Today I learned a valuable lesson; no matter what you read food is subjective. It therefore behooves one to disseminate information while also trying things for yourself. After months of debating if I should try Tiki Taco, enough reviews on YELP convinced me to drop by as I started getting cravings. I'll keep whomever is reading this in suspense for a bit. I absolutely love the theme here as there's a Tiki hut inside! Come on, that's just cool! Next please note it's located in a safe part of town and the parking is plentiful with Old Trolley right there to get in and out of. The people are nice yet I did notice that the to-go order before me got plastic utensils while I didn't. I'll call that a technicality as I have my own forks and what not but it still needs to be noted. Again, with being a to-go order I can't describe the full experience so I encourage further reading if that's a concern of yours. Now, let's get onto the order shall we? After reviewing the menu several times I decided I would need more than one visit to get all the items I wanted to sample. Please note, I just moved here from Austin Texas the food truck capital and I frequented San Antonio, the street taco capital of America so my standards are a little high. First up, the chips and salsa (which I had to pay for while people dining in, didn't. Not a fan of that policy). The chips were light and crispy but not very flavorful as if there was a shortage of salt. The salsa was in my opinion horrible. It had tons of huge chunks of onion but had zero flavor or heat. As an aside I did get two salsas with my tacos on the red salsa lit me up! Be careful my wary traveler and sample small! The guacamole was even worse. While I do give points for having cilantro and tomatoes in it considering the best version are more like a salad, this was relatively smooth and not much better than fast food guac. I tasted no lime, no salt and it looked like baby food. The biggest insult was it cost $4 for a little tiny container. As for the main courses I had a lot I wanted to sample but as for taco's I settled on the Taco Americano and Pastor. I rather liked the Americano as it had chopped beef instead of ground. The meat wasn't seasoned very well but all the other ingredients were ok and the shell was very crispy. The Pastor was good. The pork was tender and the hit of pineapple added a contrasting sweetness while the onions offered an earthy goodness. I decided not to get the Asada and pork belly on this visit. I was stuck between getting the Birria and Enchiladas Verdes ultimately opting for the Enchiladas. The chicken was cooked ok but again lacked any real flavor but at least it wasn't chewy. The tortillas were ok but the Verde sauce again lacked flavor however I really liked the amount of melty cheese on top. The rice was average but it would have been better if the rice was toasted in lard and the other sides were fresh but a little light on the sour cream. Decent but nothing I'd write home about. Ultimately, I was pretty let down as this was my second Tex Mex I've tried since being in town and my anticipation wasn't rewarded. Cane here tonight with the kids. I have been to the location in River Avenue a few times and always liked it. This location was just as good. Food was outstanding, authentic Mexican food. And the prices are extremely reasonable too! Ambiance is typical strip mall restaurant, nothing horrible about it but you weren't expecting fine dining at this price anyways. Wanted to try this location since we've only been to the North Charleston one. We sat at the bar for lunch and Joel was our bartender. He was very friendly and attentive! I got 3 tacos and a side of rice and hubby got 4 tacos and a pork tamale. My one complaint remains the same between both locations which is, the red and green salsa they give you is all heat and no salt! Salsa verde is my go to and there's no hint of lime or salt so it was just very flat and spicy. Please add salt to your salsas, it would make a huge difference! On a positive note the tacos were very flavorful today and the atomosphere was nice, but a little dark for lunch. Overall I will come back for tacos! read more

Fast service with reasonable prices. I love their Asada Tacos. They are authentically made with corn tortillas, cilantro, & onions. They also have flour tortillas upon request. They are also served with two different sauces, red & green. The red is a bit spicy with good flavor. The green is my favorite with just enough heat & great flavor. Food is excellent but the some of cashiers seating people need to pay attention to tables that need cleaning to seat people right away and not just look at the dirty table and have customers waiting and waiting. Not all of them do it but management should make sure all are on the same page in seating customers. Absolutely love this place. From the decor, to the food, to the service it's wonderful. Great variety of tacos, the pork belly