The sand here is white and like quicksand, so soft. Best time to go is early in the morning or after 3pm otherwise impossible to find parking. You can walk through the inlet (in water - if youre under 5'8" youre going to get more than your legs wet) and then over to the beach...if you walk north, its less busy and you feel like youre on your own remote beach. Its not a deep beach so in areas near parking it can get crowded, but if youre up for a walk, its worth it! read more

If I was hunting for seashells, this might be a good beach, but I probably wouldn't come back just for a beach day. Tigertail Beach is a unique destination and an adventure for visitors to Marco Island, a corner of Florida surrounded by the Everglades and mangrove islands. The beach is named after a Seminole leader and what makes it so special is that it is divided by a tidal lagoon. The developed lagoon side is an important bird habitat and it has amenities like a playground and restrooms. To reach the beach side you wade through the lagoon which is about 50 yards and which allows you to reach the waters of the Gulf. If you prefer not to walk through the lagoon you can walk around the lagoon to the south to reach the beach in about 20 minutes. The main part of Tigertail Beach across from the lagoon is Sand Dollar Island or Sand Dollar Spit. The area was an off shore sandbar completely surrounded by water until the winds of Hurricane Wilma and erosion connected it to Marco Island. It is known for its incredible deposits of sand dollars, giving it the name and making it a favorite spot to find sand dollars and shells. Adjacent to the park is Big Marco Pass Critical Wildlife Area managed by the state and it is a resting site for a variety of migratory shorebirds. Tigertail Beach is a birding hot spot during spring and fall migration. It is a part of the Great Florida Birding Trail, one of the longest running programs of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. The trail consists of more than 500 wildlife viewing sites across the state. Things to keep in mind, if you are going to to the beach pack what you can carry if you plan on crossing the lagoon. This is my bittersweet review of Tigertail Beach. I was recently on Marco Island, and one of our stops was Tigertail Beach. We had been there many years ago and had fond memories of a very cool beach. Boy, were we sad to see what it has turned into. First - the good. Nice facilities (under repair, but nice when working) and a great little playground for the kiddos. Little trails take you around the dunes and along the beach. Next - the sad. The "beach" has turned into a bit of a "mucky" experience. Gone is the nice, soft sand of a standard beach. Mangroves have taken over the "tail". It's just not what it once was. Worth a stop? Perhaps. I'd recommend looking into the conditions and factoring that into your goals of visiting. There are many other white, sandy beaches you can relax on. read more

I came here on a Saturday morning with my family. You pay $10 for all day parking for all Marco Island beaches. They recommended to park closer to the boardwalk since the beach was a bit of trek. They were not kidding. It was pretty far to walk to the beach. You turn left for the beach and right for the lagoon. The lagoon has a lot of birds if you're interested in looking at wildlife. The beach has the Gulf of Mexico which is supposed to be clearer and have warmer water than the Atlantic but to be honest, I couldn't tell haha. There were a lot more seashells and they weren't as broken. Also, the sand was whiter. The beach was really empty. It was a nice beach but the walk was really far so I probably would not come here often. read more

The Good: For ten dollars you have access to the Gulf beach. The Bad: it is a 20 min walk The Ugly: No Bathrooms!!! The Bathroom truck on the parking lot is open but flooded( with toilet water) no toilet paper, and the sink doesn't work- it should be closed. There is another one still at the far end of the lot. I didn't go in that one, it was being cleaned. The cleaning lady SENT ME TO THE OTHER BATHROOM - the condition of this restroom did not happen over night! We made the Mistake of thinking the lagoon( total muck) was the beach, until we asked someone walking past us. Once we made it to the beach, we had a lunch packed and planted our butts on the same for the afternoon. LOTS of shells so have something for your feet! read more

