Dr Frank and his team provide exceptional service for eye exams, glasses, and always makes time on his schedule when we need help for an urgent eye issue. The office is well equipped with diagnostic equipment for routine exams and more in-depth exams. We never feel rushed, his explanations are thorough and he answers any questions we might have. I have terrible dry eyes and Dr. Frank saved me! Not only did he fit me in last minute as a new patient with a full roster, but he took his time explaining my issue, answering all of my questions, putting my mind at ease, and making sure I'm taken care of properly. This is a long overdue review, as I haven't had dry eye issues since I've become Dr. Frank's patient over a year ago. Today, I came in for Opalite IPL treatment as another line of dry eye management and stye issues. I was very nervous and Dr. Frank put my nerves at ease by talking to me about his travel adventures. The quality of work was abysmal; hard push on contacts that were substandard, expensive eyewear came with a massive blur in my left eye. I've heard of similar experiences from others. His business practices are even somehow worse- a shady scam-like individual called to say a balance was due but was unable to provide an invoice with date or description of service. I have been trying to find a provider since moving to San Anselmo in March 2020. Dr. Frank is hands down the best provider I have ever come across. Working in health care myself, I look for someone who is professional, knowledgeable, friendly, and takes the time to explain all aspects of the encounter visit and ensure there is an understanding by the patient. The experience begins with the first phone call to the office and the staff who answer the phone and take care of the patients in the office was very positive: friendly, helpful, efficient, and professional. I did not need to see the options who are in the office, so cannot address any interactions with them but if you are looking for a fantastic optometrist with a friendly, efficient, and helpful staff, you cannot go wrong with Mt. Dr. Frank is a great optometrist. He explained vision correction in a very clear way. I recommend him. I cannot say the same for their opticians. They tried to sell me some frames at 5 times the actual cost, claiming that my insurance would reduce them. The "insurance" price they quoted was about $20 over retail, and the original price was a pure fabrication. This is how they scam both the insurance company and the patients. Ridiculously run office! Not sure who is running the show there. Office manager is never there when you call and don't return calls. After providing insurance information to them and requesting that they bill Meritage Network which is the information I was provided by Blue Shield, I still keep receiving invoices and they refuse to send the invoices to the billing address I provided them. The rude receptionist Rosa asked me if the office manager didn't call me back, when I said no and that I would have to speak to the Optometrist she got attitude and hung up on me. read more

Terrible experience, overall. I was on time for my 11 am appointment then waited for over 30 minutes in the waiting area. During that time, I noticed all of the staff that I saw were in sweatpants - this did not instill confidence in the professionalism of this office. I had a work call at 12:30 so I was very cognizant of timing. I was finally taken back for the initial testing and discussion with the assistant. She was very friendly but quite inappropriate in some of her stories and advice, all of which were not eye-related. I mentioned to her that I had a 12:30 call and she said that shouldn't be an issue and then seated me in the back area. I waited there for about 30 minutes without any acknowledgment. The whole while, I am hearing SCREAMING and cursing from the front desk as the women there were apparently trying to catch a spider. It was grating and startling. I finally went to the front desk and reminded them I was still waiting and one woman immediately got up and got me in one of the exam rooms, so I guess it had just been waiting. The doctor finally came in about 12:15 and at this point, I'd had to cancel my 12:30 call. He assured me I would be out before my 1 pm call. The Dr. was very nice and thorough, but I was so irritable from the lack of respect for my time to this point that there was no redeeming the experience. I was not out the door until 12:50 and I barely made it home for my call. Nearly two hours for an eye appointment, without any complications. That is unacceptable, as was the overall professionalism and tone of this office. read more

