But I didn't even see Falernum on the menu. There was a group of bar crawlers that appeared to have been at it for a while leaving when we sat down. I understand that can be annoying but the bartender chased them out scolding a woman for putting her trash in a container next to the exit with a trash bag lining it. She apologized nicely explaining that it looked like a trash can, especially since there was other trash already in it. The bartender took the trash bag out (presumably to be thrown away) and tossed the now empty container (I don't know what to call it other than a trashcan...) up next to my partner and me. Sigh. Large group of us went to Tiki on a Saturday to celebrate a birthday. Keep in mind this is a group of professionals in our late 20's, not necessarily your run of the mill 21 year old South Side patrons. Either way, we were looking to have a few pops in what, at one time was one of our favorite spots in the South Side. We were instantly faced with an issue upon entering as the female bartender, refused service of 2 of our group because as she stated "you weren't nice to my sister". So at 9:30, on a Saturday, we are told that 2 people from our group are "Cut Off" and not allowed to drink. Thinking it was a joke (because nobody knew this bartender, or anyone's sister for that matter), we decide to order a round of drinks anyhow. Within 5 minutes our group is surrounded by bouncers ripping bottles of beers out of out hands, telling us that we had to leave. I asked to speak to manager, to which I was told "No". And that was that, we left. Advice to the management - - The bar itself is a great tiki bar, with a DJ that usually spins great music. But like anything, you're only as good as your weakest link. The way the bartender treated my group was rude, disrespectful, and downright discriminatory. I'll go to yelp with a bad review, but the next person might seek additional action. I went in there for the first time because the atmosphere seemed cool. I bought 2 drinks that were $14.50 each and so my total should have been around $30 before tax. They charged me twice for $20 each and i left a cash tip. Not very happy at all and the drinks weren't even worth it. Service was not very good and they weren't even busy. I kinda felt like I was on the set of Legends of the Hidden Temple at this bar. Almec might have been the bouncer. I was only here for an hour so I might not have gotten the full experience and I wasn't drinking. This bar had a lot of "nooks and crannies" and drunk twosome were certainly aware of this. Pro: Funny Female Bartender in the basement (Some wasted guy was hitting on her and she was just making fun of him), Visually stimulating, Random Music, Multiple bars Cons: Smoking, smelled a bit like a water park, security was creepy (that's weird,right?) I hate that I'm giving this place only 1 star, b/c I do like this place at times, but a horrible bartender just ruined it for me. I went there recently with a big group of friends. You would think we'd be a bartender's dream come true, b/c we are a pretty chill crowd and totally get how hard the service industry can be. Well this female bartender was not doing herself any favors by consistently giving us the wrong drinks. My friend had been drinking Corona Light so she ordered another one (I should mention we did have a bartender change - the initial one had his shit together) with this woman. The woman just opens a Corona (regular) and doesn't say anything. So my friend is like, oh I ordered a Corona LIGHT. And then this bartender is like well we don't have Corona LIGHT. At this point my friend was like I was just drinking a Corona LIGHT, after a heavy sigh the waitress went over and brought my friend a Corona Light. What the heck was that all about?!?! Ok weird, but we can get over it. The same thing happened to my friend's husband not 15 minutes later!!! Now, we're just questioning her bar-tending skills and it's not like she was apologetic in either instance. There was just a lot of sighing and eye rolling on her part - apparently she never got the memo that bar-tending is about customer service. And even if you feel that way, it's probably not in your best interest to be huffing and puffing and rolling your eyes around like you're having a seizure in front of the customer. So here's the icing on the cake and which directly effected the star rating for me. I went to close my tab along with 2 of my friends (who also had to close their tabs) and I will admit that I have an intimidating last name, although if you spent time looking at it, you'd realize that it's quite easy if you phonetically pronounce it. But not the point - I tell her my last name and my friends give her their last name. She brings over 2 of the 3 tabs and is like ok I have one for a "Serena, Last name I can't even pronounce!" and then calls the names of my other friends. Ummm...wouldn't it have been sufficient to say "Serena" - it wasn't like there were 5 "Serena's" waiting to close their tab. And perhaps this was just a minor event, but coupled with the other aspects of the night with her - I just couldn't even take it. She was so horrible as a bartender and just ignorant as a person! I just hope if I go there again, she won't be the bartender that night! If she is, you can bet that I'll be leaving pronto. read more

