phone I was told someone would call me back. No one did. I had received texts prior to this indicating I could also text for help, so I did. The person who texted me back was not only no help but didn't even provide complete sentences in their very curt responses. I was basically just told to call the office back. I tried two more times before finally getting through for a woman who said that she had no idea what happened but that the clinician would call me and I should reschedule in the meantime. Later she changed her story and said that the office's internet was acting up. (Not sure why they wouldn't call if that was the case to let me know). I let it go and tried to reschedule. I was promptly told that because I live in DC, my ONLINE appointment with a clinician from the VA location was not permitted in the first place (no one mentioned this when scheduling) and there were apparently no clinicians available to me in DC. The operator apologized and suggested I call again in the next few weeks. The next day I received a text asking how my appointment went. Absolutely blown that none of this info was communicated to whoever was reaching out to me I retold my story. They suggested I call and retry. At that point shouldn't they be trying for me? Honestly really really unprofessional and disorganized organization. My clinician never called to apologize and no one has tried to amend the situation. These people should not be working in the mental health space. The whole ordeal was just added stress on my plate. read more

My kid signs up for Thriveworks, has a few unsatisfying telemedicine calls, decides Thriveworks isn't working, and stops making new appointments. Thriveworks, however, keeps on billing me monthly, as if my kid is still in counseling and still receiving a service in exchange for the reoccurring bill. Six months later, Thriveworks refuses to reimburse all those unused months and their reoccurring billing. Welcome to the cynical world of the "subscription economy," where companies like Thriveworks maximize profits by billing no matter whether they're providing a service or not. Thrive Works made a huge mistake in trying to resolve a situation with my daughter. We had individual counseling and then when it came to family counseling time they were unable to cancel both of us together in a family situation. I told them in the beginning my daughter lived in Tennessee and then I lived in South Carolina and they understood that and actually even set the family counseling meeting up only to find out that by law they could not cancel both of us together. Then I was so upset I requested that management at Thrive works on three different occasions contact me to discuss the matter on all three occasions they stood me up and refused to discuss the situation. These people are all about money and getting in your pocket not in your head. They actually sent me a bill after completely botching the counseling session. It would have been illegal for them to cancel both of us since they did not have a counselor that was licensed in both States which they told me in the beginning they did horrible situation horrible people highly recommend you find someone else. read more

THIS COMPANY IS A SCAM. After telling me that insurance covered my visits, I started going bi weekly. My therapist was ok. Just like others who have reviewed, she randomly left the company and I had to jump through a ton of hoops to get my subscription stopped. Then I was suddenly sent a bill for 900 DOLLARS. Apparently my insurance never approved coverage and they never told me. I've reached out multiple times referencing the "No Surprises Act" which was passed in January 2022 and prohibits healthcare providers from charging surprise bills. They MUST tell you PRIOR to visits that insurance does not cover and you pay out of pocket. THRIVEWORKS NEVER DID THIS. They then proceeded to ignore most of my emails and sent me constant billing statements with totally different amounts each time. Sometimes I had "$1000 insurance coverage", sometimes "$250 insurance coverage"....HOW DOES THAT WORK?!?? This company is a complete scam, and I'm so mad at myself for not researching better before signing up. DO NOT GO HERE FOR MENTAL HEALTH. I've also now been on hold for over 45min and no one is answering the billing extension - no one has called back to the multiple call backs I requested - I got a statement today saying they are charging the full amount to my card without my approval. Unfortunately, it's a big waste of time. I saw a counselor here who was sub-par -- that was last summer. Since late last year, I have made multiple unsuccessful attempts to cancel my membership and the monthly fees. I have called, I have gotten email confirmations of cancellation, and yet the monthly fees keep coming. I am on the phone with their call center right now as they try to connect with the "girls in Billing." (I didn't call them girls, that's what their call center calls them.) I've been on the phone for about a half hour, trying yet again to resolve the ongoing billing. (I haven't seen a counselor there since late 2019. Seven months.) I found a good counselor outside of Thriveworks. I wish I never went to Thriveworks. (I felt worse each time after I saw her, so after a few visits, I moved on.)