For eight weeks I went to Dr. Frank for an eye problem with no solution to my problem, at least the last three visits I wasn't in his office for more than 15 minutes, and after each visit he would tell me to make another appointment. After my last visit I walked out without making another appointment because I felt he was giving me the run around, and I regret not talking to him about it before I left. Many months later I received a phone call from his office telling me I had an outstanding balance, but I never received a statement even though they have my correct address. I drove to Mt. Tam from SF for my annual eye exam. Being conned into the retinal scan instead of eye dilation costs $50.00. Then you add in the $80.00 for contact fitting. What I thought was a sample from Dr. Lassa for eye drops turned out to be $12.00. Person that gave me the retinal scan kept pushing my head with her dirty fingers. She was snappy when I refused to have my picture taken for their file. Drove back to SF to pick up my contact lenses and they had ordered the wrong lenses. They even had the audacity to call me to say I should keep the brand they ordered because the ones I used were going to be discontinued. There went the contact fitting. I left a message this morning about the whereabouts of my contacts. (They were supposed to be shipped UPS). They wouldn't take the time to pick up the phone to call me back. Instead, they sent a text. A very unhappy patient. This was worse than going to Lens Crafters. read more

Dr. Frank is by far the greatest doctor I've ever seen and to him on my eyes calling him the empathetic genius would be doing a disservice to both of those fine qualities that he has in spades. I have a rare eye condition called Keratoconus. When I was first diagnosed with this weird condition I went to see the leading specialist in the West Coast UC Berkeley. They did not give me the same advanced level of care and treatment the Dr. Frank. When I saw the doctor this was my fourth pair of hard contact lenses the last being made by Dr. Frank himself. I went into the office today and I walked out with my new contacts and I have for the first time in my entire life at 47 years old 20/20 vision. Dr Frank literally wrote the book on the subject. His machines are the most advanced they've ever seen far greater than you see his knowledge my Pinyan the best in the world. He's so wonderful he also has taken on both of my aging parents who I live with you take care of and gave them just as good service as I received. My parents and I holocrine cannot enough nice things about us the doctor and his practice and every employee who works there. read more

Is it possible to give a minus 100 rating?? They are the most unethical outfit I have ever encountered! After an eye exam with my Eye surgeon, I was told to get a refraction to measure my eyes, as they did not provide that service at their office. Dr. Lasso's office was a convenient location. I made an appointment to have the refraction done. Not having had this done before, I was unaware of the extent of the examination. A good hour later, I was told my charges were close to $500.00. I was shocked and informed them that amount was way too much for a simple refraction. They informed me that Dr. frank likes to get a complete picture of the health of the eyes and that way can provide better service. I was also told not to worry and that Medicare would take care of the bill. I paid my co-pay and left the office, not happy still. Weeks later, after numerous calls/emails from Dr. Frank and his staff I was told Medicare would not pay for the exam. This all took place in July of 2023. They are still after me a year later and have sent my outstanding bill to collections! What Dr. Frank does not understand, apparently, is why would I NEED a second opinion from an optician about the general state of my eyes, when I had just had a Eye Surgeon do the exact same examination? Who would you trust more? Why? Because he was trying to con Medicare into paying, and when they didn't they continued to harass me. Judging by all the bad reviews on him on Yelp, I am not the only one who thinks so poorly of this office. I have turned this matter to my Attorney and reporting Dr. Frank to Medicare for fraud investigation. read more

I recently received the most accurate prescription for progressive lenses I have ever had in my 50(ish) years of wearing glasses. This is why I'm very surprised reading some of the negative reviews below, it just doesn't fit with my recent experience. This center has the very latest diagnostic equipment. I was happy to pay a small fee for these additional tests, as this additional (non-standard) information was incorporated into my prescription. The staff was clear that this was an "add on". It meant that Dr. Frank could spend more time on the medical-related parts of the exam, and only tweak the final prescription with eye charts. Dr Frank was outstanding and professional. I would describe him as refreshingly direct - an "east coast" type person. I believe him when he says almost "everyone in California has or will develop cataracts" (its the sun). No sugar coating here. That's what I want from a medical professional. Greg spent 2-3 hours patiently answering my questions as we worked through the dizzying array of options when getting progressive lenses for office/computer use, general use, and outside/sunglasses. This is extremely detailed work, as each lens has different focusing ranges, sweet spots, coatings, etc... Each focusing range and sweet spot was different for each use-case. Greg help me reason through each step of this decision making process. I opted for the highest index glass Zeiss makes. This meant that my glasses had to be sent Zeiss Labs in Germany, and that I would have to wait. I'm glad I did, as I was stunned by how thin the resulting lenses were (judging by lens thickness alone, I was apparently 14 again). However, above all, I was impressed by level of perfection expressed in the mathematical model used by Zeiss labs (which incorporates the 14 additional data points collected by Mt Tam's vision tests). Progressive lens technology really is advancing. This is my second progressive prescription, and the advance was obvious. For anyone with an analytical/engineering background, you will particularly enjoy working with this team. With some time and effort, reasonable fees, I walked away with the best prescription of my life. read more