So, so over the top that you can't help but love it. But there are two distinctly different experiences that you can have here. Tiki Lounge during the week: 4 stars. Super chill, friendly bartenders, decent specials. Usually some sort of rock or metal music playing. The best way to describe the crowd is 30-something and 40-something dudes with tattoos and leather jackets. And the occassional stumbling girl on her 21st birthday who is all, "I'M SOOOO EXCITED TO FINALLY GO TO TIKI LOUNGE, GUYS!" and orders the giant punchbowl with 6 umbrella straws and plastic monkeys floating in it and leaves as soon as she finishes it because, "I JUST WANNA DANCE!" (no judgments, we've all been there). So I probably won't meet my future husband at Tiki Lounge, but it's definitely a solid place to have a couple beers (or throwback tropical cocktails in tacky souvenir cups...yes, for real) and catch up with friends. Tiki Lounge on the weekend: 1 star...sad face. On the weekends, Tiki transforms into a douchebag mecca. Top 40 jams are blaring from the speakers but it's packed so tight with bros and hos that you can't even try to dance to them, and good luck getting a drink. To be fair, sometimes I feel that Tiki is a little bit like Gretchen Weiners in Mean Girls...they can't help it that they're so popular. And you know, if you like the typical Southside experience, do it up! Personally, I'll steer clear until Monday rolls back around. This review is long overdue. And when I say "overdue," I mean that I haven't set foot in Pittsburgh in over five years, let alone have a drink at what was once my favorite bar. But after reading the more recent reviews, it seems that nothing has changed. And that makes me smile. I remember driving down Carson Street during my college years, always craning my neck around 20th street to get a glimpse of a dark bar set inside a giant Tiki head. "That's the bar I want to go to on my 21st birthday!" I always announced. And when I finally got inside, I was ecstatic to find that it was everything I thought it would be. Over the top tiki decorations. Do they still have that fake rain on the ceiling by the front booths? I always loved the downstairs bar more than the upstairs bar, but I think it was only open on the weekends. Corona was always my drink of choice. That cute waterfall by the stairs, the overcrowded dance floor with more guys than girls, the "secret" nook where the skeezy guys would drag their drunken dance partners ... and the bathroom! The bamboo faucet was easily my favorite part of the Tiki Lounge. I looked forward to washing my hands. I dragged my friends inside the bathroom to see it. I wanted (and still kinda want) one for my future home. I have a lot of memories from this place. Some good, some bad. But surely that is the charm of the Tiki Lounge. The fuzzy cloud of time and nostalgia has probably added a star to my review. But I'm okay with that if you are. I hope the Tiki Lounge never changes. read more

SETTING: Ooohhh yeahhhh! I was feeling a bit jungle-y this past St. Patty's Day Saturday night, AND I REALLY NEEDED TO DANCE. And when I need to dance, nobody (and I mean nobody!) can stop that itch. Me, Tarzan. You, Tiki Lounge. Time to get down, baby! "Ti-Lo" (as the sign now says, since a few bulbs have burned out) is filled with tropical decor and welcomes a mixed crowd. Ti-Lo had the college kids, the unnecessarily buff dude (who was chasing shots with a protein shake), party girls, and awkward wallflowers (or I guess, in the spirit of St. Patty's, awkward four-leaf clovers?). Regardless, everyone seemed friendly and were having a blast. I spent 90% of my time here at the dance floor towards the back. Medium sized area, but small enough that it got crowded quickly and people were feeding off each others' energy. That's how I like my dance floors--intimate! DJ was actually pretty good, playing a mix ranging from 90's to current hip hop. Soulja boy, backstreet boys, Ludacris, etc came over the speakers. I felt like I was back in my college days. Yeah, I'm a grad student now, but I still got the moves. When the music is on point, so is my dancing. Eventually a circle formed and people were getting inside to strut their stuff. Challenge accepted. Made my way in and got my groove and dougie on, BIG TIME. People were clapping, giving me beads, and somebody even put his hat on me! And for all the other brave souls who got into the circle, they were met with cheers and positive vibes too. What an awesome atmosphere! IMPRESSIONS: Could be because it was the Saturday of St. Patty's, so things were especially happenin. First time here, and I had so much fun! Sure, my shoes got really dirty and the floors got pretty gross, but that happens at most bars/lounges/clubs. Nothing really turned me off about Ti-Lo that was specific to this lounge. I'll admit, I had my misgivings about this place... At first glance, the only word that came to mind was: CHEESY. I walked in to see a casual Hawaiian bar theme going on... became confused when I took a few more steps and realized there was a dancing room in the back... I took the stairs down and re-entered yet another room with a Tiki bar setup. At first, I was thinking, "this is just weird." After a few more drinks, however, I kinda liked that there were different themes going on in different parts of the bar... Not to mention, my gfs and I made some new friends that night. (That always helps!) Honestly, I went in with little to no expectations and so, I was bound to win that night. (Or I'm glad that I did anyway.) But fyi, this is definitely not a "lounge". It's more of a bar than anything else. OHHHH, and did I mention? $5.50 for a jager bomb?! That's insanely cheap. Definitely a nice change from the $15-20 jager bombs in NYC and DC! read more

