When: July 7, 2015 - Pearl District Walking Tour Our host, Theresa was an excellent tour guide filled with Beer 101 Knowledge, PDX Historical Fact tidbits, Friendliness and most importantly Patience. When we began the tour, in the Deschutes Brewery Restaurant, Theresa filled us with Beer 101 knowledge and even one of the Deschutes Brewmasters came out for a Q & A session. He answered all questions, no matter how mundane or stupid they may have been. While we were walking to our next destination, Theresa filled our time with PDX Historical facts, that most people may know or not and by the time we reached our final destination, Rogue Brewery, everyone was already feeling jolly & talking loud, she patiently let all parties be themselves and enjoy the moment. This walking tour takes you to three (3) Brewery Restaurant Pubs, 1) Deschutes Brewery 2) Pints Brewing and 3) Rogue Brewing. This tour is an easy walk through the Pearl and Old Town districts with no hills etc. Additonally, you may even be able to make new friends, just like us...We stayed at Rogue Brewery long after the tour ended and became real good friends with this other couple from Winnipeg Canada, who was on the tour also, whom we traded email addresses with. I definitely recommend this tour for any beer lover, whether a novice or expert, in craft beers...you will definitely appreciate the depth and understand why Portland and the Pacific Northwest in general, is the mecca for the Craft Beer Industry. read more

The Pacific Northwest is Best tour was pretty fantastic! Ben was our tour guide and he was great and funny. He was very knowledgeable about the beers we were drinking along with the area of the city we were traveling through. We learned about why Portland is one of the best brew spots in the country and learned some of the intricacies it takes to brew some delicious beer. The bus ride was fun and safe. We tried a good variation of beers and saw parts of the city we couldn't get to by foot. There are so many breweries all over Portland, big and small, and it was getting intimidating trying to figure out what to put on our vacation itinerary. Yelp led me to Brewvana, and after looking at the available options I went with the Behind the Scenes tour. The base fee I paid got us four decent sized at tastings each at four different bars, along with some eats at the third bar (some pizza, pickles, sweet potato hush puppies). You also get transportation between each brewery. Trust me on this - it's enough beer to get a decent buzz on. While you are allowed to drink on the bus, and the bar you meet at sells big cans for you to bring along, I don't recommend it. The drives aren't that long, and you have to leave your drinks in the bus at each stop. Even though my fiancee and I shared a 22oz can, after the second bar we conceded that it had gotten too warm to finish. Our tour guide Mike did a great job between telling us the brewing process, letting us know about Portland's beer culture, and keeping the samples flowing. And of course, driving us around without leaving anyone behind. These tours seem perfect for anyone visiting town, or any group that wants to be bussed around as they drink. read more

I had a good time but I just don't feel like it was worth the price at all... you really only get 3 full beers total if you add up the tiny pours. For $89! I see pics where it looks like groups had full flights of beer at the locations and large glasses full on the bus. We just had 3 or 4 little beers at each location and our guide picked them for us. A lot of the times I would have liked to try something else. We also had to take a little detour to pick people up at the old location due to poor communication on the emails (we almost did the same thing until I called while we were on the way). The "tour" started at 12:30 but we didn't have a sip of beer until 1:10...... not worth it. Sorry! I know this tour gets great reviews and it was fun, but I don't think I'd do it again. Ben was cool. Not entirely sure he wasn't high... but nonetheless, he was entertaining. read more

Mike was a great tour guide. Very informative and educational. We wanted a true beer nerd and that's what we got. We were a group of 13 and opted for the private tour with stops at Labrewtory, Ecliptic and Baerlic. All were great. Baerlic was the best. Only thing I would say was kind of a pain is carrying your glass to each stop. I am used to wine tasting where you have a fresh glass at each stop and don't have to think about it. read more