is my favorite, My girlfriend loves the chorizo quesadilla. I was super excited to hear that Tiki Taco opened nearby as I loved my visit to the one on College Park Rd. I used to live in Texas and would frequent small taquerias and really felt the tacos at that location were pretty authentic. It's been about two years though so I'm not sure what they've changed but the tacos I got all had some type of red seasoning on all the meats (or maybe this is just exclusive to this new location??). I wasn't a fan of that change. I also got a long black hair across one of my tacos (zoom in on the pic, taco on the left). They were quick to exchange it for a new one but not a great impression. This place is so good and never disappoints. My bestie has taken me twice now and you know I had to bring my sissy!!! Everything is so fresh and the people are sooo sweet. It is small inside but theybhave outside seating. The have elote too so you already know my fat girl heart was happy and beatting like the war drums in Pocahontas. Haven't been in awhile. Like the changes to the menu, It now includes Birria tacos which I enjoy being from California, it's taken years to reach this coast. Their Augua Fresca is something I always enjoy - pina is my favorite. They also have horchata. Their salsa is very fresh but mild. Next time I'll ask if they have non Gringo salsa. If you're in the mood for some home made actual good food, stop in. Heads up Fridays they make tamales so that's the day to come if that's what you're looking for. All the tamales here are good and they've got 3! Queso, guacamole or salsa with chips are all good. When we first started going here I thought the salsa was complimentary but now it's $1.50. Still a good snack. Margaritas are good and they have mango, strawberry and original. This location has beer and liquor too! They're street tacos... so I usually get anywhere from 3-6 of them. Topped with onions and cilantro. Also, beans and rice are delish sides! Down sides are of the 3 locations, this is the biggest and cutest but the service is a hit or miss. Sometimes if you get a frozen margarita, it's not blended all the way so there are multiple ice cubes. I've gotten salt rim when I asked for a sugar rim. And sometimes we have to ask a COUPLE of times for napkins, limes, or water or something. But sometimes the service is awesome and they are ON TOP OF IT! so still 4 stars, great place to take a large group, and I still recommend this to my friends as the go to taco place. Only our first time here, but was really good! Sure the chips and salsa was $1.50, but both tasted fresh and the refills are complimentary so really it's a wash. Two hot sauces/salsas were brought to the table and both rocked- one was like a green salsa verde tomatillo based situation with great consistency and flavor, the other was a red with a low, gradual heat to it. Our tacos did not need the additions because although on the smaller side, they were packed with freshly cooked meats. The onions, cilantro, radish, and lime that accompanied were the type of thoughtfulness that make this place stand apart from the pack of standard Mexican spots. Often only order flour tortillas but these corn ones were delicious and smartly doubled up to act as the perfect vessel for our chicken, steak, and chorizo. You can truly make any day a Taco Tuesday if you want here because the tacos are only $1.69 to just over $2. But it's all the time. Really hope this place does well- we'll definitely be back for tacos and to try the burritos. read more

Almost full restaurant, waited about five minutes for the hostess to complete a call in order, then we were seated. If you're busy on a Saturday night probably should have someone else seat people. The chips and queso weren't hot either, even the second batch felt like they were pulled right out of the bag, but I can tell they were house made because they weren't salty. The queso seemed fresh but I felt like it had been sitting out so it was starting to cool already. Table salsa was very weak and watery but the squirt bottle was very good and spicy. Tacos were very small and like I said before were on the cool side of warm. The chorizo taco was excellent the asada and carnitas were bland. Guys I work here in Summerville but live in another part of Charleston and let me tell you: this place just made me cry. I was so hungry and just wanted birria and I've had so AMAZING birria here in Charleston. I opened the container of "consommé" and instantly was heart broken. It's water. Literally brown, see through, water. My thing about birria being a trend is that everyone is putting it on their menu and either don't know how to make it or don't wanna put in the time to make it properly. It was no good. The tacos had no flavor and the two salsas they give you were season-less. I'm not even exaggerating. I've made birria myself before and even mine took more than 12 hours because I needed the consommé to be rich and flavorful. Two stars because the employees were sweet. That being said, it makes me sad to have to leave this review but don't get the birria here. El kiosko, el pincho downtown, and el molino are your best bet. read more