Dude this place is awesome and it smells so good and the decor looks like you died and went to Hawaiian Heaven. These guys totally committed to the theme and its even in the tiniest of details. Their bathroom is decorated as such. Seashells everywhere and waterfalls and even their booths have a little tiki touch. I enjoyed the Lei the last time I was there. Their drinks can be a bit pricey but they taste awesome. I rarely have a dull time here. For some odd reason I've never tried the food and I never noticed. Would I change anything about this place? We stopped by this last Saturday. My friend came into the city to see me and has never been here. One thing i will say is that I never knew it was so big! I've only been here once, but I honestly did not know how big it is! You know how when you first walk in and there are a few tables opposite of the bar? I thought TIki Lounge ended there! hahahaha. While searching for the bathroom (which wasn't easy!) i noticed the little hideaway spots to sit down at as well as the dance floor in the back... not to mention the downstairs which was another little bar. I knocked down a star because service wasn't really that good. My personal drink order was fine, but my friend and her bf ordered drinks from a different bartender. Can i just say it's really difficult to get a drink? It wasn't even that busy but the bartenders were busy joking with eachother, replying to texts and dancing around to even notice 4 people patiently waiting to be served. We literally waited 5 minutes and the front bar wasn't that busy. Anywaysssssssss... my friend ordered a drink in one of their cool mugs. The male bartender made her boyfriends drink first (weird) I ended up sitting down to save a table after standing there waiting for her drink. Forever and a day later, she sits down and says "I have no idea what this is.. but it's not what I ordered and I also asked for a souvenir mug" While her drink was ok i dont know how they messed up her total drink order. The atmosphere is fun though and since venturing into the entire "club(?)" I think it's totally cool and kind of want to head back. I spent about an hour in here on a Friday night to cap off my evening. Driving down Carson, I realize I've never been in this spot and it looked interesting so the bestie and I park and head in. I love the fact that the guy at the door took a moment to look at my ID and then really look at my face to make sure it was me. Somehow, I felt comforted and just a tad bit safer. Anyway, it's kinda cool how you look up and it kinda feels like it's a rain forest. They even have some kind of water display in the ceiling that makes it look like it's raining. Cool. I was in the mood for something fruity and frozen so we stepped to the bartender and asked if they had anything to fulfill our little tropical fantasy. I heard her say margarita...SOLD! I opted for the strawberry marg while bestie claimed a pins colada. Both were yummy and made perfectly. We grabbed our drinks and headed to the back to get a seat which happens to also be the dance floor. They had some really good music playing and a younger crowd was in the house but they didn't seem to care 2 old ladies were hangin out and a few young gentleman made it over to our table attempting to flirt. Lol Anyway, the place was clean, service was friendly and the drinks were made with a lil love. Will I rush back? No. However, I will keep it on my list of options for a drop in and try to visit that downstairs area because I just need to know....what is down there?!?! This was my Pittsburgh stomping ground. I frequented this place every Saturday my senior year of college. Some things you need to know if visiting Tiki: As its name implies, this place has a tropic theme which is fun. Drink service is quick. They always have tons of bartenders at the ready. There is also a secret little bar on the bottom floor near the bathroom. Only one bartender there, but it's nice if you need a quick round of beers for your friends on the dance floor. Bathrooms are on the bottom floor. You have to trek down a flight of stairs. If wearing heels, this is a dangerous journey. Thankfully, they have railings. Three stalls in the ladies bathroom and they never have toilet paper. Stuff napkins in your bra from the bar and you'll be the most popular lady in the bathroom. Dance floor is a decent size. Always packed. Super sweaty. Sometimes they will grace you with the Godly wind of a fan. Music is very much top 40 with a few oldies thrown in. It's fine for drunk dancing. The demographic is mostly college and it's normally packed with people. You've been warned. read more