My only problem with my first (and last) visit yesterday was the price gouging on lenses ($450 for a pair). I will go back to Kaiser Permanente Optical in San Rafael where the exact same lenses run around $200. Question for the owner: How much do you pay for these lenses? My guess is around $80. During the crisis people are struggling financially so would it kill you to make a decent profit but not something obscene? read more

Update: I just received a bill in the mail from Mt. Tam Optometric Center for my eye exam earlier this month. At the time of this appointment, they told me that I owed a $35 copay, which I paid. They are now claiming that I owe them $291. It was a routine eye exam. Based on the itemized bill, they added a whole bunch of specialized imaging to my exam without alerting me or asking me, which is where the bulk of this charge is coming from. I am disgusted that they are trying to charge me this after assuring me that all I needed to pay was a $35 copay at the time of the appointment. I am also disgusted that, insurance or not, they would charge $300 for a routine eye exam. I am living on a grad student stipend, and don't have this kind of money to be throwing away. My wife had come here a while back and had a great experience, but she only needs mild reading glasses, so I was a little unsure with my almost legally blind myopic prescription and not being too happy with my last two pair at other places. Well I was very pleasantly surprised that all of the staff were fun, professional, and laid back. It almost felt like a spa vibe. I loved working with Tim, Drs. Frank and Wanon and had a great time with Craig, picking out my new frames. My glasses aren't in yet but these sample contacts are awesome! So great to see again! read more

I had one of the worst eye doctor experiences of my life. The staff was bordering on rude, Dr. Frank was rushed and gave me unnecessary tests just to bill insurance for his benefit, they misled me about the cost of a retinal exam and made me believe it would be covered by insurance which they told me it was not when it came time to pay the bill, and on top of that: my prescription was totally wrong and I had to get another exam from another doctor and new glasses. They then refused to correct their mistakes. I sincerely hope you find another eye doctor! read more

In December of 2019 I began having major floaters and seeing bright flashing lights. This worsened over the day. I could not get a ride to the emergency room, so I walked to Mt Tam optometrist. They used their fancy retinal scanner and told me everything was normal. 5 days later, after continuing to lose vision in my eye. I went to an ophthalmologist who sent me immediately to a retinal surgeon. I had multiple retinal tears and a complete detachment at that point. Over a year later, I have some vision in that eye, but not much. If Dr. Lassa and the fancy machine had seen the obvious retinal tear, I would have been in the surgeons office the next day and my outcome would have been different. read more

Most recently her service was just even better than normal. I really would like to rate this place higher but with the lack of service I received, I just can't. When I visited them for my annual checkup, they recommended a retinal scan and assured me that it would be 100% covered by my insurance. When I found later that it wasn't and that I was out money from my own pocket, I called and was told that there was no way they could have made that claim. No apology, nothing. To make the experience worse, after my exam ended at 5:55 pm (after waiting a while for others before me), the man tending to the frame shop told me that he had another job to go to at 6 so I might need to come back another day. After my protest, he reluctantly sold me a new set of glasses and I left. I called them a few weeks later to complain but was told there was nothing they could do. Again, no apology of any sort. I even wrote them a letter and sent it through the mail to hopefully get my feedback to the owner, but again, no response and no apology. There are plenty of eye doctors in the area. Take your business to one that may actually appreciate you as a patient and paying customer. read more