Loved going to such a secluded beach! The trek from the parking lot to the beach is no joke and the sand is very full of shells so make sure to keep your shoes on (it is helpful that the sand is pretty compacted and easy to walk on though). The beach itself is really white sand and the water is pretty clear! Not super blue but the water is definitely warmer than most other beaches all year round. You can easily just float in the water as the beach doesn't seem to get many waves or swells. When low tide, it can be pretty rough with the amount of shells but as soon as you go farther out into the water, the sand is soft and there are barely any shells. Paying $10 for the day is worth it, but we usually don't stay the whole day so it was a little expensive to park at a beach. It is worth it for the seclusion though. read more

After a year of not visiting Tigertail beach I feel really disappointed of going back. They restrooms have been out of order for over more than a year. I used the restrooms they have on a trailer and I have to say people are discussing leaving toilet full of feces , sanitary pads and blood. Not only that there was some many dead flies it was crazy to enter . I really regret not taking photos but this bathrooms are not getting cleaned whatsoever . read more

A beach unique beach in Marco island! $10 to park all day with restroom facilities, educational information and kids playground. When you park your car you can either walk straight through the water and mangroves or you can park more to the left and walk around the water. Both are a long walk and I wish this was advertised somewhere as we brought my parents and they are handicapped. At first we brought our beach wagon and realized we had to go thru the water (or walk around) so we decided to put the wagon and chairs back in the car and just go with our bags and towels. This was easier for us since the parents can't walk too far and it was very hot out so we thought walking thru water would be easier. It was a decent walk but manageable. Try to go at low tide so when you cross it won't be too high water. Once you cross the brown water and mangroves you will see a beautiful white sand beach! Bring your water shoes because there's a lot of shells. We enjoyed the day at tigertail beach! read more

We had a great experience at this location recently while visiting Marco Island. It's one of your better and less trafficked beaches, at least on the weekdays. Of course, the buildings and the playgrounds center on the first boardwalk, which takes you to the lagoon area and the furthest point from the white sandy beach. I would recommend parking in the second and flat gravel parking lot that is furthest away from these buildings and furthest to the left as you face the beach. This will allow you to utilize the boardwalk that is closest to the White Sandy Beach and you won't have the long walk to circumnavigate the lagoon area. read more

Wasnt worth 8 bucks. But we just wanted to take a quick look not spend the day. We hadnt been to Marco in MANY years but for years we had came every year until we heard about Sanibel. We prefer Sanibel by far. We were in the area and decide to check out our old beloved haunts. Wow everything was very different. Completely built up and crowded such a shame. The first time I came to Tiger Tail we were just dating. IT was a hidden gem. We were the only ones on the beach back then you can just drive right up and Park. it was free, peaceful just gorgeous ...calm water. We didn't have her bathing suits but with the sandbars you could wait out pretty far just in your shorts and the water was so clear you could see a couple fish. This was our first trip to Florida together then it was a yearly vacation. Years later they turned it into some estuary or Nature Preserve and the Beautiful Beach turned into overgrown smelly mosquito haven. Now you have to pay $8 . There are 4 parking lots and boardwalk to the water. To get to the open ocean and beach try for the parking at last lot by a bathroom. Turn right to The closest water was a lagoon that looked like a lake with dirt sand beach that was ugly. Probably good for fishing. To get to the rest beach turn left and be prepared for a long hot walk. We were in our clothes and no water .. the sun really beats down white sand. Would really such to walk all that way carrying beach bag, umbrella and cooler. No reason to come here if you are staying on the island with beach. If you arent staying at a hotel with easy beach access this might be a place worth your trip. Was nice to check it out after so long but that changes were sad. read more

