This is an adorable, smaller cinema that plays a lot of older and local films. It really is a hidden gem of the city. It's a bit of an older cinema, so expect that going in but it's really worth supporting such a great place for the community. Very cool place to catch some throwback movies, and enjoy a beer. I come to the Times Cinema often for WMSE Friday Night Freak Show. The Times has newer recliner chairs, and ample aisle space, for a comfortable yet affordable movie experience. Buy your tix online or at the door (I do wish online ticket holders could just be scanned, instead of having to wait in the normal ticket buying line). But The Times has a good local beer selection, and a great concession stand with soft pretzels/mustard/cheese, popcorn and your standard fare. A more modern way of finding people in the theater after ordering food is needed. (Our old school food buzzer from 1982 did not activate so we had to get up and ask for our food, anyway). I've seen Prince's Purple Rain and Graffiti Bridge here, in addition to many other movies, and I'm thankful that the Times is here! read more

When an old school movie theater makes a few key updates, while keeping it's old school charm, that's a win in my book. I went to the Times Cinema to see "Stan & Ollie," a movie telling the story about one of the first great comedy teams. I was surprised that the seats had been updated, since my last visit which, according to the guy at the counter, was over two years ago. The old seats were what you would expect from an old theater, beat up and not comfortable. These new seats are plush and recline! The only negative is that the back rests are too high, so if you're sitting in the first 10 rows, which are more flat vs the prior rows that offer a slight "stadium seating" incline, then you can't lean back or the seat in front of you may block the bottom of the screen, unless you're 7-feet tall. Anyway, the picture was great, the sound was great, and the new seats are great. I need to keep the Times in mind for future movies, especially since it is the closest to my house. This is one of three remaining theaters in the City of Milwaukee... so they must be doing something right if they can outlast all the national chains. It is enjoyable to step back in time, see a classic movie, and spend time with family and friends. read more

What a wonderful and serendipitous impromptu date I had with my wife here! We happened to be driving down Vliet and stumbled across this theater that was playing some classic 90's flicks (Ghost and Pretty Woman). How amazing is it that Ghost is my favorite movie of all time and Pretty Woman is one of my wife's favorites? We happened upon the Times (we live by the Avalon) 15 minutes before what is, fortuitously, my wife's favorite movie of all time (Ghost). Needless to say, we stopped for a nostalgic matinee with deep reclining chairs, a bucket of salty popcorn, and a soda. It was, really, everything I needed today that I didn't realize I did. The popcorn is way too salty!!! They cook it in salt . I did not add any salt and even went back for a different bag but it was till awful.

This is my neighborhood cinema. The movies change frequently enough and most always have something I want to see. Whether a new movie or a classic playing for a special season, I rarely pass by on Vliet without making note of what is showing or coming. The seats are large and comfortable. The ticket prices are modest. For $20, I can get in and have a glass of wine. It's old fashioned in feel, the ticket takers and concessions staff are helpful. I walk there but there is plenty of parking whether in their lot or on the street. The Times makes for a great night out! read more

Not nearly as grand as the mighty Oriental, but offering far more personality than the blah Downer, the Times is kind of right in the middle. A charming building with a cute, old-timey lobby, it features alcoholic beverages and other unusual items for a theatre. And what other theatre in the area has fountain A&W, people! Yet the facility is starting to show its age. The seats aren't nearly as comfortable as some of the other choices in town, and most auditoriums have switched to digital projection, which blows away the screen pops and lines that most Times features suffer from. My biggest gripe: Parking can be a challenge, so get there early. Recently I was there watching the Oscar-nominated animated short films and a staff member yelled out (during the middle of one of the shorts): "If you parked illegally behind the pharmacy you should move your car; a woman called to say she's calling the police." Really? You couldn't wait 7 minutes for the short to end to call that out and break the bond I had with the mini-movie? read more

I've set up two surprise parties for this place, and I love this theater! I first went here as a surprise party for my boyfriend. He loves movies and his favorite is Predator. He never got to see it in theaters so I was looking into having it play at a theater, but when I looked into the Marcus theaters it was 600 dollars at the lowest. That's insane, so I noped out of that real quick. After calling around I found the Times, and it was 300 to rent out the theater to play any movie you want. If you have everyone who comes give you 5 or 10 bucks, it really isn't a bad price at all! They even put a message on the marquee outside. The manager is really nice and helpful and is there basically all the time. You have to supply the DVD or Blu-Ray disc and you need to bring it in early, like a day or two at least. It was all really easy and I was happy with it, so a few months later for my Mom's birthday we rented it out again and this time we watched Galaxy Quest. It's my Mom's favorite movie, and the manager told me it was the weirdest movie anyone has rented out the theater to play... so... yay us? The inside of the theater rocks too. The seats are nice and spaced out, they're comfy, there is so much room to walk past people and three aisles to walk to the back without disturbing people. Their food and beverages are good too. If you order any food that takes a bit to make, they can give you a pager. All in all I recommend going here for a movie or for a birthday party for someone who loves movies! read more

