Need to improve the phone system. It should not take endless time and attempts to reach someone. I've spent more than 30 minutes trying to get in touch with someone with NO success. I had to get direct primary care and health share because I did not qualify for Medicare until December 2026. I retired and was under my husband's insurance until he was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer and went out on disability. Had I gotten regular insurance it would have been 1050 a month with a 10,000 deductible. That was the least expensive! I needed a cortisone shot in my foot which Dr. Maloof had performed several times and was excellent in his precision. I needed to self pay and was told by their manager"Missy" that the practice would not see me even though I offered to pay upfront. She wouldn't even ask Dr. Maloof to see me. I could not believe this. At a time when insurance is off the charts, why would this be their policy? This is what happens when medicine is handled like a cooperation! read more

I cannot comment on Dr. Higgins' surgical skills since I only met him on a consultation basis. But it is my opinion, he has the personality of a brick! Maybe he was having a bad day. Like most Surgeons I have previously encountered (who are known to perform excellent surgical work) they tend to have zero personality. Maybe I passed along dark Karma and he sensed it? My mother has a work related injury. Tidewater orthopedic in Hampton has been amazing every step of this process. Her surgeon, Dr. Nicholas Sablan informed her of her condition. Surgery was performed at Hampton Careplex in November. Aftercare is still at the Tidewater Orthopedic office in hampton. I am thankful to all staff to help her in a smooth transition of recovery. read more

Dr. Compalattoro and Dr. maloof are top notch surgeons, and their staff are wonderful, empathetic, and knowledgeable . The surgical center is excellent also. The Administrative end of Tidewater is quite the opposite. They are billing a year after the procedure. I have spent 5++ hours call the billing office without return calls. My secondary provider performed a thorough audit of all 8 visits and contacted the billing office that medicare and Blue Cross had covered all bills and I bore no liability for any of the bills. I also have copies of the EOB to prove it. Yet, they have turned the bills over to Millenium, a NY based billing agency who is now hounding me. There appears to be no way to escalate the issue to senior management, so the issue festers. read more

They don't care about their patients. Beginning process is great however you won't get calls back and no follow up. Administration staff pass the bucks. Make promises that you will get a call back. Incomplete ppwk to your disability office. Days and days of delays regarding notes. I'm sorry to say I made this choice to use them. In your presence everyone is helpful walk out the door you are done. You are a number and a low number at that. I'm still not right after surgery. This makes me really angry and sad. The second surgery will not be done. 3:24 pm I get a call today from office but the person don't leave a message. I call back 8 minutes later they person is gone. If I have major concerns this staff don't feel the need to leave a message so you can reach them directly. read more

Definitely would not recommend this facility. I was involved in a car accident and was referred to this facility to see a specialist/Dr. Attempting to just schedule the visit was difficult after being honest about my injuries. Being a professional business you expect professional results and treatment. I get that this practice doesn't participate in litigation for the reasons of they possibly don't want to deal with billing or issues with being subpoenaed to discuss their billing practices or diagnosis however if an individual is using their personal insurance and want quality service what is there to hide unless you're practices are somehow unethical or unjustifiably. If my child needed services I wouldn't recommend this facility just because of the experience I received and leads me to question if I didn't have alternatives and this is how the consultation starts I can only expect lackluster beyond. Shouldn't be that difficult in my opinion. They will probably drown this survey to save face on google reviews but I place on making a more formal complaint as well. I wish I had read the reviews before I decided to visit this place. Went in for a simple cortisone shot to relieve pain. Doctor returns with the syringe but I question whether cortisone was even in it. He told me the pain would subside in a few days. TEN days later pain level still the same. I am of the belief that I did not get cortisone just so I could return and sign up for physical therapy. How do I know this? Recently (Oct. 2024) I had my right hip replaced. The experience was exceptional in terms of the pre-surgical visit with the Dr. - John H. Matthews who is relatively new to Tidewater Orthopedics. My experience could not have been better and based on several visits with Dr. Matthews, work with the physical therapy personnel and their team approach to patient care, should you need hip replacement surgery, I could not recommend him and the practice more highly. From discussing what was needed based on looking at the Xray film to explaining the steps pre and post operation, I knew what was going to be done and my role at rehabilitation efforts. And I was seen within days of knowing that I had a real problem. Dr. Matthews listens, has a manner about him that is reassuring, knowledgeable and caring. As relatively new to the Williamsburg area, I don't believe that I could have done better in terms of a doctor and organization with which to work. Very professional in the fullest sense of the word. There is followup care still required but I felt it important to let others know what I know - there is great quality care waiting for you if it is needed. read more