No thank you! That's what I'm saying the next time someone wants to hang out on Tigertail Beach. It's a pain in the ass, and literally everywhere else. Why you may ask? Several reasons, - the walk from the parking lot to the beach is about 20 minutes, and we nearly died of heat exhaustion in mid-July from the lack of any wind and the scorching sun beating down on us during that painful walk. Yes, we parked at the end of the parking lot, but it's still a really long walk to the beach! -the sand is white and fine, but it's still pretty darn hard -seaweed was on the beach and in the water. The water was very cloudy and dark green in color. -no lifeguards, no change rooms, not a single convenient thing near the water - you have to pay for parking, $8 For Marco Island beaches, I rather go to the South beach than this Tigertail beach. I want to love Tigertail Beach, but it really disappointed me. The fee used to be $5 a car, but is now up to $8 a car and they only take credit cards. The man at the main entrance was so nice and funny, and definitely started our trip off right, but it went downhill quickly from there. The parking lot is quite large, and you should park ALL the way at the end by the second set of bathrooms in order to have the shortest walk to the beach. We made the mistake of parking close to the main building, children's play area and snack stand which is the farthest point from the gulf beach. And not only is it a LONG 10 minute walk in the beating sun to the beach, but it is a mucky and swampy walk around the little bay. We were exhausted by the time we got to the Gulf of Mexico and weren't even carrying that much stuff...I can't imagine the people who bring coolers, chairs and umbrellas. You absolutely need a beach cart if you're bringing things to Tigertail. Once at the gulf beach, it was nice. The waves were a little choppy there since it's the first point where the water hits the Marco Island beach, and it's also very shell-y as you walk into the water. I highly recommend water shoes for this Tigertail part of the beach. Further down the crescent by Resident's beach or the hotels, the shells aren't as sharp or as many. But the absolute kicker to the experience was that after our 10 minute walk all the way back to the snack stand, it was closed for no reason. It was a Wednesday afternoon when it should have been open and it JUST reopened under new management about a month ago. We were planning to end our day with lunch and ice cream, but no. Soooo...all in all, I won't be back. Go to Tigertail at your own risk of disappointment. read more

This is such an interesting beach. Nice walkway, great amenities, but you do have to walk across the sand bar to get to the actual beach. The observation deck is really lovely too. We went kayaking down the road and couldn't find a parking space. We really only needed to wash off, but the beach is a nice surprise and the kiddies didn't mind all the ice cream sandwiches from the shoppe. read more

My partner and I were camping nearby and decided to go to the beach and this was the closest to the campground. Parking was just $8 and they only accept cards. It took us about 15 minutes to find parking as it was pretty full. Near the restroom, there is a " map" which shows the lagoon and behind the beach. The parking attendant had informed us to walk left from the last parking lot until we saw the beach so that's what we did. It took about 20 minutes until we saw the beach. There was a lot of people but it is very spacious so we didn't have a hard time finding a spot. Immediately right after finding a spot, we went straight into the water which was very cold and murky. Overall, I would probably return as it wasn't awful and it was refreshing but maybe next time I will go through the lagoon as others Mentioned. read more

This beach is one of the most beautiful I have been to. It is found at the end of a residential road, Hernando Drive. You pay $8 for parking, currently credit card only. The pass is good all day so if you leave during the day, you can come back later. If you want to go to the lagoon part of the beach, park in that first lot nearest the payment booth. There is a concession stand, restrooms and a playground there. I did not care for the lagoon area as it was muddy and there were lots of flies. I've read other reviews where people loved it so it may just be the time of day/year or maybe the weather as it had recently rained that morning. So we got in the car and continued to the left most parking lot. It ends, and there are restrooms there also. There is a wooden bridge that takes you to the beginning of the sand part. Then it is about a 20 minute walk to the water. The sandy area is so vast! The beach sand is soft and fine. Near the waters edge are piles and piles of shells. Some beauties if you take the time to sift through. If you're interested in unbroken conch shells, wade out about 20 feet or so, and there is a bit of a ledge of sand. The conchs seem to get caught up in that area. We got 4 in less than an hour. This was a great spot to hang for an afternoon. read more