Why have I waited this long to go to the Times?? It's awesome!! Friendly staff, fair prices and a great menu!!! The Times has your regular concessions like popcorn, soda and candy but it also offers pizzas, mozz sticks (!!!!!!!), soft pretzels and....drumroll please....adult beverages! They have 4 beers on tap and a decent spread of liquors for cocktails, including some signature cocktails. Of course since Valentine is a kind neighbor, they also serve Valentine coffee! The screen size is acceptable for the building. Since the renovation, they've made the seats pretty comfy too! My only complaint from a healthcare worker perspective is the bathrooms or at least the women's room was far from ADA standard. If you have mobility challenges I highly recommend going to the bathroom before you arrive and unfortunately, not drinking a lot during the show! :( Ugghhhh. However, I didn't look terribly hard for an accessible restroom. They may have one (I hope). Anyway....I highly recommend going! We had a great evening and it was a special experience in an older theater. Wonderful time! read more

Since last year this theatre has been refurbished. New seats are rocker type, spaced out so it is easy to get in and past other patrons, and angled so there isn't a bad seat in the house. Rather than stuff the maximum number of seats in, they added walkways in addition to the main aisles, so there isn't the need for folks to shimmy into long rows for the last middle seats. Same great popcorn, and wine and beer along with the usual candy, hot dogs and pizza. read more

Hooray, Times Cinema! I am a fan of the Times because they show some unique movies you wouldn't otherwise see in a normal (i.e. Marcus, AMC) cinema. For example, what other movie theater offers $1.00 showings of cult classics such as "A Christmas Story?" None that I know of. I love supporting my local cinema, and if they continue on the same path, I will definitely make the effort to frequent their movie showings more frequently. I gave them 4 stars because the past few times it seems like they haven't had the heat on, or at least not up very high. My suggestion, if you go later in the evening - bring a blanket. It's understandable if they don't turn the heat up - after all, they have to make a profit as well. Other than that - support your local movie house! read more

I'd really love if Yelp allowed "1/2" stars, so consider this an unofficial 3.5'er! Lets get the nasty out of the way first: What don't I like? The parking. It was street only as far as I could tell, and all the streets there are one-way only, so it got filled up faster, which meant you were parking further and further down and had to walk further to get to the Times. So while I don't like it, I get it, little theater, can't really afford big parking, check. The seating. I'm so-so here, but I default to not liking. I sort of felt like I was sinking into my seat, and while I know others may enjoy that feeling, I constantly kept adjusting myself -- no, not THAT kind of adjusting, nasty. What I liked! The Times is one of those places that you can count on to host great community-based events, like Ex Fabula, and the more independent films - not always, but sometimes. I liked their varied seating, even though I didn't really like MY seat (they have a mixture of theater chairs and tables and such which are up closer to the stage... or was that an Ex Fabula thing only?) I'm really looking forward to keeping the Times on my radar for productions like Rocky Horror and other fun things that these smaller theaters tend to do. Oh yea, they serve adult beverages as well, and while I'm not sure on any restrictions they may have, such as no beer before 9 AM, there were plenty of people coming out with cocktails and beer when I was there at 7:30/9:30 PM. Your luck my vary. So, you know what, I was going to rate it a 3 and say it was a 3.5, but I'll rate it a 4 and say it's a 3.5. I think the Times deserves that much. read more

I love the Times. It is my neighborhood theater and just a small walk down the street. I've seen Wolverine here, as well as midnight showings of films like Sharknado and Halloween. There are always good, cheap films running here on the weekends. The picture quality is slightly grainy though, compared to seeing a film at the Oriental or Downer. read more

I like the TImes better than the Rosebud. Why, you ask? Well, simple. I love the midnight cult movies. Have you ever seen Ed Gein: The Musical? Well I have, at Times Cinema. I even got to meet some cast members. Times also hosts live music, comedy, Brew City Bomshells, etc. They show not only new movies, but indies and classics. Most movies are $5 and some are even free. You can buy a beer or wine and some great snacks on your way in. Sure they don't have couches or love seats like the Rosebud, but the Times holds its own charms. read more

The seats are comfy, aisles are wide, the beer is flowing at a decent price, and they offer more to eat than your standard popcorn and candy (though I was craving something sour and was disappointed to find no options).