Jeff V. and I have a few brewery tours under our belt from the Southern California (San Diego) area and we are huge fans of dedicating an afternoon to brewery hopping and day drinking. We spotted the Brewvana Tour bus one Saturday afternoon around town and immediately I looked up Brewvana on facebook, became a fan of their page and then started conversing with Ashley. We booked our tour for Saturday where we visited 4 breweries with lunch included. There are special little touches that Ashley provides throughout the tour such as pretzel necklaces that come in handy for snacking later, name tags so you can be social with your group because at the end you are all buddies, souvenir glasses and waters in the mini fridge in the back of the bus. Not to mention the bus is really fun, comfortable and even is equipped with cup holders. I was very impressed with Ashley's upbeat personality, her fun jokes and most of all her knowledge of beer. We are looking forward to taking future tours and visiting different breweries that she works with for tours. My recommendation is to book a tour for all your of your out-of-town guests who love excellent beer. This tour has it all, bits of history about the city and even though it is a tour of breweries it covers a lot of Portland and parts that maybe out-of-town guests would have never visited or even seen. Ashely is a great tour guide that maps out all of the districts during the ride and provides recommendations on all the hot spots which is even useful for local Portlanders. First of all, how awesome is Portland?! Second, how awesome is Portland Beer?! Truth be told, we travelled to this fine city to gluttonise on beer and food. Yup, we know all about your tasty frothies in Australia. In fact, we spend a pretty penny to try them all. So, it was great for us to make our way to its homeland. After doing on research on Yelp, we had to book in Brewvana. We could see that they would be taking us too all the cool kids on the block. We were looking to taste some of those unique beers. And we definitely got what we paid for. There was a whole lot of beer to sample at Green Dragon, Lauralwood, Kennedy School, and Great Notion. Each brewery had its expertise. Loved trying beers brewed from botanicals rather than hops. Also, I was very excited to try my very first sour beers. Very very tasty stuff and something I really wish we had at home. Loved all the different flavours of beer too like the Great Notion Key Lime Pie, Blue Berry Muffin and the Double Stack Breakfast Stout. I think Great Notion was my fave. Best of all, Alice our guide was very very knowledgable on brewing technics and so much fun. There were a whole lot of laughs, high fives and good times. If you are total beer nerd or looking to learn more about beer, this is definitely worth booking. You'll make new friends and get to meet some of the Brewers themselves. After looking into it and finding out that it was indeed a brewery tour bus, we just had to do it. You are to meet at a gathering spot to get picked up in the morning for some morning brews. It's a great idea to take a bus there so at the end of the day you will have a sober ride home. The tour usually consists of 3 or 4 breweries where samples, beer education and sometimes lunch is provided. (We went to hopworks and took a tour of their great brewery). At the end of the day you have become friends with everyone on the bus and ready to keep going brewery hopping. Unfortunately this is where the tour ends. Time to get off the bus and go home. The bus drops you off at the spot where you chose to get picked up from and that's the end of the tour. Brewvana is definitely a great beer tour. This was money well spent. We did the Sunday tour, and my wife was a bit leery that it would be a bunch of staggering college drunks. Not the case. It was all younger to middle aged couples from a variety of locations. Our tour guide (Ashley, the founder) was very personable and knowledgeable about beer in general. We went to Gigantic, Bridgeport, and Stormbreaker breweries. While we didn't get to choose our beers, the sample size beers that Ashley had pre-chosen for us gave us a good sense of the variety at each location. Food (munchies...pizza, chips, etc) was provided at Bridgeport Brewing as well. The pretzel necklaces that were given out, beer guides, and beer trivia capped off a fun experience. Tip: They WILL arrive a half hour early at the pickup locations as stated on the receipts, so don't show up late and hold up the rest of the group. read more

Having hardly any knowledge of brewing and beer but wanting to plan a fun event for my beer-loving fiancé's birthday, I booked a tour with Brewvana. It was excellent. We toured three breweries and one cidery. Our guide, Liz, truly made the tour memorable with fun knowledge about the various locations as well as interesting information about the city itself. She really made it easy for the small group to come together and enjoy the tour together. Further, she was able to find beers people liked even when they said they didn't enjoy a particular type. My favorite stops were Ex Novo and Cider Riot. This tour is perfect for people who know nothing about brewing and people who are experts, as they cover the full gamut of information. Went on a beer tour for our mini honeymoon in Portland. It was