5 stars for Shelling....... We didn't know what to expect. I had Googled to find good shelling beaches and this was one and boy did it not disappoint. There are so many shells with different varieties. I even found several sand dollars and starfish. You pay $8 at the gate and the attendant asked us if we have ever been before. We replied no and she explained that if we went to the left it would be a shorter walk to the beach. She mentioned the lagoon and gulf beach but we weren't really paying full attention to her. We went all the way left and there were a lot of cars there and a bathroom and shower. We walked down the walkway path and then took a left. It was a long walk to the beach area and after you make the turn its a long way down to the water. The beach here is super expansive. We were hot and exhausted from the long walk and were happy to "cool" off in the water. I say that because the water is warm near the shore so not that much relief. We continued walking and picking up fabulous shells and the skies to the right of us started to look ominous. We didn't want to go back from the way we came so we asked people how to exit. They said to follow a nearby path to get to the Lagoon. They informed us it was waist deep when they came in. We continued on the path to the Lagoon and sure enough it was waist deep and took us 5 minutes to cross. So it became an adventure and by the time we got to the other side the skies opened up and we were poured upon. That was refreshing! All in all a fun time and we got some awesome shells . read more

Lots of parking and 2 locations for restrooms. It is a walk to the Gulf. If you have little ones, be warned, it is a hike. The beach goes for miles before you get to the water. I heard this place has decent "shelling" so I stopped on my way up to Tampa. Wish I hadn't, honestly. Disappointed. First of all, $10.00 parking. Second of all, to get to the actual beach, its at MINIMUM a .52 mile hike, direct sun, no shade. Not worth it. I went to the lagoon and found a couple of shells and was out of there. I don't know what the beach looks like. I do know it is not ideal if you have a bunch of stuff and looking to setup. It has a HUGE parking lot, but you do have to walk a patch to get to an inlet in w I guess you then have to cross to get to the other side & then walk another path before you are getting to the beach to set up. It's a good 1/2 mile walk If not more. It's perfect if it's you, a chair, and your own beach bag. I've been living in South Florida for almost five years. I can easily remember how eager I was to learn about the state and find cool places to go, but eventually jobs, money, life and all that good stuff gets in the way and you lose time to explore and find cool new places. The other day when I realize I'll be approaching on that fifth year anniversary decided that I need to explore more. I kept looking up, "best places to visit in Florida" and "hidden gems in Florida". Every list led me here so I listened. You drive through a nice neighborhood to get here so I was thrown off slightly by this. I was hoping I was in the right area. I pulled up to the gate and was told parking was eight bucks. Once you park, there is a small parking lot. Beach has a small cafe as well as restrooms before you hit the trail to the beach. Now the area I came through wasn't as prestige and beautiful as what I kept reading about. I hit the sand and it kind of looked like mud. I came through the area where you rent kayaks and chairs so forth, but what I really don't understand is why you'd rent a chair at this area? Maybe they move them to another location for you? I didn't see any elsewhere but this day there weren't many people on the beach so I truly don't know. I had flashbacks of being back in Pennsylvania and being on the river; I saw fish jumping out of the water, people fishing and water that looked very murky. Where was I and why was this place on the list? Telling myself there has to be more to this place I began to follow people to the left of this swampy area I was just at and once the brush cleared it brought me out to what can only be described as heavenly. The flattest beach, the softest most compact sand. Instantly any worry you had was sent away with the waves. If you're a shell collector/lover/thief then you'll absolutely go nuts here. Most of the bottom of the beach is littered with them. You could spend your entire time just looking for shells here. The water was so warm. The waves were calm and the water was clear. There were areas of the beach which had absolutely no one on them. You could access private portions of the beach where you were so alone it was as if you were a castaway. All you needed was a good book, a bottle of (insert your drink) and you're good to go. I could have spent hours upon hours here. I'm kicking myself for not getting here earlier. Oh, you'll see a lot of wildlife here- I made friends with a turtle while I was there- well, it was a one-sided relationship, but it's all good. This is a place you almost don't want to review because you want to keep it to yourself selfishly, but for real, you have to come here at least once. As someone who lives in Fort Lauderdale, it's absolutely worth the two hour drive. I can't wait to spend more time here to catch many many rays and realize. read more

