I loved my experience at Throw Clay LA. Last year I took a 6 week class and absolutely fell in love with Clay pottery. I really loved everyone in the class, and the studio was great and let us use the studio outside of class as well. I met a ton of the members during the weekends and everyone was chill and laid back, and soooo talented! Lots of great dogs in this studio as well. I have given away a lot of my pieces as gifts (I made 16 pieces in my 6 weeks!) and everyone has loved them. It's a great heartfelt gift for anyone. I would have continued with the classes but I missed out on the next level classes, and then I moved jobs so I wasn't working in downtown as much. The 6 week class was such a fun way to break up the monotony of work. Both Danny from week 1 and Amber from week 2-6 were great instructors, and were approachable, comical, and incredibly helpful. Honorable mention must go to Galyn who helped me coordinate a last minute fill in to the weekend class. I really enjoyed the opportunity of open hours during the midweek to practice what you learned each week. My finished works - hideous, laughable, easily mistaken for child's work. Yet the satisfaction of applying the new knowledge and seeing the finished creations were priceless. Would say I clocked a total of 30+ hours in between the 2 hour weekend classes. The studio itself was very spacious, well laid out, and had such great vibes with members offering to help guide you and share advice. Also, it seemed like a great place to meet new people from outside circles you normally wouldn't cross paths with otherwise. Though I had taken a year of ceramics in highschool, I didn't feel any prior background experience was necessary to learn and enjoy from this class. If the goal is to produce as many works from your 10lb bag of clay - as was mine - I would say a general understanding of the timeline of firing + glazing and refiring would certainly help you stay on a good timeline. read more

My co-workers and I booked a "Potter's Wheel Private Pottery Events" and we had a lot of fun here! I looked up inspirations and had something in mind to make, but later I found out we can only make 2 bowls. They also glaze for you and there's only 4 colors to choose from. Parking can be a bit of a challenge. I found one parking lot behind the building and you may need to walk a bit. The instructor (Peiwen?) was nice and very detailed on all the steps. It can get pretty messy so don't wear your nice clothes. They have aprons and hair ties for you to use. I was a bit surprised that we had to clean up after ourselves. This is my first time taking a pottery class so I didn't know what to expect. Perhaps it's like this everywhere you go? I also thought it was expensive for one class. Again, I don't know that is the norm here. It is a very nice space, well kept and well lit. What I learned is that clay isn't so forgiving. Once you botched your piece, it's somewhat difficult to fix and you may need to start over. The instructor I had fixed all of our pieces every step of the way. If she didn't help us, our pieces may look even worse. I can't wait to receive our pieces in 4 weeks! I will add photos later if the pieces survive. read more

Love that you can take a single class here to try pottery out. The class I took had about 20 people (maybe a bit less) and broken up into 2 sections. Wheel and hand making. Each instructor was very great at explaining, especially during the wheel part. After you're done, you choose the color for your item to be painted. The studio to paint and glaze for you. Definitely try to get to the area early before class starts and look for parking on the street. I parked in the public lot behind the studio and it cost me $20. I would've looked elsewhere but I was late for the class. read more

Anyone who starts pottery on the wheel is always a little nervous and anxious. But at Throw Clay LA the instructors (and in this case we had a wonderful instructor who has been teaching for almost 10 years now - Amber) takes you through a lot of different kinds of techniques and breaks down the steps in a way that gives you more confidence working with clay no matter what your skill level. This is only the second time I've taken a pottery wheel class and I could see some of the differences and techniques that Amber showed us really helped! I also like that she was able to go around and really provide great feedback on how we were doing whether or not we needed to apply more pressure in some places or if our piece was ready to fall apart, she was there to guide us every step of the way. By the time I made my second piece I felt a lot more confident to be able to create a bowl that was more structurally sound and much more different than what my first bowl looked like. In total, we had nine people in our class - this is a great activity if you've got a couple of hours on a weekend and want to spend some quality time with friends being able to work at the wheel is relaxing and maybe sometimes challenging you in ways that, you're not used to in your day job but by the end of it you'll feel really accomplished. You'll be able to pick the glazes that you want on your pieces they currently have as of the time of this review for different colors that you can choose and then once they are completed, you'll get a notification via email on how to pick up your piece as well as the timeline at the time of this class, they said it would take 3 to 5 weeks to fire up glaze and finish each piece. The environment is really open and industrial. I felt very comfortable being able to work my clay throw clay. Parking is either street parking or paid lot parking down the street. I didn't have any problems parking at a lot on a Saturday but then street parking looked to be a little bit more crowded so make sure you a lot sometimes to find parking to be able to get to your class on time. read more