My Dad had an appointment today with Dr. Maloof regarding his Achilles tendon. They determined he has tendonitis, however, the doctor never showed my father his x-rays or explained his findings or how he determined the diagnosis nor did he explain treatment options. They tossed him in a boot but never showed him how to take it on or off, how to appropriately walk with it, drive with it or when or how long he should wear it. The nurse who put it on for him wasn't even sure how tight it should be and had to ask someone else if he should be able to lift his heel while it was in the boot. The entire appointment felt rushed as if they just wanted to shoo him out in order to accommodate more patients rather than focus on patient care. The doctor gave an information sheet on tendonitis rather than to offer any teaching to him in person which is great to have for a reference but not as a substitute for direct patient teaching. It's also in fine print that I'm 100% sure my Dad will never read or even be able to reference later on. Really frustrated and disappointed in this place and this doctor. read more

From the phone call to make the appointment to scheduling the MRI, Dr. Sablan and the entire staff at Tidewater Ortho are phenomenal. As parents of a young athlete, the sense of urgency was felt throughout our visit and treatment. The front desk staff was patient and helpful. Terrible! Money grab practice! First they make you see PA to generate revenue "useless" appt.. Admin staff, office manager PA-C DiMauro. Arrogant, rude, goofy, and smug. I feel these PAs forget they are not doctors. He gave no medical advice just BS opinions on what he won't do! Thinking that I don't know he has significant limitations on what he can do. I requested a 2d opinion w. MD. He told me "good luck with that" meaning he would sabotage any attempt for my husband to get seen by a MD at the private practice. I saw Dr. Kingston for FKR. No issues with treatment, very pleased with results. BEWARE of the administrative side of this practice! Faxed my disability paperwork to them PRIOR to surgery, followed up 10 days later & was told they were "about 4 months" behind looking at faxes. Delays resulted in me not getting disability payment until I was back @ work 5 weeks later. And the fun continues, 6 months later. Paid the patient estimate prior to surgery. Two months later received documentation from insurance company that showed I overpaid by $1,000. Billing office promised I would get refund in July. It's the end of August & I'm still trying to get back my overpayment. They don't have a problem sending out bills but heaven help you if you've overpaid! read more

I had an f/u appointment with robert mason for I will not say Dr. Robert Mason for I felt as though he took my money and in the end I was left with a blank look like what just happen. I walked out the door the same way I walked in and he passed the buck to Spine Department for he doesn't have a clue when question about his profession. Yes, I went with question on a clip board and he said don't quote me for he seen me writing down everything. Guess what I left with over all the doctor said NOTHING!!!!!!! He can not do anything until I go back to spine but I went to this facility for a second opinion? A lot of run away for he had me during X-ray's before I could tell him my whole name........ I had pain in my foot and made an appointment with Dr. Maloof. The staff was very polite and helpful. After x-rays and exam it was determined I had a stress fracture. Dr. Maloof explained his course of action and I was sent to the "parts department" (crutches, wheelchairs, boots etc,). Thea was very professional and gave me all the time needed. I'm now in a boot and expect to be as close to normal as I can be in about 6 weeks. The office staff, Dr. Maloof and his "crew", and Thea made me feel they cared. I would not recommend Tidewater Orthopedics. I have been to twice as many appointments than were necessary. One such appointment was, "Your bloodwork is negative for arthritis so we need to schedule an MRI." Could this not be done over the phone? The second unnecessary appointment was, "We don't know what's wrong. We're referring you." For that particular appointment I waited almost an hour. I'm pretty sure if I showed up that late and simply apologized I would still have to pay for the visit and make yet another appointment. Whether they make you come in for results to fatten their wallets or their calendar, it's a complete waste of time. Allowing results to be given over the phone might just free up enough time in their calendar to be on time for the patients. read more

