The decor was eclectic mix of antique furniture, which seemed kind of funky and fun, until I sat down. The seat part of my old wood stool wobbled and tilted and I slid right off because some screws were missing. I had to catch myself along the counter and regain balance. I was fine, but this would not have been a safe situation for someone less steady on their feet! I liked the pressed tin ceiling and the chandelier. There were different books on the counter available for public browsing while we drank our coffee, which was nice. It was an autumn day and a cup of hot Earl Grey tea was calling. The location is fantastic, just slightly to the west of Montreal's Hotel-de-Ville (City Hall), and therefore also close to Place Jacques-Cartier. Realistically, it's in Old Montreal in between Place Jacques-Cartier and the city's impressive cathedral of Notre-Dame. They weren't that busy and the person helping me was incredibly polite given that, after all, Montreal is not Paris. The tea was good and, if you want to stay in, they have nice seating areas and clean restrooms. I took the tea to go. This is a small chain and, again, I make it a point to avoid Starbucks when I'm in the Maple Leaf Country. I'm (very) okay with Starbucks but to patronize Starbucks when you're not in the U.S. of A. almost makes me uncomfortable. That said, I typically go to Second Cup or Presse when in Quebec and, now, I know about Cafe' Van Houtte. They also have food such as savory items and pastries. I had a(n) (extra) photo showing me holding up my cup of tea, saluting Montreal's Hotel-de-Ville. That would have shown you how this place scores on the "location-location-location" factor.