definitely a great experience. We ordered 2 gift specials, but you only need to order 1 for a pair. The special comes with 2 glasses, 1 growler, 2 cookies, 1 beeriodic table of elements poster, and a pin. I think we got the 'hoppily ever after' pin. We chose to get picked up from our hotel so we didn't have to worry about getting to the pick up point. We got a small growler at the pick up point so we could drink on the bus as we traveled to each location. But there is no shortage of beer if you don't want to do that. Our favorite place was the Kennedy school location as it's history was interesting on top of the good beer. Stellar! First of all, Alex, the tour guide, did a tremendous job breaking the ice with those on the tour. Alex was able to manage a group of 14 intoxicated tourists with confidence and grace. By the end of the tour, an outsider would have guessed that this group of people from all over the country had been friends for decades. We went to four breweries, all of which were extremely informational for both the novice and master beer connoisseur. Rick at Baerlic provided the most information about hops, malt, yeast, and the overall art of brewing beer. The best beer was at Hopworks Urban Brewery. Being a New Yorker myself, I appreciated the lager most. Overall, I had the best experience I have ever had on a tour. This was an awesome tour. I had looked at maybe doing something self guided and talked myself out of it for a few reasons: 1. Not knowing the city well enough to get around easily, 2. Not wanting to drive between locations if I had more than a little to drink 3. There are SO many options in Portland, I just couldn't even begin to narrow it down So I booked the tour for a Friday evening, turned my brain off, and just enjoyed the ride (literally and figuratively). We were a small group, led by the amazing Ariel, and we enjoyed a lazy brew or two around the city. Highlights were: labrewatory for their location, ambiance and selection as well as the amazing snacks (but really more like dinner) at BTU Brasserie. Went back to Portland a couple weeks ago for a friend's birthday. I decided to book a Brewvana tour again since I had such a great time the first time I visited Portland. This time I opted for the Mississipin' walking tour. And let me just say Stephen and Theresa were such great tour guides! They were very knowledgable about beer (duh) and were entertaining and attentive. We had so much fun sampling beer, walking around the little neighborhood around the breweries, and just enjoying good company. Out of the three breweries we visited, I'd say Ecliptic was my favorite, the Aurora Saison was THE ONE. So tasty and refreshing especially since it was pretty warm out, definitely a change from the first time i visited in February. The perfect tour for the time of year. Awesome awesome tour. Must do if you're staying in Portland and either love beer or want to learn more. The tours are a great way to see a lot of weird and funky things happening in Portland. One part of our tour even included a chocolate and beer tasting with a chocolate company called Ranger chocolates that take the chocolate from bean to bar. Nothing crazy added to it besides sugar and cacao. Our tour guide Kelene was hilarious and just as importantly crazy knowledgeable about all things beer and all things Portland. I can't rave enough about how much fun this was. My fiance and I were visiting Portland from Denver, and stumbled upon Brewvana on google. Both of us are avid beer drinkers and brewery enthusiasts (we've been to probably 40 - 50 together) so we figured this was the thing for us. Nikki was our tour guide and she was great - super energetic and fun. Definitely made the overall experience a blast. I've never done a brewery bus tour but I've heard they can often be questionable, but this one was very professionally run. It was very organized, personal and you could tell Nikki had great relationships with the employees of the breweries we visited. We did the Saturday tour which took us to four breweries (Coalition, Hopworks, Burnside and Lompoc). The samples at each brewery were very generous. You can drink in between stops on the bus, but we honestly didn't feel the need except for in between brewery #1 and #2 when we had some sour beer since we weren't sure we'd get any that day. It's good to have the option though! You get lots of neat swag too. A brewvana pilsner glass that you get to keep, a pretzel necklace (which I had finished by brewery #2), and a little beer journal which is fun but forgettable after a while. Some of the breweries also gave us promotional items. We sampled 3 - 4 beers at each brewery. There was a nice variety but also some simliar styles so you could taste differences between breweries. We got some appetizers at one brewery, but it was nothing substantial - just enough to keep you going. We did an actual brewery tour at one of the breweries which was