It's a very dusty path up, so make sure to wear some proper hiking shoes and clothing that you don't mind getting dirty. I wore a white, button-up t-shirt and jeans because my in-laws failed to tell me we were going hiking before stopping at the motel. But it was such a light hike that it didn't bother me too much aside from getting my clothes dusty and dirty going up and then coming back down. At the top of the trail resides Eagle Rock, which comprises of sharp, volcanic rock. So definitely be careful while up there. For those with mobility issues, the path does not extend all the way up to the top. So you will have to clamor over some rocks in order to reach the summit. But once up top, you'll get treated to a gorgeous top-down view of Lake Tahoe to one side, and beautiful forest covered mountains on the other. The trail is dog friendly, but there are no trash cans along the path. So make sure to take back out anything you bring in. There is a small, free parking lot at the entrance to park at.

Coming here alone this morning and connecting with nature by myself brought about feelings of peace and solitude, it was very nice having the entire place to myself. I was very grateful for this moment alone with nature.

My boyfriend…read morehad always wanted to check out the Donner Petroglyphs, and I stumbled across the rail tunnels when looking for things to do while in the area. We parked at the Donner Ski Summit - if you are looking to check out this hike, that is the best place to park and access the start of the tunnels. I truly enjoyed this hike, but was ill prepared. I was fully committed once we were in the tunnels & I should have went back to the car and swapped my "barefoot" style shoes for my hiking boots. The large chunk gravel path killed my feet with the thin soles of the shoes I wore. We hiked through about 5-6 tunnels before heading back. We did a total of 6 miles in and back. There were alot of beautiful street art within the tunnels, we found 19 cave ghosts along the trail as well as some other reoccurring variations of different items over the course of the trail. I would like to eventually take the trail past the last tunnel and to the next set of tunnels some day. This is a trail we would do again next time we are in the area. Though the weather was nice, we both wore hooded sweatshirts as the are in the tunnels got quite chilly. If you plan on checking these trails out, take well charged flashlights or head lights with extra batteries. The tunnels can be PITCH Black when you are in the heart of them. Overall this was a really cool thing to see and I would love to do it again with the correct shoes!

We were looking for Burton Creek State Park, and the instructions in the park tour book said that the trail starts from North Tahoe High School. So we drive along North Lake Rd, make a left on Old Mill Rd, and another left on Polaris, and voila, there's a nice recently paved road and parking lot in front of the school. We drive around and no trail to be seen. Have the wife check with a teenager and her friends and they say the trail is next to the parking lot. Drive completely around the vast parking lot and school and run into the same teenager. Embarassed, I have the wife ask again. The teen rolls her eyes. Dumb and dumber! She says its on the side of the parking lot near the soccer field. We find the trail, just touching the edge of the parking lot a ways from the soccer field. No signs, until we are 100 yards along the path. Sign says no motorbikes but mountain bicycles OK, and dogs OK. Wide trail, the right size for a service trail, with gradual inclines, and relatively smooth. No big boulders nor obstacles along the 5 mile loop through the deep forests, with maps at every intersection, and glimpses to the south of the vast blue Lake Tahoe. A very few people walking the dog, but lots of mountain bicyclists, during our 2 hour walk through the vast forests. Turns out this is a hiking/mountain bike park in the summer, and a cross country ski area in the winter, hence the trail maps, and absence of boulders and shrubbery along the service road wide areas of the pathway. No toilets, no drinking water, but plenty of privacy to do your thing in the bushes. We stop for a lunch break, but quickly change our minds, as the yellow jackets are out in force -at least the wife didn't get stung during a pit stop, where the sun don't shine!. The last part of the trail back to the connecting trail to the high school is a killer - a very steep uphill incline more suited for downhill skiing than cross country skiing. No mountain bike going up that incline! Arriving at the high school, my wife takes a wrong step and lands her new hiking boot in a some wet asphalt pooling on the edge of the just paved parking lot. She takes off her shoe, and is attacked by a swarm of yellow jackets. She launches into a tirade that would make Trump blush. I have to drive the car over to rescue her and her tarred boot, which is finished for this trip! Welcome to high school!

It'll give you access to waterfront dining like Jake's on the Lake, beaches like Commons Beach, water sports like kayaking and stand up paddle boarding on the lake or rafting on the Truckee River, and parks such as Sugar Pine Point all the way down the west shore of Lake Tahoe. We came upon this trail while we were camping at Tahoe SRA. The trail goes right by the campground and snakes down to the lake. The campground host told us that if we wanted to use the park's pier or rent kayaks at Commons Beach, we'd have to go down this trail. We did and found that it's great for all of those things. We even went down the trail a little after 10 pm to take a look at the stars. We saw the Big Dipper, the North Star, and the Milky Way! If you're in Tahoe City, bike or walk on this trail!

If you find yourself near like a kids school/daycare type area in a large parking lot, you are not in the right spot. Cross to the opposite side of the stream where the apartments are. The trail is ideal after snow melt. We went first at the end of May and were greated by a lovely downhill stream with lots of waterfalls . Now going in September sadly it was all dried up. So keep that in mind based on when you want to visit.

Unfortunately, it wasn't open to the public yet, but we got to see the exterior and peek into the windows to see the interior. Great experience, nonetheless. It's connected right along the water and a dock where we got to sit and relax for a while and take in the fresh air and cold water. It was sunny this day, so we got in, but don't let the sun fool you... the water was ice cold still. Easy hike down, but definitely can be exhausting going back up. You're basically walking at a steep incline the entire time.

Just a heads-up on the trail getting there: it is definitely a tough, rugged hike. The path is full of rocks and kept completely natural, so you really have to watch your footing. Honestly, coming back down was just as much of a workout and challenge as hiking up. But once you reach the destination, the sheer beauty of the falls makes every single step worth it. It's actually made up of several different falls cascading down the mountainside right into Cascade Lake below. Getting close to that cold, refreshing mountain water felt incredible after the trek. The drive from our hotel in South Lake Tahoe was only about half an hour, making it the perfect, easy half-day adventure. If you're up for a bit of a rocky scramble, don't miss this one!

Maybe not so much for my mom because she was lowkey struggling since it started to become a rocky trail, the closer you get to the waterfall. It's not a smooth, walk-in-the-park trail, since it's rocky, so just be prepared! I've seen lots of people use hiking sticks or trekking poles-- they were definitely prepared. The view at the end is definitely worth it!
