This place looked nice inside, it was spacious and the staff were polite and inviting. I sat down and tried their buffet. They had a good amount of choices, and they had different types of naan you could choose from that you ordered straight from the waiter. I always like to leave nice reviews so I'll say this, my pallet is sensitive to salt. I've visited other Indian buffets and I'd say this one was definitely over priced. The food here is always good. The staff is friendly and eager to please. They've redone the dining room and it's very comfortable. My only quibble is the Bollywood videos going on a very large TV. I'm not a huge fan and it's hard to ignore when it's on. I'm aware of the other Indian food offerings in the area and tikka masala is the best. read more

My wife and I dined at Tikka Masala in Newtown last night (Saturday) and were genuinely impressed. We used to frequent the previous Indian restaurant at this location, and while we had fond memories there, this new and vastly improved iteration completely exceeded expectations. New owners, new attitudes, new flavors! First impression was it was spotlessly clean, warmly decorated, and inviting. The refreshed interior is modern but cozy, with thoughtful lighting and updated décor that immediately makes you feel welcome. We ordered the Bindi Masala, Goat Curry, Butter Naan, and two Mango Lassis. Every dish was excellent: The bindi (okra) was fresh, perfectly cooked, and full of flavor--neither greasy nor over-spiced. The goat curry was rich, aromatic, and deeply satisfying. The meat was incredibly tender and flavorful. Naan was warm, buttery, and beautifully crisped on the edges--perfect for scooping up all that delicious sauce. The mango lassis were cold, creamy, and refreshing--just what we needed to round out the spice and heat. Spice levels were customized exactly to our preferences. Portions were generous, and prices were very reasonable for the quality. Service was outstanding--friendly, attentive, and truly hospitable. Our server checked in often without hovering and made sure every detail of our meal met expectations. Beyond our table, we noticed other guests were clearly enjoying their meals, too. The restaurant had a welcoming, happy energy, and it's obvious that this team cares deeply about the guest experience. The menu is quite diverse--lots of vegetarian and meat options, plus appetizers, soups, Indo-Chinese dishes, tandoori, biryani, and more. You'll definitely find something to love. Start with the good: the two curries we had, Lamb Roganjosh and Bhindi Masala, were both great. Portions are generous and prices are reasonable. Naan was ok, but a bit tough and dry, not flaky. Papadum was fine but not complimentary. A couple of Puri appetizers were interesting and tasty, but not at all elegantly presented. Now the not-so-good: this place purports to be "fine dining" in several places on its website. In my world, a fine dining establishment: - Doesn't have a giant flat-screen TV in the dining room blaring pop music videos - Doesn't give you paper napkins - Has tablecloths, not plastic placemats - Doesn't serve food on plastic plates from plastic serving dishes - Doesn't have waitstaff in logo t-shirts, jeans and sneakers - Doesn't leave you sitting with a tableful of dirty plates for 15 minutes after you've finished eating - Has waitstaff that don't ask "Is that on the menu?" when you order a commonplace dish like roganjosh. - Serves coffee, or at least chai, with dessert I also have to object to being charged a $10 corkage fee when the place doesn't even have a liquor license. I understand corkage and it's perfectly reasonable when a restaurant serves their own wines, but if it's BYOB, a corkage fee is outrageous. When I objected, the guy said "You can google it". WTF. So yeah, this is definitely not fine dining. Kolam was fine dining, under its original owvership before covid when it was carpeted. The carpeting was removed during covid, though, and now the last vestige of intimacy, the room divider, has been removed, resulting in a sterile open space that although "modernized", now feels like a cheesy low-budget nightclub. read more

This restaurant use to be Kolam which quite honestly had gotten tired. New owners here. Looks like a family run business. staff is very friendly and wants to please though some of the younger ones working there are still learning and getting their feet under them. In fact I would say that was the common theme of the night. Food dishes were mixed. Some items were good others not the best. Now some may just be their take on certain dishes but the saag paneer was more a like a spinach soup than what I have experienced at other Indian restaurants. I don't want to trash this restaurant as living in the area we all want to see restaurants be successful. They have quite a large menu which surprised me. My suggestion to the owner... trim it down and keep the focus on high quality food over quantity. You can always expand over time. Key is developing a strong reputation. I would say they need to work out some of the kinks like any new restaurant. Again staff are friendly and want to please give them a little time as they just opened, but do try them. read more
