As a Philly resident, it was comforting to find the Lisbon version of Reading Terminal Market! Located close to other downtown landmarks, Time Out Market has food vendors lining the outside. I was really looking forward to trying authentic Portuguese cuisine, but there was a variety of options. Some options included Asian Fustion, burgers, sushi, "American Style" donuts (larger than a fist!), traditional Portuguese foods, and even a vendor that only sells the egg tarts and coffee. Most of the vendors had a sample plate displayed for their option, and the names of foods were listed in both English and Portuguese. We were there around 4 p.m., and it wasn't super hard to find a seat (for two) but still quite busy. Note that Time Out Market is cash-free. Large tables line the interior with the stalls on the perimeter and a few beer stalls near the tables (not along the wall like the food vendors). Would go here again. read more

Pay first and pick up counter side for food and drinks. Prices are a bit higher than at local establishments. The variety is beyond anywhere else. It is like a farmers market food court with fresh seafood, fresh baked goods, countless food options, multiple bars, and good eats. We tried Asian Lab, doughnuts, and the Timeout Bar - who made some of the best drinks I've found in Europe so far (with a couple exceptions). This is a very popular place to sample many types of foods. We ate here a couple of times and tried Zero Zero Pizza and Crush Donuts and a Thai place. Everything was pretty good. It gets really packed and the most challenging thing is to find seating. You really need someone to scout out seats like there life depended on it and then have other people order food. Even if you step away for a second, you will have many people acting like scavengers trying to get the empty seat. I would say this is the biggest negative and deterrent. I would suggest if you really want to try it to come early or during off peak times. read more

One of the most popular spots in Lisbon and a bookmark that absolutely had to be experienced, I arrived here at around 1:30pm. There was a short queue at the entrance where COVID passes were checked. My Swiss QR code worked great and I was inside. Masks are still required inside except when eating but I did not see any enforcement of the rule. One loop around interior to check out the options - sushi and seafood, steaks, salads, burgers, soups and even a croqueteria. Wine shop, pastel de nata and all sorts of things to eat, drink and take to go. I opted for pizza. I placed my order for pizza and was given the beer and a pager. I lucked out with a table space and after calming down a moment after the pager frightened the bejeebers out of me, I brought my pizza back to the spot. They're doing a good amount of cleanup and there are workers clearing dirty dishes swiftly and wiping down counter tops. It's loud, busy and boisterous and a one-time thing. Definitely pricier than local spots in the area. With a stop to see what they have to offer at the different stands. I tried a few things: doughnuts, cheese and meat platter, sangria and a few tapas. Really nice for group because everyone can do their own thing and plenty of seating. I was tricked at one strand into buying a more expensive cheese and meat platter. I asked if I could buy things separately to make my own platter and they said it wasn't possible and made me pay for pork I couldn't eat. But when I got the receipt I saw that it was itemized separate. Not nice to have a 12 euro up charge that was optional. Other than that - it really is a what-you-see-is-what-you-get experience. Wow, if there is a central place with a variety of foods near center city, this is the place! It's quite popular and you might need to wait for a spot to open up to dine in. My first time visiting was in the late afternoon and was looking for a snack after walking around the streets all morning. I got pistachio gelato and wow, the flavor and very finely chopped nuts was amazing. Probably a 3.5 for me - Time Out Market is insanely popular and listed as a "must do" so we made it a stop. It's not a traditional market so much (though there are traditional fruit/veg/fish stalls to the right) as a giant food court. Many top chefs and famous restaurants have a location here. If you go, go early! We arrived just after noon and were able to get seats for 4 with little issue. Thirty minutes later it was insanity! Definitely consider finding a place to sit before ordering anything because it is a challenge! Once you have a place, scope out the choices - there's lots of seafood, desserts, traditional Portuguese, Asian and even "American donuts". It's hard to choose for sure. The Mister got a pizza he liked, and I opted for what I thought was a steak sandwich but actually turned out to be a proper steak served with an incredible cream sauce (my bad Portuguese probably did me a favor here). Overall it was fun to check out and it's a great place to meet friends since everyone can have something different, but I wouldn't say I'd make it a "must do" next time. read more

I wanted to give this place more stars based on the food but couldn't because of the cleanliness and atmosphere. The food was really good! We had seafood the two nights before we went to this market and wanted something different so we got burgers from Ground Beef. They were delicious and the service was quick. We also got some cheesecake from a few stalls down (I can't remember the name of the place). It was super light and airy and the crust wasn't too thick which I love. All that said, it could have been cleaner. The workers were doing a good job clearing dishes but I never saw any of them wipe down the tables once they cleared them off. On top of that a VERY large cockroach was right near the restaurant where we got food and our table. You couldn't miss it. I know it's hard to keep bugs out of open markets like that but it was gross and very unappetizing. The market was very loud, which was fine and to be expected, but then on top of that they had very loud music playing so it made it even harder to hear anyone around you. There is a nice park area right outside the market and a lot of people were out there enjoying the area. I'd go back for the food but I wouldn't want to sit inside and eat it. read more

This is a must-stop whenever we visit Lisbon Portugal. It's conveniently situated in Cais do Sodré, across from the metro station where we take the tram to Belem, another must-stop for us, for its beautiful monastery and heavenly pasteis de belem. Like all food hall, it can be a bit chaotic, and when it's busy, difficult to find seats. Moreover, while most menus are bilingual, they often don't have enough detail to help out visitors not familiar with the dishes. However, it's worth a visit because it truly has gathered many of the best local chefs/restaurants under one roof, and when you aren't staying long enough to pay each one a visit, you can sample a few of their best offerings in one seating. There are also some great souvenir shops, for wine, knick knacks, and more. My favorites include Sea Me, for their delicious sushi and seafood, Croqueteria for their unique and very Portuguese offerings: squid Ink black croquette, cod and chorizo, partridge with mushrooms. Grab some iberico ham from Manteigaria Silva, and try some traditional dishes from one of the Michelin starred restaurants. read more

My family is a little picky when it comes to things to eat. This place is perfect for the picky family that can't decide on a place to go. This market has over 20 places to eat from Italian to local dishes of Portugal. The price range also varies with this, but it was rather affordable overall! The actual place looks like a cafeteria, so seats are first call first serve. For groups of over 2 it can be a little difficult to get seats, so make sure you go at a less busy time! The two times we tried to eat here (Both weekdays) it was so packed you can't even begin to try to find something inside and we didn't get a chance to really have a good look at all the offerings. We ate both times outside at two different restaurants that had stalls outside with seating and they were both amazing but we really wanted to snack and try everything inside. While it is amazing that these businesses are doing so well, it was far to many people for us to enjoy and no where anywhere inside to sit no matter how long we tried to find something. Plenty of places to sit and there is beer, wine and cocktails. Bathrooms are tiny for the capacity. However, you gotta eat Pasteis de nata at Manteigaria and get the gelato at the gelato place. It's a pretty standard Time Out market with about 20 stands offering a variety of dishes. It does get very crowded and seating can be scarce so your mileage may vary. Prices are also much higher than outside the market (as an example, a prego here is between 12-15 Euros). They do have the Manteigaria pasteis de nata (minus the long lines) here so I would recommend picking up a sleeve (and a cute branded tote for 2.90 Euros) along with a Dandy sirloin prego from O Prego. read more
