Dr. Tandrow has been my dad's optometrist for 20+ years and I started seeing him 2 years ago. He's awesome - great guy, great eye doctor. Everyone at the office was professional, kind, informative and the doctor got me a $60. rebate on a year's worth of contact lenses. He answered questions that I had and I was in and out of there efficiently. I had the wrong prescription and even learned that I have better vision than I thought. I went in for an annual eye exam. Dr Tandrow was very friendly and efficient. I didn't have to wait long, and the exam only took less than 30 mins. He didn't tell me much about my eyes since he said they are healthy....so I guess it was a pleasant experience overall? read more

dr. tandrow has been my optometrist since i moved to the bay area (2.5 yrs ago). luckily he is on my vsp insurance plan, and he is about a three minute stroll from work. it is not hard to get an appt. the doctor is always friendly and thorough. he also doesn't dilate your eyes unless he feels it is necessary (which i always appreciate). the selection of eyeglasses is good too. i am somewhat picky about my frames and i have never had any problems finding a frame that i like. the staff is helpful and offers their opinion, but their taste seems more conservative than mine, so i take it with a grain of salt. if you work in the financial district, i recommend dr tandrow. read more

Dr. Tandrow is wonderful. I called the office to ask a question about an problem I was having with my eye and the staff said he would call me back. I was thinking I would probably never get a call back, but five minutes later my phone rang and it was Dr. Tandrow. He was so nice and listened to everything I said and filled me in on what was going on with my eye and let me know I had nothing to worry about. I've gone here twice now and couldn't be more pleased with him or his staff. They have a nice selection of frames and can also get you any contacts you need. HIghly recommend Dr. Tandrow! read more

If you are looking for an optometrist who isn't beholden to the giant chain eyewear providers, who offers excellent service and is conveniently located downtown, then Timothy Tandrow should fit the bill. The man is friendly, professional, and frank; he manages to be comforting without being condescending. His staff are also excellent. After my glasses began to "malfunction" (the left lens kept falling out) I came in to investigate contacts; they repaired the glasses free of charge and set me up with a pair of trial contacts. Good people all around. His office is a bit cozy, but in San Francisco, who can blame him? I'll admit, somehow I find the old building and it's steep stairs comforting. read more

Dr. Tandrow is great! I have a very high prescription and wear gas permeable lenses. The doctor I used to go to for years had retired. I have been to many eye doctors and they were unable to fit me with confortable lenses. He is very patient and very knowledgeable. He is the one to go to if you have hard to fit lenses. Dr. Tandrow is like a wizard optometrist. He explained things to me that had never before been previously explained by my prior optometrists, made me aware of things that I had previously been completely unaware during my visits to prior optometrists, was very funny, and extremely efficient. He's a real pro, knows what he's doing, and, hence, did an excellent job guiding me through my exam and choices thereafter. I first came to Dr. Tandrow's office a few years ago when I was on vacation in San Francisco. The front staff took a look at the prescription glasses I was wearing (from an optometrist in Chicago) and asked me what I liked and disliked about them. I told them that I loved the frame style--thick, black rims--but had a hard time with the red marks they left on the bridge of my nose. I also mentioned that my glasses made my eyes feel strained in the corners of the 'whites.' I said how I noticed my eyes getting bloodshot in these corners. They were EXTREMELY helpful. First, they adjusted my frames (from another office!) so that there was less downward stress. They were cleaned perfectly and given back--it was like I had a new pair of glasses. During my checkup with Dr. Tandrow--who has a friendly, attentive manner and is by far the most thorough optometrist I've ever visited--he explained that it was possible that my lens shape was causing strain in my sclera (the 'whites'). This was possibly a reason for the bloodshot vessels as well. The other thing I was told was really interesting: he asked if I spent much time in front of a computer screen. I do (for work) and he explained that often times this can lead people to blinking less than normal. Thus, dryness and irritation! Being notified of this was enough to help me start blinking more regularly during work. It has since become habit, and now it's no longer a problem. After my exam, the staff helped me pick a good set of frames. Not only do they have the latest fashions of frames from tons of designers, but the staff made sure I had a frame with a shape and size that fit my face well. This is more difficult for somebody like me than you might imagine (long, skinny face, large features, etc.). Anyway, they also took great care to make sure the lenses were lightweight and wouldn't cause red marks on the bridge of my nose. This alone made it worth the effort for me. Last, they shipped to my home in Chicago very quickly. It was an excellent experience from beginning to end. This was years ago. And I've continued to visit Dr. Tandrow about once every year, whenever I visited San Francisco. Recently I moved here, and it's great to have them nearby. The staff is very friendly and conversational, and sometimes I'll drop by when I'm in the area just to say 'hi.' They always ask how I'm doing and check on my frames to make sure there aren't any adjustments to be made. Quite simply, the level of customer service from Dr. Tandrow and everybody else in the office is the type you just don't encounter much anymore. I highly recommend them to everybody who compliments my glasses. Which happens pretty often these days... read more

