When we began the tour, in the Deschutes Brewery Restaurant, Theresa filled us with Beer 101 knowledge and even one of the Deschutes Brewmasters came out for a Q & A session. He answered all questions, no matter how mundane or stupid they may have been. While we were walking to our next destination, Theresa filled our time with PDX Historical facts, that most people may know or not and by the time we reached our final destination, Rogue Brewery, everyone was already feeling jolly & talking loud, she patiently let all parties be themselves and enjoy the moment. This walking tour takes you to three (3) Brewery Restaurant Pubs, 1) Deschutes Brewery 2) Pints Brewing and 3) Rogue Brewing. This tour is an easy walk through the Pearl and Old Town districts with no hills etc. Additonally, you may even be able to make new friends, just like us...We stayed at Rogue Brewery long after the tour ended and became real good friends with this other couple from Winnipeg Canada, who was on the tour also, whom we traded email addresses with. At one point, after only 2 breweries, 20 very drunk guys plowed into a brewery bathroom at once and I believe one tried to pee in the same urinal as my husband at the same time. We visited Latourell Falls, Shepperd's Dell, and Wahkeena Falls before ending at the iconic Multnomah Falls. Angela was incredibly knowledgeable and kept the tour interesting with all kinds of facts about the Gorge and the surrounding area. She even pointed out fresh blackberries along the way and showed us some banana slugs which, naturally, I was delighted by. I really appreciated that the tour wasn't just "look, waterfall!" Angela kept sharing little facts and observations that made the whole experience more interesting and gave us a better appreciation for what we were seeing. A beautiful way to explore the Gorge without having to figure out all the logistics yourself.

She gave us some great bonus insights beyond the standard tour -- like history of the places, including local tycoons, how roads were funded and how each section of the districts were divided. Not true with this company. Herb S. really knew his stuff - both about the food, the food carts, and Portland. He was entertaining and easy going and made the time fly by. We'd actually been to a different food tour with him several years ago, so it was great to reconnect at this new company - he was a delight then, and he's still a delight now! Herb is very personable and had tons of knowledge about the Portland food scene and city history, lots of fun stories, and a clearly warm, tight-knit connection with all the vendors on the trip. The carts we visited were varied in their cuisine and all incredible. The trip went so smoothly with all the little timing elements well-managed, and it was so fun to get to know the Eastside. The tour was an easy 3-hour walk, and even though we came during a heat wave, Herb stuck to the shady areas so it was as pleasant as could be. Also, our group's allergy concerns were graciously met - there was usually a replacement item rather than just having to skip the tasting at that location. I would strongly recommend Lost Plate to any tourist wanting to explore the cuisine of Portland - it was a highlight of our vacation for sure! It was interesting hearing about Nina the ghost and the stories connected to the tunnels. The part I didn't expect was learning more about the darker history of Portland, including human trafficking and shanghaiing. It was pretty disturbing to learn how these tunnels, which were originally used for things like trade and moving goods, were also connected to the exploitation of people. Overall, I thought the tour was really unique and worth doing, especially if you enjoy unusual history and learning about the less glamorous side of a city. It definitely gave me a different perspective on Old Town Portland. A few tips: watch your head because there are some low areas, and be aware that the tour involves stairs and some tighter spaces if you're claustrophobic. Definitely wear comfortable shoes! A very interesting and unexpected piece of Portland history.
