I can't believe we hadn't visited this restaurant sooner! My husband loves Indian food, and we were recommended this spot, even being told that it was one of the best in the area. It's a bold statement that we have to agree with! Baingan has definitely beat our former go-to spot. The dining room was pretty, and I had no idea they had such a beautiful view of the Housatonic! There's a large patio too. We were one of only two tables in there as we went at an off time for a late lunch on a Friday, but we found the service to be attentive. The chicken Hakka noodles were a highlight, and my husband loved his chicken vindaloo. Our only critique was that we thought the chicken momos could've been a little better. We found them to be a little dry and falling apart. Other than that, everything was a win, and we liked that you could spike your mango lassi. Can't rave enough about this spot enough. I always thought I knew good Indian food but this place has changed my expectations! Another outstanding meal! I ordered the wings and a soup - it's definitely a toss up on whether I like the tandoori chicken or the wings better! My friends and I recently tried this place out. Food was pretty good overall. Friendly staff, nice indoor and outdoor dining options. Right off the bat, the papadam was unusually tasty, as was the onion chutney. I ordered my usuals so I could compare with other places I've been to. The haka noodles were quite good and there was a nice amount of green onions, but it didn't seem better than others I've tried. The channa masala had an unusually thick sauce and a rich flavor, but for some reason it tasted better without rice than with. I enjoyed my meal for sure. My favorite place for Indian is Tandoor in New Haven, but if you're in Shelton you should definitely try Baingan. read more

I came here for lunch with 2 coworkers on a weekday. We each got the lunch special of appetizer and main course for $13-$15 and tasted each others--apps of samosa, onion bhaji, and cucumber salad and then main courses of lamb curry, chicken tikka masala, and chicken saag. It is tough to pick a favorite--the lamb was so tender in the curry, the chicken tikka masala was tangy and the saag was creamy and delicious. I didn't taste the cucumber app but the samosa had great flavor and I'd never had an onion bhaji before to compare it to but will definitely get it again--kinda like an onion latke. This is the second time I've come to baingan, and both times it was as soon as the restaurant opened its doors. All I can say is, Wow. You can smell the spices from the parking lot, and the inside has a homey welcoming feel. There is plenty of parking and the restaurant is located right off the highway. The service from the getgo was very kind and prompt. We were stuck deciding between cheese naan and garlic naan and our waitress told us she could ask the chef to add garlic to our cheese naan. And when the food came, our sizzling tandoori chicken and the smell of spices had a bit of a wow factor. The food was all absolutely delicious and the naan was the best I've ever had. The ras malai was so tasty and a great way to finish off my spicy meal. They have a weekend buffet for only 19.95 per person atm, and we are definitely going to make it a thing because that is a steal of a deal. read more

I had what I thought was a good deal from Uber eats. So, I decided to use it on this restaurant for delivery. I tend to stick with what I know and what I like when it comes to Indian cuisine, but I decided to stray away from shrimp vindaloo and purchase a different entrée. True to form, I ordered the vegetable samosas and garlic naan. Both were delicious! For the entree I decided on Navrattan Korma. Uber eats offered five different spice levels on their site. I went with the medium, which was labeled as hot. It definitely had a kick, as anything higher would've been too hot. This dish is highly flavored, with a slight hint of sweetness. They are currently listed on Groupon for dine-in deal. Based on the pictures I've seen, it looks like it's in a very picturesque setting over the water. This may be my favorite Indian restaurant in all of CT and trust me I've been to a lot! Whenever I want to try out a new place I just always feel disappointed that they can't live up to Baingan. My two staples have been their chicken tikka masala and their achari chicken. Both at medium spice are flavorful but not too spicy. They do not skimp on the chicken or the gravy. The achari chicken is full of achar (mango and lime pickle) and the best I've ever had. The chicken tikka masala is so creamy and rich. Don't forget to get the garlic naan which is perfect to sop up the gravy. Love that they also add some papad and chutneys with every order. Staff here is always so friendly and polite. Would definitely think of eating here since it's right on the water. Have ordered from here plenty of times and have always received fresh and delicious food. read more

When Baingan first opened many years ago, it was a disappointment. We would still try it every now and then, hoping it had improved because it is located very close to us, and sometimes you just crave that Indian taste. This past Diwali, a group of us tried take-out, and it was wonderful. I will admit, we suspected the improvement was due to the holiday. Tonight we thought we'd try it again, to see if last time was a fluke, and we were pleasantly surprised. The food was wonderfully flavorful, and the portions were generous. I had brought home some take out from here a while back and remembered liking it, so we gave it a shot on a Sunday while out running some errands. Great stuff! All you can eat Indian buffet (11am to 3pm) - check. Taj Mahal beer (large size) - check. Nimbu Ka Achaar (Lime Pickle) - check. Bright red onion and assorted chutneys - check. Goat curry and Sag Paneer - check. Comfortable and relaxing atmosphere - check. Savory and creamy spiced-just-right chicken tikka masala - check! Fast and courteous service - check. Gulab jamun and kheer for dessert - check! They have the typical dishes you would expect and a few variations on familiar themes. We got there kind of late, so some of the buffet trays were near empty, but the staff promptly refilled upon request. We really enjoyed ourselves. They were doing a brisk business on a Sunday afternoon, but the waiter went out of his way to make sure we were happy. We even tried a new lager - "1947" upon his recommendation - slightly sweeter than Taj, but still dry enough to perfectly complement the food. One of the best if not the best Indian restaurants in all of Connecticut. While it may be nestled in what seems a random location, unassuming as it is along Rte 110; the place delivers some of the best Indian food I have had between two coasts of the USA, all of Germany, and most upscale locales in around London. Food: Honestly, I haven't tried many Indian places, likely due to not having many options in the area. But I find the food at Baingan really good. I get the Chicken Tikka Masala. They have a few levels of spiciness: Mild, Hot, Extra Hot, and Indian Hot. On my most recent visit, I went with Indian Hot. It was certainly spicy! This was a relief, because I like spicy food and some places don't actually make it spicy when you ask, but Baingan does it right with their spice game. I highly recommend ordering naan bread. Their naan bread is out of this world. Light, airy, with a little char underneath. Great for dipping into the Chicken Tikka Masala sauce. Also, the basmati rice is very good. I order extra because there is so much food, plenty for leftovers the next day. Atmosphere: The restaurant is divided into 3 main sections. Section 1, I will call the front, near the entrance. Not my preferred area to sit because you're a bit secluded from the larger area. Section 2, large indoor area in the back. This is a nicer area with big windows facing the river, so you can get a nice view if you sit close to the window. Section 3, outdoor area patio. Great on a nice day with plenty of shade. Staff: Awesome! Nothing to complain about! They've always been so friendly and welcoming. Service is quick and they're happy to answer your questions. They explain their levels of spiciness and can give recommendations. Cost: Average for going out. For 2 people, 2 entrees, 1 appetizer, 2 orders of naan bread, no alcoholic drinks, it was $51.