This is our second time here...first time we had high expectations. Friends had said it was the best Mexican restaurant around. Well, first time we ordered the nachos with cheese and chorizo...fabulous! So good, I went home and made it again that week. We also ordered the Mexican street corn. We've had it before at Taco Boy and love it there...here, not so much...way too much mayonnaise and the spices were just off. This trip, we ordered the nachos again and again, they were fabulous! We both ordered quesadillas. I ordered the carnitas...it was ok...I guess I was expecting them to have a bit of a spice, a bite maybe...they didn't...and there were pretty big pieces of fat in there...gross and chewy...yuck...will we be back??...maybe for the beer and nachos but not for another meal I don't think...sad... The quesadillas came in a small metal tray/pan...too big really to pick up and eat so we had to ask for a knife...then the tray kept moving all over when we tried to cut them...the 3 star is for the nachos and the cold beer! read more

I had really high hopes for this place. I've heard amazing reviews over the years and I just couldn't wait to experience it for myself. We ordered elotes, chips and queso, carne asada, and camarones al mojo de ajo. The elotes were pretty spot on. The queso had absolutely no flavor to it and had a weird, thick, grainy consistency. The entree plates weren't anything to brag about at all. My expectations weren't met and that was disappointing. The customer service however was spectacular. Kudos to all the servers! Visited your restaurant yesterday. Ordered tacos...some were very dry, some tasted horrible. When we mentioned it to the waitress, all we got was people have different taste. We have come in there numerous times and ate. Yesterday was the worst experience we had. Made us wonder why only 1 table seated when we arrived and 3 when we left. I ended up being sick from the food. I don't know if the taco meats were old or what. But I will never go back or recommend this restaurant. I placed an order over the phone for pickup. It was taco Tuesday and I placed an order that totaled $21.71. I had to be at work by 2:00. I placed the order at 1:17. I was not greeted at the door. When the hostess came to me I said that I was there for a pickup order. I paid for the food at 1:32. I was told on the phone it would be ready at 1:40. They didn't get anything right with my order except they gave me tacos. The first thing I noticed was they were all in the wrong kind of tortilla. So I said I don't want you to remake these just provide me with the correct tortillas. I had to wait another 10 minutes. They were more concerned with getting orders to the people that were eating in. I brought that to the attention of the server behind the bar. Nobody seemed to be worried that I was there before the guests at the tables. When I got to work I noticed that nothing was correct, no sour cream, no sautéed onions or fresh onions that I asked for. I called to speak to a manager and was told that she quit earlier today. I was than told that my information would be given to the owner. That was on December 28th, it's now January 5th. I explained that with the cost of take out, the pandemic going around and how the delivery apps take their profits, that I was trying to support a local business. I am truly disappointed that the owner didn't reach out. I will be spreading the word to my local community and on all social media platforms to show the experience was so negative! I have visited the establishment at least 4 times now, and seeing as how the first time they had not done a hard opening; I wanted to wait to do a review is going to be on all the times I ate and when I ordered delivery during quarantine. Honestly, its my favorite Mexican restaurant around. The ceviche is hands down the very best. Fresh shrimp and crab, tomato and cilantro. 2 of us could eat from one order. The Shrimp salad and Pollo salad are a great change from the normal taco salad from other places. Ive had every single taco they serve and I cant say there is a specific one that is my all time favorite because they are all amazingly delicious. Fresh ingredients and meats (Beef, asada, polloe, etc). I honestly think that is what set this place out from the others, it tastes freshly cooked with fresh ingredients and toppings. Went there a few days ago with some friends, food was awful, ordered a margarita and it was terrible and had to send it back. Charged for chips which everywhere else they are complimentary. No one spoke English therefore made the experience even worse. The bartender spoke a little English so that helped. Our bill was all messed up and had to re due it twice.