If you're just a regular pittsburgh yinzer bar hopper, you might not "get" it and think the decorating was cheesy or take this place for granted. This place was a fun wonky time wrap....We walked into a dance party of 50 year old goth dancing to NEW WAVE.....It was so much fun we jumped in and danced to kinda easy just throw your arms to a side and slowly sway with a disinterested look on your face! It was so much fun. So many cute little kiss booth type locations to smooch in private and just feel giddy sneaky again. This place was exciting and the decor was great. Was a gem in. The staff seemed moody and service was slow, the weren't interested in telling us anything about drinks, menu nothing lol. We got Delirium bottled beer (fitting to the music) We boogied some more then ran out to the next adventure. Staff inattentive and no formal direction is the only reason I didn't give this place more stars. I honestly had no idea what we had walked in to. I felt as if we were in Legends of the Hidden Temple and were about to play the blue barracudas for the win. It was definitely tropical themed and they even passed out leis at the door. There were fish tanks and water falls, tiki cocktail glasses and rainforest decor. Over all this would have been a fun place to hang out if it weren't for a few problems I had. First of all, I ordered a cherry bomb and she gave me the gun fake "red bull". She didn't tell me they didn't have regular red bull before pouring my drink and it is not good. I decided to drink it anyway because I was in a good mood. Second, the hallway with the bathrooms smelled awful. Almost fishy. Which fits with the theme but is not something I want to smell in a bathroom. They were really cool on the inside with shell sinks and rock walls, but my amazement was ruined by smells of a fish tank. Lastly, the dance floor was WAY too small. We could barely move let alone dance. With all that room in that building, they should really expand that area. I would give it another chance for the fun idea of it. read more

I love tiki lounge! I came here on a weekday as I was staying in pittsburgh for a business trip. Came in here after going to the milk shake factory up the block. I just missed the happy hour specials but their drinks are still reasonably priced. They have a great selection of tiki drinks - strong/sweet drinks, along with a reasonable selection of bottled beers. The decor of the place is really awesome as its almost cavelike with all the nooks and crannies of all the places you can sit and enjoy your drink. There's a basement downstairs with another bar so it looks like this place probably has music/club nights where I can imagine it gets pretty packed. The bathroom has a cute bamboo-water sink device thats pretty cool to check out when you are here. Otherwise this is a great place for cheap strong drinks and oh yeah theres 2 pinball machines here too :) read more

It's a long narrow club with the obvious 'tiki' theming. But just get inside, have a few drinks at the basement bar (avoid the first level as it's always too overcrowded), hit the dance floor, pray they don't play too much Lady GaGa. The female bartender in the basement bar knows her stuff; the guy, not so much. It's a bit of a college/hot mess type of crowd but hey, sometimes we all need a little dirrty in our lives. read more

THE WORST WASTE OF TIME, WORST BAR EVER!! CAN I GIVE ZERO STARS? -- This is probably the worst themed lounge in the world. The props and decor cannot save itself from super rude staff and horrible bartenders. My first time here I eagerly asked the bar tender what was the best drink, excited about being at tiki bar. I kind of have a thing for Tiki Lounges (if you do too, and are in SF, you have to check out Tonga Room in the Fairmount Hotel). Anyway, Tiki Lounge really does cater directly to that craving. You can tell from the entrance alone that they have really incorporated all things Tiki into the design and layout of the bar, even on the way to the loo. Unfortunately, the virtues of the Tiki Lounge don't go much farther. There's an awesome happy hour with free pinball. The beer selection and drinks are good, and the staff are nice, but you get the feeling that this place was awesome in the 80's and somehow fell by the wayside. I think with a little renovation it could be an amazing bar. Or if they did indoor mini-golf tournaments on Saturday afternoons. read more

My husband and I were just in Pittsburgh for the weekend and we stumbled upon this place on yelp. Upon reading the reviews and seeing they were basically all either 5 star ratings or 1 star ratings, my husband demanded we go. (He claims this point spread is the recipe for a perfect bar) We walked in and were immediately transported to cheesy tiki heaven. Parts of it seem a little run down but I think perhaps that is part of the charm. Tiki bar is not trying to be something that it's not. I've been to my fair share of tiki bars in other cities and they are usually fancy low key places - this is not that. There were different bars on different levels, small alcoves to sit and take in the sights or to enjoy your own group's company, and a large dance floor full of people getting their groove on. I ordered 2 mai tais expecting them to be completely awful and I was pleasantly surprised that they were not. Drinks came with decorations and garnish, the only tragedy being that I dropped my plastic mermaid amidst exploring all that is Tiki Bar.