Rude awakening! This morning, I had a 9:00 appointment and was there early. Twenty minutes early in fact. Instead of letting me in, or at least suggesting I grab a coffee at one of the nearby shops, the receptionist simply walked right in front me inside the store, looked back at me, didn't say a word, locked the door in my face and turned his back on me. Now that's what I call world class rudeness. But hey, I was early, right? How dare I be "so early" for an appointment? Wow! This echoes another incident I experienced last year with this optometrist when after my annual exam I ordered the usual series of contact lenses. When I received the package at home there was only one box of lenses instead of the normal two. I called the store to inquire and a staffer explained that my policy only allowed for 1/2 the amount. What?!? The same policy I had for more than 10+ years suddenly was cut down to half. Made no sense. So I then checked with the insurance myself, which confirmed that my coverage had not changed and that I was still entitled to two boxes of contacts as contractually obligated, and then called back Tandrow's office to clarify. Initially, the staff there kept arguing the were right instead of simply admitting they made a mistake. The error itself was no big deal but the denial and cover-up was annoying. And time consuming. It took a few back & forth with the office manager but eventually we sorted it out. They had made a mistake, which happens of course. But the "Go away! We are absolutely sure your policy only covers this much" initial stance ws eventually walked back. With an apology. It did leave me wondering though about the general client service philosophy of the place. As of this morning, however, I'm no longer wondering. When I returned to the office at 9:10 after being so rudely turned back at 8:40, admittedly a few minutes late myself by then, I was confronted by a Doc Tandrow who clearly was in no mood to hear that his staff had been rude. Upon hearing from me what had happened (in a manner I would characterize as fairly relaxed but still determined to highlight the lack customer etiquette), Doc Tandrow did nothing to acknowledge the plain facts and, instead, summarily dismissed me as a client. Well, a good day to you as well Sir! Is this a case of Dr. Jykell and Mr. Hyde? I don't know but it sure felt bizarre, awkward even. Business must be good if you can just dismiss long time clients simply because they state an office flaw in service... In summary, I don't recommend this place. The staff and Doc are good most of time but the odd incidents of incompetence, cover-up and rudeness don't warrant the aggravation. Life is too short! read more

Before I would just to go whatever eye place which had good selection for frames never really being loyal to one over the other, but he's definitely a keeper! I have been a patient of Dr. Tandrow's for years. After moving to San Francisco over 20 years ago, I was looking for a new eye doc in the FiDi. I found Dr. Tandrow and have been seeing him ever since. Dr. Tandrow is so professional and caring. Even now I no longer work in the neighborhood, I make the trip to Montgomery St. His staff are great! Very nice and knowledgable. I never have to deal with any insurance issues and my glasses are ready in less that a week. Mike, in particular was so awesome during my last visit when I brought in a pair of broken glasses. He performed his magic and not only did I leave with my new frames, but had my old frames repaired at no charge! Great customer service! I wouldn't think of going anywhere else. read more

While the Dr was great, talked through everything he was doing and made me feel very comfortable, I was really disappointed with the post exam process. I wanted a new pair of glasses, just like the ones I already had. First, they were delayed because the lab screwed up one of the lenses so they had to be sent back. When they finally arrived, I went to collect them. I have bought glasses before and usually they take 20-30 minutes to adjust the frames so that they fit comfortably, but not here. I was out within 5 minutes. I had to ask them to adjust the length of the arms and they just guessed, they didn't look at where they needed to be adjusted. They obviously couldn't be bothered so I left. When I later looked closely at the new glasses, I found that firstly the lenses are not the same high index lenses I had on the original glasses that I asked them to copy, the lenses are not correclty ground so the frame is not seated properly on the lens and the frame has marks on it where they've used a pair of pliers to force the lens onto the frame! These are $400 frames, so I am not too happy with that! read more

Dr. Tandrow is very nice and make the eye examination process as easy as it gets even with procedures that can be uncomfortable like dilating your eyes. The staff has always been very helpful, and I have worked with several of them. They will adjust your glasses for free. They let me take a pair of frames home to try them out for a couple of days and get family and friends' feedback (had to leave credit card number in case they got lost, but otherwise no charge). Love this little office. It is small and has a pretty solid selection of glasses! it wasn't overwhelming, like some eye doctor offices are. The staff was very friendly, I was in and out in no time. I have been going to Dr. Tandrow Optometry for my contacts and glasses for the last couple years and have always had great experiences there. Dr. Tandrow is friendly and knowledgeable and makes the eye exam a very pleasant experience. The opticians are very skilled and friendly, they explain everything succinctly and have always made the right choices for me, and they have a wide range of stylish frames. This year for my exam I saw their new eye doctor, Dr. Stout. She was very professional and friendly, and she did a great job explaining everything to me. She really took into consideration my needs and situation (i.e. on the computer a lot) when deciding the best prescription choice, and I really appreciated that personal touch.