I took my boyfriend to this place as part of his Christmas gift in December because we both had been wanting to try it out. After checking Yelp, I chose this place based on the good reviews, smaller class size, and its proximity to my house. The place is located in downtown LA, so parking can be tough to find sometimes. The process was simple: you go to their website, reserve a time you want to go in (I booked for 26/2023 because it was closed on Christmas), and see who your instructor is based on the day's schedule. Payment is required when making the reservation. We opted for the one-time class, which costs $85 per person (it's expensive, but I couldn't find anything lower when searching online). When we arrived, the atmosphere was calm and chill. We were instructed to wear clothes we wouldn't mind getting dirty and no jewelry. The class consisted of a group of 8 people, and the instructor demonstrated what to do first while we watched, then we all did it together. My instructor was patient and kind, going around the class to ensure everyone was doing well. It was interesting to see everyone's bowls were very different in shape and sizes (I remember this one girl made a BIG bowl (like pho soup bowl size). That day, we made two bowls to take home. After finishing the class, you clean up and wait for an email notifying you that your creation is ready for pickup. You also get to pick the color of your glaze; for us, the choices were pink, white, and blue. I went to pick mine up last week, and I went to pick up my boyfriend's today because he is currently out of town. They only hold your pieces for a certain amount of time, so plan accordingly. When it's ready, you go in, find bags with your name in the corner, and leave. One of my bowls developed a crack during the glazing process, so they gave me another bowl to keep (I made 2 bowls and brought home 3 bowls). The only bummer was that I thought we would have the opportunity to carve the bowls after making them to add little designs, but we were not given that option (perhaps it was too advanced for a one-time class? i did the one-time lesson with my friend (we had no prior experience) and we absolutely loved it! for $90/person, you get like 1.5 hr in the studio to make two bowls (with instruction), you learn how to clean the stuff, and you get to choose the colors of the bowls you make! also, would recommend getting there early bc we were about 5 min late (LA traffic) and they were very punctual with starting on time. our instructor's name was peiwen and she was super chill and very hands-on when you requested it. one sad part is that it takes about 4-6 weeks to get ur creations back but that's really not an issue bc time passes anyway. would also recommend u don't wear dark colors bc the clay is very light and guaranteed to get on you! i think it'll wash off tho so no biggie. regardless, a 10/10 experience and i'd highly recommend it as a fun little thing to do. also the studio is so pretty and the vibes are super calm and relaxing! read more

My girlfriend and I had our very first pottery class with Amber, and it was an absolute blast! Amber is an outstanding instructor. She was friendly, vibrant, and incredibly informative. We learned so much while having a great time. So my co worker arranged for a 2 hour class in which we were able to learn to use the wheel and then we also made another bowl molding the clay. Our instructors were great and so patient with us. We had about 16 people in our group so they split us into two group and so half of us started on the wheel and other group did the clay molding method and then after an hour we switched so we both got a chance to learn both. I really enjoyed our instructors. Each of our instructors were very good at explaining the techniques that they were teaching. Using the wheel can get a little messy but they had aprons for us to us so that was nice. I really recommend Throw Clay LA and I would really consider coming back for their classes. read more

My wife and I took a one-time wheel throwing class. The class size was 8 people to 1 instructor which was nice and safe. Our teacher today was Bailey and she made the class easy going and enjoyable for first timers. Conceptually, it wasn't too difficult. Feeling the clay in my hands was rather soothing and watching everyone's bowl come together differently was very cool. In two hours time we made two bowls. I can't wait to see how they turn out with the glaze we chose for them. Wow it was our first time and we are already coming back next Friday! We had Ellie as our teacher and she was so lovely. She was so knowledgeable, sweet and helpful with direction and assistance when we needed it. You can tell she loved her job and the art of clay throwing. The studio was well organized, clean and a very welcoming space. I like that they had us in a semi-private area in the front of the garage so we could focus on the class. We started out with very detailed instructions and watched Ellie spin a bowl from start to finish. Then the fun part.. we got to make ours! Ellie went around and helped those who needed it. After you're done you get to choose from 4 colors (we both chose black). They make pickup easy by having you scan a QR code and enter in your contact information online. Cleanup was very easy! I'd definitely recommend this place for a cute date night or girls night out! It was fun being creative together and just laughing through our mistakes. My friend treated me out for a surprise pottery class on a Saturday morning and it was such a therapeutic and fun class! Just a tip: Wear short sleeved shirts for the pottery wheel session and take off jewelry and watches. We found parking in one of the public paid lots nearby and walked over to our class at 10 AM. The Saturday morning class includes a 2 hour instructor led pottery wheel and hand building combo class. This was a great introduction to pottery because we could experience both forms and I would highly recommend this option. We provided proof of Covid vaccination and ID before the class began. Aprons are also provided, but the clay comes off clothes easily after a good wash. Just a tip: To begin the session, I would recommend picking pottery wheel first, because the second group on the pottery wheel needs to wash the clay compartments. Our instructor for the pottery wheel was Nate and he was patient, hands on, and overall a great instructor. I enjoyed the pottery wheel a lot more because it's a whole body experience. Our instructor for hand building was Natalie, and she was also great, but soft spoken, so it was hard for us to follow along as we sat further away from her. In this session, we could either hand build a mug or a pot, and both are dish washer safe. After each session, we labeled our clay creations with our name and glaze color selection. When the class ended, we scanned a QR Code to get notified of when our creations would be ready for pick up. They sent me a notification for pick up within 1-2 weeks. I would definitely come back to make more pottery as it's a super fun hobby. read more