What I like about this practice, is when you have an appointment, you are seen on time and on schedule in my experience. My recent visit started on time, included X-rays, and injection, and I was done in less than 40 minutes. Dr. Sablan is personable, tells it like it is, and excellent overall. If you are looking for a practice that lacks care and compassion and treats you as an inconvenient number, this is the place for you. Anticipate a long wait prior to seeing a PA (not a doctor) who treats you as simply the next number (I am sure they have seen it all before). They have a well trained operator staff that will never allow you to speak with anyone regarding your concerns. Look forward to being directed to an obscure voice mail where your message is not returned. I have been in the worst pain of my life for over a week; they could care less and tell me there is nothing else they can do. There was literally 3/4 doors opening randomly requesting names of patients to come back for their appointment. The Doctor we visited was Dr. Salban..he was very nice with a great bedside manner. Dr. Payne did a fine job on my shoulder, and the rehab center was a pleasant positive place to visit. The only negative was that the billing was an absolute mess. I paid so many bills, with each time the person saying that this would be the last, only to have another bill come from the same office. I don't mind paying what I owe, but it honestly felt like I was being overcharged due to their lack of keeping up with payments. Also, they never sent an itemized bill to make it clear what was owed and why. It was always just an amount with no clarification as to what made up that charge. In the end, I just paid the bills until they stopped coming because I hate the constant hassle. Still, I'm left with a bitter taste regarding the experience. read more

Some good, some bad things about this practice. 1) They charged me a co-pay for the final visit after surgery - not typical. Billing doesn't answer the phone. 2) Their office has some great people, but wow is it disorganized and doesn't communicate well between units (ie: between PT and the drs) 3) A woman who called me before the surgery was about the rudest person I've encountered in any office, ever. 4) The PT staff at both offices, however, is really great. read more

I had recent knee replacement surgery- my doctor, Dr Higgins, is amazing but the admin staff is worst I have seen at Tidewater Ortho. I requested my refill of pain meds on Sunday because I know it takes them awhile to get it ready. You have to pick up a paper RX for controlled substances in case you didn't know. You also have to have your leg chopped off to even be considered to get an RX now days. Well I have been calling and being put on hold for 13-24 minutes a piece to find out if it's ready yet- it's now Wednesday. After 4 attempts to get my name out and ask my question before I get hung up on -I am told "oops, the doctor hasn't even been given the message yet" Now, I am waiting for a call back to let me know that it's ready. When and if they call....I have to find a ride to doctors office (without pain relief this is excruciating) go in wait in line- ask for RX- hopefully they can find it (it's been lost before and they had to do a whole new one while they ran around looking for different people that need to sign for it) Then when they do hand you the "golden paper" you have to get your ride to now take you to a pharmacy to drop it off. Then if you are lucky you can come back with another driver, and pick it up within an hour. Then you feel like a crack head cause you are in so much pain you can barely smile and thank anyone. At some point during this....I have to get my walker and drag my ass into some school in ghetto neighborhood to vote- also have to have a driver for this. It's 2:12 and dr office close at 4:30 and polls at 6:00pm. I have spend my entire morning on phone and have gotten nowhere. I could get pain meds faster on the street most likely and have time and aggravation in check. So I need a driver to help me for next 4 hours who doesn't expect me to smile and make small talk and will also keep me from losing my tempter at dr office and end up in jail. Anyone free? I am not at Tidewater ortho but I am hoping, in vain I am sure, that someone there will see this and do something so others don't have this horrible experience. As a side note: the on hold music will make you want to kill yourself- yes, I've mentioned it. That music can set the tone of the whole experience and it has you feeling like you are on a carousel doing 140 miles an hour the entire time- I bet if they had to listen to that for 13-20 min 4 times a day - they would quit their job after a day. Get it together people. Someone needs fired. read more

They scheduled an appointment for me with the PA, Christian Johansson, the same day I called for knee pain. I called at 8am and was in by 9:40am. Christian was very professional. While they are quick to check you in and take your money, I had to wait 30+ minutes for both of my 7:30 a.m. appts (first appt. of the day). And when I questioned Dr. Higgens about this, he became very defensive and mad, screamed at me "you probably have cancer and we will probably have to cut off your leg!". Sent me for X-rays, CAT scan, MRI, specialist consult because they said I had a bone tumor. 8K later, turns out it was only soft-tissue inflammation. Will never visit this facility again. read more
