I have been a patient of Dr. Carlson's for about four years, and I am so glad that he is my primary doctor. I am a huge proponenet of "old school" doctors that actually listen to your concerns, share their expertise, and together come up with a plan that will work for you not only in that moment, but also in the long run. His office staff is caring, and gets you to where you need to be. It may take some time, but you will get there. All in all, he's a very kind, compassionate human who wants the best for his patients. I am being excessively generous with the second star here and the only reason I am giving two is because I like Dr Carlson. He's a very nice person and the staff in his office are also pleasant. But from a quality of care perspective, you should find another primary care physician. I made my appointment as a new patient a year ago. As is the case with US healthcare, I had to wait months for my appointment. My initial appointment, even though I had health concerns, was mostly just a meet and greet and filling out paperwork, including records request for prior doctors and specialists. And that was it. Paid a copay, and they billed my insurance company. Second visit was 4 months or so later. This was to give Dr Carlson time to review prior records. When I showed up, again, no exam at all. Dr Carlson spoke briefly about the records he received and wanted to send me out for blood work, even though I had blood work already. Turns out they didn't receive records from everyone, including a specialist who had just done an extensive blood panel a month or so prior. So, Dr Carlson sent me on my way while they attempted to get that paperwork. Had me schedule another appt in 4 months. Copay and insurance billed again, for nothing. Fast forward to this past week and my last appointment. Dr Carlson spent most of the time talking about all of the data he received from the specialist. And while he did ask me if I had any health concerns, he told me my questions were good ones for the specialist and I should ask him. He also suggested getting another opinion on my issues. But that was it. Once again, no exam. However, this time he said he was going to bill this as my annual physical because then I won't have a copay. I don't know why I didn't say anything then and there. I should have. But that's 3 visits. 3 times billing my insurance company and two copays. And one of them billing as an annual physical without giving me any type of exam. What kind of doctor or medical practice is this? How do you have me come in 3 times without giving me any kind of exam? Apparently, they are just here to bill your insurance as much as possible. People come to primary care doctors specifically to help find any issues early, but you can't detect issues in advance of them becoming problems if you don't conduct basic health exams. Moreover, the visits he had me come for could have all been handled in advance of any visit. The office could have contacted me at any time before my first visit to have me fill out records releases. And if any records didn't show up timely, they could have contacted me to follow up with those other doctors. That would have eliminated the need for those first two visits. Instead, they were inefficient - presumably because they just wanted to needlessly and endlessly bill my insurance. Anyway, long story short, Dr Carlson is a nice man and maybe a good doctor, but the way this practice is run is horrible. It's clearly more about billing your insurance and collecting your copay than it is about your health. Don't waste a year of your life like I did. Go somewhere else for your PCP needs. read more

First of all let me say, I really like Dr Tim. His supporting Staff Including other Drs within the staff were not very supportive. Point, asked the Staff for a request for an ENT Doctor. No Response. More recently I got a throat infection, But Dr could Not see me. The staff said to call the other Doctors which I did but again no response. I actually wrote a letter about this & that i was seeking another Doctor. The Staff never responded to the letter. I ended up going to small office across the street Pasadena Health Clinic & they were Excellent. DR Tim I beg you, get competent Staff! read more

I am currently looking for a new family practice physician, not because of Dr Carlson, but I just never want to deal with his abusive office staff again. My radiologist asked me to call my primary to call in an order for a prescription to reduce the severe swelling in both ankles and feet. I called and spoke with someone first thing this morning, Friday. Nothing was done and I did not receive any calls. I have no idea what Dr Carlson is like. I was on time for my first appointment. After one hour in the waiting room, I told the woman at reception that I had reached my wait-time limit and would like my completed paperwork back. She looked surprised, but made no comment. I took my paperwork and left. I can't believe I was treated so rudely! No one came out to apologize and say the doctor was running late. Nothing. I was just ignored. read more

Dr. Carlson is kind and compassionate combined with practical problem solving skills. We met him in an assisted living home we were touring for my husband's mom in the elevator. He was just there visiting with the residents. He is now my mother in law's doctor and we like him so much both my husband and I are changing our primary care over to him. He is responsive to texts, phone calls and voicemail messages. Sometimes I wonder if he ever takes time for himself. Bottom line is we adore him! Went here last year for a yearly checkup. Dr. Carlson was very friendly and answered all questions I had about my health. I wanted to do blood test to make sure all of my levels were good and he took care of everything. Highly recommend this physician. Dr. Carlson is hands down the BEST doctor. He gets you back in the room without any wait times. He takes the time to talk to you as a person and a patient. I am a longtime patient of Dr Carlson and my husband and I just switched to this practice when he moved. We were not notified of his move until after it happened and I phoned his old office, where they rudely told me that he was no longer there and hung up on me. OK, fine. I made an appointment at the new office. Dr. Carlson was polite but a bit rushed, so I spent most of my time with a young MA student who supposedly placed my five prescriptions in her system and set them for refills. Great. Arrived at my pharmacy and none of them were there. All right. Went back the next day and out of 5 medicines the doctor refused to fill one at all (even though it is a medicine I have taken for over a decade), gave the wrong dose on another, posted generic rather than brand on a third and, most critically, gave me an incorrect cardiac medication. I called the pharmacy and they said they would follow up with the MA and the office. Long story short, they tried to send the WRONG medicine over 7 times for a refill (!). I had to physically go down there to straighten things out, which meant time from work and added stress. This also took over a week, which meant that if I had waited I would have had NO medication for some time and this item is needed! In addition to that, Dr. Carlson was to call me back regarding a question I had on one of my meds, as well as some abnormal blood results I had which concerned me. This was in September. It is now February and I am still waiting for those calls, although I now have (almost) all the correct medications six months later! I took my husband to the same practice and he saw another doctor since Carlson was busy. My husband was diagnosed with a new condition which alarmed him, so I asked for information to be mailed to us to help calm him. It is now three weeks later and still nothing. Again, I went to the office and was assured it would be sent. Still waiting. Ditto for the phone message I left where I was assured I would get a callback that day. Nada. I liked both doctors, but the office staff is heavily lacking in response and follow up as well as prescription order efficiency. Perhaps the doctors are too. If one cannot make a simple phone call to go over results, medication problems or concerns, this is an issue. I do not like being told I will get phone calls or mailings and then receiving nothing whatsoever. This is not professional and surely not helpful. Also, if your staff does not know the difference between medications like ativan and albuterol, it can be dangerous! We will give them another try, but if things do not improve then we may have to consider trying another practice who are able to respond to refill requests and phone calls in a timely manner. read more