pretty standard if you've done a brewery tour, but we did get to drink straight out of the finishing tank which was awesome! Freshest beer I've ever tasted! Brewvana is definitely targeted to the more novice beer drinkers, but I didn't feel out of place being a big craft beer guy and homebrewer. Nikki did a great job of getting to know everyone personally and having conversations based on your knowledge of beer. My only negatives is that I always felt a little rushed. It would have been nice to have more time at each brewery - but I also realize that I am a seasoned beer drinker and not everyone may be able to handle more than 4 hours of drinking. Although I will say it was nice to be done with the tour and not be completely hammered (it could very easily be done though so be careful). Another negative was that there was an extremely annoying and obnoxious person on our tour, so much so that everyone else was noticebly embarassed by her. However, that's beyond the control of Brewvana so I won't fault them for that, and it didn't taint my experience much. Also, you do get some funny looks and laughs when the bus pulls up to the breweries, but hey - who cares. You will probably be having way more fun than they are. Didn't really bother me. The price may seem steep upfront, but if you consider how much taster flights are at most breweries, the free appetizers, the free stuff and the fact you're getting driven around town then I think you definitely come out ahead. If you do a Brewvana tour with a good attitude a desire to have fun you'll be sure to have a great time. read more

Was there last Saturday, and me and my buddy and his bachelor party was regaled with tours of the city in between breweries, as well as fully informed about the 15 beers we tasted at three of Portland's best breweries. Lizzie had the jars with barley, hops, and malt, and gave us the opportunity to explore the basics as well as hook us up with recommendations for the rest of the trip. My girlfriend and I went on the Brewvana tour yesterday with Nikki and had a blast! It was a great time for so many reasons. First, we were staying in a hotel downtown so we never would have had the chance to drive all of the city and see the different mini-towns and communities that are spread out through Portland. Nikki also shared a lot of information about the sights we were seeing and tried to sum up the flavor the different neighborhoods The choices for breweries were excellent and gave us a range of environments from actual brew house tours, to tasting rooms, to sit down restaurants. Speaking of restaurants, the food stop at the third brewery was worth the whole trip itself. Trays of 6-7 samples per person, including a crazy Chili-chocolate Heffiwiesen and unbelievably good food. Mac N' Cheese is all I have to say. Good call to have a stop to soak up some of the beer. The tour was a great choice and I highly recommend it to anybody visiting Portland. Knowing Portland is famous for its beers, and being beer enthusiasts, we knew we had to go on a beer tour while visiting the city. We ended up booking with Brewvana's walking tour in the Pearl District with Kelene as our guide. The tour was great except it was nearly 100 degrees that day but that was just another reason to drink a nice cold brew. The tour was very organized and met at the first site, which was Deschutes. After sampling the beer from Deschutes, we walked about a half mile to Pints before ending our tour at Rogue. Kelene was great and knowledgeable about the city and the beers we were drinking. In the beginning, she asked all of us to introduce ourselves and name the types of beers we love so she can help pick out beers for the tour. All of the beers she picked at the last two stops were based on the types favored by the tour group. I was concerned that we would be drinking only with only our pretzel necklace to eat, but our last stop at Rogue included pizzas and tater tots. Tour was canceled without notification Booked a tour through Living Social to go on a craft brewery tour on Tuesday during the day. The night before, I received what must have been an automated an e-mail to confirm my spot on the tour, saying to meet at a brewery10 minutes before the start of the tour. It all seemed so organized, so it came as a surprise to me the next day that no one came to pick me up. I waited around and eventually walked into the brewery and had a beer. I called the offices, and they had apparently forgotten to let me know that the tour was canceled due to low enrollment, which was why no one from Brewvana had come out to meet me. So that brew tour was a bust. So why two stars? The lady who was on the phone with me was extremely apologetic and nice and offered to send me a care package to make up for it. They also tried to credit me for the tour, but it has to go through Living Social first. There you go -- good customer service, poor organization. read more