Unfortunately, this was not the beach for us. We visited on a hot day in the middle of July which impacted our experience as it is a 0.7-0.8 mile walk from the closest parking lot to the main beach and there is no shade along the way. The sun just beat on us and our failure to reapply sunscreen when leaving the beach to protect us during the trek resulted in sunburns for all. The beach was more difficult to walk to and no nicer or prettier than South Beach, so for all of our other beach visits we went to the latter. Once at Tiger Tail, park as far south in the parking lot as you can, and enter beach on boardwalk 16 (this is closest entrance). This is the closest entrance to the big/non-lagoon beach. Remember to apply sunscreen prior and bring plenty extra for reapplications. Water is a little choppier than at south beach. There are no vendors to purchase drinks or snacks, and no stands to rent umbrellas or chairs so bring them if you want them (you want them!). There is a lagoon part of Tiger Tail if you park closer to the main entrance and walk straight back. Looks like there are non motorized watercraft rentals there (canoes, kayaks?). Had rained night prior and we would have needed to walk through swampy areas to get to this part of the beach. read more

The beach was nice once you took the mile walk to it from the parking lot. We actually get to a phone that's pretty stagnant with a film on top. Therefore you have to walk around that on a sandy Reiten Road in order to get to the Beach/Ocean. If you park at the extreme end of the parking lot you may only have to walk a half mile. Most spots are 3/4 of a mile until you're at your spot for the day. Other than that it's your typical bitch. If you're bringing any type of things with you you definitely need a wagon. Do not try to find it yourself. You'll never make it read more

$8 per car to get in and parking lot has marked spots. There's also food sold here, restrooms, and a playground. There's an observation tower you can walk up and view a nesting bird. They also offer rentals, like tents and things you can ride in the water. What's neat about this beach: -wildlife, seashells, and the descriptions by the restrooms of the wildlife and shells -only saw one seagull and didn't pester us for food -during low tide you can easily walk across to the island, then on the other side see the beautiful view of the Gulf -park like setting We had a great time but this beach is more of a park and nature preserve rather than somewhere you'd go to lay in the sand. You can lay in the sand, but its packed down and if you cross onto the island, you need to find a spot farther up from the water, sometimes a break in the grass, so your towel doesn't get wet. No lifeguard on duty either. Great spot for families and not busy during the day during the week, but if you're looking for soft sand to roll around in, you may want to go to another beach. read more

