I needed a keypad upgrade to my residential security gate door, which has a tricky interior layout…read more Not made for anything much larger than a deadbolt cylinder, and pre-dated most keypad locks. I researched a bunch of brands online, but the nature of the metalwork on the door turned this into more job than I could handle. I reached out to a few locksmiths in town, some that I've had good experiences with in the past, but everyone had the same line: you'll need a metalsmith to make alterations to the door in addition to locksmith services. Turns out Alex is also a metal worker, and has a lot of experience working with San Francisco security gates. He talked me through what he referred to as a "light industrial" setup, explaining the benefits and lower energy consumption of this solution. I didn't really need a wi-fi compatible smart lock, just a dependable keypad lock that I could easily set up and add/delete individual codes on. He answered on my first call, took the time to explain what would work best for my situation, offered free advice on a second door that saved me from having to do a retro-fit, got me on the schedule only a few days after I called, and did the installation in under an hour. Will definitely call Alex/Nova Locksmith again, and highly recommend them.

The reason he has one star is because I can't post zero stars…read more I had a two hour window. He did not show up in that window. I was at the residence before during and after that window. He said he would call 30 minutes before arrival. 45 minutes after he was scheduled there was still no call. We called him multiple times from the number he's aware of and at no time did he answer. I called him one time from a different number and he answered immediately saying I'll call you right back without knowing who I was. I then canceled the appointment and told him so. I also left a location after being there for two hours and 45 minutes without hearing from him. Then he wrote back with some tremendously grand excuse about a domestic violence situation that apparently he was fixing the locks in the middle of. If that's true, I'm sorry for whoever was a part of that and don't want that energy in my home. If that's not true, which is where I'm leaning, that just confirms why this man should be avoided at all cost. If you need locksmithing done, call a person who actually values you, your time, and their commitments to you and your families safety. This man seems unstable and most likely unsafe given the excuse he provided.

He then 30 seconds later after accepting price tried to upcharge me by an additional $40. I asked why and he said "the lock is old". Then I was able to negotiate back down. He was unable to open the lock anyway and suggested replacing lock completely and said "this will cost a lot more" and further asked for service fee, which he tried to upcharge from quoted price as well. I then tried to confirm who he works with and he told me he doesn't know the name of the employer because he doesn't speak English well. Did not allow him to break the lock down and replace. Overall had a poor experience and quite uncomfortable, but he did get there quickly within about it 20 min as he promised.

The guy answered and said his "agent" would call me but he's on his way. Eventually an East Bay number called at 9:50pm, and said he'd be there in 30 mins. I asked how much the price would be and he said anywhere from $85 to $140. After waiting almost an hour and a half, he finally showed up at 11:10pm and told me my apt lock was "commercial" and the "driving fee" from the East Bay is $150 on its own and this lock is actually $270 -- but he'd take $180 on Zelle immediately. He then unlocked my door in about 8 seconds. Being that it was almost midnight and I'm a woman alone, I had no choice. I'm not sure why a "driving fee" would be relevant to a business that advertises itself as LOCAL. I could have called the plenty of other SF-based locksmiths and 1) not had to wait much longer than promised 2) not been pressured into a payment that was well over the price that was quoted.