Wow! What a business practice this company has! Maximize revenue is blatantly part of everything they do starting with the optional $85 photos (digital) over and above my fully covered insurance exam that were taken without any mention until the bill came to $95 instead of the expected $10 co-pay. Then comes the other side of the business - frames/lenses. They started with an over $800 quote for my first .75 prescription glasses to move up from my "cheaters". This was based on their average frame cost. Oh, sale priced frames can't be bought using your insurance because that is considered "double dipping" - huh? If you have insurance you must pay FULL price for on sale frames. What logic is that? This place is nuts...all about the money. Focus or San Anselmo Optometry are much better options nearby. read more

I write Yelp reviews only when I feel compelled to let others know about a business that is truly stellar. Mt Tam Vision Center is one of those rare places. The office is clean and friendly, easy to find, with nice views outside and less of a "clinical" feeling which can be uncomfortable. The equipment and testing procedures, however, seem very high tech and leading edge. Calls are returned promptly and you get text reminders of appointments, which is helpful. When you arrive, you are greeted by name when you walk in the door. The staff always asks about my husband when he's not with me, who is another patient there. They are unfailingly friendly, efficient, and positive. The technical assistants (don't know what that is called) are also friendly and knowledgable. There are a lot of tests, but they make the process kind of fun. Last time, I had a test on a new kind of machine that takes the place of the dilation process which is uncomfortable and hinders your vision for several hours. This was great! Dr. Frank is a caring, smart, extremely knowledgeable doctor without a big ego. He will work with you as a team and listens to you and your questions. He is patient. He also seems to stay current with new technologies in contacts, glasses, and procedures that can help you see better in general or help correct specific vision problems you have. At the same time, he's sensitive to your budget and gives you the best result he can with what you can afford at that time. I have been seeing Dr Frank for many, many years, and have always been impressed with his knowledge and how he keeps up to date with the latest in technology and options for all us short-sighted and then middle-aged folks... He always gives me ALL the options, lets me try things out, etc. etc. I moved to Berkeley from Marin more than a year ago. I tried an optometrist in Berkeley (will review them separately - it was a disaster. It is actually what made me realize just HOW good Dr Frank's practice is. Now I drive to Marin when I need my eye exam. I also appreciate the front-desk staff - Ozi is so helpful. Seeing is believing and I can see clearly now! My eyesight was getting so bad I could not read up close and I was getting headaches as a result. This is the best eye care center I've ever been with. From the front office help, all through the office to Dr. Lassa Frank and getting my glasses selected and fit, I felt like I was being compassionately cared for. Dr. Frank uses the latest technology and also recommends old-fashioned remedies when they are indicated. I recently got sand in my eye at the beach and was unable to flush it out myself. I was about 45 minutes from his office on a Saturday afternoon and he stayed late to wait for me to get the teeny spec out and help me care for it. His staff always knows us by name - and the office is dog-friendly so we get to bring our pooches. Ozy, Anna, and Craig are professional and personable. The office is beautiful. The doctor is great. Nope. I wouldn't go back. First off, their intake process is with a tablet device that asks for a bunch of information which I consider to be none-of-an-optometrist's-business. They didn't tell me upfront that much that info is optional and I had to read the fine print to know that their privacy policy would allow them share my answers in ways that made me feel...uncomfortable. For example, with "other" service providers and law enforcement. WTH? It got more awkward from there. A staff member (she called herself a technician) wanted me to use the Optomat and pay an extra fee. I recently had this done, so I declined. She said it was required. "Hmm, I'm required to pay an additional fee for this test?" "Yes." No, thanks. I don't need an optometrist's office hustling me that hard for an extra 35 bucks. Look at the other reviews here on Yelp, these tactics/attitudes appear to be part the office culture on up to the doctors themselves. There was more weird stuff but, you get the idea. read more

Very Pleased! My work requires an ability to see very small details. Dr. Frank worked closely with me, patiently and methodically trying different contact lenses to find the best correction for my vision needs. He carefully explained the pros and cons of each type of lens and I did not have to settle for "good enough". The entire staff is very professional and friendly. Anna carefully explained how to use and care for my new contact lenses. Craig was very helpful in finding and fitting my new frames and explaining what was covered by my insurance plan. Ozi (sp) at the front desk was able to work with me to find the best appointments for my schedule.