Sadly I have to give one star for Tigertail Beach Park,and the reason for the poor rating is the staffs' attitude. So here it goes. We visited the Tigertail Beach Park on October 9th 2020. We had high expectations,because it was advertised as kayak "paddle friendly" We hauled both our kayaks from about 100 miles to spend a day kayaking at the Tigertail lagoon and beach. At the entrance we were "welcomed" by the park lady who was wearing full PP gear-mask,gloves,glasses.....She told us only credit cards are accepted and she is not allowed to touch our credit card do to the ongoing covid.Okey! We payed $8 of park entrance fee. Than I asked her for information to where to lounge the kayaks,she said just take a look at from the watch tower and then we can decided.I also asked her for a map of the park,she told me to pick it up from the welcome center-what was closed.So not very helpful at all..... We took a walk to the watch tower,the lagoon was half dryed up,maybe because of the tide,but it stink pretty bad. The visitor center was closed,no maps or anything. The concessions stand was closed. No on site kayak rental either,it was closed too. In the parking lot we seen a few cars and asked people about where the beach is,supposedly it is like a good mile of walking from the parking lot. From the parking lot there were board walk ramps leading to the lagoon,the ones we find all had stairs at the end.Some even had a sign "handicap accessible" than the wheelchair symbol crossed with a black sticker.....It was very confusing. I thought it was "handicap accessible" with easy access.Well when we get to the end with the kayaks I figured it was not easy, about 10 wooden steps lead down to the lagoon and another hundred so feet to reach the water. So as a warning do not choose this park if you are not able to carry your kayak for at least 200 yards,and down the stairs than through the mud..... By the time we reached the lagoon we both been pretty cranky and tired. We still had hope we will end up somewhere pretty so I started to peddle out off the lagoon. It was pretty regardless of the stink and murky water we seen lots of birds and fish jumping out. However the water was so shallow at some parts that we had to get out and drag the kayaks... Well we end up at a pretty beach with lots of beautiful shells and sand dollars! We spent most of the day there,it was very remote and undisturbed at the most it had 5 other people besides us. On the way back a young couple was crossing the lagoon by foot-that is what most people have been doing-the women worriedly asked me if there anything dangerous in the water.....well it made me think-it is Florida.....the tropics....I seen bonnethead sharks in knee depp water before,snakes and gators in all kind of water...well I just told her I've seen others crossing the lagoon before. If you plan on crossing by foot I suggest you should bring water shoes and make sure you can walk about 1 mile from the parking lot to the actual beach on the other side of the lagoon. Well we get back just before a storm was coming.Did all the hustle to get the kayaks back on our vehicle.... Overall we had a good time but it would've been nice to know about the difficult launching situation and maybe download a map of the park,knowing they don't provide maps. There are 2 ways to get to the beach, you can either walk the long way around the lagoon or swim/wade across the lagoon to the other side. We chose to walk, I will warn you it is not a short walk!! We had a cooler, boogie boards, beach chairs and a cart. I will not bring that much next time!! It is about a 1/2 mile walk from the parking lot to the beach, but totally worth it!! The beach is beautiful, calm waters, tons of space and beautiful shells. We even saw 2 dolphins! A couple of tips, park all the way to the left in the back of the lot and take boardwalk # 6 to get to the beach and if you have small children this might not be the best choice for a beach as I've said it is quite a long walk in the sun and sand. Don't be tempted to stay on the lagoon, you'll be missing out. The gulf is gorgeous, its like you're in the carribean. The shells are amazing. My wife found at least 20 sand dollars too. We made sure we had a water-proof bag and threw all our electronics in the bag. We also take a cooler to float across the lagoon. Make sure you wear WATER SHOES. The bottom of the lagoon is really gross and slimy. We spent 3 days in Marco and then drove to Ft. Lauderdale( where I grew up). If you're looking for white soft sand and lots of shells, Tigertail Beach is a great option! Some things to note are that the bathroom closest to the beach is small and there is no foot wash or shower. It is a very long walk to the actual shoreline, so if you're bringing a lot of beach stuff, a wagon would be helpful. The sunset viewing is perfect! I would leave right after sunset because due to the king walk back, you attract mosquitos on the way. read more

Trip to Tigertail beach was one of the highlights of our vacation. We found lots of seashells and even few sand dollars. It's remote and very quiet except for the sound of the waves and wind. There's plenty of car parking and equipment to rent. read more

I don't really want to tell everyone about this awesome beach for shelling, because everyone will find all the great shells! But... since I am an Elite Yelper, it is my duty. So alas... here it is. When you park and walk up the boardwalk, you may think the cute little lagoon in front of you is the beach. No. The beach is hidden behind the trees behind the lagoon. Some people will wade through the lagoon to the other side, but I don't recommend it. I tried it once and had the bejeesus scared out of me. It is full of muck and slithery things. You can't see in the muddy water. I'd pass. You've been warned. Instead, turn left and walk down the trail toward the high rises. When you reach the beach, it'll look like something from a Mad Max movie. I have yet to see Tina Turner rolling up with her desert car, but I wouldn't be surprised. Turn right and when you hit the shore turn right again. You'll end up walking along a beautiful shore that isn't full of people. We have found some amazing shells here. Better than Clam Pass. Better than Barefoot Beach. The best time to go is around 8 am. Just don't go when I'm there... I want the cool shells as much as you do, and If you are bogarting all the good ones, I may grab your awesome sack of shells and run like I just stole your Halloween candy. Happy shelling! read more