Good concept poorly executed though. Upon arriving I had to use the bathroom and the staff who was just sitting there wouldn't restock the bathroom and actually guided me where the toilet paper was? It was so weird like YOU work here not me. So for our group we all arrived on time except 1 couple showed up 30 min late. The instructor made everyone else wait until that couple showed up and didn't extend our time but just rushed it. That's not fair at all. We were only given 4 colors to choose from so that's a let down. And then when it was all over they made us clean up our stations so meticulously that I feel like that was more work than the actual pottery making. I don't know overall for the price of almost $200 this place isn't worth it at all. Was it fun? Yes. But there's a lot of room for improvement. read more

This is such a CUTE place!! My friend and I randomly booked a 1-time class, and we ended up having such a fun time. It was definitely a nice, relaxing break from the craziness of the pandemic and school. It was pretty pricey but typical for these types of classes in LA. $70 for 2 hours of pottery with the spinning wheel, and we get to take home the 2 pots we made! The staff there was super friendly and made me feel comfortable whenever I messed up or couldn't figured it out. Since the classes was small (8 people), he was able to dedicate 1-1 time help to each of us if we needed it! Went here for a bachelorette with a larger group so we were the only ones in the class. Danny was a great instructor who really helped us improve our skills. Compared to another pottery class I've taken, I learned a lot more and walked away with a better constructed piece. Please note, you don't glaze your own work; Throw Clay LA does that for you and you pick up the finished piece 3-5 weeks later. That could be a good or bad thing, depending on how much you want to do your own glazing. I was perfectly happy with picking a color from four given options. I think this intro class offers great value to beginners. We all had a great time and could not stop talking afterwards about how fun and relaxing it was. read more

I was able to find meter parking on the street on the same block. There were only 8 people allowed and mask were required. Plus, we were set up next to a garage door that opens so it was almost like being outside. Great covid protocols! We all had a great view of our instructor Marlon. He was so friendly and patient as everyone was a beginner. We made two items-bowls, and then we're able to choose the glaze color. Throwing can get a little messy, so maybe wear something you don't mind getting clay on, but it washes out. They contact you when your items are ready for pick up. We went here for a friend's birthday and we had a great time doing the 2-hour intro lesson! The instructor was awesome and she provided great directions. She was also checking on everyone throughout the lesson, sharing tips on how to improve our techniques and helping if things weren't going well. We luckily got to make 2 pieces, so if your first practice piece doesn't go well, you have another shot! They provide everything, including materials and tools, and they do the glaze for you, so once you've made your pieces, you choose a color and just pick up the finished piece in a couple weeks. It was a fun experience and a great way to see what pottery is all about, hoping to sign up for their 6-week long course at some point! [ Tips ] Wear something you don't mind getting dirty and also recommend wearing short sleeves, you might end up with clay all over you except for where the apron is (my shoes, legs, and arms had clay on them). Short nails are definitely easier, but they did a great job of providing alternate techniques for long nails. [ Parking ] We got lucky and found a metered street parking spot a block away, DTLA is sometimes tough for parking so I'd arrive early and plan to drive around a bit to find street parking or a parking lot and walk from there [ Reservations ] You need to make a reservation pretty far in advance, they only have 8 spots in their 2-hr Saturday classes so plan accordingly! read more

Took a one time pottery class here for my birthday a few months ago. The studio is cute and looks like a nice community space. We were the only 2 people in the group class so we were kind of excited to get more attention for the lesson, but unfortunately it totally went the other way. The instructor Danny was friendly but was also so lax and spent more time playing around his wheel and making his own creations than teaching and helping us learn. He actually created a few intricate pieces of his own during our time and we had to actively ask for support or just felt like we were doing the same thing for a long time without his attention. Strangely he kept mentioning that he could really chill because usually the class is full and he's always running around helping others. Also it was just weird to see him make complex pottery over and over in front us as we were just learning to make a bowl right, it didn't feel supportive. The process was still fun but just manage your expectations if you're actually wanting to explore pottery and learn. For a spontaneous thing to do, it's probably fine. When we went to pick up the pottery, it was hard to get any assistance and we were told to look through all the bags for our names, but they weren't even in order and all over the place. read more

During the course, I never felt rushed or pressured. John was reassuring as he checked-in several times during and even provided some demos on how specific steps/techniques. My experience at Throw Clay LA started with Galyn over text. She was so kind & helpful. Then once we got to the studio, we had the absolute best time with our instructor Aidan. I had a last minute situation, but she was so empathetic & patient. I had a blast taking the class with her. Her instructions were very clear & she made the class so fun!! I reached out to him to thank him for such a lovely space filled with beautiful people & asked if there were any classes with children.
